hi all.
please feel free to unfold your opinions and suggestions.
What i have: rooted stock SGS3 on LH9 ( latest OTA) + Diztronic Matte Black TPU Case found on this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722606
Environment: I am inside a big hangar not for planes but more like a warehouse, every morning at the exact same place. there is no concrete walls or windows just the hangar structure walls and a big exit door for trucks. i am like 300 yards away from a optimum broadband router on a public street. in NJ if you are a Optimum customer you can connect via wifi up to 5 devices when in reach of routers they installed on public streets.
Issue: when i turn on wifi i have no bars for Optimum connection( it connects successfully but internet is quite impossible at very slow speed. If I take off Diztronic case I immediately get 2 bars on my wifi icon, and the connection is flawless and the speeds for any app are good.
Is this case particularly that bad for my wifi connection?
All cases in general influence the wifi connection/cell modem or just this one?
Or is it how am I holding it? Am I holding it wrong way?
Workaround: every morning I take off my case, read my Twitter, G+ and Flipboard than I put my case back on.:silly:
Thanks
I have no case on mine, but I do notice if I am kinda far from the router and hold phone with my right hand I get a worse wifi signal then when holding with left hand. Cell signal seems unaffected.

Not unheard of. HTC Inspire gps antenna was problematic with some cases
I have the same exact case and my WiFi ranfomly drops on with the diztronic case I brought for only $10 . I brought a new puregear case yesterday and never had WiFi issues since

All cases affect signal quality to a certain extent, but it's mostly negligible and a worthwhile trade-off for the protection gained. Should be fine as long as you don't use a METAL case, like some geniuses insist on using for a "premium-quality" feel (whatever that's supposed to mean).

Well, as corythug mentioned above, and despite the apple joke, you CAN get better reception by holding your phone in certain ways, since the antennas are located in certain spots (as shown in the FCC photo below):

The #1 thing to do to get better range (for at least WiFi), if you haven't done this already, is to use wireless G instead of wireless N, even though it's "slower" (you won't notice). Wireless-G's 2.4GHz longer wavelengths travel farther & through objects better than 5GHz. I almost always fallback from N to G even in my house. #2 thing to do is to buy a better WiFi router (like the Netgear WNDR3700) that lets you hack it with DDWRT so you can increase the transmit power above legal FCC limits.

I learned a lot.
I will read news every morning at the same spot, with my naked SGS3, holding it certain way.
802.11n also runs on 2.4 Ghz, not just 5 Ghz. Now, the new 802.11AC standard only runs on 5 Ghz, so no 2.4 there.

Is there anyway to boost the wifi on this thing. I have 3 tablets (samsung tab 7, Lenovo Ideapad K1, and this) Samsung and Lenovo keeps connection with my home router but this one it disconnects half the time. Kinda frustrating. I assume this also will kill my battery faster than it already does. Any advice?
EDIT:
So I exchanged my tablet and still the replacement has bad wifi. I figure this had to be hardware related so following the procedure here I decided to take it upon myself to figure it out. If youre not comfortable doing this I suggest just keep returning your unit till you get a good one. Note when you remove the first side bezel there's a black sticker over one of the screws. I was able to remove it easily with an exacto knife being careful not to rip it so I can put it back on later. After removing the 3 sides except for the power button side (not necessary) you remove the back off and you end up with this.

I'm not sure which is the wifi antenna or if they work as a pair but I moved both antenna connectors around (I didnt try to remove it cause this might make the connectors loose) and moved the black antenna right on top the camera. Reference all the red arrows. I left the tablet on so I was able to tell if it was making a difference. Eventually got it to get 2 bars just like on my Lenovo Ideapad! Possibly one of the micro coax connetors was not making good contact. These are the same RF connectors on RC receivers so they are a little more susceptible in losing contact specially if they're too lose. So just move them side to side and dont remove or lift them off.
Prior to this I was alternating between no bar and 1. This time it consistently stayed at 2 bars regardless how I moved or where I moved in my room (our router is in another room upstairs). Carefully put the tablet back together and now my connection is stable 2 bars. Finally!
So it does seem like there's some QA issue with these tablets. There's a huge thread in the acertabletforum about this issue and some say to change your connection from DHCP to static but that doesnt make logic sense to me. Some have been able to exhange theirs gotten good replacements.
Anyhow if you have any question, let me know.
I was actually thinking that wifi going out when it's turned off might be on purpose to prolong the crappy battery life.

