I installed Snapdragon Battery Guru from the Play Store. Good reports about it from people who use it on other Snapdragon powered devices
DS Battery Saver works wonders! With it I can easily get a day and a half of battery life under moderate use. Disabling location services will save your battery marginally also.
I used better battery stats and found out carrier IQ was waking the phone out of deep sleep the most... and quite often. since I disabled carrier IQ I have had much better battery life
You will need root, and a file explorer, go to /system/app and there are 3 files that begin with "IQ", at the end of those files add ".bak"
so it would be IQiforgotthefilename.apk.bak
do that for all 3 files, reboot, and now your phone wont be woken out of deeps sleep nearly as often

What is carrier iq for, what does it do? Is it for the tmobile name I'd?
Does everything else still work fine after you disabled it?
Instead of doing that can I freeze it through titanium?

It basically track you so they know how better to sell stuff to customers. There is no need for it. And some people are understandably very upset that it's even on phones.
I found the info on how to disable carrier is on another forum post. And apparently even if you freeze it, it will still activate if the apks are in system folder. If you add the .bak, it makes it so those files in a way no longer exist, but if for some reason you wanted to restore them, just remove the .bak and reboot. It will be like you never did anything.

Carrier IQ. sounds familiar.
Or you can use an app called "greenify" from the App Store. If you use Titinium Backup, change some system apps into user apps then have "Greenify" snooze them.

Wasn't being sarcastic. Hitting my note 3 into gsm mode prolongs the battery even further. When at home in use wifi so this tip was perfect for me currently got 20 hours with 64% juice left.

If you get good hspa signal in your area, it is probably better to use wcdma mode only. Umts is very efficient and edge/GPRS are rumored to get refarmed in the next couple of years by at&t and T-Mobile. Believe it when I see it though.

Please help....
I have read many threads about this, but I don't understand any of them. My battery life is horrible, I am only using it for the occasional phone call, texting and checking my email. It's very frustrating because when I need to use it, the battery is dead (or almost dead and I can't use the camera).
I don't understand all the lingo on here about what version "this" and "that" everyone is using. Downloading certain apps to fix this.....
I'm not very techy and just use my phone for basic things.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Suggestions:
Turn off bluetooth until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn off GPS until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn screen brightness to automatic or lowest setting (your preference).
Turn off 4G receiver if you are out of range or just don't have 4G coverage in your area.
Turn off synchronization if you don't care for email, Facebook, Twitter, etc updates. (Not really necessary if your update interval isn't set for short intervals.)
Utilize Wifi as much as possible, if that is an option available to you. BUT turn it off when you know you will be out of range for a good bit of time.
Toggle Airplane mode after each phone reboot. (Stupid bug)
Utilize the TouchWiz program manager (long press on home screen and under Samsung widgets).
Kill the OmaDrmConfigService process via Settings > Applications > Running Services. (This appears again with each phone reboot, unless you find a process killer application in the market.)
If you use Wifi a good bit, it's a good idea to set your Wifi sleep policy to "Never". You can access this via Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings: Press menu and select Advanced > Wifi Sleep Policy. Setting to never will not revert back to 3G when you turn off your phone's display as long as wifi is still turned on and within that connected wifi signal range.
If you still get **** battery life, then you can download Spare Parts or BatteryHistory from the market. BatteryHistory is a ripped out piece from Spare Parts, which is really all you need to diagnose your issue.
OR if you don't want to install anything you can key in via the dialer: *#4636*1111# to get to the same menu that both programs above display. (The menu is labeled Battery History.)
From another battery thread that pertains to the two aforementioned programs:

Did deleting the android folder work or anyone else? I'm trying to see how that can help but if it does good find.
I have no ideawhy but after flashing a few times testing themes on dk28 my battery tanks and my gallery gets slow. The album thumb folder inside there is what fixes the gallery so I usually delete it but I got lazy and deleted my whole folder since it regenerates on boot and my battery came back. Ben deleting it since lol but I flash a lot

Try this:
-Toggle airplane mode every time you reboot. You probably have a "time without signal" of over 50% if you look in settings. Toggling airplane mode resets the radio and so it doesn't keep looking for signal unnecessarily which kills battery
-Gps on doesn't drain battery, only when its being used by an app
-Turn off background data and auto sync. If you don't have facebook/twitter widgets or care about email push notifications then save some power and switch it off.
-Check for apps that aren't letting the phone sleep. Download "spare parts" and it should show you.
-I'm guessing you have the updated Facebook app with chat. I would suggest going offline in chat because it doesn't let the phone sleep and will drain your battery really fast.

