[Q] Should I buy this phone this time as N4 is just coming

Should I buy the Samsung galaxy nexus , instead of N4 which will arrive now . I only dont like N4 having unremovalbe battery and a glass at back which will surely break when i will drop it. Though N4 will be great in terms of performance.

if you live somewhere where play store is available wait for the n4, if you live somewhere where play store is not available buy the gnex < this suggestion is if price matters to you cuz places where there is no play store will be paying double the price..
if price doesnt matter wait for the n4 and buy it, its alot better than the gnex.. the non-removable battery is not that big of a deal and put a case on if you are worried about the glass back

Ok, I have a Galaxy Nexus and I am pleased with it's performance and such from what I have read. Now with my Galaxy Nexus it is rooted and running AOKP jb milestone 1 and I am very pleased but lets not get side tracked here. I would buy the Galaxy Nexus firstly because me personally like Samsung better than LG. I reckon Google should of stuck making phones with Samsung but that is none of my business. I have had a great experience with my Google Nexus S which is made by Samsung and now a even better experience with my Galaxy Nexus. I'm not saying LG is bad but just saying that I personally like Samsung is better. Me personally would buy the Galaxy Nexus even though the the Nexus 4 is a new smartphone and better in general. Although I do wish that the Galaxy Nexus would get jb 4.2. I hope that is enough and that you now what I would do.

Look at the phones Samsung has out right now then compare them to anything LG has ever released.

Honestly, just wait a bit for the N4 to get released and see if theirs any major issues.
Just because its made by LG doesn't mean samsung's Gnex is better, BUT it is because its made by LG that doesn't give assurance thhat it will be a good phone.
I got my Gnex a month ago and honestly i like the N4. Gnex's battery life is horrible.
If you really don't want to wait and see reviews, I would get the N4 only because google is advertising that the Nexus family consist of the N4,N7, and N10. They even removed the Gnex off Play.
This is all assuming you are not buying a 2 year contract.
Buy a gnex off ebay for 200 and wait for something better.

Extended OEM battery makes my phone last 12 hours with 5 - 6 hours screen on time with heavy usage. It works for me.

Seeing that the N4 doesn't have LTE I would totally jump on the GNEX bandwagon. I love my GNEX and with LTE it has no issues. With all that being said I would totally recommend just going with the GNEX, I would try to avoid a contract if possible though.

Oh I will be getting this bad boy:laugh: See where I live Canada Toronto to be precise.. LTE Is a non factor for me! Never owned Lg phone before. So can not say for sure how there quality of phones are.. I just like the fact Google decided to beef up it's hardware:highfive: But they did keep the roundness of Gnexus:highfive: The Lg Optimus G looks to square for my taste!! I still have my Gnexus But it's starting to show wear and tear. I've had it since launch day dec 18 of last year.. And besides I could buy right from Google $359.00:good: My Gnexus was from bell $762.00 :crying:the only carrier at that time when released!! And the Price much better.. I can't go on everybody's take on what the phone will look or act like!! I use my phone differently than the next man... BTW The majority of complaints of I've heard. the lack of LTE SDcard More Storage Really Now Since the first Nexus. Yes it did have an expandable Sd card slot:good: But Since the Nexus S it STOPPED!! I can find plenty for cheap. I've been deployed and have a 4s and 4g came to our area so just curious if the nexus still stacks up good to new phones?
Also I should mention I had a galaxy nexus before the 4s so I know what it's capable of.

Yes, and if you can get it around 250 dollars, it will be a steal. It will last you at least 2 more major android releases and still be generations ahead of the apple phones.

I got mine off of ebay in November after having an iPhone for 2 years. I was worried at first because I was stuck on 4.1.1 (I have the verizon version), which ran very smooth, but i bought a nexus to get the latest updates. After rooting and upgrading to MMuzzy ROM with Tiny kernal, I have yet to see a smoother phone. I was really only going to use this phone for about 6 months before I upgraded to something else, but I decided that this phone is more then enough for me. I love the stock android and the power is enough.
The only thing I hate is how bad the battery life is though.

