i have been on several roms and when i hit about 250apps+ on my internal memory my apps start to not show up in the app drawer but they are still installed then when i restart the launcher my all my apps will show but then again after 10min its the same thing..my apps start to disappear leaving me with about 20 in there? i have been on gingerbread and ics, is this normal for the sgs2?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
i took sd card out then in twice and phone would not read it until i rebooted my phone now it can see my sd card hence apps are all back as normal. why does my phone kick out the sd card like that?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
By any chance did you change kernels after loading those apps?
in my case my sd card kept un mounting not diminishing in available capacity. yup i did why? im on calkin el29 3.0 and then to flash the modem i did for just in case. Im going to have a little R&R over at the thread to see if it happens to other people. also does the below link could apply to the sgs2 system as well and work as a fix if needed?

I was killing apps with that task killer and i think that's what happened there is no option to exclude apps?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
actually i have the issue again and its not the task killer this time. and its the internel storage not the sd card is there a fix
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Fast Boot option may be the culprit
So, maybe the disappearing apps has nothing to do with storage type (sdcard, internal phone) and task killers?
This is actually a long-standing problem in Android OS, going back at least two years (donkey's years in this technology!)
Something about the interaction of the OS and an sdcard formated for holding apps creates odd behaviours.
Lots of complicated suggestions have been made, including reformatting sdcard, reinstalling ROMs, changing launchers (the one suggested here) and such.
None of these approaches seems really to solve the problem even in most cases.
What seems to be working for me (at least for the last week or so) is the following very simple tweak.
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report anything further on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873670
(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (especially now that the chosen thread no longer is the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)
So I thought this would be helpful because I spent so much time searching and was not able to find an answer. I will post it here to help others who thought their Note 3 was DOA.
Symptoms:
> Upon installation of an app (seemingly random, until several factory resets later I realized it was the same apps for me) it is greyed out and shows sd card symbol
> Trying to launch app would seize up the device and just black screen and force close
> Regardless of factory reset and uninstalling/reinstalling apps, they suffered same issues (other apps were fine)
> Would periodically see the following message:
"Prevention Information. An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorised attempt to access system on your device. It may be safe to delete an application obtained from an unauthorised route. Check now?"
*NOTE: all apps that I was having issues with were via Playstore, not a side loaded one.
Solution:
> After some research and going on a hunch, I finally fixed it by doing the following:
Factory Data Reset
Unchecked 'Verify Apps' option under Settings > General > Security
Dragging KNOX Shortcut to Disable option in app drawer (click and hold icon in app drawer and "Disable" appears on top)
Cleared Data on LookOut Security and re-entered logins
Removed those problematic apps and then reinstalled them
After reinstalling the very same apps giving me issues this whole time, they are now working perfectly. Please note I tried everything under the sun including 2 factory resets and reinstalling/installing from Wifi/Data and nothing worked. It was not a simple parse error or a simple install to sd versus install to device issue. It would happen by default and was not being corrected by any other method than this above. This is what worked for me and it finally solved my issue. I've been seeing a lot of buggy stuff with this Note 3 versus my Note 2 and I feel it's some of this extra crap that Samsung put in the Note 3. I know KNOX is supposed to be great for security, but it will mean nothing if it makes my device lose simple functionality of some apps.
If this helped anyone, feel free to thanks.
Cheers,
So quick update, the issue returned. I think I narrowed it down to a bad sdcard. I didn't think that would attribute to the app issues because I never explicitly installed to sdcard. But it seems at some point the phone tried to store the apps in question on the sd card automatically and that's when they failed. Anyone know if there is an auto apps to sd process on note 3?

I noticed my Sam's Club app was an icon of a grayed out SD card also.

So far after removing my bad sdcard last night I haven't had the strange issue anymore. Actually a lot of the weird things that was happening have seem to subside. *Crosses fingers* hopefully this was my issue the whole time.

