For a couple of days now, I've been having problems with the forums. When I log in, the "You last visited:" seems to be out of date, and consequently (I'm guessing) the list of bold threads with the "Go to first new post" icon is very long. If I log out and back in, then the last visited date and time seems to update, but it never used to be like this.
Is this a problem on my PC (I've tried deleting cookies), or is it a problem with the forum?
Cheers,
Steve.

Same happening here, posts I know I read yesterday are still coming up in bold ( unread )
Hmmm... so maybe it isn't just me then. I've tried logging in from different PCs, and it still seems a bit screwed up.
Fingers crossed for a quick solution.
Cheers,
Steve.
There was a change made to the backend that caused the problem.
The check to see which posts you have read is done by user ID instead of by cookie ID.
If you mark the entire forum read (Quick Links, Mark Forums Read), then it will work fine from then on.
Thanks
Dave
this has been driving me nuts the last few days...I'll try the check all read now!

Thanks Dave - that seems to work great.

I think I spoke too soon...
Am I missing something. I'm sure it used to be that when I visited a forum, the threads that had been updated since I last visited were highlighted (well, emboldened).
Now it appears that it's every thread that I haven't read, or explicitly set as read, gets highlighted.
I prefer the previous behaviour - is that an option I can set?
Cheers,
Steve.

I think with the old behaviour the unread posts "timed" after a while and marked all posts read for you (probably when the cookie expired). With this new one I don't think it forget's what you have and haven't read or has been updated (ever).
I used to use "Mark forums read" with the old system when I had read all I wanted to just to get a clean start, I do the same with the new one - no real difference for me
Thanks
Dave
Same as Steve with me, it used to flag all old posts as read when i logged out and logged back in later in the day, now its only flagging as read those that i specifically read. Looks like I am going to have to get used to the "Mark all Read" function. Oh well, that's progress.
Must admit - I think it's a backward step. Can I have the old behaviour back please?
Cheers,
Steve.

I actually disagree, I very much enjoy the fact that a lot of threads aren't getting marked as read when i have't read them.
Oh and i just thought it was just me it's starting to do my bonce in bigtime, thank god i found this thread as otherwise Dave you would have just had a PM

It seems that there's a few things we aren't going to agree on.
I can understand that if you are going to go through culling threads to put into one large Q&A thread, then being able to break that up into multiple sessions is going to be a benefit. However, for me, if there's a thread that I haven't visited during a visit, then it's for a reason (probably to ensure I don't offer any contribution to it?) and will most likely be due to the title indicating it's not of specific interest to me, although that won't be of concern soon, as I'll only have to look at one thread.
Cheers,
Steve.

Yes, I browse virtually every day the Kaiser general, Kaiser Rom, Kaiser Software, Diamond Software, Diamond Roms, Raphael, Raphael software, Raphael Rom, Development & Hacking, About XDA-Developers, & General Sections. So you could see how for some of us merely cleaning up just the 25 random question threads started every day wouldn't alleviate that problem.

I agree. I'd like the old timed behavior back.
Hi all,
So here lately, my "vies first un read button has not been working, forst on Energy's rom thread and now on Dutty's rom thread.
It actually has not been working on Energy for some time, it will just take me to the very last post and not the post where I last left off.
Then as I had started to get more and more involved on Dutty's rom thread, (it is much smaller), it was working fine and now that one too just takes me to the last post when I hit the view last read button, maybe it is a size of thread thing, I dont know but I have also tried both the XDA classic and the new 2010 page view selector.
Is anyone having this issue? It is on multiple computers that this occurs, both at home and at work.
Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, they both do currently have a poll, and I can remember for sure if this was happening with Energy before the poll or not. I will hunt around for another long thread that does not have a poll to see if it works there too.
THanks,
Jeff

I'm also experiencing the problem on the TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 thread which also has a poll. Clicking on "View first unread" always beams me to the last post.
What actually works for me is the Xda Premium Android app. It correctly shows the first unread post on the very thread where the website always directs me to the last one.
Is there any solution available yet to get this working using the website?
I'm getting this as well on the following forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291
I'm having this issue as well. Anyone know a way around it?
I am getting this problem too in this topic and it also has a poll.
Sorry to kick this, but "View First Unread" doesn't seem to be working for me on any thread I previously visited. It just takes me to the last page all the time.
I was working fine until a few days ago...
What can I do? Clean cookies maybe?

