[Q] Unrooted HTC Desire Z on boot loop - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone. First of all, please bear with me for I am absolutely a newbie here and have a very limited knowledge on android(or any other) os. Not much of a tech savvy so please, go easy on me. I just wanna try the possible solutions you guys could give me and help my sis save hundreds of bucks from acquiring new phone or going to pricey repair shops.
The phone's HTC Desire Z A7272 (unrooted)
So here's the problem: When I try to turn on the phone, it's just stuck on the HTC logo(w/o the quietly brilliant tag below it). Prior that, my sister was just using the fb app when it suddenly froze. She waited for a couple of mins for it to respond, but nothing happens so she pulled out the battery. When she turned it on, it's stuck on a boot loop (HTC logo+quietly brilliant). We tried removing the battery for a while to let it cool before placing it back but still, same thing happens. We even tried booting it after draining the battery and having it fully charged, w/ and w/o the SD card and sim, but to no avail. Now, it's still stuck on boot loop: HTC logo(w/o quietly brilliant below) then green arrows icon with gray loading bar.
We're able to access the HBoot and here are the details:

On Fastboot, I tried the Reboot and the other options but it just goes on a boot loop.
When I select Recovery, it boots on logo, then there's green arrows icon with gray loading bar below, and then a red triangle with down arrow inside. I read somewhere that it's the stock recovery and from there I could wipe/clear cache, but then when I tried pressing and holding the Up+Down+Power buttons, it says E: couldn't wipe cache/ mount command/recovery - something like that.
When I select Factory Reset, it just loops on the HTC logo and the green arrows icon.
I tried installing HTC sync and connected the phone via USB, but it can't detect the phone(though the PC can, as mass storage and on HBoot it shows 'HBOOT USB PLUG')
My sis downloaded an RUU from HTCDev and copied it to SD Card. She said she was able to Clear/Wipe Cache Partition and data
via bootloader but when it reboots, it's still on the same state.
After looking on some threads with similar issue, some say the ROM may be corrupted so I downloaded stock recovery, stock ROMs (changed the file name to PC10IMG.zip) and copied it to the SD card hoping that it'd reinstall the ROM but still, no effect.
Probably, the ones I've downloaded aren't compatible to the unit, but I don't know how and where to get the exact official ones for the device.
Others are suggesting that I should flash a ROM, but then it requires to root the phone - I don't wanna risk doing it 'cause I'm afraid I might do more damage.
Is there a way to simply reprogram or reformat it(just like what you do on PCs) with fresh/original stock ROM?
Some say that it could be hardware damage (eMMc/Mobo) - hopefully not >_< , but others tell that since we could access the boot loader it's more likely a software issue.
We also see people mentioning things like Gold card, adb, kernels, etc. but we just get more confused upon reading them(too much tech jargon to take)
Are we doing everything wrong? Please let us know.
Most of the solutions we find online are for rooted phones. Hers isn't and just want her phone to get fixed.
Please help. We're really clueless. Do you think this is a hopeless case?
Sorry for this very long post, but I hope I was able to explain the problem well.
Thanks for taking your time in reading this post. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- Meg

Sounds to me like its a fried eMMC, in which case there's nothing that can be done.
Seeing as the phone is completely stock, there's not many ways to check if this is the case, but trying to flash a new stock rom won't hurt the phone at all.
Any chance you can run (in fastboot mode) 'fastboot getvar all' and copy those results here?

Hi Nipqer!
I tried going to shipped-roms but the thing is, I actually don't know what particular stock rom to download. Is there like a key or serial number that I should look for that's compatible to my device?

Hi, i've had a similar problem and found a suitable ruu rom in 6th attempt
i've tried with 5 random rom's until i've downloaded one with radio version of my Desire Z.
try with official from shipped-roms_dot_com under Vision folder and search your rom with radio version (26.10.04.03) - there are 3 available;
change zip name, save on sd and try :good:
p.s.
maybe your emmc is still ok

Hi merslavics!
Yep, phone's okay now I was able to find the right ruu after reading through the threads here regarding that matter. You're right, we should take note of the CID and radio versions to get the right match. Success after 3 attempts! Cheers!

