As much as I know, there are still setbacks with kernal installations...
The phone I bought from the store is a Samsung Galaxy s4 (SGH-M919. But low and behold, I unknowingly flashed a ROM for this phone which replaced my SGH-M919 kernal with a i9505 Kernal. Does this have any significance at all? Should I only flash zips that are built for i9505 kernal, or stick with flashing SGH-M919 kernal zips?
(I am INDEED a "flashaholic", and I don't know what to do, now that my kernal has changed (IE: I don't want to brick my phone)
Help? Advice?

If you are using T-Mobile then you have to flash a compatible kernel which you would normally do right after flashing the ROM.

Not exactly.. i9505 kernels will boot and work just fine.
Only real setback is maybe some csc files mismatch and your build.prop will show you have a i9505.
As long as you don't flash any i9500 ROMs, you're okay.

BTW, I installed a cracked cwm Touch.zip, and it works great on i9505 kernal, except the main purpose of cwm is taken away (Installing zips)
Every time I attempt to flash zips on cwm touch, the terminal process always ends in "installation aborted". Should I revert back to the casual clockworkmod, or is there something I can do to fix the installation aborted error on cwm touch?

A cracked, what?
Also, what error do you get after the installation aborted? build.prop mismatch?

Cracked, (pirated, I guess) version of it. I thought cwm touch was only available to donators o.o Guess I was wrong. Any who..
That's all I get as the error. "Installation aborted." And know that this is when using cwm. Not in terminal, if that's what you were thinking. cwm doesn't really inform you too much about the errors when aborting an installation, unless you take a look at the logs. (Where the logs are, I'm unsure of)

Glad you like TWRP but there are CWM version that work just fine including the Philz CWM touch. You just need to be careful where you get your files from.

I rooted my Bell Galaxy SIII this afternoon using Mr. Robinsons method.
All good. Have root. Installed CWM (LTE Variant and other newer listed on Mr. Robinsons thread. One at a time, same error)
Booted into recovery and tried to install CM10 after factory reset, dalvick wipe, yada, yada yada.
I get the error:
Assert Failed: getprop("ro.product.device*) =="E:Error in /SDCARD/cm-10-20120912-nightly-d2Att.zip (Status 7)
Might be some left out as not all of the error code is shown.
Tried multiple times to download CM using different browsers and directly on the phone.
I am able to restore factory rooted image no problem.
I then installed TWRP v2.2.2.0
Same error when trying to install CM10-current nightly
I'm assuming that this is related to device ID and I'm trying to install ROM's not suitable for it?
I've tried with AOKP version from Task and get same error.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Pretty sure these are good for Bell version....
Any idea's or confirmation that these won't work with my phone.
Thanks

Thanks,
Just so I learn something out of this...Why do I need this? I understand that both versions of CWM and TWRP I installed are used by people with the same hardware?
Just want to understand what I am missing.
Thanks,

EDIT: Okay, after doing some looking at the Build.prop file I see I have a D2Cann and the rom is listed as for D2ATT so the assumption I'm making is the older recoveries match that and won't proceed while CWM 6.012 doesn't? I'm downloading and going to install the latest CWM now to try and confirm this. Still not sure why this has worked for some people and not for me unless they are changing their build.prop but I haven't been able to find that to confirm it.
If you go in the cm10 thread in original developpenent, they specify which recovery to install with a link to download it.

its not the recovery that does the actual check for the device. it's the assert in the updater-script of the rom that you're trying to flash. CM10 checks for "d2att" and if thats not what in your build.prop it will error out and refuse to flash. Either remove that line from the updater-script or edit your build.prop.
Also. you need to try your best to read the OPs of the roms you're thinking about flashing. In the CM10 thread they even give you the information of which recovery you need to use and where to get it.

yeah, in this case, I thought I read everything and maybe got too much info. Still for coming from other devices (HTC DesireZ, Legend, couple of Asus transformers), having different device versions is a new step to tick off and learn.
Had the same issue with your rom too. Can I ask that you add a note to the OP about making sure Canadian versions change the build prop or only use CWM 6 cause I had the same issue with yours when trying to install. I'm not going to be the only guy that missed this.
Gonna install CWM 6 and change build prop to install your ROM. It looks good.
Thanks again.

How did you update to 6.0.1.4 when 6.0.1.2 is the latest version? And no, you don't need to re root. You don't need root to flash firmware.

