If an external SD card is formatted as exfat, will the Note 2 shoot videos larger than 4GB?
Update: I just tried it and it didn't work. Despite the exfat formatting, the video stopped and said file size limit reached when it got to 4GB.
Does anyone know if there's a workaround, perhaps via a custom ROM? (I don't see any available settings that are relevant.)
I was just reading about sdcards liking to get me one and only the sdxc can hold >4gb so that may be the issue

Has anyone with a 64GB card tried making a video larger than 4GB? If so, did it work?
I just got a 64GB card (Sandisk SDXC Class 10), exFAT-formatted, but video recording (to the external card) still stops at 4GB, saying that the maximum file size has been reached.
Anyone know of a way to fix this?
I still havent found a solution, has anyone found a workaround?
Im running stock 4.1.2 unrooted (warranty) ^^

I got a Patriot class 4 microSD card from Newegg for the t989. I've been annoyed by the fact that if I use the stock Camera app and choose to save to SD card directly, random pictures either do not get saved, or existing pictures gets corrupted (i.e., gallery items show a broken picture icon and the files become unreadable even using an external card reader).
SD Tool shows the read/write speed is as claimed (Class 4). Also using h2testw and an external card reader does not show anything abnormal.
What could I be doing wrong? Should I have gotten a class 10 if I want to save pictures onto the SD card?

Take all the crap off your sd card and format from the phone, and try again
Also this belongs 9n Q&A section
Thanks... I did that but still happens. I was wondering whether the speed is not good enough because it usually happens when I try to take several pictures within a few minutes...

I purchased SanDisk Micro SDXC 64GB Class 10(UHS-1) card few months ago. I used it on my T-Mobile SGH-T999, and recently noticed video playback would freeze on my phone. I've done few tests to find out what the cause was, with different memory cards with different format, and was able to narrow it down to SanDisk card.
I ran the SD card test, and there was no bad sector and card was performing great on Windows, and when tested on my phone using tester application, it also worked great. But only when I'm playing a video on my phone(from the SDXC memory card), video playback freezes(not the phone, only the video) after couple minutes. And when I exit out of the video and try to do something else on the card(transfer files, access different files) it won't respond and says "this file cannot be accessed(or something similar)".
Only after reboot of the phone, or when I unmount and mount the card again, it starts working again. However, if I try to watch video from card again, it will freeze.
I tried using the card in 3 different formats (FAT32, NTFS, exFAT) and all of them returned same results. I tried formatting on the phone, and on Windows using different application, but all the results were same.
I tried using the stock video player, as well as MX player. And like-wise, the results were same.
I also tried using Samsung's Class 10 32GB card, and it worked fine.
What could be the problem? The SD card seems to work perfectly for transferring files either on phone, or on computer. Only the video playback on S3 is causing problem.
I use rooted stock Jelly Bean Rom by the way, and the video I tested were 1080p and 720p H.264 files. And the video plays perfectly fine on the phone memory.

Theres a couple roms with SD Card read/write speed tweaks(Darthstalker is the most recent). Maybe that will help you. With a little more research I'm sure you can find the script to use on a plain rooted stocked.
Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply. I shall try them after backing up all my stuff.
As the title says my microSD card is not showing up on some ROM's. It is a 64gb sandisk card. I have tried searching for an answer in this forum and on google but have not been able to determine the problem with my phones storage. It works on my computer when hooked to the data cable in the phone. It also works when hooked up with a sd adapter through USB. However, I cannot get consistent use of it on my phone. Some roms it works and some roms I always get a notification that it is safe to remove my SD card. When I try to mount it in the storage settings it attempts to mount but immediately says it is safe to remove it... Also the card seems to always show up in recovery. I made sure the checkbox for mounting the external card was checked in recovery.
Seeing how it works consistently on the computer I want to rule out that the card is not functioning properly but who knows?? I was hoping to see if anyone else ran into a similar problem.
I have been trying to flash a couple ROMs to find one that has call recording with my GS3. I have narrowed them down to S3rx, z999, or Dandroid. They seem to be the only ones that have call recording, working bluetooth, wifi, and usb tether, wifi calling. One other thing I wanted was Init.d so I could switch my internal storage with my extenal to increase my internal to 64gb and make the external 16gb. I have not tried to do the switch yet so I know that is not causing my microSD to disappear from the system.
Also, if anyone knows of a good working way to switch the internal with the external storage?? I know there are at least two methods for doing it.
OR if there is a working way to make the GS3 allow apps to be stored on the external card??
Let the games begin! (God, I love this forum!) I am praying for an answer....:fingers-crossed:
I'm guessing that its formatted as exFAT, correct?
Only TW roms can use this format. It won't work in aosp/cm roms. Youd have to reformat as Fat32.