HTC DESIRE HD RUU update result bricked phone logo screen HELP

Hi guys!!
I really need your help. after unsuccessful attempt to update my HDT with ruu file (dont know which one) it ended up with white screen. i thought no big deal. i ll fix that but after numerous attempts to return stock i realize that something that i do is not right so help me please.
my HD is locked and first i tried to unlock bootloader on htcdev but my hboot 2.00.027 is no longer support as htcdev claims. it needs to be updated.
This is the RUU file that according to my knowledge matches the requirements of my phone but oviously not.

i tried with it flash from sd card - it comes to do you want to update? pressed vol.buton +. update in progress and that stuck for over a hour.
tried via computer and usb cabel. after running exe file it stuck on rebooting in bootloader.
tried flash over adb and fastboot command via cmd. fastboot devices shows that phone is connected but it stuck on next command fastboot erase cache.
here are the characteristic of the phone.

PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND THE RIGHT RUU or any other method that would work.
bear in mind iam unrooted.
What am i supposed to do to fix my phone? any clue?
via RUU or .... ............
If your aiming for a stock rom, Just create a goldcard and try flashing your stock rom.
You can extract the rom.zip file in ruu by
The process:
- Download a RUU from anywhere (you already have one)
- Open/Run the .exe You'll get something like this
- Click the Start button
- Select the Run command and type in: %temp%
- Search for a folder that has a bunch of characters and looks somewhat like this: {XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX} just keep on searching in each folder, if you have patience you'll find it.
- And inside that folder should be another folder that looks the same, and has the format above.
- Find a zip file called rom.zip -
-Rename the rom.zip to PD98IMG.zip
If you already created a goldcard. put the PD98IMG.zip in the root of your sd card
Go to bootloader and pressing -volume and power button.
Rom zip will automatically detected and you will be ask to update.
Hope it helps "newbie here" :fingers-crossed:
Iam not aiming on stock. actually i dont care. i just want my phone back working.
i dont have a goldcard. can i make one with unrooted and locked phone?
i tried with flash from sd card extracted rom and renamed as PD98IMG - it comes to do you want to update? pressed vol.buton up than shows update in progress and stuck for over a hour.
doesent work
thanks for effort
Its easy to create a goldcard, any sd card will do.
Links is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157
if you cannot get your cid just use the attach file goldcard.img below
i dont know if it would work, but since you haven't find any solution yet, you could at least try.
Hope it helps your phone...:fingers-crossed:

Have you tried with a different sdcard? have you also checked the md5sum or the RUU? maybe you can flash it in fastboot (read the guide in my signature to find out how)

HTC Desire 816w SoftHard Brick s-on tampered relocked costly repear

How did this happen, i dont know but phone is bricked while someone tired to put new RoM on it.
Authorized HTC service asked for 150$ to repear phone by replacing motherboard. I found it strange since phone is entering recovery, and i am trying to see if I can bring it back to life. So far, not good.
I tryed to flash RUU (exe file) from ofical htcdev site, phone resets (gray htc logo appear) and its stuck at "sending 0/6". And before flash RUU did not see active version on phone (showed only version that should be updatet on phone) I have suspicion that this phone is made for Asia market but i cant fine RUU other then Europe.
Before I tired this with "Unlocked" and then i relocked it and tried with "Relocked"
Now I am trying to find out how to make "SD gold card" and see if i can flash some new ROM with it. but I am very new at this so I need some time. Is it posible this phone is Hard Bricked with bad root?

Thank you for any help!
If you can get into recovery I think you can get back to a working phone.
1) I would flash twrp if you don't have it already installed. Put a copy of twrp backup of a previous stock ROM for your 816 version on a SD card. Either by USB if you can or remove the SD from phone and do it manually @ your PC(you may need to mountsd card when you're done).
2) In twrp go to the restore menu and make sure you can see the backup you want to restore.
3) Do an advanced wipe dalvik cache, system, cache, data and internal storage. You can even format data if you want.
4) Restore twrp backup.
Hopefully you have a working phone at this point and can follow steps to upgrade via RUU then OTA.
Thanks for replay!
I tired downloading twrp.img and do
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
All i got is
sending 'recovery' (11340 KB)...
FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error))

Im not even sure if i can flash custom recovery if phone is S-on and relocked? No one in my contry cant fix this phone. They just dont know i gues.. How can it be hard bricked if i can enter recovery mode?
Update on trying
I downloaded rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-816/general/ruu-htc-desire-816-a5chl-ruu-file-t2920254 changed name to 0P9CDIAG.zip and updated it over sd card. There was loading and checking, when it was finished I reboted phone. Now phone just enters recovery mode (you dont need to hold buttons anymore), and now "RUU" from offical htcdev says "signiture error" and its not stuck at "sending 0/6"
Also i got ***Security Warning*** now below "relocked"
Im not sure if this is a good or bad thing
I believe that you used the wrong ruu. You need an a5_dug ruu. You used the virgin mobile desire ruu.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
If you have access to a reliable and fast internet connection and a credit card, there are websites that update your phone via internet for a price, much cheaper than motherboard change

