I'm a fueler at the airport and my note fell out this stupid jacket pocket straight into a 6 foot pit of jet fuel. It took maintenance 10 mins to come get it out. I've let it dry with the battery out for the past 6 hours and just turned it on and everything is working flawlessly except the microphone. I have to talk on soeakerphone which sucks. I wonder if I find a nice rep if they will exchange it. Probably not. Not sure if this is the right section to put this but just thought I'd share this and I will update if the speaker starts to work if it's not closed

Sounds scary. Could the battery short and cause an explosion or does jet fuel need a certain mixture to ignite?

Do you have coverage? Just fixing that might be cheaper than replacing the whole phone...not sure though
Odds of them replacing it when it is your fault are very slim imo
mic just isnt dry yet. give it time.

put it in a bag of un cooked rice and let it sit for several hours or a day, it will suck out all the moisture.
If all else fails, buy squaretrade, wait a bit, then file a claim. Although they might believe you more if you said you dropped it in water, lol.
If you can still use the speakerphone it's not the microphone that's dead, it's the earpiece. The microphone is used regardless of speaker mode. You might be lucky enough to find a replacement earpiece online and fix it yourself. It looks like the Note 3 is easy to take apart just like previous Samsung phones if you have the small tools required. Of course it could also be the circuitry that drives the earpiece so replacing it might be futile. If jet fuel is acidic it could have corroded the wires of the earpiece speaker and/or eaten through the plastic diaphragm of the speaker.
Jet fuel is usually kerosene based and should not have a deteriorating effect on most rubbers or plastics. The rice definitely works with water and should absorb any liquid. Leave it in for 24-72 hours, checking every day.

DKYang, please don't advocate insurance fraud on this site. It is a felony in most states (probably for the conspirators too). IANAL
Did the water damage sticker on the battery change color? That's they only way they could determine water damage right? If it did maybe you can grab a new battery or try to bleach it.
When did you purchase your phone? I think you can still purchase insurance or use jump+insurance within a limited period from the purchase date. Then file a claim after a reasonable number of days.

I bought the phone 4 days ago. Its been soaking in rice all night and the mic is coming back around but I have to yell. I will continue to let it soak for a while longer and see how it goes. Crazy part is that I used the voice recorder app and the mic picked up perfectly. Thanks everyone for their concern! Hopefully this rice trick works bc I would really hate to spend $175 and give up this phone that im still paying for

Squaretrade allows up to 30 days since buying the phone for you to buy insurance from them. I didn't see it as fraud since they give you that window.
From Squaretrade's site:
"However, if you buy your warranty on a different day than the item, then the coverage begins 30 days after the warranty purchase.
Regardless of when you buy the warranty, ADH does not cover pre-existing conditions"
---------- Post added at 06:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:45 AM ----------
This phone has 3 mics on it to support the background noise cancellation. The phone runs a pretty sophisticated algorithm to determine what sound is coming from your mouth area and what is background:
1) bottom - left of the usb
2) bottom-right corner
3) top - next to the headphone jack
It sounds to me that one of the main/bottom mics is the culprit - this could result in the phone cancelling your voice as background noise unless you shout.
Try turning off the cancellation and see if that helps as a work-around between overnight dry rice packs. (Settings - Call settings - Noise Reduction)

Why isnt anyone suggesting that he go back to Tmo and just tell them that phone isnt working correctly? they'll swap it out for a new working phone if its within 14 days. If the sticker is red just try to be really nice and act like you never even opened the back cover. Of course this will not work if the phone reeks of JETFUEL!!!! lol

Do our Epics have 2 mics?
People cannot hear me on a call unless I'm in speakerphone. It seems as though they can hear me blowing into the mic during a regular call if I blow into the hole on the bottom right (plz hold the 6th grade jokes).