I've found quite a few used for under 250$ lol one in excellent condition for 75$. Before I deployed my area didn't have 4g but now it does I'm not due for a upgrade till later this year so figured I go back to the nexus and get 4g for cheap. Battery life doesn't concern me just bring a charger every where I go.

Although it might not be the best comparison, I messed with all the hottest brand new phones at Verizon a few months ago and they are no where near as smooth as my galaxy nexus. The reason it might not be fair is I've been running roms and kernels since I got it. Stock for stock... I dunno. I wasn't all that impressed with the gs3, least not like I thought I would.

Well I'm asking because it was a year ago that I had the phone and wanted to know how it stacked up against the newer phones. I'm not currently in the states so figure it was a question worth asking until I got back.

We all know it is pure Android. But S3 is a way better. At least the hardware.

I will say its a pretty solid phone even in 2013, it might start to feel a bit dated by Q3 but as of right now I think its fine. I bought 2 GNex for my mom and sister during Christmas. Sadly over paid for one @ $200 and the screen had scratches on it (night deal didn't see the scratches). The second one I bought was much cheaper @ $170 and came with a case and dock with an extra battery, but badly damaged housing. Only reason i bought that one was because the screen was perfect and replaced the housing for $15 bucks. Still cheaper then the first one I bought and now looks mint.
Dad got the hTC One S and although I love the build and design of the phone and the hardware is better. I still think i may trade that for a GNex or at least put CM/AOKP on it, coz hTC won't support it past 4.2 if it even gets 4.2 and as it currently stands its much slower then the GNex thanks to bloated Sense.
For my family members they use it as a phone more then anything else and maybe some browsing so I think it will last them another 3 years or so. Don't think Google will support it past Android 5 though.
These were major upgrades for them, coming from 1GHz, 512MB RAM and ****ty camera. The camera not the best but decent so can't really complain.
PS I love the AOSP look which is why i run AOKP on my S3 but Sense over touchwiz and hTC build quality over Samsung any day. hTC just gets cheap on the hardware mainly camera/screen and RAM.

Gnex is a good option because it will always have the latest updates and more roms than other phones but if you don't have a tight budget then go for htc one x+ or note 2 (if you don't mind the size), Nexus 4 would be a good choice but it's rare. I would not recommend s3 as s4 is going to come out soon or you can get an s3 after the launch of s4 as it'll be much cheaper by then.

I will hopefully get the ball rolling. I personally will wait with upgrading. Reason being is when I upgraded to the s3 when it was at preorders and rumors of other more powerful phones came out. Then the note 2 appeared. I was upset. I will personally wait for the next stage of the new and hopefully octa core processors that the note 2 or the next google phone comes out with.

+1 I absolutely agree with you Bruce Lee. There's really no need for the S IV. The S III does everything I need it to do and more. The last thing I need a phone to do is take over my life.
The only reason to upgrade from the S III to S IV would be bragging rights... How much are they really worth?

S3 doesn't have a 1080p screen with a 400+ ppi. It is as substantial upgrade as any these days. That being said, I'm going to skip over it. It's pretty much one step above or a half step above the s3 in many ways but I am under contract until December so I can't justify paying outright 500$ mostly for the screen overhaul. If anything I'll wait to see the Motorola X phone since it is supposed to be as low as 200$ from what I've read and wait for the s5 or whatever the new hotness is next year.

I found the Samsung IV release presentation extremely cheesy---I'm not sure what they were thinking.
I am disappointed at all the hype that preceded the release. What happened to the flexible, unbreakable screen? What happened to the very innovative Big-Little Exynos octocore that the US will not be receiving? And a pentile screen again!
I am pleased with the slightly bigger screen, the +400 ppi, and the bump in battery capacity. IMO, Samsung would have hit a home run if they would have built the Galaxy 4 with similar construction like the HTC One (instead of all the plastic). I hear the speakers on the One are amazing and I hope the Galaxy's are at least on par. My contract renews in January and so I will wait to see what the Motorola X and the new Galaxy Note will provide (if it doesn't go up to a 6 in. screen).