Not when its turned off. Theres a setting for that to disable wifi when you turn screen off. But thats not what I'm talking about. My wifi disconnects as I'm surfing or downloading from market or a file.
hmm, does it look like it has a weak signal strength or are you sitting at a good connection and it drops all of the sudden?
If it isn't a weak connection, I assume the device is just having a problem with your router settings. Maybe call support to see if they can give you information, but I haven't heard of this issue. What about open networks at coffee shops or the like? Do you have the same issues?
This is my third tablet and this tablet has the best WiFi that I have seen so far, so I don't think it is a problem with the signal strength.
Maybe I have a bad unit but I went to Bestbuy today and the a100 could not connect to their bestbuy router. It says "not in range". All the other ones (galaxys, xooms, acer, asus, HTC flyer all were connected to bestbuy wifi. HTC and samsung were the better ones at full bars. Acer had 2 and asus had 3. I don't recall what the xooms were. But man what a disappointment. The only thing good was that the a100 was the cheapest at $249. They must've brought the price down again.

Oh ok. Updated OP so looks like version number is irrelevant in my case.
This Pong case seemed quite interesting after I had first heard about it. After doing a little research on this case, I found some interesting facts that the case itself claims to have. First of all, it says that reduces radiation exposure (SAR) by up to 64% and it improves signal strength by up to 56%.
Once I had received the package, I can say that it came in a nice package. The box contained a screen protector, a small cleaning cloth, and the case itself.

The soft touch feeling (matte finish) of the case makes it feel really nice in the hand and also makes it non-slippery. It has all the cutouts it need for the USB connection, headphone jack, volume rockers, and the power button. There is also a cutout on the top of the case that makes the design of it look nice. Here are some pictures of the case.
Overall, the case itself is really nice, adds almost no bulk, and gives the phone great protection. I have yet to test out the signal improvements, so I can't say for sure that the case provides a signal boost. Any questions you guys have, I'll try my best to answer.

for 60 dollars it better make me bacon in the morning.
I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but these: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail-order_bride should definitely make bacon for you. Not sure about phone protection though.
It seems like this case is not focused on style rather than protection, but I can't say for sure since I haven't used one yet. I would be interested if it weren't so expensive.

PONG GALAXY NEXUS UNLOCKED CASE REVIEW ---> I live outside the Washington DC Suburbs. I performed several signal tests with and without case on. All test was performed on T-mobile Network, under exact same circumstances. My test is not an individual test, this review is posted after 10 tests with case and 10 tests without case. My house is at the sweet spot, where I get consistent (-107dBm,12% HSPA+, ASU:3) signal strength unless I touch phone (Then it drops).
WITHOUT CASE ---> 10 tests on same spot without touching phone with phone face up, SIGNAL STREGTH WAS (-107dBm,11-12% HSPA+, ASU:3).
WITH CASE ------> 10 tests on same spot without touching phone with phone face up, SIGNAL STREGTH WAS (-113dBm to -111dBm, 4-8% HSPA+, ASU:1-2)
*******WITH CASE ON my phone never crossed 8% or -111dBm signal strength. In addition, (Most of the time) it actually dropped out of HSPA+ network, and were stuck in to EDGE/2G network mode.*******
I also ran Network Speed tests using (Speed Test App) with and without case under same environment.
WITHOUT CASE ---> Find Server (10/10 times) within 10 Seconds Every time & Avg. Download Speed was 450kbps +/-50kbps. Avg. Upload Speed 200kbps+/-30kbps.Ping 400-1600.
WITH Case ------> Often Fail to Find Server (5/10) & Often Came with Error after 2 minutes (Cannot find server). It did find server 3/10 times, but in the middle of test signal dropped out, and I ended up having an error(Network Communication Error). However 2/10 it did finish test (After 1+ minutes to find Server) with Download Speed 89 & 120 kbps, Upload Speed 32 & 41 kbps. IT DIDN'T EVEN FINISH NETWORK TEST ON 2G/EDGE NETWORK.
CASE it self have very nice finish and looks really nice, soft touch finish also gives nice grip. My conclusion is don't waste your money, I will be returning my case. INSTEAD OF HELPING WITH SIGNAL, I ACTUALLY INTERFERE WITH SIGNAL, IT TAKES LOT LONGER TO FIND SIGNAL, and SIGNAL STRENGTH IS NOT AS GOOD AS PLAIN PHONE ALONE. IT KEEPS DROPPING OUT FROM HSPA+, and into 2G Network mode. In addition, in my 7 days of usage, I have not see any battery improvement made by case.
I HAVE NOT TESTED PONG CASE ON VERIZON OR SPRING NETWORK. SINCE ATT and TMOBILE HAVE SAME NETWORK, YOU SHOULD EXPECT SIMILAR RESULTS. THANK YOU. I WILL TEST THIS CASE FOR 1 MORE WEEK, AND IF I DON'T SEE ANY OTHER DIFFERENCE OR IMPROVEMENT OR DIFFICULTIES I WILL UPDATE MY REVIEW.