As for online flashing, I dont think they can do much bether.. How hard can it be, Just need to find out what rom i should flash, how, and where to find it
Can "goldSD card" be of any use here?
I unlocked bootloader again, now i am trying to find out if i can S-OFF from fastboot so i can instal any rom.. Any ideas?
I managed to get CWM recovery... Still dont know what im doing, i hope i wont screw this up.
Step forward, 2 steps back
So, i tryed to "install zip" BinDroid_Desire816_DualSIM_V2.0.0 with CWM. It goes throu, but at the restart, phone is still stuck (nothing happens)
Now i fould CWM backup here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2772771 and while restoring i got problem

Any help with this? Thanks!
Thanks everyone for help, i managed to install BinDroid with TWRP recovery (from there i formated internal memory)!
It was fun doing something new
Thanks!

HTC Desire stuck in fastboot

I searched, I searched, searched some more and tried probably everything there is, but the phone seems really bricked. In the bortak's troubleshooting guide, it falls under advanced boot problems, first with S-OFF, now it's in S-ON state.
I got this phone for free, I don't know what the previous owner did. I got it stuck in fastboot mode with alpharev logo (joker).
1) There is no ADB access, only fastboot is available, no matter what I do, so goldcard cannot be made.
2) When turned on, phone boots into fastboot mode, displaying black screen with HTC logo and four triangles in the corners
3) It used to have alpharev hboot with S-OFF, now it's with stock HBOOT with S-ON
4) Tried various WWE RUU, they all fail at Radio-V2 Fail PU, all other points are a success. Image update returns always error 152. Radio version does change however, when checked in vars
5) The phone does not recognize any zip file I put in root of 1GB FAT SD card, so that option is out as well.
6) "fastboot oem boot" gets stuck in white screen with HTC logo. I remove batt and it boots again into fastboot.
7) I am able to flash boot and recovery with fastboot, but it does not make a difference. It won't boot into recovery or anything other than fastboot..

Do I have a genuine brick?
Unfortunately you have the "Radio-V2 Fail PU". Pretty much a radio brick which is the worst kind.
You can keep trying to run an RUU (try the 2.3.3 GB RUU, use the PB99IMG.zip method), and it may eventually flash. I've seen the 'freezer trick' (genuinely) on these forums where you put the phone in a bag in a freezer for a few minutes, then try the RUU. It may increase the chances of success, but even if it works, it's likely to brick itself because it's a hardware related issue.

Thanks, I know you are not joking about freezer - I had a friend that hacked PICs by freezing them to certain temp and then heating them up. I will certainly give it a try.
PB99IMG.zip method did not work for me, I never get a prompt to install anything from SD card.

I only did the PB99IMG.zip method once, but found it easiest since it avoids USB or driver issues.
-Make sure it's named "PB99IMG.zip" exactly, not "PB99IMG.zip.zip"
-Then put it on the root of the SD card, not in any folder
-Boot into bootloader (volume down + power), not fastboot. Wait a few seconds for it to find the file, then follow instructions to flash.
Hope you can get it back to life somehow though...

I believe I cannot make it boot to bootloader, it's always fastboot. It's either black screen with four triangles, or white screen with several lines of params in the top lef corner and with RUU as the last line, as soon as I pull the USB cable out. Battery out then power and volume down always takes it to black HTC screen.

Hi all,
I have installed the rom GPE with this cid and mid, S-off but i lost my carrier, sim is no unlocked. Then i try to back to stock rom. The big mistake i have do is to do no backup of my original CID and MID. So during 3 mouths i had try all solutions that i see on the web ex :