Looking on the forums someone posted a link to download an updated 6.0.1.4 so I tried that since 6.0.1.2 wasnt working. There's gotta be something simple to fix that I dont know about, ive flashed and rooted my htc sensation and mytouch4g easy and never had installation failure when flashing. Can someone walk me through what exactly I need to be fully rooted and flash a rom!?
How could cwm not be working if its updated to latest version? I dont think im downloading the wrong rom and its not a bad link. Even tried dragging it onto my internal sd wirh debugging off. Btw I have the 32 gb s3 with does not have an external sd.
The way I fix that was I rerootes my phone into latest clockwork recovery. I didn't remove the root I just rerootee it. Look for cwr 6 I think.

From watching the video given for the toolkit, when in odin and have to open up pda then go to the toolkit files and then root all my files are in winRAR type and his are in tar archive type. Does that matter at all? And also when clicking on the pda then root you chose the file /boot-insecure-tmo-t99uvalem-cwm but when in odin and clicking this file on the little winrar icon to the left of the file name its the only one with a little like key lock, doesnt know if thats an issue or anything just something i noticed because when accessing the toolkit files on my c drive and going to the root folder, the key icon is no longer there.. Any ideas??
Reading about people flashing a kernal in recovery then flashing the rom and working but when you flash a rom isnt it flashing the kernal it comes with also? Or is this the problem
Well, I re ran the toolkit, re did the root and odin process same as i did the first time, downloaded rom straight from my phone flashed again still getting status 7 error/ installation aborted -______- ugh...

Look at my signature for the proper CWM. I don't know where you saw 6.0.1.4 for our device, but the main thread and the developers website show no sign of it. And download CM10 from get.cm, d2tmo. If you that doesn't work, you don't have a SGH-T999.
I can't believe I didn't see this before....what is the exact file name of the rom you are flashing?
I looked and did not see our phone listed in the op. Looks like the international one is there (codename m0?). But no d2tmo, d2att, etc.
Unless I just missed it there, you do not want to even try flashing that anymore! If I'm right you just got very lucky dude!

Glad you got it sorted out.
Just for the future though, never flash anything not built for the TMobile SGH-T999 (codename d2tmo). If you do flash an international GS3 rom it will brick your device. I think this woulda happened had the miui rom from the link in op actually flashed.

Hi everyone,
I just got the Samsung Galaxy S3 and I was able to root and flash a custom ROM. I'm currently on Axis ROM: (4.1.2 customized Touchwiz) Link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089801
The kernel I had right now is stock and I'm not every satisfied with the battery life. Therefore, I try to flash a different one but keep getting error in recovery. I tried TWRP recovery, it shows the red error Fail. I also tried Clockmod touch, get the same error saying unable to extract/flash the zip.
Yes, I did wipe cache several times before flashing. Additionally, I had download different kernel zip (more than 10 of them) in case it's a bad download. Nothing works. I do have a decent experience flashing ROM and stuff with Android devices and this is the strangest thing I ever ran into.
I'm on T-mobile Galaxy s3 by the way. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!
Make sure you're flashing a compatible kernel. There are touchwiz and aosp kernels, the title for the rom should say what kind of base it has.
Edit: looks like it's a touchwiz rom so make sure you flash a kernel that's compatible with touchwiz. What kernel are you trying to flash?
Oh and also make sure the download is correct.
Sent from my SGH-T999
What versions of twrp and cwm did you use?
When you booted into recovery did it look the same each time? I ask because you got some red error fail on both???
Open a root capable browser and go to /system
Look for install-recovery.sh
If its there, delete it and reinstall twrp/cwm.

I didn't find such file in /system. The recovery looks different. I do know how they look like since I used both of them before. TWRP shows error in Red (Fail). cwm doesn't, but show error that unable to extract zip.

OK, so I have been rooted almost a year, and have flashed several roms. I am currently on 4.1 of I believe Hybrid's rom. I believe I have had a 4.3 at one time but my last flash, whenever I started trying to flash a 4.4 version I started running into problems along the way. Is there anything special I need to do to upgrade to 4.4? Like besides flashing the rom, is there anything else I need to flash? Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!

No one still has answered lol. I tried to flash a few different 4.3's and they kept failing. I'm using TWRP or whatever it's called 2.6.0.0 not sure what that's about. I had to flash an older rom I had on my computer to get it to allow my phone to work.
I prefer using CWM or Philz Touch which is based on CWM rather than TWRP. I tried TWRP with a few ROMs but they always failed to install. Once I switched to CWM, they installed without issue. You can flash the tar version of Philz using Odin.
http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att
To run 4.4.2 ROMs, you should update to the latest 4.1.2 bootloader, load a custom recovery, boot into recovery, wipe cache, Dalvik, data, system, and flash the new ROM.