I don't think we have two mics. I believe that the sensitivity of the mic is increased when in speakerphone mode.
Interesting, perhaps I have something stuck deep inside.
Or I have a setting snafoo, though I doubt it, since I have clean wipe flashed 4 roms in the past 24 hours.
Sent from my 1987 EpicBrick
Anyway to up the sensitivity manually until I can figure it out?
Sent from my 1987 EpicBrick
I had a similar (actually opposite issue) as the OP. When I was on speakerphone, no one could hear me. But when I held and spoke on the phone the traditional away (in other words phone up to my ear and not on speakerphone), then people could hear me. Tried reflashing EC05 then OTA to EI22 and that did not fix the issue. Determined it was a hardware issue. Ended up going to Sprint and having phone replaced (I had TEP).
I read recently, maybe today, that our phones have two mics. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read that, so I can't back it up with a source! Based on the description of both of your problems, it seems logical that the phone has and uses two different mics depending on whether the user is in speakerphone mode or not.
This phone indeed does have two mics. The second microphone is used only for speaker phone, and is located in the right hand portion of the earpiece grille.
What's unfortunate is that although that mic is part of an array that includes the front camera and keyboard and is easily replaceable, the main microphone is on the board and requires the phone to be swapped.

This is actually a pretty common symptom of bad mics that come in to our store: no one can hear you talk or even yell, but for some reason, the mic will pick you up blowing in to it. I suspect its because your simply putting more physical pressure on the mic, but I've never been able to come to a good conclusion.

partly correct- it's on the board with the keyboard, but not the camera, and doesn't require a phone swap. the circuit board can be replaced; i watched the tech replace mine, in store, in about 15 minutes. i was impressed they had the part in stock.
(no insurance, no cost either)

When I exchanged mine the rep looked at the white dot to the LEFT of the battery. Don't think the W1 and W2 are the water indicators.

I had the unfortunate experience of dropping mine in water about 2 months ago. There are 2 indicators that are easily seen to my knowledge with just removing the back cover:
- Just to the left of the battery approx 2/3 the way up from the bottom of the phone there is a little hole with a normally white dot indicator. This will turn red if subjected to water
- The battery also has an indicator on the bottom where the charging contacts are. This is normally a white strip that will also turn red when subjected to water
Just a note that mine was -fully- submerged for approximately 60 seconds and it took about another 60 seconds before I got the battery out (fumbling a wet phone to get the back cover off). I popped the battery out and put all of the separate pieces fully covered in about an inch of rice both on top and bottom for about 24 hours. After turning everything back on things were crackling and popping for a bit and I resigned myself to just getting a new one. However I left it on and the next day it worked completely fine! Nothing is different and works just like when it was new a few months prior.
Kudos to Samsung for making a phone that can take this and still keep working!
Hope this helps.

Just for information purposes... the i747 doesn;t have as many water indicators as its i9300 twin. And the one on the phone that it does have can be..uh... "replaced".
Not sure how to "replace" the one on the battery; though a new battery isn't that expensive.
mine slid off a shelf into the toilet by itself because of loud music i guess but the battery strip is pink but the other one is red is there anything i can say or do to get a different one the phone is about 4-5 days old not on dent scratch or anything, the phone works just not the speaker phone i got it from best buy and have ATT insurance which will make me pay 200 dollar deductible for anther 1

That would be insurance fraud my friend. Not the best place to discuss that type of thing. Replacing it for yourself is one thing, replacing it and sending in for warranty as if nothing happened = no no. I would just go into the best buy store tell them your speaker isn't working. If your lucky they won't check the water DMG seals

Maybe I misunderstood, I thought you were trying to replace the water damage indicator then take it into best buy and say that you had bought the phone and the speaker didn't work hoping they would replace it for free due to the fact that you recently bought it, because of your mistake of dropping it in the toilet.

Had a warranty exchange through AT&T and they ask what the color of the dot next to the battery compartment is. White - Good. Anything else - horrible times for the whole family.

It is very fair. Don't let it fall in water. Electronics 101.
Unfortunately the previous poster is right. I know its not exactly helpful to just say not to let it fall in water but its true. If you haven't let the phone dry out completely I'd try the bag of white rice trick. Its a last ditch effort but it has been proven to work in some cases. Drop the phone in a bag of rice for 24 hours and see if it soaks up any moisture.

The insurance is there for this very purpose. Fraud is an illegal action and for legal matters, encouraging it on XDA is not allowed.
If the indicator is red, and every attempt to get it fully working has failed, then use your insurance. $200 to replace is better than full price.