Hi all,
I have installed the rom GPE with this cid and mid, S-off but i lost my carrier, sim is no unlocked. Then i try to back to stock rom. The big mistake i have do is to do no backup of my original CID and MID. So during 3 mouths i had try all solutions that i see on the web ex :
Fashing splash firmware : 1.54.401.5 with stock rom but the phone always stuck on bootloader
Then i try 1.54.401.10 , 4.16.401.5 , 4.16.401.10 and last 2.22.401.4 with there rom stock and sotck recovery but nothing change, always stuck on bootloader.
NB : i'm in super CID
I have try :
1) wirecid : supercid or HTC__001 or HTC__J15 etc...
2) Flashing firmware 1.54.401.5, 1.54.401.10, 4.16.401.5, 4.16.401.10, 2.22.401.4
3) flashing custom recovery twrp
4) format data and changing partition cache because it's always corruped after flashing new firmware
5) install rom stock with there firmware :
0P6BIMG_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_4.16.401.10_Radio_1.25.214500021.06G_20.68.4196t.01_F_release_417809_signed.zip

insertcoin-7.1.9-REPACK-M8_UL_L50_SENSE70_MR_HTC_Europe_4.16.401.10.zip
rom_one_m8_2.22.401.4_odexed.zip revolution HD
Android_Revolution_HD-One_M8_45.0_758ff1.zip
m8_1.54.401.5_AROMA
6) reboot phone, but stuck on bootloader
7) try to flash boot.img and stock recovery on the firmware but nothing change,
8) try to enter to stock recovery but redirected in bootloader
9) try to lock bootloader
I have do this with all firmware and rom
I have try to install with ruu.exe but the application have error 155, i have change the cid and mid to match with in the androidinfo.txt.
!!! But boot with custom like CM12, Carbon rom etc... the only problem is that the simcard is not detected.
If anyone have other solution ?

Your device is a Sprint .. you shouldn't convert it to any Intl GSM/GPE. You shouldn't change its MID.
Not sure whether this is still fixable because on Verizon I know, this conversion will kill the radio.
Change back your MID to 0P6B70000
and get the correct firmware and RUU here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
Anything you're not sure, ask in that thread or in Sprint Q&A
Hold Power + Volume Up for at-least 20secs and when screen turns black, release the buttons and hold Volume Down until you enter bootloader... which is mainly couple of seconds.

The OP is already in bootloader, and stuck there.
CID Numbers (Sprint only):
SPCS_001: standard Sprint M8
SPCS_004: Harman/Kardon version M8
I would try to rewrite the correct cid--> Update Hboot to 3.19-->Relock Bootloader-->Flash latest Ruu

Tho latest Ruu should already contain the 3.19 Hboot

In addition to your comment, that hboot does not need to be updated before RUU (RUU will do it):
1) Need to change MID back to Sprint MID to RUU
2) Shouldn't need to change CID, but it doesn't hurt to do so.
3) No need to relock bootloader to RUU, since OP is s-off.
But I agree, the OP should try to RUU back to Sprint stock image. (and obviously take the actions to meet the requirements to do so). After that, if is still doesn't work its probably a radio brick.

Error 155 is usually fixed by relocking Bootloader. Since the phone is in a funny state I would advise putting all chances on your side. Dont worry if the logic says S-off doesnt need BL relocked , you just need every chance to flash Stock ruu back to the phone
Thanks, i will try it...
So, if it's work i can unlock the phone to use another operator ?

Boot Loader Loop, Unlocked, S-Off, Rooted HTC M8 Tmobile
A year ago I believe I used HBoot and or Firewater to root my M8. I recently removed some applications that seemed to make my phone act funny, and now the phone is stuck in a boot loop, or rather just a boot and stop at the second HTC "One" screen. Not exactly a loop.
I've download ADB tool and tried the fastboot method to install TWRP but have no success because the computer does not recognize the phone while running ADB or Fastboot, therefore I cant install TWRP and am stuck in the bootloader menu. I have tried various different cables and restarted the pc several times, and installed htc sync and other drivers necessary for that process. Also uninstalled and installed different drivers later as well. Now im not sure what i have installed but I have access to the phones internal drive via explorer.
Using Hboot.