Hey guys so my friend join my line on verizon on a family plan and he really wanted the nexus he likes it i can tell it , however he asked me today why with minimal usage 11% of battery dies within 2 hours
he is on stock 4.0.2 what can i suggest him to have a better battery life? of course i rooted mine but its his choice and he does not want to.
what i suggested
1) lower brightness when not really using the phone
2) get easy batter saver
3) turn off gps when not needed
4) turn off sync when not needed
5) switch TO CDMA from LTE when "LTE" not needed
what else?
Freeze maps when not using. And make sure you clear apps runing in the background when your not using them. Push the multi task softkey and swipe whatever is open to the side

wait... as in he loses only 11% of battery in 2 hours? That's really solid battery life for an LTE version...
All stock the most you should probably expect is 3 hours screen on time over the entire battery usage.

you can disable it when you're stock. go into the app info (drag Maps from app drawer to the "info" icon or go from settings) and uninstall updates then disable it.
Or if you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup to "freeze" applications. It just disables them and you can bring them back later.
Honestly, there's really no need to do this if you use Maps at all. Its a hassle and really doesn't save any battery life unless you have a buggy ROM that keeps it running. Just make sure that you're signed out of latitude etc. and Maps won't be draining battery.
There are so many more things you can do to help battery life than worry about Maps.
OP I'd like if you could clarify what you mean in your first post. If he really only drained 11% in 2 hours that's really good for this device. Most LTE users with normal usage and settings can get about 12-15 hours uptime with 3 hours screen on.
The things you noted in your first post are all good ways to save battery but remember its a trade off! You're going to remove everything that makes your smartphone useful to try and lengthen your battery. I leave auto-sync and background data on, GPS on (it actually only turns on when you use it, btw), and just let it be. I do better on battery life when I stop trying to micromanage my phone.
Apps like Juice Defender etc. really can help in specific situations, but for most people it will hurt or have no effect on battery life, but will severely inconvenience you turning on/off data all the time and changing settings.
well he gave me an estimate (basically he said around 2 hours 11%) hes coming from iPhone 4 so there is huge battery performance 3g vs 4g
anyways he will have to stick with it
on another hand my rooted gnex does pretty good about 14 hours with franco kernel
i was just wondering which kernel governor is the best?
mine is set as FRANCO TURTLE and i have no idea what is the difference between other ones
Root it and flash 4.04 it will give you battery life for a day with moderately heavy usage.
Buy the extended battery.
Confirm the following option is unchecked:
Maps/Settings/Location settings/Report from this device.
If it is checked, uncheck it.
Here's the difference in battery life -
About half the battery drain with the option unchecked.
Thanks for the tip

What are you talking about? Did you zoom in to see screen on/awake usage? Both are about 7.5 hours of idle time.
I updated my phone to JB and followed the battery saving measures and the battery is dropping very quickly.
Before it could last up to 3 days in standby, now I'll be surprised if it lasts 8 hours.
I'll give it another day then try a factory reset if it does not improve.
Anybody else seeing this?
I have watchdog on the phone and it shows zero cpu off time.
Just install better battery stats, there is also a way to dump the same info in terminal but I don't use it. You are looking for alarms apps cause. It's most likely maps, followed by talk, exchange client, or anything like Twitter, FB,g+,stocks.... but most likely maps location settings

You are pretty much correct the FB app sucks but I never really had much problems with it.
A lot of these tips though in general (not directed towards you) are stupid.
Like someone said a while ago I refuse to gimp my phone to sip a little bit more life out of it. What's the use of having a smartphone if you're not going to use it like one.
I always have high brightness unless its dark out. I broke my syncs intervals up to about 4 hours per sync and have push notifications from twitter and weather.
With those apps all I have to do is refresh when I enter the app having those syncing all the time is worthless unless you're constantly checking every 10 seconds.
I say I get fairly decent battery life granted I'm on wifi most the time and 7-8 hours with about 2 hrs screen on playing HD games youtube poweramp and my background processes.
Well in regards to the act of extending the life of your battery these are simply tips that you can utilize in the event you are someone who is out for extreme amounts of time.... I average anywhere from 13 to 17 hrs of battery life with 100% brightness, wifi 3g all of my favorite apps... instagram xda kik kindle Skype etc. And 5 to 6 hrs of screen on time. .. so these gimping tactics more than double my phones live time and doubles my life.... but hey if you can get to a charger after 8hrs by all means but for the most part I cannot until after 13 but i do in fact appreciate your incite

Even with changing that setting in Maps I still am not getting the same battery life as I did with ICS. Maps is still coming up as my most used app when I check battery usage even though I rarely use it. Wonder if it may be Google Now causing Maps to keep running.

