Problems with WiFi download speeds VZW Nexus

Well I have been trying to figure out what is happening with my WiFi speeds on my Nexus. I just moved a few days ago and I now have some pretty fast internet unfortunately no 4G here so I rely on the WiFi. With my new faster WiFi I noticed I was getting slower speeds than with my other devices in the house. I have 2 Galaxy Tabs 10.1 and 2 Galaxy Notes, and a Thunderbolt. With all my other devices I get about 30 Mbps down, but on my Nexus I just can't get good speeds. I average about 11-12 Mbps with an occasional 16-17 Mbps still half of what I'm getting with my other devices.
I have a netgear router which has 802.11n so all of these devices should work. I have tried everything but nothings makes it any better. Today I got my first replacement and it has the same problem or issue.
I have made a Video. Sorry for the quality I was in a hurry in not so good lighting.

Wow I guess nobody else has the same problem.

Try changing the wifi frequency band to 5ghz only in advanced settings.

Could be your router. They don't make good routers anymore that aren't simultaneous dual band. Your GNex sounds like it's the only dual-band device you have.

Well according to specs, the Galaxy Tabs, and the Galaxy Notes are Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n so I would think they are multi band as well. What gets me is the other devices work good, only the Nexus will not perform on the Wifi like the others.
If it was the router I don't think the other devices would work good. Maybe I'm wrong.

I experience about the same speeds. I've got a Netgear 802.11g router at home and pull maybe 11-14mbps depending. But over at my parent's house with a Cisco/Linksys 802.11n router (same ISP), I get about the same speeds, maxing out at maybe 17-18mbps.
That obviously doesn't feel slow by any means though. Never sat there thinking that I'm getting inferior speeds. 17mbps is kinda overkill for the phone, especially with super small ping times.

Not sure what your parents speed is supposed to be, would be interesting to know? And it's not a issue of overkill, it is just something is not right with the WiFi on this phone. For myself I use the WiFi heavily especially since I only have 3 G where I live so I would like to take advantage of the fully capable speeds I have.

Anyone with a fast internet connection (30 Mbps +) can you test your Wifi speeds with your Nexus and post your results. I want to see if anyone can get a fast speed close to your PC or other devices.

Mine goes about as fast as anything else on my network but I have DSL... 3mbps tops
Edit: Actually the upload speed is reporting as faster than my internet actually is. (554kbps when my cap is 384kbps and my PC reads 320kbps) I vaguely remember a reviewer saying there was a bug in the Speedtest.net app that caches uploads or something like that and reports higher than it actually is.
Download speed is reading what it should be though.

Yes thanks, but I don't seem to see a difference with speeds below 12-15 Mbps so I really need someone with a faster connection to try.

Thats what I have charter, and I can't get much more than what you showed on a regular basis. But on my other devices I can consistently get 30 Mbps.

Just reporting that I have wifi issues as well. My router is downstairs so it may as well be a penetration issue, but I'm pulling less than 5mbps on a 10mbps cable internet connection.
I've done numerous tests in the past with an EVO 3D, iPod Touch, and GS2. All report 10mbps consistently even when I'm upstairs while the Nexus struggles to load a webpage. I also tried a test downstairs and the Nexus did well pulling 10mbps but it is also inconsistent.
This is a weird problem.

Very interesting. I have TWC and their 30 down 5 up plan and I only see 11-12 down with the nexus. Something just not right with the nexus. Ran the test at the same spot with my wife's T-Mobile GS2 and hers maxed out at our TWC 30/5 limit. WHAT THE HECK! And this spot is 3 -5 ft away from the wifi router. Maybe the new drivers in 4.0.4 fix this issue?

Hmm, after redoing the test downstairs, my wifi speeds seem to be in line with my other devices. Still does not solve the inconsistent speeds when I'm upstairs though, whereas my other devices plow through the speeds with consistency.

I just got my nexus and having problems with my wifi connection . YouTube is stopping, audio stream Pandora or tune in radio all stopping and playing . Never had problem with any other phones. I havevthe galaxybs 2 and the note and they have no problem streaming any video or audio.

Antennagate on my AT&T SGS3

hi all.
please feel free to unfold your opinions and suggestions.
What i have: rooted stock SGS3 on LH9 ( latest OTA) + Diztronic Matte Black TPU Case found on this link:

Environment: I am inside a big hangar not for planes but more like a warehouse, every morning at the exact same place. there is no concrete walls or windows just the hangar structure walls and a big exit door for trucks. i am like 300 yards away from a optimum broadband router on a public street. in NJ if you are a Optimum customer you can connect via wifi up to 5 devices when in reach of routers they installed on public streets.
Issue: when i turn on wifi i have no bars for Optimum connection( it connects successfully but internet is quite impossible at very slow speed. If I take off Diztronic case I immediately get 2 bars on my wifi icon, and the connection is flawless and the speeds for any app are good.
Is this case particularly that bad for my wifi connection?
All cases in general influence the wifi connection/cell modem or just this one?
Or is it how am I holding it? Am I holding it wrong way?
Workaround: every morning I take off my case, read my Twitter, G+ and Flipboard than I put my case back on.:silly:

I have no case on mine, but I do notice if I am kinda far from the router and hold phone with my right hand I get a worse wifi signal then when holding with left hand. Cell signal seems unaffected.

