For a couple of days now, I've been having problems with the forums. When I log in, the "You last visited:" seems to be out of date, and consequently (I'm guessing) the list of bold threads with the "Go to first new post" icon is very long. If I log out and back in, then the last visited date and time seems to update, but it never used to be like this.
Is this a problem on my PC (I've tried deleting cookies), or is it a problem with the forum?
Cheers,
Steve.

Same happening here, posts I know I read yesterday are still coming up in bold ( unread )
Hmmm... so maybe it isn't just me then. I've tried logging in from different PCs, and it still seems a bit screwed up.
Fingers crossed for a quick solution.
Cheers,
Steve.
There was a change made to the backend that caused the problem.
The check to see which posts you have read is done by user ID instead of by cookie ID.
If you mark the entire forum read (Quick Links, Mark Forums Read), then it will work fine from then on.
Thanks
Dave
this has been driving me nuts the last few days...I'll try the check all read now!

I think I spoke too soon...
Am I missing something. I'm sure it used to be that when I visited a forum, the threads that had been updated since I last visited were highlighted (well, emboldened).
Now it appears that it's every thread that I haven't read, or explicitly set as read, gets highlighted.
I prefer the previous behaviour - is that an option I can set?
Cheers,
Steve.

I think with the old behaviour the unread posts "timed" after a while and marked all posts read for you (probably when the cookie expired). With this new one I don't think it forget's what you have and haven't read or has been updated (ever).
I used to use "Mark forums read" with the old system when I had read all I wanted to just to get a clean start, I do the same with the new one - no real difference for me
Thanks
Dave
Same as Steve with me, it used to flag all old posts as read when i logged out and logged back in later in the day, now its only flagging as read those that i specifically read. Looks like I am going to have to get used to the "Mark all Read" function. Oh well, that's progress.
Must admit - I think it's a backward step. Can I have the old behaviour back please?
Cheers,
Steve.

I actually disagree, I very much enjoy the fact that a lot of threads aren't getting marked as read when i have't read them.

It seems that there's a few things we aren't going to agree on.
I can understand that if you are going to go through culling threads to put into one large Q&A thread, then being able to break that up into multiple sessions is going to be a benefit. However, for me, if there's a thread that I haven't visited during a visit, then it's for a reason (probably to ensure I don't offer any contribution to it?) and will most likely be due to the title indicating it's not of specific interest to me, although that won't be of concern soon, as I'll only have to look at one thread.
Cheers,
Steve.

Yes, I browse virtually every day the Kaiser general, Kaiser Rom, Kaiser Software, Diamond Software, Diamond Roms, Raphael, Raphael software, Raphael Rom, Development & Hacking, About XDA-Developers, & General Sections. So you could see how for some of us merely cleaning up just the 25 random question threads started every day wouldn't alleviate that problem.

Don't want to clog up the original thread. I am thinking of upgrading to Black Shadow but I have a hard time finding information on which applications there might be issues with. In the sbsh forum for example, one user says that on Black v3 installing Ilauncher caused a hard reset.
Does Ilauncher work with v4?
Also I just can't go without phoneAlarm, IM+, Fizz weather, SPB Time, Resco Explorer, Resco Photoviewer, Pocket Informant and PIEPlus.
Just list all programs that work and the ones you are having problems with.
So far so good...
Greetings,
I've been running these for about a week with no problems on the Black Shadow ROM.
Spb Time v2.1.4, Build 947
&
Resco Explorer 2007 v6.00
I'm curious to know if iLauncher works...I have it...just haven't loaded it.
Cheers,
I,ve been running Ilauncher couple of days without any problems. I also have SPB Mobile Shell, Time and Weather installed and those are working fine.
...And Ilauncher is version 3.0.04

Mostly because I heard of Black shadow today and know nothing about it. Second, there are a whole bunch of posts about black shadow on this forum so I did not think any of it...

Yeah, well you didn't scroll by. You opened the thread, read it and posted a message far less valuable than my thread. If this post is of no interest to you then don't read it. 99% of all threads are of no interest to me. I use this forum for the remaining 1% of (to me) interesting threads.
And if I can't post in the original thread, and not post a new one, I don't have many options left... People like you are clogging up the forum.
I'd like to write something rude as well as you did, but instead I figured I would write something constructive.
Mortplayer
anyone using mortplayer on Shadow? It works fine but i'm unable to quit the program properly, instead I have to force close it with task manager every time which leads to previous setting not saved correctly.

Can we stop this petty crap please? Lots of people on these fora are still using the Black ROMs, JJ still posts on here about them...what exactly is the big f***ing deal?
Telling people to go elsewhere to talk about a different ROM is just going to lead to fragmentation of the community and is just trying to create tension between two internet sites out of nothing.
Just grow up a little bit and stop trying to stir it.

The cook himself has requested that all discussion take place on 4wm. So, the big f***ing deal is that *****ing about it here, when the cook has said he'll only support it on 4wm is useless. Also, if he doesn't see the *****es (because they're posted here), how can he fix the issues?
This community is being fragmented by more than JJ... The excellent moderation around here certainly doesn't help either.

