[Q] Storage card erased! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I have a message that the storage card is empty or there is an unsupported file, and it asks if I want to format.
When I go into the gallery, the "camera" album no longer exists.
If I use Astro file manager, I can browse to several folders with files (but not my camera album). My camera was set save on the sd card and I previously had a bunch of pictures on there.
Now the camera does not even give me an option to save to storage card. It's just set to internal with no option to change that. It's like the camera doesn't recognize the sd card, even though Astro sees it (doesn't find any of the pictures taken with this device, but shows everything else).
This is the T-Mobile GS4 with the stock ROM.
I did recently reset the camera permissions (and all other permissions) in Opera Classic, do you think that might have something to do with it?
Anyone have any experience with this?
This might be my excuse to go get the note 3.

Don't format it. Try unmounting and re-mounting it. I got that message a few times on my s4 and there was never a problem with the card. Every time I removed it from my phone and put it into my computer, the files were still there safe and sound. The S4 is very touchy with certain SD card brands, but then again I even have SD problems with samsung cards when i was on the stock ROM. Ever since I went to CM, I've never had external storage issues.

Agreed, I had a Samsung card and a sandisk and have had a few scares. Take it out and put it back in, its all still there. Unless you really do have a bad sd card.. Its possible.

Odd Problem with SD card.

Today I connected my phone which is running CM7 RC2 to my PC and mounted it as storage so I could remove pictures. I turned off USB storage and thought nothing of it.
But when I got a call later I realised my ringtone wasnt playing, it was silent.
I went into the sound settings, and under notiications or ringtones, I cant find any of my tones. Yet I can explore the SD fine and my apps transferred to SD work fine also. The system just cant find the mp3's anymore but they are there, I havent touched them in any way.
Any thoughts and theories?

the only thing i can think of is you didnt unmount your SD card properly i would recomend that you manualy extraxct the Micro SD card and place it back in and also from now on make sure you click unmount on the desktop client as well as the cell phones this could be a future way to prevent such problems from occuring.
I am unable to remove the SD without removing the batter. However, I tried it anyway and still the problem remains. The system just doesn't show my ringtones. Yet I can browse the SD card perfectly otherwise.
I'm at a loss what else to try since the phone has been perfect up until now.

well Sorry to say i had this problem with my g1 the only other option i can recomend is that you copy your most important files to your computer and then format the SD card and if that dosent work then sorry your going to have to buy a new one.
I just don't understand how mounting the SD card to get at my photos (which I have done many times in the past) has now rendered my SD card U/S.
Ok. I've used rom manager to format and partition the SD card and copied my stuff back. The problem remains. I've even tried to re-install CM7 RC2 (without wiping cache and data) and still it happens. I thought I would be clever and modify the cm7 rc2 zip file and add my ringtones as ogg manually that way. But they don't show up on the phone either. What should I do now?
try flashing another rom to see if it reads it could be a CM problem, Or go into setting/phone storge and click unmount then mount, if that fails then sorry man your going to have to buy a new sounds to me you currrupetd the SD crad from being able to be recognized.
I think there is more afoot here than previously thought.
Another problem I have is to do with images.
On my SD card there is 2 folders, Wallpapers and DCIM/Camera. In the camera folder there is 10 images which I previously took with the phone and 2 new ones. Yet when I open the gallery app, only the 2 ones I have recently taken appear. And my wallpaper folder is missing also.
furthermore, if I browse the SD card in Astro for example and try to open any of the images in the gallery, they just appear as blank images. But if I open them in the Astro image viewer, they appear perfectly.
Strange things are happening to this phone and Im not 100% sure its the SD card anymore.
How can I sort this out?
Using rom manager last night, I put on the CM7 RC2 again, this time I wiped data and cache and modified the CM7 zip beforehand to manually put my ringtones on. Now they appear. But finding songs/pictures/tones from the SD is not possible. Only if I manually browse for them.
Very frustrating.
Same thing happened here except I can't access any of my SD card.

have you tried flashing another rom to see if they read on it
I think I've made some progress.
Taking in previous advice given here, I copied my files off the SD card, formatted it and put SOME not all, of the files back. It seems to have fixed it. Because Im not the smartest person in the world, my slapdash approach to problem solving means I can't say for sure if formatting the SD card fixed it, or there was a dodgy file/folder which corrupted things. But now its working as it would.
However, its produced an odd side effect. Every time I connect my phone to my computer via usb, it will always pop up with the USB mass storage menu, where I can tap it to turn on usb storage. Even if the phone is locked and I connect it, it will unlock the phone with a serious of quick clicks and bring up the menu. While the menu is up, if I lock the screen, it will just unlock in front of my eyes. But if I hit home then lock it, its fine. Very odd.
Why has this started to happen all of a sudden?

[Q] ES screwed up a simple file operation, now my Note says my SD's blank (it isn't).

