screen video recording? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Is there a way to video record what your doing on the screen? I think I remember the note 2 had that but it was cancel or something that only worked on international note 2

If i recall correctly it was a patent issue that prevented the feature from appearing in an update. I dont think it ever came out. Only options are a few screencast apps on the market, but their framerates are abysmal. Maybe we'd get better mileage on the note 3 with the improved cpu/gpu combo. I think i own z-screencast, ill try it and let you know if you're interested in a 3rd party solution. The other app didn't work.

of cool ill have to check it out.. app is fine also

Sorry it took so long. I finally had a chance to really just goof off with my phone. Scr screencast works perfectly and can record at a pretty good framerate even at 1080p. I was able to record a 2D game at 40 fps with my voice over at 480p. Needs root. Pro version is about 5$.

Z screencast doesn't work without adjusting the dev options and isn't as fast or feature packed, but half the price.

So I'm thinking about picking up a galaxy note 8.0. Just wondering if anybody has run into any issues or problems with the device?

The only problem I got is that I can't leave it alone
The screen is very bright and colorful
The battery life is good
The performance is great
it charges in a few hours so you can go back to use it
In terms of experience ruining, game breaking, regret inducing, where-is-my-receipt sorta problems, nothing as of yet. I've only managed to come up with a tiny list of minor annoyances (like the position of the speakers and accidentally hitting the back button while in landscape), but nothing that's pushed me over the edge. In fact, of all the Android tablets I've owned (Xoom, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Nexus 7, Transformer TF300T), this is hands down the most useful and practical I've owned.
So how is the battery life? I.e. how long of continuous use before needing to charge?

I really like tee tablet and it is a considerable upgrade to my N7 in every way, even without considering the s-pen functionality.
But since you asked for quibbles, here are two....
In my experience, the IR blaster weak enough that to call it a "blaster"us misleading. More of an "IR crawler".
If you are a really big fan of Hulu (I've met one person), the Hulu app has a framerate stutter at the moment (but the ads are silky smooth).

After nearly a week of use I have no real quibbles. The biggest one is I hate the stock lockscreen but that... that is changed easily enough. So far the device is very responsive and snappy, has less lag with pen input than my note 10.1, and the screen while not the highest resolution by any means looks very, very nice!

How is the gaming performance of Note 8? Can you play all latest games with out any lag with good frame rates?
Also how is the battery life?
The mali400 is the only thing i'm not so happy about. (Oh, and the lack of camera flash).
I was hoping that the note 8 would be a complete upgrade in every area over my HTC Sensation.... But from what I've been able to gather - the Adreno220 in my Sensation is superior to the mali400...
I haven't been able to find any real world evidence of superior performance online though... I guess I'll just have to wait till I actually have a Note 8.0 and do the tests myself.
Would love to hear some feedback regarding the Mali 400.
My feeling is that with current software it's not really an issue. But I fear the note 8.0 / Note 2 will start showing the age of their gpu in the next couple of years.

Every game I've thrown at this thing has done just fine. I'm not sure what a good benchmark game is, but I've not noticed any issues, lag, or performance issues in any title.
In regards to battery life, I've honestly not been paying attention. It's been good enough that I've not had to think about it with extremely heavy use throughout the day.

Also Mali 400 MP is future proof? Atleast for one year more?

Here you can see default speeds of the mali 400 mine is at 640mhz on the N2
Oh! That is helpful thank you.
Have you tried putting it up to 800?
Is it me or does the note 8.0 feel warm on the back (bottom left)? I downloaded system tuner and it is reaching 50-55° C ON CPU by simply browsing the internet or just having the screen on. Also, if I put my ear close to where it feels warm I hear this hissing sound (very faint but noticeable). I dont get this same effect on my note 2. Otherwise, I love this tablet!

I have owned the xoom, Asus transformer, Nexus 7, and now the Note 8! this is by far the best in my opinion! I've only owned it for 2 days but have found more use for it than all the others! I find it actually makes things easier! The only down side is a small creak I've found in the back part of the casing next to the Micro SD card slot! By the Way, I wrote all this with the s pen and my own hand writing!

That very much sounds like your tablet is defective. Hissing is usually a failing componentof some sort. I would take that unit in for an exchange.
My note 8 is completely silent, and produces no heat that I can feel.

Does anyone else sort of feel like they are using a spec'd out froyo phone?