I'm completely happy with my s3, not planning on upgrading any time soon!

I don't understand the hype for 1080p displays... Playing any type of game is going to murder your battery, and you're waisting CPU cycles on pixels you can't see. I personally would've rather had a 720p samoled plus display. No more screen burn in, dark pixels, and battery effiecent.

Sammy has some new tech that's supposed to reduce battery used by the screen, forgot where I read that but I believe it said Nokia has used it as well before. I haven't used the s4 obviously, but the DROID dna has a 1080p screen and I at least can see a huge difference between that screen and my s3 or my girlys one X which is more comparable given that both the HTCs are lcd. Especially in plain text.

So I'm coming from a Samsung Infuse, and honestly, this phone cannot piss me off even more than I already am. I'm talking about constant resets (stuck power button), terrible GPS reception, UNBEARABLE LAG even with the latest paranoid android, and finally, messed up APN settings which bares the phone useless since I can't have any service on it! So now you understand of my struggles with my current phone. I'm in search for something that I can rely on and won't have even the slightest bit of lag after 2+ years of owning it.
Now, I've been doing some research on some phones (gs3, htc one x, htc one, gs4) And I come here to find out your honest opinion on the GS3 since the time you've owned it. Should I save some cash buying a GS3 or a One X, or are there some sort of problems with these phones that have ticked you off that I should consider paying the extra buck and looking at the 2013 flagships instead?

I have had the blackberry storm WOW I literally through that against the wall it was stupid, I got an xperia arc, liked it got bored with it... then I got the Sony XPERIA ION enjoyed the 12MP camera but again it got boring. I can honestly say since I have gotten the S3 I have not thought about owning another phone, the ease of customization all the support for it and it works. I rely on it and there seems to be always something new to try out on it and I am still not bored with it. I am on the i747m.

I went from the Infuse to the GS3 and haven't looked back. I had a small crack in the corner of my Infuse and also the camera would not focus so I called up to see what my options were to get it replaced through the insurance plan. They told me my replacement was going to be a GS3 but that a $200 deductable would be charged to my next bill. It was a no brainer, especially since I am not eligable for an upgrade for another year. The GS3 is head and shoulders above the Infuse. It's a flagship phone with tons of support. I got it and rooted it that night. There are tons of great roms on XDA and have tried most of them. This phone is amazing. Can't really see why I'd get the S4. Perhaps when the Note 3 comes out, I would consider upgrading. An even larger screen would be very welcome.

An upgrade is really dependant on what you use a device for. The s3 does pretty much what I need it to do for work and for personnel uses.
It's plenty fast still. I ran my iPhone 4 to end of contract and still think it could what I need from a phone.

why would they release another of the same version?
It would be nexus 5 or some other name, they wouldn't reuse the same name

Just moved from my trusty Nexus S to the Canadian Galaxy S3. Love it. Finally I have free ram even when doing intensive tasks. Honestly, this is what Android should feel like.
Still learning the thing, installed TWRP, flashed latest cm10.1 nightly and put back my titanium backup. This thing feels like home, but twice as fast.
It's a bit of a shame there's so many S3 variants, really spreads out the development for it, whereas on the Nexus S there were very few versions (like 4, which all shared similar internals minus modems), making things very simple.

This is a mistake and will cost them some sales numbers. I'm sure HTC, Motorola/Google, and LG are licking their chops.
Tmobile no contract $99 Galaxy S IV is really tempting. Too bad their service sucks in this area. I'll be at 18 months come January and ready to upgrade and am currently tempted by the LG Optimus G Pro and am awaiting the details on the Google X. It sounds like the Note 3 screen will be too big for my liking.

[Discussion] Galaxy Nexus vs Nexus 4 - which would you choose today, and why?