Come on Elf - that's like saying if you have a problem with wisbar, you should only post on the lakeridge forums or if you have a problem with SPB Pocket Plus, you should only post on their forums.
The fact of the matter is that nearly everyone who is interested in the Black ROMs on 4WM is reading and posting here, including JJ himself.
But not everyone who is running black can be mithered reading another set of forums and stays here. I think here is where you're likely to get the biggest readership. You'll miss some of the guys on 4WM but most of the big hitters (just like yourself ) are here.
Let them post in peace

Hi there,
I've just signed up so that I could reformat http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream_Boot_Image , but I can't seem to login to the wiki.
I've tried with Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4, both show the board software indicating a successful login, before redirecting back to the wiki where the login box is still present and "you need to login to edit.."
I tried clearing cookies for wiki.xda-developers.com, but it didn't help.
I am not sure, but probably you need to have a certain amount of Posts before you can update the wiki
Hmm, is there perhaps some way I can get around this? Really every question I have has probably been answered 100 times over, and asking them again just to generate credit seems a bit silly. The only thing I can help contribute to is organizing the existing information..
"To be able to create or edit pages, you need to be registered as a user at xda-developers.com. If you are not registered as a user then go to http://forum.xda-developers.com and click 'register' in the menu on the top of the page. Once you're logged in to the forum, you will automatically also be logged in here. If you have an xda-developers account but aren't logged in, simply click the 'sign in' link on the bottom of this page."
You should ask the admin in this concern.
Thanks corepda, Addicted2xda.
I'll see about finding an admin to ask. There is no 'sign in' link, only the standard phpWiki login box, which seems to be wired to the forum login script. However simply clicking the login button gives me a login failure (as per the paragraph you quoted), and entering my username+pw logs me in at the forum but not at the wiki..

1. This issue seems to have nothing to do with being a new member or not, my test account has the same issue and that's been here just as long as I have been.
2. Wiki vandalism has nothing to do with being a new member, a new member can just as well have useful info to share.
3. FTP downtime? what has that got to do with it? The last ftp downtime I could remember had nothing to do with new members but with us not scanning for viruses.

Hi everybody,
I wonder why a thread of mine was closed in one of the forums and I really have no idea what I did wrong and even who to ask what and why? (The thread is in the ROM development section of the Topaz forum, concerning cooked ROMs that support handwriting).
Are there seperate admins for each sub-forum and if yes, how can I find them? Or who else can I ask?
thanks & cheers

More than likely it was closed because it has nothing to do with rom development. The rom development forum is not the place to ask for specific roms or features. It should have been asked in the general forum.
The Mod should have given you the courtesy of moving it for you or at the very least a short explanation. I have from day one, had a problem with the quick unexplained trigger finger of many mods on this forum. A little common courtesy would be nice.
@denco7:
Agreed. Going to "chalk" it up to an honest mistake made by the moderator who closed it (not me).

As far as the searching, once you are in a thread that you think may have some relevant information for you, you will see a button that reads "Search This Thread". Simply put in your search parameters and choose to get "posts" for results. This will make it a lot simpler than going through 2000+ posts.
As far as the transcriber, there are cabs out there since lots of Chefs actually leave this option out due to lack of space in the rom. Let me know if you need help finding the cab.

I understand how incredibly difficult it is to maintain a forum of this size and activity (I was once a Diablo2 Battlenet Mod ) and I appreciate the work you all put in there. I probably wouldnt have made this thread if it was my 400th post... after a while you get a feeling for where what goes and also for the search cloud and how to find stuff. But imagine if a newbie comes in here and wants to find out if his new Topaz is an ARM or a SH3 because he/she wants to download the Total Commander Beta... (ok, well maybe this is not the forum for people who dont know what hardware they are using)

Understood. But with threads this big, lets assume that somebody asks in Dutty's ROM thread if it supports handwriting on page 100 something. You cant be 100% sure that if the question was answered it contains the word "handwriting" again. So you do have to read to the nect 150 pages to see if somebody actually answered the question (Nobody did, I should know)

XDA the wonderful forum it is, but it has gone too big. Not that i'm complaining, but you're post seems to be lost many times because 100 other people posted after you especially in hot threads or ROM releases. So if you quoted someone or someone quotes you many times you skip it, or have to do a painful searches spanning 10's of pages...
Slickdeals.net (another big forum like XDA) has a wonderful system, that whenever someone quotes you're post you get a pop-up next time you log in with a link which takes you straight to the reply. I was wondering if such a system is possible here also?
Regards
BUMP
This feature would be really nice to have!
I like to idea, but I think it depends on the forum system. As I remember XDA uses vBulettin, you should check if it's possible to do this and if so you could ask one of the admins to set it. So to answer your question it's possible, but the admins won't change the source of the forum to do this.
Sent from my GT-I5700 using XDA Premium App
I like this idea too. It might be too resource-intensive (we never want to add a feature that slows down the site). I'll ping our server admin to see if this would be possible.
I am really missing this type of feature!
Specifically, I know many other vBulletin forums that have a /whoquotedme.php page - it shows a list of the latest posts in which you were quoted. It greatly helps in discovering who's trying to communicate with you, answer a question you might've had, or ask one of you [without specifically sending a pm].
I believe something like http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=255285
I think it checks every post to see if there is a user id present when there is a quote in the post, and then associates a link to that post with the user who was quoted.
I haven't specifically heard of it being a resource hog, but then again I am not a vBulletin admin

I think it checks every post to see if there is a user id present when there is a quote in the post, and then associates a link to that post with the user who was quoted.
I haven't specifically heard of it being a resource hog, but then again I am not a vBulletin admin

I know of a similar addon for the correct version of vBulletin that does something like this...