Oh wow. Sorry from my phone I couldn't zoom in. I see now lol. Thought I saw 90 and 89 or something like that
I had the Maps setting turned off for a few days and also had A LOT of stuff disabled, but unfortunately my battery life (and my wife's as well) wasn't as good as ICS, and quite a bit worse actually.
Sadly, today, it looks like I figured out what the killer is:
Google Now.
This morning, 100% charged, I turned it off. My wife (who still had it on) and I were out and about together for about four hours, we both barely used out phones for that time. When we got home I checked both phones: I was at 96%, she was at 80%.
The only difference that I hadn't already accounted for:
Google Now.
So, unfortunately, it looks to me like one of the two biggest reasons for wanting JB in the first place (Butter being the other of course) turns out to be a big battery hog I don't yet know if there's maybe some setting within it that is a specific problem or if it's the whole thing in general... maybe you just need to disable a card or change an update frequency or something (I didn't touch any so I'm running whatever the defaults are), I don't know yet... but all indications are that's where the problem lies.
That, my friends, sucks.
Well since my phone has calmed down I am getting 13-16 hr easily. Brightness maxed of course and about 4-6 screen on time I will never cripple my phone. Hell I bought it so I can use not to look at. Lol thanks for the post of this though if I'm ever I. A die hard , situation I'll know what to do

Google Now uses the "Report from this device" and "Enable location history" maps location settings to determine your driving patterns so it can suggest alternative routes and report traffic delays. Disabling "Enable location history" will disable the driving pattern suggestions completely.
FWIW Settings | More settings | Mobile networks | Network mode
Changing from "CDMA" to "LTE / CDMA" has gained me better battery life. My wife also noticed the same.
(To save time, I'm cutting & pasting my post from another similar thread.)

"I have had my Galaxy S3 for a week now. Battery life stabilized after the initial syncing, etc. I updated to Jelly Bean v4.1.1 two days ago, and battery life didn't seem noticeably different. However, that was until today. My phone was off of the charger, around 10AM, and had < 5% charge by 4:30PM. I was very busy, so I was hardly using the phone all day. It was in my pocket or on my desk most of the time. One of the only settings I changed last night, was enabling 'Use wireless networks' and enabling 'Location and Google search' under 'Location Services' in 'Settings'. I just disabled both settings, and will see if the battery drain is any less tomorrow. Also, Google Now was off, and was never enabled on my phone. I'll try to post the results, if at all possible..."
So, for me, it seems to be Location Services may have caused my poor battery life, and was definitly not Google Now, as it was never enabled. I'll try using the phone with the settings off, and see if that changes anything...

I do love Jelly Bean; as it is ICS only improved or enhanced. But battery life has definitely taken a hit. I can barely make it through 24 hrs. On ICS I could do a day and a half to two days with really light use. I've tried just about everything mentioned with little change. Good thing I have an extra battery. Thank you Samsung for making a phone with a user replaceable battery.
Thanks for all the ideas/suggestions anyways,

I noticed the huge difference as well. I was walking around Chicago yesterday and not using my phone. After 4 hours I looked and my battery was at 50 %.

Hi All,
I would like to invite your suggestions on best battery saving apps that you are using and how much difference does it make. Is it worth paying for apps juice defender ultimate or so http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/advanced/battery_full.png
I am on stock (rooted) 4.2.1 and stock rom.
Thanks!
Best battery saver is your self. These apps don't work any better than you doing the things it does manually. If its using resources which they all do to "save" you battery... Its not really saving you battery.. But in fact using it.
Some tips I suggest:
Turn sync off in everything. Go to data usage hit the menu button and uncheck auto sync data. Also you will want to open apps that have notifications and make sure they aren't syncing either.
Remove maps if you don't use it or disable it at the very least this will keep it from polling your location and wake locking the device.
Keep your running apps to a minimum and force stop any unnecessary apps.
Turn off Google backup services. Sometimes this will be pulling and pushing data wake locking the device and using battery. I've never found it necessary especially since I use TiBu anyways for my apps to restore. It never saves my WiFi password either.