I have an opportunity to get a 16GB Galaxy Nexus BNIB (brand new in box), literally never opened or used, for what I consider to be a really good price at this point given the age of the device. I know that as of a few days ago Google posted the 4.3 factory Android image for the Galaxy Nexus and I've been reading up on how it seems to have breathed new life into the previous flagship device for the Nexus smartphone series.
Now, with yesterday's price drop on the Nexus 4 I have to say I'm on the fence as of this moment. I'm not absolutely sure which one to get given I know the Nexus 4 will be $250 (plus tax/shipping, so about $283 and change according to Google Play), and I can get the Galaxy Nexus for $150 - no it's not some online deal, no it's not on eBay, no I can't point you to where they're that cheap, it's literally a one-time thing from a friend that worked for Google last summer and was given the GN and he never even bothered to open it (he's an iPhone person).
I guess I should say that I'm fully aware of the community of support for the Galaxy Nexus, it's huge and it continues to grow even in spite of the age of the device. It's probably only bested these days by the still awesome community of support for the HTC HD2, probably my fave device ever but that one has long since gone off my radar.
So to make a long blah blah blah help me make a decision post short, here's the real question:
If you had the chance to get a Nexus 4 16GB for $250-ish, today, or a Galaxy Nexus 16GB for $150, today, brand new never opened never touched used etc, which would you choose, and if you can say why then say why.
I'm honestly leaning towards the Galaxy Nexus for several reasons:
- I like the build better and the curved aspect of the shape/display
- I'm not a big fan of the backside glass on the Nexus 4 even in spite of it being Gorilla Glass
- the Galaxy Nexus obviously has pretty much the same or similar features as the Nexus 4 overall (meaning from a functionality standpoint)
- the Super AMOLED display (which with this one I'm considering being brand spankin' new means it doesn't have any burn-in whatsoever which does happen with AMOLED displays; I had a Galaxy S Captivate that after 1.5 years finally started showing the burn-in consistently)
- the removable battery which is probably the biggest most amazing plus of all for the Galaxy Nexus
- the pogo dock (using the contacts on the side) for the Galaxy Nexus (I know it's just for audio and charging but even so it saves wear and tear on the microUSB port (yes I'm aware it's insanely expensive but whatever)
and some other reasons as well but that covers it. So, is the Nexus 4 with a slightly increased resolution (1280x768 vs the GN at 1280x720), the quad core CPU (which isn't a big selling point to me, really), and whatever else it features that much of a better buy over the Galaxy Nexus I'm considering?
One thing that worried me about getting a Galaxy Nexus at this point would have been the age, and the wear on the internal Flash-RAM since it doesn't support a microSD card. I know that with Android 4.3 now available and TRIM finally in action, that's part of why some people are saying their Galaxy Nexus devices are "like new again" because TRIM is cleaning things up - with this brand new never used Galaxy Nexus I could buy, it would be even better and last longer because again a) it's never been used and b) I'd put 4.3 on it within an hour of opening the box, so that's a win-win if I've ever had one.
Anyway, I am seriously curious what other people might thing, so instead of asking this in the Nexus 4 forum where people would probably just flat out call me insane to want a Galaxy Nexus over that device, I figured I'd propose the question here where the Galaxy Nexus community lives.
What say you... the Galaxy Nexus brand new for $150 or the Nexus 4 for $250-ish. I really can't commit to either at this moment so I'm still on the fence.
Regarding 4G:
The 4G aspect potential for the Nexus 4 which I know can be put to use (I use the T-Mobile $30/month plan and I'm in Las Vegas where T-Mobile has outstanding coverage now) is not a consideration as I don't care about 4G at all, period, to any degree whatsoever. Obviously the Galaxy Nexus can't support that at all, but it is HSPA+ capable and again, T-Mobile here in Las Vegas has outstanding coverage so in that respect, from the actual provider perspective, the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4 are the same for my intents and purposes.
The potential 4G capability of the Nexus 4 is therefore irrelevant and not a "buying point" for me at all. Just wanted to make that aspect clear in my considerations.

