[Q] Video record limit 4gb - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I've seen the same question in other threads but never answered. I want to record a 2hour length video. However it automatically stops at 4gb. At first i thought that that it was due to the size limitation of the fat32 format. So i changed it to exfat but the same happens. Any suggestions?

Hasn't anyone managed to record bigger videos??

Try to use internal sd as storage for your video, I think it stops at 4gb because it assumes you are using fat32 when you select ext sd card as storage I maybe wrong but 4gb limit is always due to fat32.
You coukd always make more videos and join them with some editing tools on the pc.

SDCard Available Space is Incorrect

I am running into an issue with my SDCard.
The card is a 4GB class 4 Sandisk that for a little while had 157mb free. I deleted 1.09gb off of the card and it still says it only has 157mb free for whatever reason (on my computer and on the incredible). I have tried restarting the phone and taking the sdcard out and using a microsd card converter.
I understand that the only thing I can do might be to format, however this isn't the first time I have run into this problem and I want to stop running into this problem.
Anything I can try? I would prefer not to format, but I will if I have too.
Copy the contents of your SD to a computer, and format the SD card to FAT32. See what the does.

So I did that and well now I have 3gb available. My assumption is that everything I deleted kept bogging it down or whatever.
So then the question is, how do I stop it from doing this in the future?

I would wait and see if it happens again. I've never had that issue, and it's the first I've heard of it. I would recommend another SD card at that point.

[Q] Video playback from SD card freezes on S3

I purchased SanDisk Micro SDXC 64GB Class 10(UHS-1) card few months ago. I used it on my T-Mobile SGH-T999, and recently noticed video playback would freeze on my phone. I've done few tests to find out what the cause was, with different memory cards with different format, and was able to narrow it down to SanDisk card.
I ran the SD card test, and there was no bad sector and card was performing great on Windows, and when tested on my phone using tester application, it also worked great. But only when I'm playing a video on my phone(from the SDXC memory card), video playback freezes(not the phone, only the video) after couple minutes. And when I exit out of the video and try to do something else on the card(transfer files, access different files) it won't respond and says "this file cannot be accessed(or something similar)".
Only after reboot of the phone, or when I unmount and mount the card again, it starts working again. However, if I try to watch video from card again, it will freeze.
I tried using the card in 3 different formats (FAT32, NTFS, exFAT) and all of them returned same results. I tried formatting on the phone, and on Windows using different application, but all the results were same.
I tried using the stock video player, as well as MX player. And like-wise, the results were same.
I also tried using Samsung's Class 10 32GB card, and it worked fine.
What could be the problem? The SD card seems to work perfectly for transferring files either on phone, or on computer. Only the video playback on S3 is causing problem.
I use rooted stock Jelly Bean Rom by the way, and the video I tested were 1080p and 720p H.264 files. And the video plays perfectly fine on the phone memory.

Theres a couple roms with SD Card read/write speed tweaks(Darthstalker is the most recent). Maybe that will help you. With a little more research I'm sure you can find the script to use on a plain rooted stocked.
Thanks for the reply

[Q] shooting >4GB videos?

If an external SD card is formatted as exfat, will the Note 2 shoot videos larger than 4GB?
Update: I just tried it and it didn't work. Despite the exfat formatting, the video stopped and said file size limit reached when it got to 4GB.
Does anyone know if there's a workaround, perhaps via a custom ROM? (I don't see any available settings that are relevant.)
I was just reading about sdcards liking to get me one and only the sdxc can hold >4gb so that may be the issue

Has anyone with a 64GB card tried making a video larger than 4GB? If so, did it work?
I just got a 64GB card (Sandisk SDXC Class 10), exFAT-formatted, but video recording (to the external card) still stops at 4GB, saying that the maximum file size has been reached.
Anyone know of a way to fix this?
I still havent found a solution, has anyone found a workaround?
Im running stock 4.1.2 unrooted (warranty) ^^

[SOLVED][Q] MicroSD card not showing up...Disappears on some ROMs

As the title says my microSD card is not showing up on some ROM's. It is a 64gb sandisk card. I have tried searching for an answer in this forum and on google but have not been able to determine the problem with my phones storage. It works on my computer when hooked to the data cable in the phone. It also works when hooked up with a sd adapter through USB. However, I cannot get consistent use of it on my phone. Some roms it works and some roms I always get a notification that it is safe to remove my SD card. When I try to mount it in the storage settings it attempts to mount but immediately says it is safe to remove it... Also the card seems to always show up in recovery. I made sure the checkbox for mounting the external card was checked in recovery.
Seeing how it works consistently on the computer I want to rule out that the card is not functioning properly but who knows?? I was hoping to see if anyone else ran into a similar problem.
I have been trying to flash a couple ROMs to find one that has call recording with my GS3. I have narrowed them down to S3rx, z999, or Dandroid. They seem to be the only ones that have call recording, working bluetooth, wifi, and usb tether, wifi calling. One other thing I wanted was Init.d so I could switch my internal storage with my extenal to increase my internal to 64gb and make the external 16gb. I have not tried to do the switch yet so I know that is not causing my microSD to disappear from the system.
Also, if anyone knows of a good working way to switch the internal with the external storage?? I know there are at least two methods for doing it.
OR if there is a working way to make the GS3 allow apps to be stored on the external card??
Let the games begin! (God, I love this forum!) I am praying for an answer....:fingers-crossed:
I'm guessing that its formatted as exFAT, correct?
Only TW roms can use this format. It won't work in aosp/cm roms. Youd have to reformat as Fat32.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I have formatted it on my computer which I thought formatted it as FAT32. My computer just gives the option to format...it does not give me the option of formatting it as a certain type...
Am I wrong that it formats it as FAT32 ??
Oh and how about what I should do with either exchanging internal and external memory or is there a program that will allow apps to be mounted on the external? I saw one or two posts on google that claimed that one or two programs would allow a person to mount apps on the external but thought it may be difficult....I thought the switcharoo method looked easier on the long run...???
Thanks for your response Doc!
I wouldn't trust that it'd automatically format fat32. If you right click the card and select format it should open a small window with choices for quick format and a drop-down menu to choose the format you wish to use.
If you check the properties it should tell you what it currently is though.
Can't answer your other questions as I just don't know about it. Sorry.