*deep breath*
I noticed that my Note II had bounced a rather small app update for lack of space on the phone. Okay, fine. I have a bunch of games on there (GTA is huge) and I guess I have to move/delete some stuff. Then I realize that my camera app has been storing stuff on the phone instead of the 64gb Class 10 Kingston SD card (in b4 "Kingston is crap!"). So I make that change and tell the phone to start saving photos to the SD card. Fine. There are already some photo files on the SD card, so I decide to use ES File Explorer to move the existing photos from my DCIM folder to the one on the SD card. ES tells me everything went fine, and a subsequent check confirmed this. All good so far.
Then I went for a drive and decided to play tracks off my phone. What? Nobody home. No music for some reason. Everything's gone. Fine, I'll look into it when I get home.
This morning: "Oh, I have a photo of that! Let me just get it..."
Nobody home.
Go to ES File Explorer, and all the files and folders on the stupid SD card are 404.
Go to my computer. Connect my Note II and look at the drives on the phone. Windows shows the phone's storage, and shows the card storage, which says there's stuff on there (as in, space is taken up). Click into the drive and... Nothing's there.
Unmount the SD in Settings and put it into a card reader. Maybe the phone's goofing up, right? Windows says that the card needs to be formatted (because it's using an unfamiliar filesystem).
Nuts.
Put the card back into the phone. The phone will recognize the filesystem, so it should be-- What?
Phone says the card is now blank or using an unsupported filesystem.
So there's my problem. How do I proceed? I know that stuff's on there. I just know there's something stupid going on that's preventing me from getting at it.
As long as I can yank my latest photos off there, I don't mind wiping the card and starting over, since it's just media stuff I was keeping on there anyway. What do I use to crack into it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
UPDATE: Various file recovery apps (in both Windows and the phone) are telling me that the card now has truly nothing on it. There are many, many really great swear words I want to share with you right now, but am prohibited from using on this forum. It actually HURTS not to use them right now.
Why do people seem to have so many problems with 64gb Class 10 cards on the Note II?
I had similar problem, I was trying to use software for SGSII to map SD card as usb flash disk to a PC and it didn't work and when I disconnected I had same symptoms as you. I put the card in reader and connected to PC and repaired with Minitool (just search for "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition"). I lost couple of folders but most of it was ok.
Good luck!
Sounds like You have a Corrupted Boot sector.
Put the SD card in a Card Reader on Your Windows PC.
Open a Command Prompt and Type This - chkdsk /X /F <SD card drive letter>:
If Your SD card is Drive G, It would Look Like This - chkdsk /X /F G:
This will repair the Boot Sector if that is the Problem.
Put the SD card back in Your Phone and You should be Good To Go.

File storage help

Hey everyone, pretty much first serious post. Hope someone can help me with it.
I have an At&t Galaxy s3, running the latest aokp rom, by task 650, its up to android 4.3
my issue is that i can add files to my phones internal sd card and its external sd card, but once i restart, the files are gone. all my files that i added even as long as a week or two ago are still there, even some things that i delete return once i reboot. i can move files from my internal sd card to the external and they stay after a reboot and vice versa. so i know that things can be added. but for some reason when i transfer music through windows file explorer to either sd card as soon as i reboot those files are gone. when i xfer the files it does say that "your device might not be able to play or view this file."
i can even play the music for a while after copying it as long as i don't restart, eventually it starts to go into hyperdrive so its a second of squiggles then goes to next song.
even if i transfer files through a wifi based app like air droid or just using an app to copying over a shared network the same thing happens.
i don't think that the internal sd card or external are corrupt because i can move files back and forth as long as they were on the device originally.
i don't know if i should reformat my external sd card because i doubt it would fix it then i'd be out of all my music.
really hoping someone can help me,
this was happening before i upgraded to 4.3 having done that only a day or two ago and it has been happening for at least a couple weeks, and it worked on the 4.2 version i had because i took me a couple months to upgrade to 4.3 and in that time i did add files to the internal and external.
last thing to mention, with a torrent phone app when i download files they also dissappear.
hope someone can help me with this, and that it's simple.
i'd rather feel dumb than it be something complicated.
thanks for any and all help yall can give.
update
I did a full clean install of the aokp rom i'm on wiiping everything instead of just the dalvik cache and cache, which normally works fine.
now the internal sd card retains the files i'm adding to it, even after a couple reboots. which is a step up. but the external still won't let me add files to it, even if i copy them over from my internal to the external using astro file manager or es file explorer. on restart files are gone from the external. i don't think that the external sd card is corrupt but i'm copying all the file off of it right now, then plan to reformat. not sure how i'll go about it, but i really hope it works.
this is really frustrating, its a 64gb external micro sd card that has always worked perfectly.
any input at all would be a great help.
update 2
my external sd card is the problem then i guess, because i put it in my brothers phone, did reformat, and it says reformating deleting all data. then remounts it.
shows exact same amount of available space and storage, stuck at 42.2gb or whatever, if i go into the sd card manually and delete files as soon as i reboot the phone all the files are back.
is there anyway to fix this?

