The WiFi on my phone seems to be limited to 3-4Mbps. At home I have a 12M connection. If I run a SpeedTest.net test from my Laptop on WiFi I will get 10-12Mbps. Seconds later run SpeedTest.net on my phone.... 3-4, sometime 5. This does not seem to be isolated to the Verizon HTC One. My son-in-law has the One on Sprint and we have observed the same thing.
Does anyone know if is a ROM, Radio, or possibly antenna issue? Is anyone else having the same problem? And most importantly does anyone know of a fix!!!

I did not test with the One but I did experience the same issue with my Rezound. I get about 50M on WiFi on my computer but my phone gets significantly lower speeds. I have a work iPhone 5 and it gets almost the full 50M on WiFi too.
Huh

That's 802.11 AC and why I love HTC hardware. They typically use the best stuff. My router is a netgear r6300 running dd-wrt.
The router will do up to 1.3gbps over wifi too.

wow...... Nice!!!
Yes, after doing some research I discovered that the HTC One "needs" a router that supports 802.11 ac to gain true speeds. While this is cool that the phone supports this latest version of 802.11, it is ridiculous that the phone does not also support the older routers fully. A standard g router is rated at 54Mbps, so there is no reason to be stuck at 7Mbps. Plus my router is a 802.11 n and rated at 300Mbps.
Any way, it looks like if I want access to the full bandwidth of my home internet on my phone, I will have to drop $150-$250 for a 802.11 ac router.

What speeds are you getting when you run a speed test? Also what monthly service speed are you paying for?
Thanks
Awesome replies people...I just learned something new today.
I am going to check my router configs when I get home to see if that is part of the problem of why I can't access the xda app truly from wifi...
These are my speeds at home. I pay nothing for internet. I work in engineering for the company that provides it. I have no doubt I could peg a speed test at work to whatever my highest link speed is.
This is on my home 50/10 speedtier

I seem to get amazing speeds in my phone using SpeedTest.net's Android app but when I setup WiFi Tether to my laptop and try the same test from SpeedTest.net, the speed drops dramatically.
in-Phone speed: 6-7mbps
laptop speed over Wifi Tether: 1.4-1.5mbps
Is there something I'm doing wrong or missing? What kinds of speeds are you guys getting?
Sounds like your phone speed is from Wimax or Wifi.
Wireless tether only uses 3G. Which would put it about right.
What? I thought we could do Wifi Tether with 4G and that was the point of having 4G?
That would be retarded if we had to do it over 3G.
When I Wifi Tether, my 4G icon is still on.
Also, I'm using Myn's ROM. I tested it before and after applying the "remove speed throttling" hack and both results in the same poor results.
Im having this same issue... wtf.
Well the data governor hack dosent make 4g or 3g any faster it just removes the overall data cap that sprint sets. I too have noticed a distinct difference in speed with wifi tether and I asked about this before m, being told that wifi tether uses 4g but from my own personal findings is that the phone gets preety warm when using tether and the warmer it gets say above 90 degrees the performance sucks. I put the phone in my window sill and get that temp to about 75 it works flawlessly. Idk if this is the correlation that were missing but it sure would be nice to know for sure if it is using 4g or not

I get that speed about 25% of the time. Normally, it's more between 4-6/7mbps
But SpeedTest.net scores are DECEIVING. I think all these ISP's have figured out that we use it for testing so they optimized somehow to score higher. I don't get anywhere near those speeds when streaming from SouthparkStudios.com.
I wish SpeedTest would change their algorithm or whatever so ISP's can't rig their scores.
nice thread to have found - I was wondering how some people had such high speeds also - the best I have gotten is 5 mbps myself - think I have gotten 1.5 mbps up once but usually 900 kbps to 1 mbps if 4G is on - had full bars above the 4G once and still didn't test that great.
btw Neo3D do you mind letting me know what that blue icon is in your status bar? just wondering (never seen that)
also just this past friday I ran tests with a friend's iphone 3 and wifi tether is definitely slow slow slow (has the latest and greatest wifi security etc. but slow)
we ran the same tests using barnacle wifi tether and everything was much faster - has less security as in it only uses WEP (if you configure it) that I could find (not saying I didn't miss something tho - I am still digging into the program)
as for tests, we did netflix streaming and downloaded a 20 MB app and timed it (big difference in how long it took) and used speedtest.net app (big difference showed in this app to)
if anyone knows of a reason why more people don't use barnacle please let me know - I always see everyone referencing and saying to use wireless tether
Well I have been trying to figure out what is happening with my WiFi speeds on my Nexus. I just moved a few days ago and I now have some pretty fast internet unfortunately no 4G here so I rely on the WiFi. With my new faster WiFi I noticed I was getting slower speeds than with my other devices in the house. I have 2 Galaxy Tabs 10.1 and 2 Galaxy Notes, and a Thunderbolt. With all my other devices I get about 30 Mbps down, but on my Nexus I just can't get good speeds. I average about 11-12 Mbps with an occasional 16-17 Mbps still half of what I'm getting with my other devices.
I have a netgear router which has 802.11n so all of these devices should work. I have tried everything but nothings makes it any better. Today I got my first replacement and it has the same problem or issue.
I have made a Video. Sorry for the quality I was in a hurry in not so good lighting.
If you have any comments or suggestion please post them below.
Youtube Video: http://youtu.be/Zc1O96De7OU
Sorry the video audio cuts out at about 4:30 but in the end you can see some of the results from Today.
Wow I guess nobody else has the same problem.