This isn't particularly good advice in my opinion. Are there apps that do use battery power when you don't force close them? Yes, sure, but many don't. And those which do without a good reason.. try to find a replacement.
Force closing apps all the time especially on a device with lots of ram will mean that your device has to restart the app completely if you open it again, which takes time and energy.
edit:
Also, turning off sync doesn't really help that much if you still use your apps often but instead refresh manually with the screen on, I'd expect. Of course everyone can decide for themselves, but one of the reasons I own a smartphone is because it can notify of an incoming email or something without me having to go to gmail.com manually. It all very much depends on what you want from your phone and how much you are willing to compromise. Using an App like Lux for example could also save you some battery depending on how bright you need your screen to be etc. There are so many variables to this.
Best battery saver is to not run crappy battery hogging apps like juice defender.
Turn on auto brightness, check your apps and make sure you are not syncing very often unless you need it. For most apps you can turn off auto sync and probably sync manually. I just turn on auto sync for handful of important apps which I open regularly.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Manually turn down screen brightness, don't leave the Wifi or bluetooth on when you're not connected, make sure apps you install aren't keeping the phone awake. Not much else actually works in the real world.

I get two and a half days from my Nexus 4 battery, I can thank Juice Defender Ultimate for a large part of that.
I could do all the tricks that Juice Defender does manually, but it would be a PITA and I'm sure I'd forget some of those tricks.
Better to pay a few quid, take a little time to set up Juice Defender, then sit back and enjoy your doubled battery life.
the best part of Juice Defender was turning off Wifi when not at home.. if you like this feature, search the playstore for 'Y5 Battery Saver'. It does the same thing, is simple and free..
Note: dont backup and restore it in titanium though. If you rebuild, install from the playstore. I have found it doesn't work right if restored
IMO if all you want is bt/wifi to toggle when you aren't home spend $5 on a few nfc stickers and stick one by your front door. You could also go with tasker.
As for battery life, francos kernel is giving me 2 days of battery (far more than I need) with wifi/bt on, whatever apps need to sync do so and I have brightness set to auto.
I found juice defender good for phones that are bloated with crapware and not rooted. It hurt battery life when i used it for phones with custom roms and kernels.

After I turned 'Google location' and NFC off, this thing can easily last the day with average use. Before that it was just draining like crazy.

I've had juice defender ultimate since my Nexus S days. I wouldn't be without it as I can't get my battery to last a full day without it. When it's fully configured correctly, it works fantastic. I especially like that I can configure wifi to turn on and off automatically in areas where I have a saved wifi. I can decide the interval I choose for syncing data, and there are many other features. I'm not going to be manually turning on and off functions all the time, all that does is create more screen on time and is a waste of my time.
Bottom line, for me juice defender ultimate works because I spent time configuring it properly for my usage.

What's the screen on time though?
I can easily get 2 days of battery if I don't use my phone at all.

1.5 hrs screen on, 1.5hrs on call...I got close to 6hrs screen on when I did a drain test.
And no, I wasn't getting 2 days out of the phone stock with the same usage, it was more like 12-18hrs.
I tried using Juice Defender on a different phone and all it did was make the phone buggy with problems with wifi connectivity and other minor irritations and I could never configure it in such a way that didn't give me problems.
Are you having trouble making it through the day on one charge? I don't think I could use my N4 that much if I tried, I sat in a doctor's office the other day for 2.5 hours listening to Pandora on a bluetooth headset while reading a book with the screen on and still made it until I turned in for the night. Perhaps it is the Trinity kernel or custom ROM I am running, I never ran my phone stock so I don't have anything to compare with. I guess some of you want to go longer than 24 hours but it would be a really bizarre situation for me to need to do that.
So I tried juice defender ultimate and it did significantly increased my battery life. I am now getting about 30 hours or more with my regular usage. Even right now I have 63% remaining battery with 1 hour screen time and 17 hours total run time, see screenshot for usage.