I believe the case uses a 1 way type of mesh that allows sound out but no fluids in. The otterbox armor series has a similar mesh that allows no water in but sound out. I'd just wait for that case

I have the obex , I absolutely hate worst case I ever owened people can hear you when your usimg the phone , the people on the other line sound muffled , only way to use the phone call option is turning speaker phone on.. but I don't know about you all but don't want everyone to know what I'm talking about
Also when phone in this case as well the back button takes forever to get it to respond and you almost have to force the button down , the built screen protector is ten times worse then the otterbox defender its sensitivity sucks
Would I recommend this case to anyone ? HECK NO !!!
If I could get my money back would I send it back? HECK YES !!!
IM WAITING for the otterbox armor case that looks way better and not a rushed product like the obex was.... they rushed there product to beat otterbox and lifeproof to the sales floor .. thus its a big piece of junk

It was bound to happen and it did...I was rushing to get out of work, had my Note 3 in my pocket, it flew out onto tile floor (uneven tile floor), and slid about 3 feet. It fell face down and I have a 2.5 inch scratch on the screen that's not noticeable unless I have the screen off and look closely. Not bad at all for the first fall. I'm waiting for my case with screen protector to come so I've been using it without one. So, have any of you dropped your Galaxy Note 3 yet? If so, how did it turn out? And yes, I do have insurance on my phone lol.
Mine fell from about 3 feet on to tile floor from my bed last night when my girl decided to jump on top of me while my phone was on my side it slid off the bed and after the business I looked and all was fine. Needless to say I am upset that certain companies haven't had their cases available yet.

Sadly yes, I've dropped my GN3 already. It fell about 3 feet or so as I was trying to rip a piece of toilet paper off the roll. It's not what you think though lol. I was ripping a piece off so I could blow my nose.
So now I have a slight scuff on two corners of the phone, and the bottom left corner actually bent inwards a little bit from the impact. Can't wait until my cases come so I can hide that little blemish. So be very careful guys! The little metallic lip on the front of our phones is really delicate.

Agreed; stuff like this is why I hardly ever take my note 3 out of the house until I can find a decent quality case (or an otter box). already had a GS4 go out of commission, my sister's GS3 was KIA, so to use the N3 as a daily driver atm would be rather risky and I'd rather not chance it.

Yeah, but I figured since I have insurance and all, I may as well use my phone freely until I get a case. Hopefully my case will be here within the next couple of days. I just can't use any other device once I have the latest and greatest.

I dropped mines on concrete, screen is fine, but theres a nasty dent on the top corner.
I dropped it about 14 inches as I was falling asleep onto the hard carpet on our screened in patio, I looked at the screen and it looked like ink bleeding in a corner. I was freaking out until I realized it was actually part of the wallpaper, needless to say I changed the wallpaper and will never use that picture again. On a side note some of the wallpapers included in Darthstalker are awesome, Darth Vader leaning against a Vietnam like war memorial for lost stormtroopers is really cool lol.

This happened to me too same scratches as well
Bent the corner on the bezel by the s pen when I tripped on a concrete step. Top corner by the power button scratched. Why sell a phone if you don't offer at least some cheap cases for sale at the store?

4 days old - broken screen
Yeah!
My wife's phone fell of the mantle, landing on a concrete shelf at the base of the fireplace. Landing square on the power button, bending it in so that the device reboots every 10 seconds. cracked the screen - lcd doesn't light up, but the phone still comes on.
I'm looking for data retrieval options now. Check my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480479
I had a bad wreck 2 days ago. I weigh over 300 pounds and was thrown around in my truck like a rag doll before it came to rest. Thank God I'm ok and walked away with just some bruises and scratches. As soon add I gathered myself I began to look for my phone and found it in the back passenger floor, completely unarmed

I heard that. And screen protectors too.

Yup, fell off the bathroom sink on a tile floor. No dents or anything.
I dropped mine right on it's corner in a parking lot. The sound it made gave me a mini heart attack. Luckily this $4 tpu case actually saved it.