Discussed it with other mods, but we don't think it is needed at this time.

Wow really, is it because is it too resource intensive? Slickdeals, is also hosted on vBulletin platform..
Sorry for the late reply and digging this thread up but ironically, I forgot to keep track of this thread

Yes, it was determined to be very resource intensive, for a site with 4 million users, as every post would have to be checked as it was made, to see if it mentioned someone...

how about allowing users to jump to their last posts in a thread?
having to search for your own post in a thread, especially a popular ROM thread for example, is a very annoying...

Agree, nice idea. coul be also nice to have a better implementation of the actual search in a topic... Right now it is a bit confusing
That would be cool, but I'd be happy if notifications worked at all. Mine quit working two updates ago and haven't worked since.

Are you referring to notifications to new replies on subscribed threads or new PMs? Those are definitely working. If your having an issue with that, we can certainly help you get to the bottom of why your not receiving yours.
When I want to go back to recent conversations I was involved in I use the "Find all posts by" link.
Click on your user name at the top right, select Statistics and there's the link - "Find all posts by your username". I've bookmarked this for easy access.
That way, if I've taken part in a conversation then I can carry on where I left off. If I don't want to see what people responded with then I obviously don't care, and that's up to me to choose. It's the easiest way to keep track of what you were involved in.

Hmmm. Well I just upgraded to a new phone yesterday so let me see if they work on the new one or not. I didn't turn them on assuming it was broken. I had an Eris and a lot of Eris users were complaining that the notifications had quit. I'll let you know.
Thanks
My notifications definitely are not working. I wiped all app caches, uninstalled the xda app, wiped data/dalvik cache and cache/dalvik cache and rebooted twice. I then reinstalled xda app, logged in and set preferences. Still no notifications and I have no idea why. Email and text messages work.

all very good suggestions!
I hope they find a way to realize that.

If you think of it like that way, it is...
However at slickdeals I think its implemented like whenever someone quote's, a notification is being sent to the ID whose post was quoted...that notification later pops up at bottom when that user logs on, similar to PM dialog which pops, you don't make an actual search in the post that if mentioned someone, so not that resource intensive I feel
Ok, awesome for the thanks feature. Thanks to that.
But, if we could also get a feature on the other end of that stick, that would be really great I think. A dislike, or thumbs down on posts that are just useless to the topic, then be able to set in your USERCP, any posts with -3 or more get auto minimized (clicking a + would open the post).
It seems more now a days than back in the day, there are more 'noob's on this site than ever. And they just cant seem to read. Or care to read. Or know how to read, the english language. So, they spam DEVELOPER threads, with 'does this woK?' 'eta on xxx' 'how to install this'....when, its ALL in the OP! Constantly, do I respond back with READ THE OP! Like they should be doing. + The stickies with tons of good guides in them.
So, I know the dislike/thumbs down wouldnt resolve this problem completely. But, it would help clear a huge thread (some with 1k+ posts) down so some of us that 'arent' noobs can go in and actually see comments relating to ROM, not the installation, or partition sizes (non-rom relation).
I understand, this could be abused. I really hope it wouldnt be. But, youtube uses a similar feature, like/dislike, and still use it. I am just throwing this out there, because a great thread (HERE if curious) is being BASHED with TONS of stupid questions. And damn, its very aggravating to see people not read, and im not even the dev...
Tried not making this a rant post. Just trying to see if there is 'some' solution to this 'on-going' problem (not JUST that thread, every thread has repeat questions). And maybe if people start seeing -10 on their posts or -50, they will know they are doing something wrong. Instead of me replying, wasting space I will hit the dislike instead .
Thanks for reading.

Should be in the About XDA-Developers section, and if you had read there it's already been suggested and a beta was implemented in a GNex thread. This isn't HD2 related though so I'm reporting this thread to be moved
Oh and yes, that thread is being completely messed up by noobs.
EDIT: Lol posted this before your edit
Yeah, I understand the logistics of a forum, just wierd xda posted it in the other page I had open I guess (had hd2 forum open in seperate tab). I really dont know what happened.
Anyway
Ok so looking back 3 pages I found this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547887
I looked 2 pages, I guess shame on me for not looking further. But in anycase, it doesnt appear to be in the gnex threads anymore. So, just trying to get more support for them to bring it back I guess, hopefully in full scale. It would really help I think.
There was an experiment of this in the galaxy nexus forums... I believe it will now be improved based on what we found from that test