I already updated my bootloader to the one that said "you cannot downgrade from this one or you will brick your device" I think that's the latest one I'm not sure lol.
By "Boot into recovery" are you meaning boot to the recovery screen? Sorry, I like to make sure of what I am doing so I don't brick anything lol. Although in a month I'm buying the Note 3 .
How do I go about switching back to CWM? Sorry to ask and sound dumb -- which I am not I have an associates of science in computer programming but just reciently switched to Mechatronic Engineering due to higher job growth in my area. I digress.
I could probably find dozens of articles on here how to go about it, but its generally quicker if someone just posts the link to the correct one to use for my device, every time I go searching these forms, I end up on every-which phone other than mine -- I do apologize.

Go to the general section and read the stickies here is a quote from the recovery thread I have heavily clipped it you need to read the whole thing in its original form. From what I read it is safe for your phone to use the D2ATT recovery image, I however take no responsibility for any thing that happens successful or not if you you flash it you wear it...

So you've got your device rooted, and you want to install a custom recovery? Great! Don't just follow any guide you stumble across though, as some of the early recovery packages for the "AT&T" model were actually just copies of the custom Sprint recovery, and then you'll have all sorts of fun trying to install ROMs. ("Status 7" errors anyone? )
While this may seem difficult, it's really not. Grab a recovery image (these files end in ".img") such as ClockWork Mod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) for your device. Most ROM developers say to use CWM, but they both work equally well.
In our case, we need an image for the Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. Telus, Rogers, Bell, and SaskTel phones are (almost*) the exact same phone as AT&T, if you have one of these devices, you will be installing the AT&T recovery.
*NOTE: While we're on the topic, let's take a second to talk about what makes the Canadian I747M different from the AT&T I747.
The short version is... The modem. AT&T is using completely different and incompatible modem firmware in their phones when compared with the Canadian models. Rogers, Bell, Telus, and any other Canadian I747M are the same device (Samsung worked some strange voodoo and got all the Canadian carriers to agree on the same hardware!) which means that if Rogers releases a new modem firmware update, a SaskTel user could install it without issue. AT&T modem updates will not work on Canadian models, nor will Canadian updates work on AT&T phones! I've tried it. Trust me. You don't want to deal with the hassle of fixing it.

So in on word I can't really do anything with my rooted phone ?? When you flash a rom does it change anything to the modem file ?
I seriously can not figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm going to be giving away my Epic since my friend broke his phone and I have the S4. However before that I want to install TWRP and the latest KK rom but everytime I do I brick the phone and have to restore it back to EL30 or FC09 and start over. I done this 4 times and I still can't get it to work properly. It roots fine but when I try to install a later rom or TWRP it doesn't work. Can someone help me out?
BUMP
Is there no one that can help me with this problem? I really want to get this cellphone working so I can give it off to my friend.
wich rom and wich twrp?
The epic 4g custom roms all have a recovery that goes along with the rom. The blu kuban rom has always been stable for me and if I recall correctly it has twrp along with it instead of cwm.
On second thought, are you talking about the sprint s2 non slider or the slider one?

Wait but if you already have a recovery installed wont it skip installing a new recovery? Because to root it I had to install CWM 5.0.2.7
It's the Sprint Epic 4G with the slide in keyboard. SPH-D700 if I recall.
@ernest-sora I have tried to install a few latest rom like The Schism Rom and Avatar Rom since those are KikKat based
Ahhhhh, I don't know anything about the slider one. I only have the non slider one. Sorry

Rather than forcing TWRP...follow the instructions in this thread choosing MTD choice and then use the CWM recovery that will already be on the phone to flash your choice of ROMs. TWRP does not work with everything on this phone.

This is the guide I followed to root. (As well as qbking77 guide) I tried both MTD and BML once I failed and it's the same problem. Once I flash your deodexed rom it works but if I try to flash a different rom it doesn't work or at least one of the latest rom. I know in Schism rom it said to update to the latest TWRP or CWM but when I try with CWM it doesn't work and if I try to install TWRP I end up bricking the phone which I have to restore again.
Alright I followed everything on the thread and used MTD again. I checked and I'm fully rooted. Now I'm gonna try to flash the rom I'm trying to flash. I'm assuming I should Wipe before installing the rom right? Since the stock and custom build are different.

If you did not set anything up you do not have to wipe.

It failed again. I did not wipe and for some reason it still does not work. Once I install the Rom from zip it says Checking State of BML/MTD and it reboots once it reboots it just stays on the Samsung Cyanogenmod screen. I waited for five minutes and nothing happens. Also sometimes when I do try it just stays in a black screen with the buttons at the bottom glowing.

Go back into CWM and format /system, format /data and format /cache and try again.