Could be your router. They don't make good routers anymore that aren't simultaneous dual band. Your GNex sounds like it's the only dual-band device you have.

Well according to specs, the Galaxy Tabs, and the Galaxy Notes are Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n so I would think they are multi band as well. What gets me is the other devices work good, only the Nexus will not perform on the Wifi like the others.
If it was the router I don't think the other devices would work good. Maybe I'm wrong.
I experience about the same speeds. I've got a Netgear 802.11g router at home and pull maybe 11-14mbps depending. But over at my parent's house with a Cisco/Linksys 802.11n router (same ISP), I get about the same speeds, maxing out at maybe 17-18mbps.
That obviously doesn't feel slow by any means though. Never sat there thinking that I'm getting inferior speeds. 17mbps is kinda overkill for the phone, especially with super small ping times.

Not sure what your parents speed is supposed to be, would be interesting to know? And it's not a issue of overkill, it is just something is not right with the WiFi on this phone. For myself I use the WiFi heavily especially since I only have 3 G where I live so I would like to take advantage of the fully capable speeds I have.
Anyone with a fast internet connection (30 Mbps +) can you test your Wifi speeds with your Nexus and post your results. I want to see if anyone can get a fast speed close to your PC or other devices.
Mine goes about as fast as anything else on my network but I have DSL... 3mbps tops
Edit: Actually the upload speed is reporting as faster than my internet actually is. (554kbps when my cap is 384kbps and my PC reads 320kbps) I vaguely remember a reviewer saying there was a bug in the Speedtest.net app that caches uploads or something like that and reports higher than it actually is.
Download speed is reading what it should be though.

Thats what I have charter, and I can't get much more than what you showed on a regular basis. But on my other devices I can consistently get 30 Mbps.
Thanks for helping I appreciate it.
Here is the speed with my Galaxy Note
Just reporting that I have wifi issues as well. My router is downstairs so it may as well be a penetration issue, but I'm pulling less than 5mbps on a 10mbps cable internet connection.
I've done numerous tests in the past with an EVO 3D, iPod Touch, and GS2. All report 10mbps consistently even when I'm upstairs while the Nexus struggles to load a webpage. I also tried a test downstairs and the Nexus did well pulling 10mbps but it is also inconsistent.
This is a weird problem.
No problem. download Adobe air!
It fixed and improved YouTube

Very interesting. I have TWC and their 30 down 5 up plan and I only see 11-12 down with the nexus. Something just not right with the nexus. Ran the test at the same spot with my wife's T-Mobile GS2 and hers maxed out at our TWC 30/5 limit. WHAT THE HECK! And this spot is 3 -5 ft away from the wifi router. Maybe the new drivers in 4.0.4 fix this issue?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Hmm, after redoing the test downstairs, my wifi speeds seem to be in line with my other devices. Still does not solve the inconsistent speeds when I'm upstairs though, whereas my other devices plow through the speeds with consistency.
I just got my nexus and having problems with my wifi connection . YouTube is stopping, audio stream Pandora or tune in radio all stopping and playing . Never had problem with any other phones. I havevthe galaxybs 2 and the note and they have no problem streaming any video or audio.