The Dreaded "android.process.acore has stopped" Error: Is there a Master List of....
So I got this error withing hours of first turning on my new Galaxy Note last night, and I just figured it was because I disabled an app I shouldn't have. So I reset to factory settings, and everything was fine. Fortunately, I'd saved most of my big media to the SD card.
Today, I got the error again. This time, after wandering the Internet for a while, I was (very haltingly) able to get rid of it by clearing the "Contacts Storage" cache.
Looking online, there are apparently three apps people suggest clearing the cache for to get rid of this error. So, the logical thing to do would be to disable all three apps to prevent the error from ever popping up in the future? The three apps are:
Contacts
Contacts Storage
Downloads
I don't believe I ever make use of any of them, except maybe the Downloads app, depending on how it works. When I download something from Chrome, for example, I always use the ES Downloader w/ ES File Explorer.
So--my question is this: are these three apps safe to disable? And a related question: is there a master list somewhere of the various pre-installed apps Samsung put onto the Note 2014 that are safe to disable? With no app windows active, my note idles with 47% RAM usage which seems excessive to me, and I'd also like to minimize the chance of future errors like the android.process.acore thing.
Of course, I'm also an idiot, so it's entirely possible that the best course of action for me is to just stop talking, stop messing with apps, and just leave everything as-is.

Yes, why not? And I will not say that you or someone else here is an idiot but I never understand this cleaning and killing. I mean like you see, your tablet becomes only instable. And there is really no lag of memory. The note has mostly 3GB which is more then most high-end phones have today and enough. And when the note use this memory then be happy because then the resources are perfectly used.
So, why removing stuff when you can't use the free space?
PS. I never got this exception and I use all 3 apps.
My understanding is that the error is caused not by the app per second, but the update process. Like the data gets corrupted somehow.
Anyway, as for why I want to do this, my understanding is that all of these pre-installed programs are constantly running in the background... which means they're consuming battery power. By disabling some , if I can, I hope to maximize battery charge.
I had that error on boot when installed gravitybox xposed module, just ignore it.
I was able to get rid of the error after several resets, but I'd still like to disable some of these background apps to improve battery and free up some ram.
I thought for sure I saw a master list thing here, somewhere, but the thread must have had some weird title or something because I haven't been able to find it again.

That's not it. It was a list of apps that could be safely disabled via the app manager, no rooting necessary.
I'm not sure if this is an issue with the Pixel 2 XL or an Android OS bug but it's happening on my Pixel 2 XL so I'm adding here.
I have the Google Play Store app set to automatically update apps when connected to WiFi but apps are not updating. I've been connected to my home wifi for several hours and there are still apps waiting to update.
Anyone else having this issue?

I'm having this issue too....mine doesn't auto update...even when connected to power and wifi.
I have the same problem. I've literally tried everything I could think of.
Yes! Bump! I've actually been having this problem as far back as February (at least that's around when I noticed) and had been meaning to make a thread, but hadn't gotten to it 'til now; and XDA showed this thread when I was creating so, I'll be pleading here...
I, too, FOR THE LIFE of me can't correct this...!
My setup: running Oreo 8.1 May update, rooted, Flash kernel, TWRP 3.2.1-2 custom recovery, a few Magisk modules (see sig).
Troubleshooting: rebooted, plugged phone in, allowed all permissions and ability to modify system settings, I've changed it to auto-update apps "at any time" (both mobile data & wi-fi), when updating to May patch I wiped the System partition and flashed the May Full Factory image, cleared Play Store app cache, cleared Play Store app data, uninstalled Play Store updates, Disabled Play Store - then Enabled, uninstalled Google Play Services updates / reset to factory version, and finally manually updated Google Play Services.
Anyone, any thoughts/ideas/advice?! I had hoped the last 3 months' security patch updates might fix this, but since it hasn't, my last hope is here...! :begging:
P.S. I am hoping that flashing a full factory image with the -w intact/included is not the last and only option...

I've said it before that, for me at least, I've noticed it only auto updates when plugged in even if I have plenty of battery like greater than 50%. I'm set to auto update on WiFi only. I'll go into the app store and see I have a handful of update, plug in, and see them to start downloading.