Recovery leads to nothing and eventually returns to the HTC One menu stop.
Reset does nothing, acts like fast boot actually.
Ramdump under fastboot seems to works, and does produce log files.
While the phone was still active, I managed to create a full "manual" backup of the device by plugging it in and backing up/copying the entire internal memory. After screwing with the phone and every option for several hours I managed to access the files of the internal memory by switching to recovery mode via the boot menu and then plugging in the phone via usb to comp while deleting the drivers at the same time. I tried a full restoration of the internal backup i made, by copy and replace if the same method, but still nothing.
Ive attached an image of the Hboot menu with the details and options of that Hboot for those of you familiar with hboot.
The ideal situation, or what i'd like to do is restore the phone without flashing the rom and loosing the information, then id like to upgrade to lollipop or a new custom rom I found here actually, but the first step is getting back into the phone which i would be very grateful for in general.
also, not great with cmd and all that stuff, I do have sdk tools downloaded and installed but not great with that either. If there was a more simple way to replace existing files in the phone via the file manager (because im able to access the internal drive via the file manager, that would be the most ideal and easiest situation. But knowing the path and the boot files and which files are necessary for boot is what im looking for as well.
Also i know how to flash a sd and htc has a sdcard slot as well. Also i should mention that prior to the phone being screwed up I did want to delete some internal certificates because i believe someone installed a spy application on the phone, hence the reason for all of this checkup and removal anyway. In the process of trying to do that, i followed a tutorial on this forum which suggested I create a security lock pin, which I did. This could also be the cause of the problem not being recognized by the adb or fastboot script.
Who ever helps me do that gets a tip.
Please help.

HELP, m8 stuck in bootloop at "starting apps."

hi i've got a huge problem with my htc m8. it wont boot anymore and always keeps on beeing stuck on "android is starting... starting apps." after an optimization of 167 apps. have been pulling an all nighter and im at the end of the rope unfortunatly =(.
i alrdy hard reset it several times. through bootloader factory reset, as well as recovery and wipe data/fac reset. i only can stop the bootloop by pressing power+volume up and switching into bootloader. it also takes forever to optimize the 167 apps....
after having read a few threads here and elsewhere i also did 2 recoverys with 0P6BIMG.zip with an miniSD card through bootloader/fastboot and once through htc_fastboot with RUU.zip through the CMD in win10. in all 5 cases the phone tells me it successfully "recovered"/reset its system but it still always starts again with optimizing 167 apps and then beeing stuck on "starting apps...".
the m8 is ***locked*** and S-ON with software status official. OS- 6.12.401.4. i never customized the android os and bought it brand new.

I`ve had a similar issue today, while trying to revert my phone from an update to GPE Rom.
I was able to reboot my phone, and get back to the bootloader, and from there I flashed to a stock rom.
What I did was, volume up + power, and just when the phone turned black, I pushed the volume down button, and it entered the bootloader instantly.
Sorry if it didn`t help you out much, but I was stuck in the updating apps, and was able to get off rebooting loop only like that, I was stuck for about an hour on that!
Good luck!

The OP has a stock device, so the situation is really not similar, nor have the same solution.
In addition, what the OP neglected to post here (but posted in another thread) is that his issue was caused by dropping the phone, and going major physical damage. No amount of software fixes is going to help the OP:

What exactly did you try to flash (file name) and flash it how (TWRP, fastboot, etc.).?
What was the original condition? "revert from an update to GPE Rom" really isn't specific enough.
Were you on a GPE ROM, or did you fully convert to GPE using RUU (2 very different things)/ Bootloader screen is black or white?
Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

i didnt drop the phone. a 2.5 kg plate dropped on it. and i also dont think its interior is broken because of that. only the display glass is broken. the phone was working fine for hours until i tried to use the front camera and the camera app froze up. up to that point all functions were normal apart from the visuals of the broken display glass. even the touchpad/digitizer and colours of the display are working at 100%.
because of that frozen camera app i rebooted the phone. thats when it started to bootloop. the bootloader is also working fine. dislay is still working fine. it just wont boot beyond optimizing apps....
the only hardware problem that could be is: if the front camera is mailfuntioning. can it stop the android os from booting? thats the only explanation it could have for a bootloop hardware wise. if thats not the case its purely a software problem

You dropped a 2.5 kg plate on your M8, and caused physical damage also, like the OP? You tried to flash the RUU through htc_fastboot and SD card methods?
Please don't just post you have the "same problem" without giving any details. My experience, that these issues are never exactly the same (simply too many variables: different CIDs, version numbers, causes for the issue) and if you don't give any details, nobody can provide the proper help.
At a minimum, describe what events led to the current condition (and what that condition is), what you've tried (specific steps, file names, etc.) and the specific outcomes (error messages, other outcomes). Also do fastboot getvar all, and post the output (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).
even i had the same prob..i fixed it by wiping the cache partition..
get into bootloader menu ..go to recovery..and then after the red exclamatory sign appears..keep pressing power button and hold and release volume up button..you will get the wipe cache partition option.
do dat and ur phone will reboot
power and volume up press.

Do you realize you responded to a thread that hasn't been active for over 2 years (August 2016)? Worthwhile contribution is always appreciated. But you decided to make this your first post to xda?