+1 to that.
I have no idea how this "view first unread" is working..or is supposed work.some1 care to explain?
It's works perfectly in the app and that is how one wants it here too.
Also wish it was the default view instead of 'Last Page'

It works fine for me in Chrome, and always did in Firefox. What browser are you using? Have you changed your view (under Display Mode)?

ok, it's working fine today.
thanks
I'm having problems with View First Unread on numerous threads on XDA, and I can tell you what the problem is: it's threads where moderators have deleted posts.
There seems to be an error in the forum code, where the indices of unread posts are adjusted incorrectly for a given thread. The more posts deleted from a thread, the further off the unread count goes (and it can be off by multiple pages).
What's weird is that it isn't what you'd expect -- you don't get shown a post later than that you last saw as "first unread". It actually rolls backwards. If a mod deletes ten posts from a given thread, I will then see the last ten posts I'd already read being marked as unread. If they delete 40 posts, my unread count will be off by 40 posts (and I'll have to skip forward four pages from the supposed "last unread" to get to a post I've not seen before.)
And once the unread count is off, it stays off, only changing if a moderator deletes more posts. If ten posts are deleted, and then the thread is never moderated again, I could come back in six months after hundreds more posts have been made by others and I've read them, and my "last unread" will still be off by a page.
It's a frustrating bug, because the threads where you most need the "last unread" feature are the ones that are tens or hundreds of pages long -- but those are also the threads where tens of posts have been deleted, and so every time you go to last unread you'll have to then manually skip forward one or more pages to get to the first post you've not seen a dozen times or more.
XDA the wonderful forum it is, but it has gone too big. Not that i'm complaining, but you're post seems to be lost many times because 100 other people posted after you especially in hot threads or ROM releases. So if you quoted someone or someone quotes you many times you skip it, or have to do a painful searches spanning 10's of pages...
Slickdeals.net (another big forum like XDA) has a wonderful system, that whenever someone quotes you're post you get a pop-up next time you log in with a link which takes you straight to the reply. I was wondering if such a system is possible here also?
Regards
BUMP
This feature would be really nice to have!
I like to idea, but I think it depends on the forum system. As I remember XDA uses vBulettin, you should check if it's possible to do this and if so you could ask one of the admins to set it. So to answer your question it's possible, but the admins won't change the source of the forum to do this.

I like this idea too. It might be too resource-intensive (we never want to add a feature that slows down the site). I'll ping our server admin to see if this would be possible.
I am really missing this type of feature!
Specifically, I know many other vBulletin forums that have a /whoquotedme.php page - it shows a list of the latest posts in which you were quoted. It greatly helps in discovering who's trying to communicate with you, answer a question you might've had, or ask one of you [without specifically sending a pm].
I believe something like http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=255285
I think it checks every post to see if there is a user id present when there is a quote in the post, and then associates a link to that post with the user who was quoted.
I haven't specifically heard of it being a resource hog, but then again I am not a vBulletin admin

Yes, it was determined to be very resource intensive, for a site with 4 million users, as every post would have to be checked as it was made, to see if it mentioned someone...

That would be cool, but I'd be happy if notifications worked at all. Mine quit working two updates ago and haven't worked since.

Are you referring to notifications to new replies on subscribed threads or new PMs? Those are definitely working. If your having an issue with that, we can certainly help you get to the bottom of why your not receiving yours.
When I want to go back to recent conversations I was involved in I use the "Find all posts by" link.
Click on your user name at the top right, select Statistics and there's the link - "Find all posts by your username". I've bookmarked this for easy access.
That way, if I've taken part in a conversation then I can carry on where I left off. If I don't want to see what people responded with then I obviously don't care, and that's up to me to choose. It's the easiest way to keep track of what you were involved in.

Hmmm. Well I just upgraded to a new phone yesterday so let me see if they work on the new one or not. I didn't turn them on assuming it was broken. I had an Eris and a lot of Eris users were complaining that the notifications had quit. I'll let you know.
Thanks
My notifications definitely are not working. I wiped all app caches, uninstalled the xda app, wiped data/dalvik cache and cache/dalvik cache and rebooted twice. I then reinstalled xda app, logged in and set preferences. Still no notifications and I have no idea why. Email and text messages work.

If you think of it like that way, it is...
However at slickdeals I think its implemented like whenever someone quote's, a notification is being sent to the ID whose post was quoted...that notification later pops up at bottom when that user logs on, similar to PM dialog which pops, you don't make an actual search in the post that if mentioned someone, so not that resource intensive I feel

Sounds like there might be some problems in the Galaxy Nexus forums as they work fine elsewhere. Another similar issue to your first has already been reported. It might be worth mentioning these in the requests from users to mods & admins thread...

Not its not that, try this as an example. Searcha ROM thread for somerthing, "battery drain". Pick one of the thread replies and click on it. It used to take you to the exact place in the thread where it was so you could then view the subsequent replies, now it doesnt even take you to the right page so looking for anwers to questions is much more difficult.
