I can happen when I am pushing the Home key or even when I am just browsing XDA (or anything else). The Home key vibrates like 5 times, as if I had touched it 5 times. It makes the device almost useless when this happens. Is this a firmware problem perhaps? I hadn't noticed it happening prior to the latest update that I got within the last week.
Am I the only one that's having this happen?

I don't know how it started but my Tilt 2 keeps falling asleep (screen off) after 5 seconds. This happens whether it is plugged in or on battery. The only way to stop it is to open Google Maps (I think Google Maps prevents sleeping on purpose) but as soon as Google Maps looses focus (even opening the Google Maps menu), after 5 seconds the phone goes back to sleep.
I have turned off all the power settings to no avail. I have been using SU2U lock for over a month with no problems. The last change to the phone was installing Gyrator about a week ago but this still occurs even with Gyrator not running.
Help!
One additional bit of info. It goes to sleep even if the phone is not idle. I could be in the middle of clicking something and then...LIGHTS OUT!
are you accidentally hitting the power button by any chance, particularly when the hardware keyboard is out, this is happening to a lot of people
(there is a cab fix for this by h andy)
edit... i just noticed you said its happening at 5 second intervals. obviously that cant be the power button issue.
Mine did too
My tilt 2 was doing the same thing.
I was worried that I had a bad phone.
I was on NRG's 4 dec 21XXX when this was happening. I reflashed twice, and still the same problem.
Reflashed to the 10 DEC 21XXX and it went away (well as for one day that is)
Phew!!!
Ugh. I was hoping reflashing wasn't the solution. I am still using the stock ROM with a bunch of software installed.
At least I am not crazy. Someone else is having the same problem on their Diamond 2.

I have found that the placement of the lights out button is very very bad for typing with the physical keyboard, I am still relearning how to keep my knuckle away from it.
Update on this problem. I removed Smart Lock and soft resetted a few times. So far so good.
I am not accidentally hitting the sleep button.
Issue: Power button won't turn screen off. Either it doesn't respond to the button push at all or it treats it as a long press and will pop up the phone options menu. Power button wakes phone just fine. Also, if I boot into recovery while experiencing this, not all power button pushes register within recovery (ouch).
It's weird because I experienced this for the first time like 2 months ago a few hours after flashing a Tiamat kernel (actual kernel may have had nothing to do with it), but after fiddling around with my phone it started working again.
Well, it started happening again on Saturday using CM 7.0.3.1 w/ GoDm0dE v5. I got it to work again by doing a factory reset, then restoring a backup. Well, it came back last night and persisted after another factory reset. It was very consistent today -- for hours it would either do nothing after pressing power or it would pop up phone options. Finally, a did a factory reset within CM7 and also within Amon-RA 2.3 and then restored a backup from yesterday and the power button functioned properly for about 1.5 hours.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?
ROM: CM 7.0.3.1
Kernel: Stock
Recovery: Amon_Ra 2.3
HW: 003
Never had that experience. Could be a number of things. It might be the Kernel/ROM mix, the Kernel itself, the ROM itself...But I would think that if it was any of these things, I would have heard about it by now from other users.
It could be something as simple as a short in your power button or the connections underneath it. Might just short out at the right times to make you think it is something you are flashing. Try shooting some compressed air in there (might help).

Thanks -- I actually tried the compressed air. I'm thinking it's hardware. It seems to have gotten worse in the past hour.
im having the same issue. i googled it earlier and it seems like theres alot of people have that same problem. its looking like a hardware issue. I can tell you one thing tho its pissing me off.

I unrooted and it actually started to do the same, but when waking the device. Brought it into Sprint and getting a replacement on Wednesday.
Had this exact same issue up until a few days ago. I took a needle and went around the power button front and back, something unjammed I guess and now it works like a charm. I've also had this with a software problem. My power button wouldn't work, even in recovery. I restored a nandroid and this fixed it. Hope this helps! Best of luck.
I had the same issue. Sprint said it wasn't the button but the board not responding to the button. Got a new phone.

I have installed CM 10.1. Occasionally the screen will not turn on when I press the power button. I have to hold down the button for 10-20 seconds to reset the device to get it to power on. Happens at least 3-4 times a day. Anyone else have this issue or ideas on how to fix it? Thanks.

No one else has seen this issue?
Many ROMs have their little quirks here and there, this could be one. I use hashcode's ROMs so this is just speculation though.
I had this issue with twa_priv's rom. If I keep at the button, pushing it multiple times at different intervals, it would eventually come on. Interestingly, if I went into the developer options and put the CPU at the full 1200MHz, it didn't happen.
Not having this issue with CM (though I'm running 10.2) so not sure there.
This was a common occurrence in cm10.1 with TWA_priv's build I believe. This is called a Sleep of Death or SoD. I thought that was cleared up, but maybe not. If there is a newer version of the ROM that you are on, I recommend trying that. There is no way to recover from an SoD except to force power off like you did, and start back up.

My S3 is running stock 4.4.2 and isn't rooted (though it has been in the past). At times my phone will not wake up after the screen turns off.
I have to pull the battery to get it to work again. This doesn't happen all the time, but it can happen 5 or 6 times a day. This has been
happening for about 4 months. I did a factory reset and the same thing happens. There is no rhyme or reason to when this happens.
I have read a bunch of posts about this, but there seems to be no definitive answer. Some say do a factory reset, which I did. Some say
it is the version of Android they have, but this goes back a couple of years and everyone is on different versions of Android.
As a habit, I always press the power button to turn off the screen so I do not make any pocket calls. To use the phone, I press the power
button again, or the home button to wake it up.
The phone is 2 1/2 years old and except for this glitch, it has worked flawlessly.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ian
Just a guess, but probably a faulty power switch. It happens fairly often, but usually displays different symptoms than yours. It would be the first thing I'd focus on though since it's very unlikely it's software/firmware related.

My thoughts too are that it is an hardware issue rather than firmware. Had a similar problem once and it turned out to be the power button. However, with a device of this vintage, you can never be too sure.
Good luck!
Last night I set up Watch On - the samsung remote control for TV and STB's, and suddenly the tablet went to a black screen with a white folder option on the left bottom corner and the apps folder icon in the right corner. Infrequently it would flash to the 3rd home page that only had the Guardian news app on (which could also be seen on the black screen), but the screen was non responsive.
Tried turning off (holding power for 10 secs or more), but it didn't respond. Also when holding the power button for a second to get the restart/power off options, as the screen was non responsive they didn't do anything either.
Thought it had bricked itself! Not rooted, totally standard.
Eventually using google found the power, home and volume down action and after 15 secs or so it restarted. Then had an occassional error stating 'set up is not responding'...even though it does!
Can the device be reinstalled using kies? Even if a problem is not identified? I'm slightly concerned by this as never seen anything like this before. Was it just a glitch or likely to be something more severe requiring a return to shop?
thanks
It might of been an app/tablet freeze or some sort. My tab s froze once and I waited 10 minutes for it to respond and it did. So I restarted it and everything has been working fine. It could be that you were low on ram. If it happens again it could be the software in which you have to reinstall/update with kies. If that doesnt work then I would take it to get fix since it could be defective.
how do you reinstall through kies? I can see options for failed installs but not replacing existing installions? I guess a factory reset is worthy first?

I would a factory reset. I forget how to do it with kies and theres videos on youtube to do so. Are you on the latest update?
ok I'll try that first - hate factory resets as it never reinstalls it with the same settings! (using nova...)