I eventually noticed as well that it only updates when plugged in. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with how charged the battery is but I haven't looked too closely at that.
....yea...I've also plugged in as well, i'll edit to reflect that...
...BUT I think I'm onto something...does anyone/everyone that has this problem have Titanium Backup installed and running btw???
Same, only auto updates when plugged in...
I always have Titanium which is running normally... Awesome app!
Yea...I get that apps are really only automatically updating when plugged in. But assuming even that isn't allowing apps to automatically update....
i'm more wondering if @upperbladez and @smokeythebear3 have Titanium Backup installed; as that's what was stopping the updating the apps automatically....

Yeah...I had really high hopes earlier as well, but found that it wasn't TB. Because there is a setting in the preferences that deals with auto-updating and it seems that, by default, it sets it to Disabled, but even after Enabling it, it hasn't gotten auto-update to work.
I had inadvertently thought it worked because, at the same time as the TB discovery, I reset to factory settings both Google Play Store and Google Play Services (as I have many times before). This seems to have the auto-update work once, but I can't get it to replicate or do it again after this first initial time. Also, it's hard to debug, troubleshoot, and test because I have to wait some time for a number of apps to need updating before I can see if it truly works or not.
I hope someone has an idea or thought that might explain why or help reach an explanation...

Yeah it's so agitating?
I think I figured it out....[GUIDE] included!
I think I figured it out (at least in my case) -- but I think it's probably applicable to most any other(s) who are having the same issue...
First of all, if you have Titanium Backup, make sure to set Default auto-update app to Enabled
Go to Menu
Preferences
Go to Restoration Settings
You will find Default auto-update mode in the section; 4th on the list within that section
Go to Google Play Store App Info
Clear Cache (inside Storage)
Clear Data (also inside Storage)
Disable the app
Click OK when warned that it will "replace this app with the factory version..."
Go to Settings, Apps & Notifications, See all ### apps
At the top right, select the 3 verticle dots and select "Show system"
Find and select Google Play Services
Clear Cache
Go back to App Info (back arrow; arrow pointing left), at the top right, select the 3 vertical dots and select "Uninstall updates"
Click OK when warned that it will "replace with the factory version..."
Reboot
Download the latest Google Play Services
HERE'S one place you can find it and/or you can Google search to find other copies yourself...
Pick the newest latest version (beta if you wish to be on bleeding edge but stability not ensured)
Choose the Android 8.0+ variant
Download the "arm64 + arm" & "nodpi" one
Install the latest Google Play Services using the file you downloaded
Reboot
Go back to Google Play Services App Info (show all ### apps, show system, etc.)
Clear Cache (of Google Play Services)
Go back to "show all ### apps"
Select the drop-down menu and select Disabled
Select Google Play Store
Clear Cache and Data (of Google Play Store inside Storage)
Plug Phone to charger
Launch Google Play Store
Select the 3 stacked horizontal lines on the top left and go to Settings
Select and configure how you wish to auto-update apps
Click on Play Store version (all the way on the bottom)
After pressing OK (it'll most likely say Play Store will update soon), it may or may not begin downloading components for the Play Store. After a bit, it may or may not actually begin auto-updating...
In the few instances I've done this and on the 2 pixel 2's I have access to, the auto-updating may begin soon after (within 2 minutes), or eventually (sorry for vague description, but I had thought these steps didn't work and wasn't paying attention and after a while, I saw it auto-updating!).
Also, it still seems that it'll auto-update only while plugged in charging. That particular bug/requirement hasn't been resolved, but as this is specifically an auto-update troubleshooting thread.......
Hope this helps any/all who is having the same issue. I hope (but am doubtful) that this will work for everyone; but if it doesn't, I'd have to say that it might be something with your ROM (stock or custom), settings (system or another app interfering [As I found out TB actually might/does]), or some very unique bug because this is probably the most comprehensive app reset for Google Play. It's kind of overkill, but you might have some luck going the "last resort" route and flashing the Full Factory image in hopes it'll fix the system and app comparability issues (if that is indeed the reason...).
In the end, I hope this helps any who might be having this issue....:victory::highfive:
I have this same issue. I tried wiping Google Play cache/data and had a hell of a time getting it to show my installed apps after that. I don't have TB installed so I'm not really sure what's going on. It's a PITA having to manually update apps all the time.