Nexus 4. I love my Gnex but for the price it will last you much longer. The Gnex although going strong is starting to show its age. And with the N4 soooo cheap I'd say go for it.

Ubuntu Touch development uses the Galaxy Nexus pretty much as the reference device in terms of smartphones, and I would love to be able to do some work with that too, so that's another plus towards the GN.

Still, you should go for the N4. Even if the Gnex is going strong now it is not going to last forever. It's slow dual core (compared to the new CPUs), slow GPU and 1 gb of ram are already showing their age. Combine that with the already leaving devs and google's now-crap-support and you should have enough reasons to buy an N4.
PS: I love my gnex but if I had the option to buy an N4 or even the N5, which is coming soon, I'd go for the new one

I'm still sad that I got the GNex last August when the N4 was right around the corner for the same price. It has me salivating for an N5 in a couple months!

I recently was in the same situation but was looking at a used Nexus 4 at the time and went with the Galaxy.
What should you do? Well, I think its more of what do you want to do with your phone.
I don't play games that are very demanding on a phone (if any), I mostly use it to browse sites / message when I'm away from a PC.
So for what I need the GNex does it fine.
If you want more power, well this price drop should effect the value of other second hand phones and you could get something better then the N4. (or a cheaper the new N4)

I've still not found a way to keep enough available memory so that my services don't eventually go into restarting loops, necessitating a reboot. My wife just got a GS4 with 2GB of ram (same amount as the N4), and it's much nicer. Haven't seen it pause for 5 seconds to reload the home screen widgets and icons when exiting the browser, that's for sure.

I think everyone with gnex should w8 until nexus 5 come out.
N4 isnt the Upgrade we're all looking for. Performance on gnex is still decent, sure getting aged a bit but still enough to handle everything for our daily needs.
I agree with the memory point, 1 gig isn't enough anymore these days. You simply getting redraws all the time using facebook or chrome.

For me it's gnex, lg can't make quality phones. Besides, the nexus 4 doesn't have lte either, so it doesn't worth "upgrading". But if buying a new phone, I think nexus 4 is better since price wise they are same, why not the newer one.

If you can wait till Nexus 5 but Nexus 4 is much smoother in every aspect. Yes 4.3 made my GN smoother but it even boosted Nexus 4 performance as well.

Nexus 4 has the better GPU. So I'd choose that.

Get the N4, future proof with 1.8GB of RAM. The 700 on GN is getting cramped. That's the only reason I sold mine last week for surprisingly good 200€ (was without any sings of usage though) and ordered a 250€ 16GB N4 on Play Store via German VPN, so with shipping and all that it'll be 265€ (ordered 2, we're splitting costs).
So you'll be off basically even cheaper. If you worry about the glass back, get a dBrand back sticker, looks great and protects the device.

If the Nexus 4 is still available by the end of the year, i'll get that one (Google recently chopped off 100 Euros off of the price of the N4).
I love my GNex and will most likely not sell it because it has been a very solid performer that still gets the job done.
I don't care all that much for gaming and the like, but the increase in raw processing-power and the amount fo RAM are what does it for me.
Of course, the user-replaceable battery on the GNex is a big plus, but the problem is, that in the future we are going to have to live with built-in batteries (I don't like it either, but that's the way things are looking at the moment).

Strongly considering selling my 2012 nexus 7 and then paying cash for the rest to get the 8gb nexus 4. Its such a good deal at $199.

I'm still on the fence, remarkably, but I think I'm leaning more towards the Nexus 4 at the moment since I do want to participate in that Ubuntu Touch testing and development. The increased horsepower of the Nexus 4 (quad core, 2GB of RAM, etc) just make it the better device even in spite of me ending up paying almost twice as much (since the GN for me would be $150 brand new as noted). And according to that spreadsheet they use for tracking progress, it's the only device that currently is fully functional as far as the aspects they've worked on (Bluetooth doesn't work on anything of course, and some other hardware like the gyroscope, etc hasn't even started development yet).
Decisions, decisions...

