I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?

It could be that and the stock charge pushed a lot of power in to charge quicker... But my input is that my phone hasnt even gotten very hot at all..

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!
I have noticed this too.
With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

I don't know dude but what I do know is that I have the Incredible 2 overclocked to over 2Ghz!!! and my Xoom at 1.7Ghz and neither one of them has every gotten this hot before!!

Ill second this srongly, I think than anything over 107 with this technology is NOT friendly at all.

Mine got hot on day 1 from youtube and general setup but after a full nights charge it has been great for 2 full days, no heating up or anything weird.
But man did it get hot!
Edit: I turned off gps the night this happened. I have been using my phone alot and have not experienced this again.
You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

Often while playing a game, my screen will randomly dim and i will check the brightness option where it warns me of overheating.
The battery temp is only 42C, and the phone isnt very warm, ive felt phones get way hotter.
Whats wrong? is it the phone? or normal? Anything I can do?
Is ur phone overclocked? Playing game does makes the phone really hot even without OC ur cpu.

I'm not speaking for everyone certainly but I have seen 42c while talking on the phone.
It does get a bit warm, but I never get the warning you are speaking of. I am completely stock.
I now haven't gotten to this temperature (close but not as high as 42c) in awhile.
My brightness always dims and gets limited to prevent overheating. My phone has gotten up to 125F while it was charging and I was using it (nothing very intensive though, like playing games or anything like that. Mostly texting, email, XDA) I have even had an overheating warning on the charging animation while ordnance few times too. I'm actually going to bring it in for them to look at. I'm stock kernel and rom(just rooted)
Just in a few minutes my screen has been on it just shot from 89.9F to 98F. And all I did was write this post.

125F is way too high, there's got to be something wrong with the phone. Mine sits at idle around 70F, with heavy use, it never reaches 100F. And I'm overclocked to 1.4GHZ.

Agreed. High 70s to mid 80s no matter what I do in a hot and humid hawaii climate. Reached 107 at 1.6ghz while plugged in doing 15 back to back benches to test for stability. Somethinf wrong with your phine sir

my phone also dims
used to get temps around 115F on my evo 3D,never saw any ill effects though
this samsung does get to 102F or so occasionally,and no ill effects so far either

Well I undervolted, which doesnt make it run hotter, it'll make it cooler if anything.
I've never understood the logic behind that. A processer uses a certain amount of power, measured in Watts. Watts equals current times voltage. If you lower voltage, current has to increase, and more current equals more heat. Am I missing something?
My GNex has been overheating all the time while watching flash videos for an exclusive time (30 mins) and browser +apps have been crashing quite a lot due to overheat.
I'm running on 4.1.1 with Franco's kernel clocked at 1.3ghz.
I'm thinking of putting thermal paste between the cover and the phone. What are your thoughts?

Considering the workload placed on the CPU and GPU in Jellybean, the overclocking will be causing you issues. I think the word FACEPALM comes to mind when saying you've got a overheating problem with a overclocked processor.
Where you gonna put that thermal paste?

I really hope this part is a joke. First, the back of the phone (under the cover) isn't a source of heat generation, but rather heating up due to radiant heat. Second, if it got warm enough, the TIM could leak down into your battery or SIM cavity. Either could potentially be fatal to the phone, depending upon the TIM components (some are partially conductive). Third, the plastic back isn't a great heat conductor. Even if you could somehow channel heat to the back cover (which happens to be the only purpose of TIM... to transfer heat from one area to another), plastic wouldn't properly dissipate the heat. Fourth, if you used the wrong TIM, you'd essentially glue the back cover onto the device.
*TIM = Thermal Interface Material, which refers to any form of "thermal paste", "thermal goo", "CPU paste", or whatever you want to call it.
Flash videos for 30 minutes, huh?

again, someone is complaining of overheating, yet not posting cpu or battery temps. overheating can be a relative term meaning something to one person and another thing to a different person. if you are sitting in ac, and you pick your phone up, it might feel quite warm to you. if you are outside in the summer heat, the phone at the same temp might feel cool to you. anyways, the phone getting hot whike watching flash videos for 30 minutes is quite normal. if your phone does "overheat", and you have thermal throttling turned off, itll just shut itself off at 110C as a safety feature.

But gets hot when playing games. Around 120 -125°

Every smartphone I have had gets warm when playing games for over 30min.
I believe this is normal as long as you monitor and don't over clock a lot. Eventually that can kill your hardware.

Yea mine gets hot even if I am just browsing and texting and watching videos .. I guess its normal but its annoying because then my hands get all sweaty .. lol ... but I think the maximum the temp can go to is 60 c which is above 125 f so ur ok

today for me was the hottest my phone has ever gotten - 105F. it was 95F outside and i had to turn my screen brightness up so i could see, on top of surfing the web and chatting on the phone. someone commented in another thread that our phone can go up to 140F without issue. i dont know if thats true, but there ya have it...oh, i havent played any games yet
Been monitoring temps with system tuner under different stress levels. Playing gta3 I pushed temps to 52°C.
Internet browsing has me around the low 40s. At idle the temp is around 32-35C
My ambient temp in my home is about 73-74 F.
None the less this phone is one hot tamale! Lol

I've only played one game for any extended period of time so far which is Home Run Battle 2 and my GS3 doesn't get hot at all. It runs just slightly warmer than it usually does but it's by far the coolest phone I've eve had.

Under voting helps with this a TON. I took my voltage for 1.5ghz from 1150mv down to 1025mv and it stays much much cooler under full load. Oh and temps won't break your cpu, too much nanny software on this chip. Even over clocked. Over voltage may though =)

So far I tried playing Final Fantasy 3 on it, definitely very warm, but not hot to touch. Others include Youtube and prolong Web Browsing. Music is fine however. :victory:

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.

Hi everyone, I have a bit of a heat problem with my Note II.
I noticed that, whenever I play a resource-intensive game (like Need for Speed: Most Wanted) while my phone is plugged, the phone gets quite hot. Eventually, this will lead to the phone becoming more choppy, even after I've exited the game (like when I'm just browsing my homescreens) until a time when the heat dies and the phone reverts to its normal, snappy self. It sort of reminds me of GPU throttling on PCs whenever I play a very resource-hungry game and the GPU temps go to, like 90 C. I usually just get rid of the GPU overclock and tone down the game's visual settings. Anyway...
I never experience this when my phone is unplugged. Games play smoothly and the phone just becomes warm, not hot.
I find this very annoying and scary at the same time. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any way to get around it? Maybe I should just leave my phone alone while charging, as I usually do...