I had mine in a car dock that was suctioned onto the dash. Either the weight of the phone, or the suction just gave out, or both, and it fell to the floor. No damage since it was in a Neo Hybrid case, and the floor was carpeted, but it still gave me that "NOOOOO!!!!" moment.
Bought the phone and case at the same time. D3O has not let me down yet.
Yep. Everything still works. Lol. Oh, I had a case on it as well

Just picked up my new M8 yesterday. After using it for a day I have noticed a crackling nosie coming from the top speaker, almost as if its blown. Is anyone else having this problem or am I just unlucky?
Mine does it on calls and not music

Don't have a speaker problem but just noticed a defect on the top speaker right below the camera. The covering is coming off slightly and isn't level with the screen. You can tell the glue isn't very strong it pushes back in and then come s right back when you remove your finger. Gonna try to get it replaced from T-Mobile. You have 14days to get a replacement I highly recommend doing it if you're not satisfied.

No crackling on my speakers. I've heard several people having this issue with the M8 from other carriers. I would definitely take it back and exchange it.

Yea thats what I figured I would do. I found a video on YouTube of a guy claiming a toothbrush could fix it, doesn't work! Now the only problem is finding a store in my area that has them in stock!
I just picked up mine yesterday and it has the same issue.

I'm glad to know its not just me! My friend has the Dev version and the difference between the two is very noticible. However it isn't terrible if the volume is under half, so until I can get a new one that's how its going to stay
Took mine back to the store. They tried the demo phone and got the same results. So I'm waiting on my replacement. Unfortunately if its the same, I might have to switch to the s5

The store you took it back to should issue the replacement

They're waiting for another shipment. Both stores in my area sold out.

Same issue here, pretty annoying. Going to take it back later today, but not sure if I'll be able to get an exchange - as others have mentioned, most stores are sold out. Pretty lame of HTC, now I'll have $636 burning a hole in my pocket for the next week or so - 636 that could go towards an S5 or something. :/

I have about a dozen stores in my area, all are sold out. One guy told me they only got like 5 of them in, wtf.
My store finally got some in! Walked in, put it on the desk, the lady said "Speaker Problem?" ran to the back, got me a new one and I was out in 10 min. New device works great!

Would you describe the defect as a constant metallic grating sound in the background of songs and whatnot?

Yeah I'm on my 3rd one and it finally seems to be OK. The hard part is finding a store that has them in stock or admits they have them when you tell them you want to do an exchange. :/
Anyways, one the sales guys told me they've had a lot of S5's coming back too, due to various misc issues.

Ummm... i would put it very close to the noise my car speaker made when it was recently blown... Again only coming out of the top speaker when it was turned up. It just sounded like a rattle... The one thing that I really noticed it on was MKBHD's review on the Dot Cover Case. 10 seconds into him talking it had already sounded crappy. Thats the video I used to reference my new one.

Yup, basically sounds like my problem. Looks like I'm going in tomorrow for an exchange. Thanks!
Speaker volume, troubleshooting steps?
I compared the speaker volume and quality of my HTC one M8 speakers with my Samsung note 2 and found out the volume level of both the devices was more or less the same, but the HTC offered a little more bass.
The sound is very less at 50% volume level and drastically increases after 80%-100%
I am not sure if the speakers of my device are up to the mark. How do you guys troubleshoot the speakers sound? Any specific method or just relying on ears?

Ive just been going off of my ears... Again depending on what I was listening to it was sometimes hard to hear. But I used MKBHD's review of the Dot Cover case to go off of. I could tell in the first 10 seconds.
1 year warranty
Just wanna remind you guys that tmobile has a 1 year guarantee on any phone you purchase from them, so even if you're past your 14 days you can still call customer service and get them to send you a replacement. The only thing the 1 year warranty doesn't cover is physical damage like a broken screen/body or water damage. I've had tmo for over 10 years and have gotten a bunch of replacements on phones that developed issues.
I am having this crackling, popping, static annoying, irritating, hurting noise during call... actually mine is at&t.. I bought two of them and they had the same issue.. Also lot other issues highlighted in various forums (like bluetooth, battery life, etc)