Yeah....but maybe uninstalling Google Play store (not just cache and data and actually reverting to an older version) and doing the same (sorta) towards Google Play Services is the critical difference (as shown in my guide)... Hopefully that sorts ya out...!:good:

I'm set to auto update over WiFi, and I've never actually paid attention.. but my apps are always updated and I get the notification stating that 13 apps were updated... So it must be working on my end?
EDIT: Not sure if it would make a diff, but I am running latest DU...

Yes, that's "the dream" . For us/me, that wasn't happening -- for whatever reason; whether it was set to do it over WiFi or both mobile & WiFi.
I used to not pay attention either, until I went and checked and kept finding a list of 50+ apps needing to update and/or all these apps were outdated every 3 or so days! Then I realized I hadn't been getting that which you are experiencing... And, as @corywf as stated, it can get quite tedious and annoying having to manually "Update all" every few days just to keep all the apps up-to-date! (Curious note: I never realized how many times in a small number of days certain apps actually update; it's like every 2 days! Which is nice and good to say towards the app as the devs are continuously working on it -- Instagram, Nextdoor, and Chrome come to mind -- but certainly rather annoying when manually "keeping up") Especially when we've all experienced these things happening automatically and in the background...
I had this issue since the Feb or March update I think but since flashing the May update, apps are back to updating automatically

That's good! I believe it was around the same time I noticed the issue as well (although as said in my last post, this is usually something that is in the background and done automatically so I can only say it was around this point). I'm glad flashing the latest update worked -- I'm wondering, did you flash a Full Factory or an OTA? -- and hopefully it works for others. But, unfortunately, I had Full Factory flashed to the May update with no such luck. It took my guide (a little up above) to fix it on me and my gf's Pixel 2 (non-XL)...
Cheers! :highfive::victory::good:
I have the Verizon version of the Moto Z2 Play, which no one has figured out how to root. About every four months or so, the internal memory gets so low that I have to perform a factory reset, then reinstall all of my apps. Google Backup does not back up everything, so I have to spend five hours or so getting everything reconfigured. I assume that this steady dwindling of storage is due to accumulated log files. Does anyone know a quicker way to clear these logs on an unrooted phone? The cleanup utilities I have tried, such as AVG Cleanup, don't resolve this issue.
Sent from my XT1710-02 using Tapatalk
Well, first of all it's plain impossible to root a Verizon device if you can't figure out a way to guess the unlock code. The times that Android itself could be rooted without something like an unlocked bootloader are long ago and methods through download modes are too difficult.
Second of all, as long as you didn't enable some very Experimental debugging feature in developer settings it's impossible that log files could clogg your memory, at least if you don't use to have your memory up to 99% full to begin with.
So either you have some app that downloads a huge amount of data that you are not aware of or some some app is going crazy in the background (since a full storage would only be something that you will notice when you get according notifications).
So you first of all have to figure out what actually bugs down your devices performance.
Disabled anything you might have enabled on developer options
Monitor apps RAM usage from dev options -> memory and running services. I know people always say unused RAM is wasted RAM, but what that small minded view leaves out of that you can find apps going crazy when they use a huge/unusual amount of RAM
See if you can find out how much memory is used by what data. Even though the systems view is broken on pretty much any Moto ROM, there should be Apps that are able to display that.
Find apps wasting battery with apps like GSam battery monitor, another way to find apps and process going crazy
Keep in mind you might have a hardware issue. If you have faulty memory it's possible you won't be able to fix it. That can only be fixed by formatting partitions to detect and disable faulty flash cells. I'm not sure if factory reset can do that and what you can achieve with stock recovery mode