Definitely not. Yes they are both GSM, but completely different networks and signal strengths would definitely vary.
And oh, what's with the uppercase?
I'm having issues with my GNex on 5GHz networks. The networks drop out and are generally unstable. It is not the networks themselves that are unstable, as the signal is rock stable on nearby laptops.
The blue line is the 5GHz network. It is the only 5GHz network within range, so interference is unlikely to be the issue. This router is a WNDR4000, which is pretty much rock solid on both frequencies. The 5GHz network is on channel 48, no automatic channel setup.

Anyone know what might be the issue? Is 5Ghz working fine for others? Is my HW broken?
(I'll be pretty pissed if my HW is broken TBH. I got it back from its third service today...)
There is a hardware issue with 5GHz WiFi on the Galaxy Nexus. I can only connect to 5GHz WiFi networks if I am standing directly next to the router. There is a thread regarding this issue.
Mine is brand new and it does it.

Welcome to the Galaxy Nexus. Just pretend it never had 5ghz support, you'll be far happier for it. My 5ghz up and stopped working entirely when the phone was only a month or so old. 2.4 is still going strong, although at lower speeds then any other device connected to it. Samsung put a real joke of a wifi chip in this phone.
reading the title i thought sum1 used liquid nitrogen and overclocked our cortex A-9 to 5 Ghz dam m disappointed
My Nexus must be defective. I'm hooked to a 5Ghz network without issues.
Did you pay attention during Physics class?
Higher frequencies will not penetrate things like walls or yourself as good as lower frequencies, think 800MHz and 2.4GHz WiFi, the cell tower obviously can penetrate buildings better. Just you turning away from the router can make the bars drop a bar or 2.

Yes, I did. Did you pay attention to what I wrote? Using my laptop in the same location, I get >20MB/s speeds on 5GHz without a hitch and the signal is rock steady.
We're talking line of sight, 3-4 meters of air. Not really something that 5GHz should have trouble penetrating.

Then disregard what i said, i'm just trying to say that just turning your body can make your signal drop.
And you can't compare a "high powered" card in your laptop to the one in your phone..

Well, actually I can. Monitoring the signal on my laptop shows a rock solid signal. Pretty much anywhere in the house actually.
So the signal in itself is good and stable. Now, I expect the reception to be somewhat worse on the GNex due to antenna limitations and space restrictions for the tranciever. However, I can still expect a signal that doesn't go completely dead for 5-20 seconds at a time while being in the same room as the router. My One X does not have these dropouts, I only experience these with the GNex.
I don't expect even half the speed or reception compared to my laptop, but I expect the signal to be somewhat stable on the GNex when there are no issues on the laptop.

Comparing the gnex to the one x is fine, but to a laptop is a big no no. Laptops have more power to the wlan card, not to mention it have more antenna than the gnex. If it works fine on the one x, then yes, the gnex have problems.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?

The laptop is my "baseline", verifying that the signal is on and stable 100% percent of the time. The amount of power is of little importance, since we're only talking recieving, not transmitting. The signal won't be as good as the laptop due to the antennas (as I already pointed out. Did you read what I wrote?), but I should be able to compare the stability of the signal. And it's definitely not good.

Is anyone else using a dual band router? Which one?
I got a Netgear WNDR3700 a couple of years ago and the 5ghz band is super weak. Through one wall about 10 feet from the router I'm only getting 3 bars. At 20 feet and no walls I get 2 bars.
Any ideas or tips? I'm kind of bummed I shelled out the cash for a dual band router when it doesn't really seem very useful. Unless our phones can run simultaneous connections?

This doesn't surprise me. A 5ghz signal will have a shorter range than 2.4ghz, and will have a harder time going through walls and other objects. The only real advantage to a 5ghz signal is that less electronic equipment uses this frequency, so there will be less network interference.