That lag throughout the OS. Its there and if you deny it you are just in denial because you don't want to admit got paid 600 for something that lags. The OS is also a mess in terms of UI out of the box but there are hidden ways to fix it. Took me forever to figure out how to get rid of those smart action notifications, I had switched to nova launcher but they kept showing up in my notification bar. Speaking of the notification bar reconfigured to mostly be a settings bar, if you scroll to the right at the top of the bar and click edit, you can get your notification space back.
There is lag. It's like when you swipe a long list for example, the page "stick" and you have to wait for a millisecond before swiping again. Some apps take few seconds more to open too. I rooted yesterday and customized the **** out of my phone. Removed bloatware and unwanted features. Changed the font to Roboto. Still kinda feel it is a tad slower than my Z Ultra with GPe. Makes me wonder how this G3 is going to shine with stock Android on it.

i've noticed scrolling lag in virtually every flagship i've owned. (m8, n5, note3, g2)
the only time i had zero scrolling lag was on my n5 when i was on the L preview.
outside of milliseconds of hesitation when scrolling, this phone flies.
if it doesn't you screwed it up or are a liar.
(see how ridiculous that kind of statement sounds?)
I'm not trying to start a debate here or anything I'm just saying what I am experiencing with the phone. Naturally I am expecting more out of this phone than any other flagship phone I have because it is above and beyond better (or as the specs would have me believe).
Like for example swiping from the left in the xda app or the google plus app show the menu. On the G3 there is a noticeable delay before the menu shows. In my Z Ultra the menu just shows smoothly and follows my finger as I move it. It's not as smooth as on the G3.

I've added Roboto TTF font files to my "system/fonts" folder, but they don't appear in the "settings -> font type" menu.
Are they kept in a different folder to stock?
No, no. Don't manually copy them. Use ifont or font changer or romtoolbox. Whatever app you use just be careful as in my experience messing too much with font can cause bootloops. And without any custom recoveries available for the G3 as of this moment you'd be stuck. I personally used all of those three and I find ifont better as it replaces the whole set and all weights not just the default.

The M8 is the smoothest Android phone I've ever used, even on stock . The frame rate is consistent and it hardly ever lags. The only problem is, it's got a terrible camera.
I must agree with the people who experience lag and delays throughout the system. My first impression also was that it wasn't blazing fast, at least not at fast as I expected... But I did not buy this phone for the lg system/ecosystem. The first thing I did: install nova launcher prime. And I must say I have a smoother experience in the launcher department thanks to it.. For the rest: apps run fast, multitasking runs fairly smooth (although sometimes my recent apps are empty for some reason - just go back to home and my recent apps reappear).
I am not going to say this is a beast of a phone but it is decent, especially when you take in count all those pixels it has to push.
If you don't like it, feel free to change. But I am sure there are a lot of persons who really like this phone, including me.

I don't understand what you people are doing to see lag on this phone.. Although I've seen many posts saying that the T-Mobile version is much snappier than the att version.. Maybe due to bloat? Idk I'm completely stock running the GEL launcher and it's so much smoother than my nexus 5 (on L) or gs5
I dont have any lag issues and am running nova anyway.
The phone has its issues but i think its worth persevering with because its decently priced, the screen is excellent and you can actually do things about the battery life and screen with little or no effort. The camera on this thing really is great.

I'm with you. My only experience with Android devices is the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, which is said to be the smoothest Android experience available. I just don't see this lag that people go on and on about. Then again, I'm a minimalist user so I got rid of the weather widget, I got rid of the animations(which is the same thing I do on the Nexus 4 and 5 anyway). I still use the LG stock launcher and I am using ART
Believe me, since I work from home I use my phone a lot. I dunno, maybe it's faulty units, maybe the device just works well for me because of my minimalistic settings. I have certainly disabled and uninstalled as much bloat as I could without needing root access.

The camera on the m8 is beyond bad. What was htc thinking with 4mp, you can't zoom, expand, or crop at all.
This phone reminds me of the Motorola Droid X2, great specs on paper but poor performance. Music would actually skip on the x2 if you tried to do something else while listening. That's similar to the scale of the aux bug on this phone.
after debloating and switching launchers (nova) i have found no more than the occasional lag i've seen in every other flagship (i've had them all aside from the gs5)
as for the sidebar stutter, i've never had that happen either, the only consistent stutter i get is scrolling lag in facebook, which i've seen in every other phone aside from the nexus 5 while on the L preview.

On my 10.5 I am getting some slight lag but by no means does it make the app unusable for me. This is using the stock keyboard. Of course OneNote is pretty much indexing everything as you type it so it will lag more than just typing in a Web forum or word processor.
One thing I have done is to disable DVFS using Wanam Xposed. This is something Samsung implements which throttles your CPU to save battery life. IMHO it is a dumb idea and causes problems so I turn it off. I've found this improves on keyboard lag system wide so I may be getting better results in OneNote than you are.
Swiftkey is a lagfest for me on any device so can't comment on that.
One other thought. If OneNote is optimized for lower resolution screens that may also be having an effect on how it performs on the Tab S. Just making guesses at this point.
Anyway, so on the 10.5 not perfect but quite usable.