I have formatted it on my computer which I thought formatted it as FAT32. My computer just gives the option to format...it does not give me the option of formatting it as a certain type...
Am I wrong that it formats it as FAT32 ??
Oh and how about what I should do with either exchanging internal and external memory or is there a program that will allow apps to be mounted on the external? I saw one or two posts on google that claimed that one or two programs would allow a person to mount apps on the external but thought it may be difficult....I thought the switcharoo method looked easier on the long run...???
Thanks for your response Doc!
I wouldn't trust that it'd automatically format fat32. If you right click the card and select format it should open a small window with choices for quick format and a drop-down menu to choose the format you wish to use.
If you check the properties it should tell you what it currently is though.
Can't answer your other questions as I just don't know about it. Sorry.

Okay...I did figure out that my card was formatted to exFAT !!
You were absolutely correct in your assumption. Windows 7 automatically formated it to exFAT when I reformatted it a week or so ago.
SO to all peeps out there make sure you format your card to the proper format!! Download a program off of the internet to do the work for you...
I found this one that worked just peachy >> http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
ExFat can be used on TW based roms. So if you use touchwiz, its better to use exFat on 32gb or larger sdcards.
I like using the sdformatter tool from sdcard.org. just another option.

So I know you found a fix to your issue but if you do notice that your SD card begins to disappear again it might be the SD card itself.
I've read somewhere (great reliability sorry I don't have links) that on the GS3 there has been some issue with SanDisk specifically. I had two sandisk 32gb fail on me for no apparent reason and was wondering why they were doing this. I've already switched out to Kingston and I've not had any problems since. I'm not saying that this is the sure issue as my friend had a GS3 and used SanDisk and saw no issue but this is just my experience.
Best of luck to you and cheers.
I always just figured it was sandisk. That doesn't just happen on gs3's. Imo they just don't have near the quality of other manufacturers like samsung or Kingston.

Hello. I've seen the same question in other threads but never answered. I want to record a 2hour length video. However it automatically stops at 4gb. At first i thought that that it was due to the size limitation of the fat32 format. So i changed it to exfat but the same happens. Any suggestions?
Hasn't anyone managed to record bigger videos??

Try to use internal sd as storage for your video, I think it stops at 4gb because it assumes you are using fat32 when you select ext sd card as storage I maybe wrong but 4gb limit is always due to fat32.
You coukd always make more videos and join them with some editing tools on the pc.

Have a little problem every now and then unmounts then remount sd card as read only, only since updating to 4.4.2 any one else have this problem, anyone know a fix? Already tried reflashing via lg support tool. Only way i can is to physically eject and reinsert..
I also have the same problem with sd card

I've heard a lot of bad reports of issues with external sd card and 4.4.2
I'm in Australia and just received my G Pad this morning (came from DWI - wanted it in black and unfortunately only the White one is sold in Australia) Turned it on and it shows the OTA for 4.4.2 is available. I was very tempted to just fire up the update but I've held off for the moment just so that I can do some research as to any other problems people are experiencing with 4.4.2 Out of the box my G Pad runs nice and I'd hate to update it just to be plagued with issues.
EDIT* Sorry, misread question.
I have problems with my sd card, too. If i download songs via Napster, the G Pad throws out my sd card.

SD Card locked
Guys! Read This:
http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes
Using the restore upgrade errors through the LG PC suite mostly fixed the problem I was having with my SD card after upgrading to Kitkat. It was frequently disconnecting itself and requiring a reboot or physically removing / replacing it to make it usable again.
I say mostly, because it still occasionally pops up the SD card disconnected window when I wake it up, but it immediately disappears again and says 'sd card inserted' in the notification bar and is fully usable.
Note, Kitkat making the SD card read only to certain apps is a feature not a bug...
I took the plunge and updated to 4.4.2 - I am not experiencing any disconnecting issues with the sd card. As far as the other issue of write restrictions imposed by KK. Well.. I decided to root and apply the fix. So now, so far, no problems..
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Cheers for the replies good to know im not the only one, I understand kitkat may do it with certain apps but the camera? Seems bit crappy, my problem I guess is when it remounts it isnt usable until eject maybe I will just reupdate and try again.
when you guys updated did you leave the sd card in or you took it out because i left my card in and it worked fine after the update. 128gb sandisk
I also have issues with the sdcard unmounting from time to time after the upgrade to 4.4.2 . I noticed that it disconnects very frequently when I use Google music and my chromecast. It is getting really annoying.
Anyone knows how to do a bug report to LG on the issue?

What brand and size sdcards are you using?
The sandisk 64 bit has issues. This is only the sandisk 64 cards, other cards like the Samsung 64 work fine, as well as other sizes of sandisk.
I have the same ptoblem with Sandisk 32 GB.

Sony 4gb nothing special but is annoying have to keep removing to be able to copy downloads to it..
I had issues with the built in video app and vlc reading my sd card, unmointing and reinserting the sd card fixed the problem
No problems for me with the SD card after the 4.4.2 update but I only use mine to store all my music and photos. I have a 32 Gig Sandisk. I have not had any problems reading from the card or deleting files from the card, I have not tried writing anything to it yet. I am fully stock no root.
I have SanDisk 64GB formatted as exfat. I experienced no mounting issue, though I need to apply a fix for resolving the writing issue of some 3rd party apps.