I'm just surprised by how short the range is. It seems like it'd only be useful within the same room but at that point why not just use gigabit for file transfers and stuff?
For our phones the highest linkspeed on 2.4ghz I've seen is 65mpbs and on 5ghz 150mbps. On my PC I'm getting 300mbps/300mbps. It's a little disappointing that the radio inside the phone isn't a higher standard but it works fine for me. If you wanted to do a lot of file transfers or streaming DLNA, all share, WiFi connect, w.e else we have access to it'd be nice to see those higher speeds.
I'm getting another single band router on Monday so I'll see what kinds of speeds that gives me. At the very least I can use it to get WiFi in my laundry room.
Do you guys think 5ghz is just a fad? Or is it only useful in things that have a stronger antenna? Like my PC that has an external adapter.

Honestly, i have experienced poor wifi on my device irregardless, im getting a warranty replacement sometime this week, i will def check the differences side by side, if they are different, i will let you know. If they are the same, then our devices WiFi just sucks. lol
I have the same exact router with the same problem. In my bedroom I get about 3 bars of 2.4 signal, where I get 0-1 with 5 signal. As stated above this is normal, but FYI, our routers are known to have pretty crappy 5ghz signal.
This is weird too. I'm about 15 feet away with 2 walls between me and the router and I'm getting 4 bars. In my kitchen 15 feet away with no walls I get 3... This is on 2.4ghz on the new Linksys router. Maybe cuz I was next to the microwave? It was OFF though..
Just microwaved something... No effect.
I hate technology though.

I got the WNR4000 and it works pretty good but I put DD-WRT on it and boosted the signal a little bit, not sure if it really helped but i get the 5Ghz range in the whole house and 2.4 the front and backyard. I used my old router as a repeater to reach the waaaay backyard. Ours is 1 acre longways lol. So i got good coverage just with the WNR4000 alone actually.
I did a couple searches on the official search and on google and found nothing so if this is a repost my apologies.
I have a verizon galaxy nexus, that randomly has been giving a real issue with it's wifi. Not sure how it came to be. I flashed a new rom and kernel and latest radios one day and noticed it dipped. I can be on top of the router and only show 2 MAYBE! 3 bars. Once I walk about 20 feet away I have 0-1... so I went ahead and recovered my old rom and settings via nandroid. No difference. I went back and reflashed using twrp, my old radios as well. Still no difference. Now just today after dealing with this for about 2 weeks I went ahead and fastboot flashed my phone back to stock and everything... low and behold... no difference. So I have come to the conclusion it could be hardware related. I opened my phone up and I have been taking guesses as to which antenna is actually the wifi one as I can't seemed to find any identifying marks and all the tear downs I find are for GSM models. But while I was in there, i made sure the pogo points were making contact, I cleaned all the components with electronics cleaner and everything. No difference for worse or better frankly. So replacing the antenna I guess is the only idea I have left to see but I don't wanna buy a whole broken phone for several 100 bucks.
Thanks

I can't help with the location of the antenna, but have you tried other routers? I know some of these phones can have trouble with some. Mine in particular has a very hard time staying connected on the 5ghz band on my home router even when I'm two feet away. After forcing it to the 2ghz band, it worked fine. Might want to try a different router, or even find a free hotspot somwhere, to test on another one before attempting to replace the antenna.

Sadly, it's all routers. My house one if I sit on my bad barely receives signal from the router half way on the other side of the room. Meanwhile my laptop can pick up the signal halfway into my backyard. Worked fine before the symptoms began.
Work routers, we have 2. One is a private network for our printers, I sit approximately 15 feet away from it and have about 2 bars. My other one from the main network does not even appear anymore. It is about 20-30 feet away thru 2 walls. Prior to the issue popping up, I had full bars for the one and about 2-3 for the other.
Changing settings on my home router does nothing sadly.

and have you used an app like WiFi Analyzer to see what the signal looks like just to make sure that it isn't a cosmetic issue with the signal bars?

the one router it picks up at work is sitting around -80-90 dbm when I am at my desk.
Between -70-80 when I told it up the antenna. The 2nd router remains unviewable.

interesting... mine shows -44 sitting across the office from my router; -4 to -8 if I hold it right over the router so yeah, I'd agree that you defintely have something going on.
pardon my lack of re-reading the entire thread but have you reloaded your radios? remember that a Nandroid backup and flashing a ROM and that kind of thing doesn't necessarily update/replace radios.
maybe getting a copy of the appropriate version of radios from here on XDA and then manually flashing those?
Hi. I'm having the exact same issue. Did you solve it? Thanks.