Galaxy Tab S deleted my SD card files

Hello all; I just got the T-mobile Tab S LTE variant, SM-T807T, and I am/was absolutely loving it.
then 30 minutes ago...
I inserted my SD card from my nook, a 64GB card with about 55GB worth of comics, music, ebooks and photos. At first no app could see anything on the card (although the Storage menu in the Tab's settings showed the correct space and how much was full).
Rebooted and I could see all my pictures using my favorite galary app, QuickPic.
However, some files wouldn't open so I unmounted the card through the menu, took it out, inserted it back in and no files show up at all.... OK
Rebooted the tablet and now it looks like I lost about 30GB of files! the "comics" "ebooks" "music" folders are all completely gone. and almost all folders are gone from my "photos" folder. I unmounted the card and put it into the PC and same thing.
Some folders are still there with a few files here and there.
I'm pretty devastated. The SD card worked this morning in my nook and I have been organizing comics on it for months.
I will try recovery software when I get home but this is awful and so much time is lost on the organization of the folders. That's assuming I can even recover the files. Anyone have any suggestions?
My tab is unrooted (couldn't find T807T root anywhere) and 2 days old. Should I return it or could it be my card or stock KitKat or what?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Update:
While I'm not sure what exactly went wrong, my LOST.dir folder had over 20GB worth of files in it so I used "MiniTool Power Data Recovery" to scan the card and was able to find all the files and restore them to my desktop in proper directory hierarchy and file names (which if you've ever used data recovery software you'll know is quite rare). I had the software from before when I had some SD failure in my dSLR (I'm sensing a pattern here, and I actually invest in good branded cards!) and the program worked perfectly.

Exactly don't use them cheap cards they are crap
I did use a branded card, Team 64GB SDXC from newegg. I always get cards with reviews form reliable sources.
update:
After reformatting the card in the tablet, and moving all the files back to it and trying to use it in the Tab S it still wouldn't work. It wouldn't delete my files anymore but it had a very strange behavior whereas I could see the card's contents for about 20 seconds after mounting it but then everything would disappear completely. The used/free capacity would still show accurately in the Storage settings tab but I could not access any of the data through any programs (including Samsung's My Files).
Funny enough, I had the same sd card in my phone (same brand/model/capacity) and that one works fine in the tab. My phone (galaxy note 2) reads both so i swapped them.
Everything running smoothly now, except of course for Google's douche move to disable write to sd card in 4.4.2. I hope root for the SM-T807T comes soon...

All files on external SD card corrupt after unexpected shutdown

Hey guys and girls!
This morning my phone turned off by itself (13% battery left) and needed somewhat longer than usual to reboot (in the meantime I plugged it back in to the charger). First thing I noticed was that my whole theme got reset as well as it started showing me introductional tips ("long press here to move your apps to the homescreen, ecc.). It also started to update apps in the Play Store even though I set it to manual ... so basically a LOT of things were reset.
The biggest problem I'm having now is though that all my files (pictures, videos, music) that are stored on an external micro SD card are corrupt. It's not possible anymore to open anything. I already removed the micro SD card and put it into an adapter to have a look at the files via the laptop. But nothing, even though the sizes of the files seem OK, I can't open them.
Does anyone have a clue as to what exactly happened here? Are those files lost (at least of some I have a backup) or is there anything I can do to "repair" them? Help is really appreciated, thanks!
PS: Things like the card unmounting and re-mounting never occurred. So I can't tell if the card was dying or if actually the phone ruined my files.
Did you happen to be using a SanDisk SD Card? I've had my 10 brick 2 of those until I switched to Samsung SD Cards about a year ago and haven't had issues since.
I never could manage to recover files from the damaged SD cards.
I have a Samsung SD card and had something similar.
I guess I was on Viper Rom and basically my phone restarted around 15-20% of battery. After a long wait for booting back again, all my settings were gone.
Files and others in the SD card was okay but basically until I formatted the card, I wasn't able to boot into the Download Mode to install a new rom...
I fixed the restart issue by installing the official HTC Rom.
Thanks for your replies.
It is indeed a SanDisk 16GB card. It seems though that the card is still working (no problems accessing it via phone or laptop), just the files appear to be broken. In the meantime I also tried apps like PC Inspector File Recovery, but to no success
I'm still on stock HTC Sense by the way, no root, nothing.
Anyone know though why that happened (resetting everything, etc.)?
Hit me with a PM I'll give you a SanDisk restore tool which works quite ok. there is a huge chance some files can be recovered, some will be damaged though. Don't push any new files on the card after you tried to restore the files
HTC 10-Corrupted microSD card
I know this is an older thread, but I was wondering if there is a solution. I have an HTC 10 which has an micro SD card in it, that is "married" to the phone. When connected to a computer, the computer recognizes the phone, and the microSD card, and begins to load the folders/files. Eventually this process stalls, and the phone/drive is no longer readable by the computer. To get the computer to recognize the phone/card again, I need to restart the phone, but the same thing happens again.
I have like 20gigs of data on the card, and cannot just put the card in a reader, because it's encrypted to the phone. Any possible solutions? It's frustrating to see the files/pictures for a minute or two, and then have them disappear. I have tried copying/pasting the files while they're visible, but this often triggers the computer to no longer recognize the phone/memory card. I've tried to un-encrypt the microSD card, but the phone can't recognize/access the microSD card long enough to complete that process.
Please help if you can.