You guys keep blaming Exynos for everything. 5420 has been out on the N3, N10.1-14, Pros, and even Chromebook since last fall. If anything, I'd say a lot of the general performance issues being lamented have to do with the video drivers being used with the introduction of AMOLED. It's the only thing different h/w wise from the aforementioned devices.

Here's my quick example video. You can see it really bad at the end. There is about a 2-3 second lag from me typing to it appearing on the screen. After a few sentences, the lag makes typing impossible. I need to be able to type quickly for taking notes at work.
Can one of you who is reporting no lag type a few sentences quickly, and post the video? I want to find out if I have a defective device.

Are you rooted? Can you disable DVFS? I noticed that with DVFS enabled typing would bog down the more I typed. The Tab was throttling due to heating and with DVFS disabled this never happens. This isn't so much a hardware thing as a Touchwiz thing. It may be that typing makes it engage faster with the amoled screen than with other Touchwiz devices. My Note 3 is quite smooth. Have you tried an alternate launcher like Nova?
Or it could be you have a defective tab. Sadly there seems to have been a bad run. People who have had theirs replaced have been much more satisfied. I can't video actually typing sentences but will just try it and see what I think.
** UPDATE: Ok, just typed an entire paragraph in OneNote on my 10.5. Maybe a microsecond laggier than typing here but then again OneNote is indexing and this is not. Still, completely usable and no delays as you are experiencing.

Yes, perhaps a nanosecond but nothing like the 3 seconds the OP is experiencing. Imminently useable. I can see how in his use case there is a serious problem. There can be 100 reasons for that nanosecond lag other than the Exynos processor somehow being inadequate.

It's not that the exynos is inadequate, it's that the OneNote app 'might' not be optimised properly for the exynos processor, which seems to be the case here. Obviously the exynos processor can handle an app like OneNote.

For the OP he clearly has a serious problem. As configured with my 10.5 this is a non issue. If the suggestions I made are not of help to the OP I suggest he consider replacing his tablet with a newer production run model. 3 second input lag is an aberration and not acceptable.
P.S. Lack of OneNote optimization with Exynos may exist but since my experience is so superior to his it leads me to believe the issue is elsewhere. YMMV.

Have you considered using THUMB KEYBOARD from the play store? It is free and a very fast, well conceived keyboard, especially for use with tablets and the autocorrect is second to none. Give that a try too.

I appreciate the suggestion, but disabling DVFS had no effect.

Hmm OK. Did you reboot after disabling? Unless you are having some weird conflict with another app you are using or something about your setup you shouldn't be getting the lag you are.
This is not a well-loved app and apparently a recent version update pissed a lot of people off. I use S Note since Samsung released a Windows version because most of my "notes" are mobile>desktop not the other way around.

Not about being a fan boy, just tired of reading the same thing in every thread. This tablet should have ZERO lag, it is a beast. The screen should NOT be yellowed/distorted at all or be anything except phenomenal. If it's not, then return it for a different one or a replacement.
Like a few have said, there was obviously a bad batch because a few are having issues which I personally wouldn't be satisfied with, BUT others are not experiencing them in the slightest.
If you would like video proof I can make a video when I get off, but I literally have ZERO lag anywhere in this tablet and the screen color is amazing(obviously you'd have to view the video on something other than your tab s for true color reference).
My bottom line is you shouldn't have to pay $600 for something and worry with these defects. There shouldn't even be threads created about it. Return or exchange it. /thread.

Camera

This literally might be one of the worst smartphone cameras i have ever had. Does anyone agree? I feel tricked. I might sell this phone and get the z4v. The lack of enthusiasm here even shows little promise to me that this phone is even slightly future proof.

I agree. My Samsung gs4 camera ridiculously beats this phone by a lot.

Not much improvement after the firmware update either. It really is garbage for trying to focus and just overall quality in general. Not a deal breaker for me but just disappointing.

The best thing about firmware update is the battery doesn't overheat nearly as much. As for camera... It's still eh in my book.

I dumped HTC for a gs4 when it came out and while I loved the camera on the s4, everything else sucked. Touchwiz is slow and bloated, even when rooted, tweaked, debloated, etc. Even an Intel i7 couldn't make touchwiz fast. I quickly realized camera wasn't that big of a deal. Nothing that I've had to date has beaten the camera of my HTC rezound. I wish I would've kept it to use just as a camera. As for this one, like the m8 it takes some playing around with the settings to get optimal results. It's a pain sometimes, yes, I'd like to just pull out my phone and snap a quick quality pic but I can live with it. This camera wins some and loses some battles vs iPhone and Samsung. Bottom line. Is this camera great? No. Is it as bad as the bashers make it seem? No. It's somewhere in the middle. I haven't played with it after updating to 5.1 yet but I'm sure it didn't get worse.