Is anyone else using a dual band router? Which one?
I got a Netgear WNDR3700 a couple of years ago and the 5ghz band is super weak. Through one wall about 10 feet from the router I'm only getting 3 bars. At 20 feet and no walls I get 2 bars.
Any ideas or tips? I'm kind of bummed I shelled out the cash for a dual band router when it doesn't really seem very useful. Unless our phones can run simultaneous connections?

This doesn't surprise me. A 5ghz signal will have a shorter range than 2.4ghz, and will have a harder time going through walls and other objects. The only real advantage to a 5ghz signal is that less electronic equipment uses this frequency, so there will be less network interference.

I'm just surprised by how short the range is. It seems like it'd only be useful within the same room but at that point why not just use gigabit for file transfers and stuff?
For our phones the highest linkspeed on 2.4ghz I've seen is 65mpbs and on 5ghz 150mbps. On my PC I'm getting 300mbps/300mbps. It's a little disappointing that the radio inside the phone isn't a higher standard but it works fine for me. If you wanted to do a lot of file transfers or streaming DLNA, all share, WiFi connect, w.e else we have access to it'd be nice to see those higher speeds.
I'm getting another single band router on Monday so I'll see what kinds of speeds that gives me. At the very least I can use it to get WiFi in my laundry room.
Do you guys think 5ghz is just a fad? Or is it only useful in things that have a stronger antenna? Like my PC that has an external adapter.

Honestly, i have experienced poor wifi on my device irregardless, im getting a warranty replacement sometime this week, i will def check the differences side by side, if they are different, i will let you know. If they are the same, then our devices WiFi just sucks. lol
I have the same exact router with the same problem. In my bedroom I get about 3 bars of 2.4 signal, where I get 0-1 with 5 signal. As stated above this is normal, but FYI, our routers are known to have pretty crappy 5ghz signal.
This is weird too. I'm about 15 feet away with 2 walls between me and the router and I'm getting 4 bars. In my kitchen 15 feet away with no walls I get 3... This is on 2.4ghz on the new Linksys router. Maybe cuz I was next to the microwave? It was OFF though..
Just microwaved something... No effect.
I hate technology though.

I got the WNR4000 and it works pretty good but I put DD-WRT on it and boosted the signal a little bit, not sure if it really helped but i get the 5Ghz range in the whole house and 2.4 the front and backyard. I used my old router as a repeater to reach the waaaay backyard. Ours is 1 acre longways lol. So i got good coverage just with the WNR4000 alone actually.

Holy hell batman! Your school must be on dual band .N or even .AC, i'm stuck sadly on the 2.4ghz .N channel, so hence the bottleneck. Our Universities fiber pipe can go well beyond that.

Disconnect from your schools wifi and see how fast it goes.

My previous photo is from where I work, we have a 1Gb fiber connection, I have seen speedtests as high as 260Mbps on my Note3. On my coworkers new Macbook Pro he can get about 300Mbps from the same access point (Aruba ap-225 AC). Wired and when the students are off campus, I can get 800Mbps, so there is some bottleneck with the wireless throughput, but the Note 3 is nearly as good as the MBP, which is really something!
whoops forgot photo of wired speedtest

I noticed he was referring to his internet connection in the screenshot after I posted. The title indicates the WIFI speed capacity the Note 3 will handle not who has the fastest internet connection. My internet is only 30 down and 5 up which is still plenty fast. The highest link speed on the WIFI connection on my note 3 was 384 I believe. I have an AC router and that is on the 5GHz connection. The 2.4GHz isn't as fast.

Wired and when the students are off campus, I can get 800Mbps, so there is some bottleneck with the wireless throughput, but the Note 3 is nearly as good as the MBP, which is really something!

I never thought I'd hate someone for their bandwidth, but you, sir, have earned it. ?

I noticed he was referring to his internet connection in the screenshot after I posted. The title indicates the WIFI speed capacity the Note 3 will handle not who has the fastest internet connection. My internet is only 30 down and 5 up which is still plenty fast. The highest link speed on the WIFI connection on my note 3 was 384 I believe. I have an AC router and that is on the 5GHz connection. The 2.4GHz isn't as fast.

We have done lots of testing on link speed vs actual throughput at work, and even the MacBook Pro's with new AC wireless cards to our Aruba ap-225's say 800Mbps link speed, but we are lucky to pull 400Mbps in local file transfer tests. The AC speeds are all theoretical, actual transfer will likely never be close to link speed, but the firmware on our Arubas is still not optimal, so I know that is our bottleneck.