When I first got the Note 5 last week, I noticed the battery life wasn't so great. After making some tweaks I've noticed that 1) Android system isn't the number one thing eating up my battery 2) Cell standby isn't consuming more battery than my screen anymore and 3) Screen is the number one thing consuming battery and I'm getting fantastic screen on time. The first attached pic shows stats from my phone being off the charger for almost 8 hours and I was connected to my wireless earbuds via bluetooth and streaming pandora for almost 4 hours while traveling to and from the gym and during my workout (all over the network, no wifi but when I'm home or in the office, I'm always on wifi) plus I had about 1 1/2 hours of SOT. The Second pic is day 2 with 1 day and 2 hours of use with 37% still left and 3 hours of SOT. Also, I have Google Now running, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter constantly running and I maybe lose 1% battery life every hour or longer when I'm not using the phone.. I'd like to thank @rlsroufe for his debloat list because that was a big starting point.. Here's what I did:
-Disable AT&T/Samsung Bloat (Package Disabler Pro)
-Disable S Finder (Package Disabler Pro)
-Turn off motion Gestures
-Turn off S voice
-Turn off or decrease vibrations
-Turn off Google Location History (Huge battery drain, causes play service and/or Android system to go nuts)
-Turn off Android Device manager (Lock Screen and Security —> Device Admin)(Also causes play service drain)
-Disable Unnecessary Sync Service
-If you use Adguard, turn it off when you don't actually need it and just flip the switch when you do
-Turn off S pen Alerts, pen detection, and S pen sound and vibration (will still work exactly the same)
-Turn off Enhance4GLTE (basically voice over LTE, makes cell standby consume a lot of battery)
-Turn off 'Always allow scanning' under advanced wifi settings (Allows apps to serach for Wifi even when wifi is off)
Reboot and enjoy..

I think it was sarcasm.
I had posted this in another thread, but using package disabler to disable "s-finder" seemed to have made a large difference in battery for me. I (personally) usually keep location services and android device manager active, however.
One thing common with many android phones is that for the first couple of days after you first get the phone (or factory reset it), location services tends to draw more power when compared to after you've had it a while. I have nothing to confirm this (and I've been too lazy to try and verify it), but I suspect that location services keeps a cache of cell phone tower locations... so the drain would be higher while its still building up that cache.
Yeah I feel like disabling S finder helped as well.. I consider that samsung bloat as well but I'll add that to the list, thanks. I keep location service on as well but I turn off location history which is what I think was causing stuff to go nuts and def noticed a difference right away. Device manager I don't really use because I noticed if you factory reset your phone via the phone recovery, you still have to sign into your google account before you can do anything with it so that's nice.
Yeah that sounds like a logical theory and could very well be what was draining battery. But literally 2 hours after turning off Enhance4gLTE, cell standby dropped and noticed battery life was a lot better. There's been a few threads on that as well as VoLTE (tmo equivalent) that suggest that's the issue for drain as well.

Can you share your disabled list in Package Disabler Pro please?
Got this via @rlsroufe and @mcdavid
FYI - There's an Extreme (left column) and Basic (right column), I just went with the Basic one. Green Means I left it alone, Orange means I disabled it and Yellow means you can but don't have to. This is for the Tmo variant so some things wont be on this list so I just went one by one and did it just by typing in the last word of the application. Anything that I actually used I left alone but you can mix and match if you want and see what works best for you.

Okay.. So Samsung made this SUPER ambiguous.. But the "Disable Pen Detection" setting.. Are you saying that that toggle needs to be ON or OFF? What does the setting do anyways? I can't understand Samsung's wording in the settings..
Lol yeah, there was a big discussion in anther thread about that. Putting it in the 'Off' position turns it off which is what you want.. I believe it just turns off the feature when you walk away from your s pen and it warns you.. I could be wrong tho but since doing it, nothing has changed with the S pen and it all works the same exact way when I pull the s pen out

Haha, I think there's a setting for what you described (other than pen detection) but have you noticed the battery life is better when that setting is turned off? Or is it not noticeable?
I'm not 100% sure because I did everything pretty much at once. It does say it might help save battery so that was enough for me. Everything has been working great so far tho, finished charging my phone around 12 today, left it for 2 1/2 hours and didn't lose a percent even tho FB, Email, App update and Text messages were coming in so I think it's a combination of everything

Actually leaving it in on position turns off pen detection which saves battery. I am rooted, checked with SQL editor.

So what is the verdict? Off or on?
LOL says in my settings for this "turning off pen detection when the pen is attached can extend battery life".
So i turned mine OFF
My secret is leaving it charging all day, all night, all day etc. That's the only way.

Based on rlsroufe's SQL dump, the option should be ON which disables pen detection.
When you pull the pen out and the phone no longer 'sees' it, it uses the motion detector to see if you are walking away. If you go like 12 steps you get an alert.
Turning this option ON, disables this detection when the pen is attached to the phone.
Hey @oka1 can you please close this thread or disable the comments. I will no longer be supporting it because I no longer have this phone. Thank you
