Screen repair? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I feel sick. First my brickloop, now my girl dropped her N3, face down, screen cracked. It's fine, works still, but the lower part is cracked. Anyone have any idea how difficult this would be to replace? It looks like just the glass cracked. You can't even see it when the screen is on, but I'm worried about it getting worse. Thankfully, I bought her a case from AT&T the other day, probably helped some. I feel worse than her... She just upgraded from an HTC Sensation, so even with the cracked screen, huge upgrade.

Ooh, that sucks
Speaking as a phone repair tech, samsungs ARE the easiest to repair & swapping the screen would be pretty easy, but you have to get the whole assembly. Samsung's screens are fused to the digitizer & its pretty much impossible to separate the two and keep the LCD intact. If you have insurance, it'll honestly be cheaper to just pay the deductible and get the whole thing replaced than it would be to buy a new screen.

Definitely cheaper to just pay insurance and get overnight replacement.

SOON TO BE TWEAKED NOTE 3

This is my biggest fear. I've bought cases for every phone I've had and ended up taking them off pretty quickly. I've been very conscious when I have mine in my hand over a hard surface for this very reason. I dropped my S3 a few times but thankfully I never cracked the screen. A few more days and my iloome glass screen protector will be here and I'll have a bit more peace of mind about my screen not being scratched.

I bought her a flip case from AT&T, but she dropped it, case opened, and it landed right on its face, of course. She is fine, cracking isn't that noticeable, but I feel like crying. :'(

Is there anyplace that has replacement screens?

Damn phone slipped out my hand that the glass over the screen shattered.
Yeah I want to know that tonly few companies make amoled displays so they only might be availanle only in bulk but im not sure.
Because amoled is fused to the glass, it is even more difficult to replace. Keeps away the dust that LCD is plagued by though.

There is a couple on Ebay....

To use screen protector or not???

So I'm debating on whether or not I should use a screen protector on my S3. With the new gorilla glass is it necessary?
What are all of you doing??

I think it's personal preference I bought a screen protector and I am using mine. It depends how well you take care of your phone. Get a cheap one off of amazon or eBay and see if you like it
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
i take care of my phones so i will not be using a protector. I never have. I took my X2 to the extremes once i activated my s3 and it was difficult to actually scratch the screen.
hoping this holds up equally well. I did by a sleeve for the phone though.
At first I didn't plan on using one, but I did end up trying a wet apply protector and I'm liking it ok. The Gorilla glass seems pretty resilient, and there are videos on youtube of people taking keys, razors, knives etc to the screen with no scratches but the last thing you want is a scratched up display.
Come on guys, there has been threads about this

I have a My Touch 4G Slide. I hate the long name.
I have been using it for over a year now and it has a few very slight scratches. It has Gorilla Glass.
Now about the videos on YouTube: They all use metal that is not so sharp. I would like to see how the glass stands up to a single grain of sand, dirt or rock fragment.
I'm a mechanic and work in a rough environment. I get dirt and grease on it all the time but I don't purposely scratch it.
My 4G was a replacement for the G2 I had for almost a year before and did use a Zagg and it got dirty within a month and the free replacements for life cost $6 to ship them.
I'll have my S3 this week and don't plan to use a protector. I don't think that a screen protector can save it from a direct hit. Since the majority of the surface is non screen, I am considering a case to spread out the impact damage if I drop it, which is more likely to break the screen.
My opinion is non scientific and is from limited experience.
The Verizon guy installed one for me and its working fine. I wasn't gonna put one on but I do like it.

I think there are many debait about this, it's up to you, and as said many times gorilla glass is not future proof it will get scratched easily, forget about keys and coins, just get some sand and try it out.
There has been some discussion on this. There are also some threads about individual screen protectors. Look here.

Like 200$ for the lcd + glass. Or like 15$ for just the glass, its hard to replace but manageable.

Depends on where you live. Some towns have little phone repair centers.

I work at a cell phone repair store. We charge like 275 for the repair and a good quality part will run like 225. I have fixed like 30 gs3s so far and I am going to warn you now..... Do not attempt to just replace the glass. I you will just be wasting your time. To the guy that said it is manageable, until you try it yourself, please don't give advice like that out. It very much is not manageable to do. But if you have any experience repairing phones, just order the screen plus lcd yourself and do it. It is very easy on the gs3

Depending where your at I would google search repair centers and call around for the best price. If that doesn't work perhaps Craigslist? I met a really cool tech guy off there and he works on mainly iphones but knows a lot about android devices as well.

If you feel confident enough you can replace the screen yourself. Here is a very good guide on youtube:

Quite a few ppl have replaced just the glass here on xda..
If my glass was broken I'd try to fix it.. If I screw up I'd have to replace the entire thing anyway so might as well try to fix it for 15 first.
Or am I missing something?

It isn't about the quality, the screen is curved in the edges so it becomes extremely weak there, one unlucky corner drop that avoids the plastic bezel and hits the screen and welcome cracks.
Now i dropped mine many times and found that the phone drops on it's back most of the time and survives, but i almost broke it when it dropped on the side, luckily it hit the bezel and there was no damage, not even a scratch/bend.
So yep.. luck.

+ 1 on that.
if you have a proper case it'll decrease the chance...but yea with an unprotected phone it comes down to luck really. takes that one spot to crack your screen.

Get a case and screen protector and be careful with your $700+ phone!

I broke my screen also only 2 days after buying it. I took it to a cell phone repair shop and they used an n7100 screen amd also digitizer. (Because they broke my digitizer replacing the glass) 2 days after that my phone just quit working. They refused to fix it because I signed a waiver. So I took it to another shop who said it was the wrong screen that caused the problems and it totally fried my phone. Not sure if they were right or not but I ended up dishing out the $700 for a second time for another new phone. Not sure if you want to chance it.

Guess I got lucky. Bought an Elago case and iSmooth screen protector. Phone fell out of my pocket next day and happily bounced down an entire concrete staircase. The pen fell out and went even further. Case has few dings from concrete. Phone is in perfect condition, so is the pen.

dont replace just the screen..it can be done but you risk the chance of dust getting between the lcd and glass which will drive you crazy.
get the lcd/digitizer replacement..usually around $150-260 and swap it yourself..i did mine and it was pretty easy

I got my gn2 at best buy and pay 11$ a month for insurance... I'm happy to pay that cause i usually drop my phone every month or so and just take it there and get a loaner phone for bout 3days and then I get a refurbished gn2.. In the last 2years I've dropped, water damage and bricked over 10-12 phones and just gotta wait a few days for a refurbished one
Radio Shack does it for about $80 but you are without the phone for a few days.