I obviously must have been living in a tree like a hermit since the 21st century came along. I was not even aware of speeds via wi fi like this.
HAHA and this was me thinking my 30 meg up and 2 meg down was lightning.
Imagine this thread on dialup lol

Oh yes, the golden days 2400 baud rate dial up . Seemed like yesterday! I am assuming these types of speeds is near impossible for home set ups? In my area I think the fastest is 50 meg down via Bright House.
Well I'm in Mexico right now and the Hotel's WiFi reminds of the Dial Up days. Right now I'll take any of the slowest speeds posted. I think I'm getting less then 1mb dowbload. This trip made me appreciate how far data speeds have come in the U.S.

I'm using the T-Mobile ASUS Router. But on my LG G4 The WiFi Link Speed can barely get to 263Mbps in the same room as the router. When I walk out of the room its go down to 6Mbps. When I had my Nexus 6 I could of had gotten 866Mbps on the WiFi Link Speed, Which my Nexus 9 Tablet shows right now. I'm wondering if there anyway I can fix this? I plan on getting 1000Mbps Internet soon from AT&T, Once its finished over here. So the higher my Cell phone can get should mean faster wifi speeds on this LG G4.

Nexus 9
I just want to know if I can change my WiFi Link Speed?
I am having similar issues on the 5GHz band but not when I'm on 2.4GHz. I am putting this down to the nature of 5GHz -- the 2.4GHz is generally better at penetrating through walls and concrete than higher frequency bands such as 5GHz, and I am getting much better results on the 2.4GHz band (I have several concrete walls between me and the router) even though it's congested.
In terms of overall throughput, you might want to read up on how speed multiples are achieved using 802.11ac.. it might be that bigger devices such as the nexus 9 have an advantage over phones and phablets in that they can cram more and bigger antennae into the case, and thus are capable to achieving the higher speed multiples. (The laws of physics still apply.)
Noticed this this morning my s5 is connecting to my dlink 868I @833 mbs my g4 is doing 270ish, still love the phone and the s5 had probs at launch no doubt LG will iron them out.

My WiFi speeds are very hit or miss. Sometimes snappy, sometimes very slow. I had no such issues on my S4. I actually have WiFi turned off because it's frustrating. Any ideas??
I'm also having issues on my H810 on the 5Ghz band. It works for a while but it always seems to hang on this connection. As soon as I switch to the 2.4Ghz all is normal. Maybe bad drivers?

That sounds like my issue. So if I switch my router to 2.4ghz, I should be okay?

In my experience, yes it solves the problem. Its weird that the 5Ghz band is so shady on this phone, I can be sitting right across from my router and it will act up.

2.4GHz can only go up to 144Mbps, and likely only 72Mbps on this phone with one antenna.
You won't get 866Mbps on the G4, as it only has one antenna, meaning it caps at 433Mbps.
On your Asus router, make sure you are using a higher frequency like channel 149. Even though the regulations changed recently, it has severely lowered power output on channels 36-49.

Yes, the link speed on 2.4 isn't even close to what it is on 5Ghz. But I would rather have a stable connection, even if it is a slower one.
I too am having problems on my H815 with wifi. I usually only connect to 5ghz and i am seeing multiple times where the wifi either disconnects totally but even worse is when the signal is fine but internet is not connected. Seems like a firmware issue that they will need an upgrade to fix...guess i will be using 2.4 for a little while

Thanks, that was the clue i needed to figure out why my G4 would not connect to my 5ghz n non ac wifi.
Turns out the H818N G4 only sees, channels 149 - 165 on the 5Ghz band and not 36-48, one of which was set earlier.
My sammy's did not complain though.
Has anyone found a fix for this? Using my Dell Venue 8 7000 in my bedroom I get my full 75mbs over WiFi. Using my VZW G4 I get all of 2mbs. Router is an ASUS RT-AC66R with the latest firmware.
well out of topic kinda but i am offered a nexus 6 for my G4 as u used both of them what do u think ?

May be a hardware issue then... that sucks. I love that phone even after switching over to the 6P full time. Just use 2.4 and you will be fine...not really any slower anyway
Did anyone resolve problem with slow wifi (I have for both - 2.4 and 5GHz)?
I detect the problem in ipv6 protocol - from this site http://phandroid.com/2015/05/13/comcast-wireless-gateway-lollipop-bug/
If I install the app (it makes VPN), web sites open immediately....but i don'tlike it, because it self warns you someone can spy on you, steal my passwords, mails, etc.