Not unheard of. HTC Inspire gps antenna was problematic with some cases

I have the same exact case and my WiFi ranfomly drops on with the diztronic case I brought for only $10 . I brought a new puregear case yesterday and never had WiFi issues since

All cases affect signal quality to a certain extent, but it's mostly negligible and a worthwhile trade-off for the protection gained. Should be fine as long as you don't use a METAL case, like some geniuses insist on using for a "premium-quality" feel (whatever that's supposed to mean).
Or is it how am I holding it? Am I holding it wrong way?

Well, as corythug mentioned above, and despite the apple joke, you CAN get better reception by holding your phone in certain ways, since the antennas are located in certain spots (as shown in the FCC photo below):

I almost always fallback from N to G even in my house. #2 thing to do is to buy a better WiFi router (like the Netgear WNDR3700) that lets you hack it with DDWRT so you can increase the transmit power above legal FCC limits.

I learned a lot.
I will read news every morning at the same spot, with my naked SGS3, holding it certain way.

802.11n also runs on 2.4 Ghz, not just 5 Ghz. Now, the new 802.11AC standard only runs on 5 Ghz, so no 2.4 there.

[Q] Unstable 5GHz

I'm having issues with my GNex on 5GHz networks. The networks drop out and are generally unstable. It is not the networks themselves that are unstable, as the signal is rock stable on nearby laptops.
The blue line is the 5GHz network. It is the only 5GHz network within range, so interference is unlikely to be the issue. This router is a WNDR4000, which is pretty much rock solid on both frequencies. The 5GHz network is on channel 48, no automatic channel setup.

Anyone know what might be the issue? Is 5Ghz working fine for others? Is my HW broken?
(I'll be pretty pissed if my HW is broken TBH. I got it back from its third service today...)

There is a hardware issue with 5GHz WiFi on the Galaxy Nexus. I can only connect to 5GHz WiFi networks if I am standing directly next to the router. There is a thread regarding this issue.

Welcome to the Galaxy Nexus. Just pretend it never had 5ghz support, you'll be far happier for it. My 5ghz up and stopped working entirely when the phone was only a month or so old. 2.4 is still going strong, although at lower speeds then any other device connected to it. Samsung put a real joke of a wifi chip in this phone.

My Nexus must be defective. I'm hooked to a 5Ghz network without issues.

Did you pay attention during Physics class?
Higher frequencies will not penetrate things like walls or yourself as good as lower frequencies, think 800MHz and 2.4GHz WiFi, the cell tower obviously can penetrate buildings better. Just you turning away from the router can make the bars drop a bar or 2.

Yes, I did. Did you pay attention to what I wrote? Using my laptop in the same location, I get >20MB/s speeds on 5GHz without a hitch and the signal is rock steady.
We're talking line of sight, 3-4 meters of air. Not really something that 5GHz should have trouble penetrating.

Then disregard what i said, i'm just trying to say that just turning your body can make your signal drop.
And you can't compare a "high powered" card in your laptop to the one in your phone..

Well, actually I can. Monitoring the signal on my laptop shows a rock solid signal. Pretty much anywhere in the house actually.
So the signal in itself is good and stable. Now, I expect the reception to be somewhat worse on the GNex due to antenna limitations and space restrictions for the tranciever. However, I can still expect a signal that doesn't go completely dead for 5-20 seconds at a time while being in the same room as the router. My One X does not have these dropouts, I only experience these with the GNex.
I don't expect even half the speed or reception compared to my laptop, but I expect the signal to be somewhat stable on the GNex when there are no issues on the laptop.

Comparing the gnex to the one x is fine, but to a laptop is a big no no. Laptops have more power to the wlan card, not to mention it have more antenna than the gnex. If it works fine on the one x, then yes, the gnex have problems.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?

The laptop is my "baseline", verifying that the signal is on and stable 100% percent of the time. The amount of power is of little importance, since we're only talking recieving, not transmitting. The signal won't be as good as the laptop due to the antennas (as I already pointed out. Did you read what I wrote?), but I should be able to compare the stability of the signal. And it's definitely not good.

Because not all locations I visit have 2,4GHz. And 5GHz is much less crowded than 2,4GHz. Infact, at home, there are no other 5GHz networks at all.

I get max 23 down and 2 up sitting next to my router. Other rooms 12 down 1.4 up. Cisco dual band router

Holy hell batman! Your school must be on dual band .N or even .AC, i'm stuck sadly on the 2.4ghz .N channel, so hence the bottleneck. Our Universities fiber pipe can go well beyond that.

EDIT: Also, what's the point of hiding your IP address and not your latitude and longitude?

Wireless ac 433 is very fast... I get 125/24 full speed of my comcast connection... Asus rt-ac68u ftw

My previous photo is from where I work, we have a 1Gb fiber connection, I have seen speedtests as high as 260Mbps on my Note3. On my coworkers new Macbook Pro he can get about 300Mbps from the same access point (Aruba ap-225 AC). Wired and when the students are off campus, I can get 800Mbps, so there is some bottleneck with the wireless throughput, but the Note 3 is nearly as good as the MBP, which is really something!