Okay...I did figure out that my card was formatted to exFAT !!
You were absolutely correct in your assumption. Windows 7 automatically formated it to exFAT when I reformatted it a week or so ago.
SO to all peeps out there make sure you format your card to the proper format!! Download a program off of the internet to do the work for you...
I found this one that worked just peachy >> http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
ExFat can be used on TW based roms. So if you use touchwiz, its better to use exFat on 32gb or larger sdcards.
I like using the sdformatter tool from sdcard.org. just another option.

So I know you found a fix to your issue but if you do notice that your SD card begins to disappear again it might be the SD card itself.
I've read somewhere (great reliability sorry I don't have links) that on the GS3 there has been some issue with SanDisk specifically. I had two sandisk 32gb fail on me for no apparent reason and was wondering why they were doing this. I've already switched out to Kingston and I've not had any problems since. I'm not saying that this is the sure issue as my friend had a GS3 and used SanDisk and saw no issue but this is just my experience.
Best of luck to you and cheers.
I always just figured it was sandisk. That doesn't just happen on gs3's. Imo they just don't have near the quality of other manufacturers like samsung or Kingston.

Camera - use SD card or system memory?

What's the pro's and con's with using SD card to store camera photos?
How I see it:
Pro:
- More space.
Cons:
- Less performance, so multi-shots and HDR and high bitrate video may stutter?
- Slower to copy to PC?
What's everyone using.
I prefer to keep it on my 32GB ext SD card.
Internal for me. I make sure to delete duplicate photos and missed shots, I don't like having 10 photos of the same thing. Plus, I only keep photos for the current year, on January 1st I move all my photos to my computer and NAS.
External for me. Class 10 Sandisk, I've never noticed any drops in performance.
I just have a random Class 4 (I think?) 32GB I had lying around, so wondering if I'd see a performance hit with this.
For reference, GoPro only recommends Class 10 if shooting 12MP photos at 0.5 second timelapse, so perhaps I should be fine on the G3.
From what I can see, with Pictures it doesn't really make a difference. I've got the 32GB/3GB version and shooting photos to my 32GB SanDisk Class 10 MicroSD is pretty much the same as writing them to the internal memory. However shooting videos at the maximum resolution does require quite a high write speed SD card (The only one above the Class 10 Extreme is the Ultra, which writes/reads at 90Mb/sec. The Extreme I have writes/reads at 30Mb/sec). So I guess it wouldn't really matter with pictures, but with video I'd personally stick to writing them to the internal storage, otherwise you may have stuttering. But if you've only got a 16GB version, then I guess it would be appropriate to stick everything on a MicroSD as you're not going to get much 4k footage on the 10 or so GB the 16GB comes with available to you.
For the life of me I can't find where to change the camera storage location. I don't see it in the camera settings menu anywhere.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for feedback.
I haven't found how to change location either. I just unmounted SD, launched camera app, and said to save to internal. Then I remounted SD.

To change storage at least for me is under settings in the camera app. After you click settings, it comes up right under the settings icon

How do I stop it from asking me which storage location every time I start the Camera app?
The only difference I see is that burst shots and videos take longer to process which isn't a big deal once I already took the shot/video. much easier for me to keep them on the sd card for when I plug it into the computer or switch devices. I know on the M8 you couldn't have saving to sd card selected for burst shots.. it was annoying at times.
To change the storage location I had to go to Settings - Apps - Camera and clear data. Restarted camera and it asked where I wanted to store photos. I don't remember it asking me that the first time... Oh well its working now.
as mentioned on post 9, there is a toggle icon for selecting between internal and SD below the settings icon.

when I open the camera with the SD card removed that option disappears, and reappears we the card is back in the phone.
is the SD card being detected and read OK in other apps? if you did not format the card in the phone worth backing up the contents and formatting it in the phone.
if a format (or change of SD card) does not restore the IN/SD option for those missing it, what variant of the phone is being used? e. g. mine is a 32GB D855 (adeutn)

I prefer to keep my pictures on the SD Card in the case if I get a bootloop and have to reinstall my stock firmware and wipeout my internal memory for a fresh install.
Besides, a 32GB microsd can be had for less than $20. Cheap insurance!