I am sure the stock software experience on the Z4v would be better than the stock experience on the m9. I cant ship it out to get s-off so that may be my next route. I hope the software exploit beats me to it because I bave a special place in my heart for HTC
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using XDA Free mobile app
So do I. I'm hoping they come up with something good for the m10. They need to change it up a bit. Dump the 8 core, up the speaker volume, focus on the rear camera quality instead of MP. I'd like a note equivalent option as well.
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Tapatalk
Well it's way better than my m8 ..so that's a plus. Not really a camera guy, usually is the wife that goes crazy with pics.
I hope someone who is about to load one of the 5.1 ROMs will take some controlled environment photos before and after. It would be good to see an objective test.

its a phone first, camera is just an added bonus, problem is people expect to use thier phone to replace thier camera. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN! you ever try to blow up a cellphone picture.,....I dont care what brand it is, it will be pixelated.
I work in the personalization industry, and youd be suprised by the amount of poor quality photos people expect us to print on a canvas or tshirt(most of them iphone pics too), then get mad when they see the quality.....stop sending us cell phone pics..... Its sad the most people care about storage space, internet and camera, more than they do about the phone actually functioning as a phone...reception....who needs that anyway!
anyway yea the camera isnt the greatest, but sure beats my moto razr hd that couldnt even make phone calls without randomly reseting, or my samsung galaxy s5 that chugged along and recognized my finger inputs 5 minutes later....

I 100% agree with that, i do buy a phone for a good camera, as i take alot of random pictures. With the 5.1 update, that camera has been fixed IMMENSELY.... Im not saying it went from crap to great (my wife's S6 destroys this thing), but it is tolerable now. I think the camera can be made better still with software improvements, but at least it is on the right track.

The Panasonic CM1 is enough to replace a camera. Perhaps not a full frame but it's good enough! It just needs OIS :/ (and a lower price).
It would be really great if someone would take and post some controlled pictures before and after getting the 5.1 upgrade.

What to do?! Current G4 User

Ok first off, I owned the lg g3, then the note 4, then the note edge, then the s6 edge and now the G4. Ok, my problem is I'm coming from the G4 and I'm having several issues after replacing a G4 only 4 days after having it. It has reboot issues and 2 dead pixels on the screen already. I'll watch a YouTube video and then hit home button and the YouTube sound plays in the background and it's odd. And I've noticed a lot of lag. (same issues I had with s6 edge and note edge). Has anyone come from the G4 or s6 edge and enjoy this phone without regrets? I wanna make a good move on my end.

I have not seen those sorts of issues. Certainly not YouTube audio continuing. I do get occasional lag when going back to the Home screen, it acts as if the launcher has to re-load or something, it takes a second or two, then all the icons appear again. But I have not been able to figure out a pattern to this.

If you are having these problems you should find out if you are buying a brand new phone or not and then sell what you have and get the nexus 6 from a reliable source. Preferably your carrier website or store. 28mobile sells legit unlocked phones if thats what your want.

So youtube has a background play feature might want to see if you have it on. Lag when going to the home screen, happens on pretty much every phone out there and reboot issues? How so?
Also dead pixels are something you c an get a replacement for

It would be nice to leave Youtube playing in the background sometimes, just for audio.

Hmm, this sounds like a paid service? That's too bad, I was hoping it was just a setting hidden somewhere
As for lag when going back to the Home screen, I have Dual Windows disabled, but I still sometimes get Home lag behavior, where the icons don't appear for a few seconds.
Using lg g2 now for fun and trust me it is faster

Guys, lol, I coming from a g4 and wondering if switching to the nexus 6 sound be a good idea. I held a nexus 6 and my g4 and the camera on the front want that bad. Still took decent shots and looked pretty good. ( don't take many selfies) And yeah the screen was dim compared. But I want others opinions. I to sell the g4 For about $450 and buy a nexus 6 and wireless charger. Wanted to know what others felt about the nexus 6 and such. I don't need those extra gimmicks and such.

Disable lg smart card and remove lg smart weather widget, turn off lg smart settings. Freeze carrier bloat.
Remove user installed apps, some app you had on edge s6 doing same to g4.
Note most replacements are refurbs...

I've owned both. Tbh, the 6 was cool but felt old after a short while. The speakers are nice, but that's about it. The screen sucks period! Being limited on storage and battery is a burden to me.. I like swapping batteries and carrying more than 32gb of stuff.

Corners were obviously cut to make it, yet it still carried a premium price.
