OK I have Verizon Galaxy Nexus and for some strange reason. My NFC is entirely disabled. I am running full stock rom, locked bootloader.
I had the Google Wallet app installed when they first opened it. I used it mostly for the loyalty cards function but I decided today to try the NFC. Well I opened the program and it started saying the NFC was disabled. I never disabled it because I use it for other things (Mostly for my GPS in my car. I have a tag that enables the GPS and opens a Car Home app that i have automatically.) Going to the settings it shows the NFC option with the checkmark. but it's greyed out. I can't re-enable it.
So I figure I might've burned out the antenna on the battery. Nope. Switching the batteries to a spare that I have yield's a similar result. Namely that I can attempt to check the checkbox. But if I do it just grey's out and won't check the box.
What the heck is going on!?
do you have the official samsung batteries?
Absolutely. I don't use off branded batteries. I've had problems with them in the past with thrid party batteries on other phones.
So yes. I have 2 Samsung official batteries. I primarily use the Extended battery in my phone. I do have a standard battery which is the spare that I alluded to about testing to make sure the NFC antenna from the Extended wasn't shot.
Here's a screen shot of what the option looks like for those of you wondering.
It looks like this when I start the phone. But when I try to go through settings from the wallet app. It shows up clickable, but when I check it. It just sits there and does nothing. I've even set it to try to use it while the phone is prevented from sleeping for 35 minutes. Nothing happened!
Something is screwed up there. I have a non-NFC compatible battery but I can check or uncheck the box. Might have to do a factory reset.

When testing nfc my phone must actually touch my credit card to register the tag.
Even then it sometimes will take a few seconds or require me to move up and down the card to register.
Is this normal or is my antenna weak? Been having trouble at stores with using Google wallet lately also.

Even with a fairly thick case on my phone, Google wallet works for me on the first try every time, but I always touch the pay pass pad with my phone. I use it daily at gas pumps and vending machines at my college and I switch out between 5 different cases on a daily basis.
Do you have another battery you can try? I've never tested my standard battery. I use the extended with my VZ CDMA Nexus.
I'm using extended GSM battery (OEM). It was about the same on the standard battery.

It is not normal. My first gnex had this issue. My second does not. You still have to touch, but not find the 'sweet spot'.
It isn't the antenna in the battery either. I tried switching batteries with the same issue.
I have a 3500mAh extended battery that I bought off Amazon. I forgot the brand name lol but I don't think it matters. Problem is that my NFC chip has stopped working with this battery. I tried using Google wallet at a vending machine that it always used to work, and now it just sits there and shows the wave graphic as it's loading, and never competes the connection.
I'm not sure if I damaged the antenna somehow or if it's possible that the antenna is now dead, because it used to work a couple of days ago and now, nothing. I haven't tried using android beam with another phone yet, or testing it with the stock battery as I'm not home (I'll try those later) but any thoughts are welcome.

does the battery say it has NFC? if not, it will never work
the antenna is in the batteries and without that, NFC will never work.

Funny, mine started doing that after the latest update. It took the .53 left on my google card ok, but I can't get it to charge any of my cards. And I thought it was just me but maybe not.

I'm pretty sure the battery has NFC. The amazon listing said it did, and it was actually working until a couple days ago (probably the latest update)

Just tested it with my girlfriends GSII, and I can easily send links, youtube videos, maps etc through NFC/Android beam both from my phone and to my phone. So my guess is it's Google Wallet.

Hi there,
I have been a lurker on the forums for a long time but am posting for the first time today. I know this belongs in the developer forums but being a new user, I'm not allowed to post there.
I'm having an issue with my NFC option being greyed out in my settings after having intsalled AK Pirates kernel and Paranoid Android Feb20 Beta release. This has been destroying my battery life so all I want to do is disable it but I cannot because it's greyed out. I've searched all that I can but to no avail and I was wondering if anyone can help.
Thanks!
Are you using a cheap aftermarket battery? The NFC antenna connects to the battery, which is why certain batteries are labeled NFC-Enabled. Try another battery and see if that resolves the issue(s).

Nope. I'm using the original Samsung battery that came with the device. It says Near Field Communication on it.
Try opening Google Wallet first, and then go back to NFC settings to turn it off. Also, try removing the battery and checking the contact pins to make sure none are bent/clogged with dirt.

I don't have Google Wallet on my device. It's really strange why this is such an isolated issue to me

Has there been any word on that rumored wireless charger for the GSIII from Samsung?
Are there any worthy 3rd party wireless chargers?
No. Samsung pretty much keeps pushing it off from what I heard. Buttttttt, I think some Chinese or Japanese group made a modified back cover for the S3 so it's compatible with a wireless charge station. The group sells them on ebay I believe. You'd have to go find it and what not I don't know price or anything like that
Edit: there seems to be a bunch on ebay that are receivers which you take off the back, and attach it in, put the cover back on, and then apparently your good to go. I don't see any specific group who made them but there's several all around $20-30. There was a post around here on the same thing.

Bought one for the verizon variant and modded his phone slightly to make it work, didnt sound like it was a full teardown process or very difficult either
There's a lot more simple ones than that.. they attach inside the battery cover (the back of the phone you pop off to access the sd card, and battery).
Pretty much if you take off the back and look on the left side by the battery is 2 little copper looking squares or w/e, thats for a wireless charging receiver.

All you gotta do with that, is take off your stock battery cover, and put that one on, and then set it on a dock. Due to it somewhat covering part of the back of the phone, (not visually from the outside), it may interfere with NFC/S beam. Im not sure about that though.

Here you go. Great option for me cuz the wife used to have a Palm Pre.
Without some way to suppress alert tone, wireless charging is a bust

The NFC antenna is in the battery, so the wireless charging solutions that involve covering the battery (like the one you linked to on eBay) definitely will prevent you from using NFC.
I took the Verizon OEM wireless back (available on eBay) which has the second NFC antenna below the battery (i.e. NFC still works) and did a 10 minute mod so that my Sprint phone would accept it. I'm still a noob, so I can post links, but Google for "How to EASILY Add Inductive/Wireless Charging to your Sprint Phone Using Verizon Cover & Keeping NFC" and is the first link
A few months back, NFC stopped working on my Note II. I have programmed a number of NFC tags in the past and used them on a daily basis. There's an NFC tag on my car phone mount that automatically starts up Car Home Ultra, turns on Bluetooth, turns off WiFi, etc. Just suddenly stopped working. NFC is, of course, enabled in the settings.
At the time, I was running a stock 4.3 MK4 ROM, rooted. I've since used CM11 and just a few days ago installed Community ROM 3.2+ (4.4.2, NE2 modem). Neither of them worked, which leads me to believe it's a hardware, not software, problem. It's my understanding that the NFC chip on this device is embedded in the battery cover, and is connected via the two round copper conductors. I've ensured that they are clean, etc., still no joy.
Can anyone offer any words of wisdom?

Well if it is not working on any rom then it is most likely a hardware issue. The chip is in the back cover. If you know anyone who has a N2 maybe they will let you try using their back to test. If it turns out to be the nfc chip then it is not very expensive to replace.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I DO know someone that's near the Jersey Village area of Houston, and I owe that gentleman a few beers (hint, hint).
I found this on eBay. Judging from the 3M logo I see in the second photo, I would assume that the NFC antenna is simply held onto the back cover with adhesive. So replacing it is simply heat, pry, peel, and stick? I'd pay $4.29 to try it out. I'm nearly certain that's my problem.
I will be back Tuesday and available Wednesday.