I noticed he was referring to his internet connection in the screenshot after I posted. The title indicates the WIFI speed capacity the Note 3 will handle not who has the fastest internet connection. My internet is only 30 down and 5 up which is still plenty fast. The highest link speed on the WIFI connection on my note 3 was 384 I believe. I have an AC router and that is on the 5GHz connection. The 2.4GHz isn't as fast.

We have done lots of testing on link speed vs actual throughput at work, and even the MacBook Pro's with new AC wireless cards to our Aruba ap-225's say 800Mbps link speed, but we are lucky to pull 400Mbps in local file transfer tests. The AC speeds are all theoretical, actual transfer will likely never be close to link speed, but the firmware on our Arubas is still not optimal, so I know that is our bottleneck.

Oh yes, the golden days 2400 baud rate dial up . Seemed like yesterday! I am assuming these types of speeds is near impossible for home set ups? In my area I think the fastest is 50 meg down via Bright House.

Well I'm in Mexico right now and the Hotel's WiFi reminds of the Dial Up days. Right now I'll take any of the slowest speeds posted. I think I'm getting less then 1mb dowbload. This trip made me appreciate how far data speeds have come in the U.S.

[Q] LG G4 Wifi Link Speed?

I'm using the T-Mobile ASUS Router. But on my LG G4 The WiFi Link Speed can barely get to 263Mbps in the same room as the router. When I walk out of the room its go down to 6Mbps. When I had my Nexus 6 I could of had gotten 866Mbps on the WiFi Link Speed, Which my Nexus 9 Tablet shows right now. I'm wondering if there anyway I can fix this? I plan on getting 1000Mbps Internet soon from AT&T, Once its finished over here. So the higher my Cell phone can get should mean faster wifi speeds on this LG G4.

I am having similar issues on the 5GHz band but not when I'm on 2.4GHz. I am putting this down to the nature of 5GHz -- the 2.4GHz is generally better at penetrating through walls and concrete than higher frequency bands such as 5GHz, and I am getting much better results on the 2.4GHz band (I have several concrete walls between me and the router) even though it's congested.
In terms of overall throughput, you might want to read up on how speed multiples are achieved using 802.11ac.. it might be that bigger devices such as the nexus 9 have an advantage over phones and phablets in that they can cram more and bigger antennae into the case, and thus are capable to achieving the higher speed multiples. (The laws of physics still apply.)

Noticed this this morning my s5 is connecting to my dlink 868I @833 mbs my g4 is doing 270ish, still love the phone and the s5 had probs at launch no doubt LG will iron them out.

My WiFi speeds are very hit or miss. Sometimes snappy, sometimes very slow. I had no such issues on my S4. I actually have WiFi turned off because it's frustrating. Any ideas??

I'm also having issues on my H810 on the 5Ghz band. It works for a while but it always seems to hang on this connection. As soon as I switch to the 2.4Ghz all is normal. Maybe bad drivers?

That sounds like my issue. So if I switch my router to 2.4ghz, I should be okay?

In my experience, yes it solves the problem. Its weird that the 5Ghz band is so shady on this phone, I can be sitting right across from my router and it will act up.

2.4GHz can only go up to 144Mbps, and likely only 72Mbps on this phone with one antenna.
You won't get 866Mbps on the G4, as it only has one antenna, meaning it caps at 433Mbps.
On your Asus router, make sure you are using a higher frequency like channel 149. Even though the regulations changed recently, it has severely lowered power output on channels 36-49.

Yes, the link speed on 2.4 isn't even close to what it is on 5Ghz. But I would rather have a stable connection, even if it is a slower one.

I too am having problems on my H815 with wifi. I usually only connect to 5ghz and i am seeing multiple times where the wifi either disconnects totally but even worse is when the signal is fine but internet is not connected. Seems like a firmware issue that they will need an upgrade to fix...guess i will be using 2.4 for a little while

Thanks, that was the clue i needed to figure out why my G4 would not connect to my 5ghz n non ac wifi.
Turns out the H818N G4 only sees, channels 149 - 165 on the 5Ghz band and not 36-48, one of which was set earlier.
My sammy's did not complain though.

Has anyone found a fix for this? Using my Dell Venue 8 7000 in my bedroom I get my full 75mbs over WiFi. Using my VZW G4 I get all of 2mbs. Router is an ASUS RT-AC66R with the latest firmware.

well out of topic kinda but i am offered a nexus 6 for my G4 as u used both of them what do u think ?

Same problem with my H815 on Android 6 MM. But not only problem with 5ghz but also same on 2.4ghz

May be a hardware issue then... that sucks. I love that phone even after switching over to the 6P full time. Just use 2.4 and you will be fine...not really any slower anyway

Did anyone resolve problem with slow wifi (I have for both - 2.4 and 5GHz)?

If I install the app (it makes VPN), web sites open immediately....but i don'tlike it, because it self warns you someone can spy on you, steal my passwords, mails, etc.