I really hate N4... So I choose my Galaxy Nexus....

Nexus 4 no doubt.It has better battery..more rams mean more speed , not to mention the better gpu.And with google chopped off 100 bucks of its price itll be a good deal for you mate.

Nexus 4, if I can choose straightly without losing anything.
I would replace my GNex for Nexus 4 if I no need to add something else. I know it's impossible.
However, GNex is really an amazing device. Gonna use it for another year and I'll see what's next.

[Q] What phone next?

I love my GNex. Running Slim Bean 4.3 latest (highly recommended). Love the device, and it's still in minty condition. Love the totally open platform, timely updates and vibrant developer/user community. Have the T-mobile $30 pre paid plan and it's an excellent value that I want to stay with. Phone is soooooo smooth and pretty much has everything I want.........except LTE.
One of these days, I'll feel the need to upgrade the device for this feature alone. It might be in 6-12 months, certainly not tomorrow.
What's my best option for GNex + LTE in another device?
Nexus 4? Wait for Nexus 5? Galaxy S 3/4? Slim bean support would be a plus.

Google edition phones seem to fit into what you like. I jumped to a s4 from att and honestly can't be more pleased. But I'm sure in 6 to 12 months many things could tilt the smartphone balance. I would say go for the phone with the features you desire and then look into the development side. The S4 Dev is slow but also has solid mods Roms and kernels where many people would just be copying work or making it harder. Just a few things I thought about jumping from my nexus. But as you can tell a new phone did not keep me away. That allows me to play with android 4.3 and then have a quad core touch wiz device.

I have been using my GNex for over 1 year now and it has been a good fit for me. After looking at S4, it seem to be more powerful handset and camera is awesome.
However camera being not so good, is the only drawback I found in this phone. Hopefully the nexus 5 or whatever new device from Google should address this thing. May be u should wait for early next year when Google comes up with the new phone. It's only a speculation that they would be launching one next year.

If I'd have to make the change today, and to be honest I thought of it, I'd stay away from:
- Samsung - poor build quality, too much plastic
- lack of microSD slots - microSD cards are VERY cheap compared to internal upgrades so that kinda puts on a side the Nexus program
On the other side, these seem like a good option:
- Motorola - pretty good build quality, the posibility of having a qwerty slider (but only with an unlocked bootloader) - Moto X, the future Droid 5
- Sony - openness, pretty good quality - Xperia Z, whatever takes its place
Just my two cents..

The HTC One is a beautiful device and very fast. The camera is quite OK on stock ROM (and with the camera software ported to vanilla Android), but it's a bit meh with the AOSP camera software.
I like the S4's specs and it looks quite OK, until I see its back; it's so darn glossy...
If it would be available in the Netherlands, I would go for the Moto X; it has such a bunch of nifty features on an almost vanilla Android. Combined with great battery life, it would be a fun daily driver.
So really, I'm waiting for the Nexus 5 as I think the Note 3 will have the same awful plasticy back as the other Samsung devices (thankfully the GNex doesn't). The Play Store Nexus 4 is a steal for the price over there these days too, but I'm in a country where it's not possible to buy hardware in there

Myself having a s4 my lady a s3 and sister in law s2 and lets not forget the nexus I dont see samsungs build quality low. Sd card was a big thing that bugged me about the nexus. Also something to consider. You can always wait for the next best device... but you will always be waiting because there will always be something better next. Get a device you want and use the hell out of it

Well, after the Nexus 4 price cut, it seems a pretty sure bet that there will be a new Nexus phone within a the time frame of a couple of months.
Considering the flak the Nexus 4 received for not having (accessible) LTE, as well as the new Google Play edition phones packing T-Mobile LTE, it would be surprising if the new Nexus phone didn't have it.
Considering you're on a T-Mobile plan without subsidized phones, the Nexus device should be an obvious competitor.
