Hey Guys,
Hope that someone can help me, I have rooted, installed recovery and custom firmware on a few HTC's.
But this has frickin stumped me !!
The desire I have gotten my hands on does not show locked or unlocked in the boot menu, but It has got S-off I didn't think it was possible??
Tried to unlock the bootloader through HTC dev and that failed, so i thought it was already unlocked
Tried flashing recovery through fast boot, but that failed!!
I'm a bit lost, anyone got any ideas as to where I'm going wrong??
Step one: Stop trying to unlock it...there is no need
Since the phone is already s-off you dont need to worry about unlocking the bootloader.
S-off is the highest level of "openness" you can have on the desire. You have the ability to write to all of the partition that you can with an unlocked bootloader, plus more.
The fact that flashing a recovery failed is indeed a problem though. What was the exact error?

Dude,
Thanks for that, I'm now clearer on the bootloader issue.

Now the phone is just bootlooping at the HTC splash screen, any ideas whats gone wrong??

in my sig (click to show content) theres 4ext recovery as PB99IMG, click the link and follow instructions to flash recovery.
Or
Use the twrp recovery img that u have and flash it using fastboot command
fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
Then u should be able to boot into recovery
It's ALIVE !!!!

Guys,
Ok, so i realised that I was being a major dumbass and using the wrong fastboot command to try and flash my recovery.
Even when I used the command - fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img, the result was the same, no recovery for me and a bootloop
But the 4ext recovery as PB99IMG zip file on the root of my S/d card has worked, I now have a working recovery and no more bootloop.
Thanks for all your help guys

I tried flashing both of these recoveries
CWM - Touch 5.8.2.0 - Bravo
TWRP - 2.6.0.0 - 2013.07.16
Had the same result on both neither would flash in fastboot.
Taking a look through the files on the phone i can see leftover data from both CWM and also Titanium backup, so its totally been flashed and rooted before I got my hands on it.

Hey guys !
I tried AmonRA recovery a few days ago but I prefer Clockworkmod so I'd like to revert back to it (2.5.0.7 version). I made a few searchs and everyone says to use fastboot for that (fastboot flash recovery). So I installed the last AndroidSDK, ran fastboot command for flashing recovery BUT it says
Code:
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
So I'm asking : what did i miss ? I heard about SPL, what is that ?
I also tried the method of this link : http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/ but it says the cmd is not known.
Thanks !

You can only use fastboot flash recovery if you have an "s-off" SPL (alpharev.shadowchild.nl), otherwise you have to use unrEVOked (http://unrevoked.com/#desire)
Yea, I just S-Offed my desire, it worked well. But I have tried to use unrevoked several times to revert back to clockwork from AmonRA, it failed every time on Windows & MacOS.
have you tried downloading Rom manager from Market and flash clockwork from there?
I tried yes but It didnt change anything to the recovery. Now i'm s-off, fastboot flash recovery worked, so I guess I'm done here, thanks for your help !

Glad you got it sorted!
I cannot upgrade to a newer version of Clockworkmod recovery !
I have tried everything, fastboot flash returns failed signature verification, rom manger also cannot update to a newer version.
Also tried Unrevoked but it fails.
the phone is rooted and I have flashed several ROMs in the past without any problem.
Any idea?
Fastboot flash doesn't return verification failed error.
You need to be s-off to change recover using fastboot. Before you do anything, read some tutorials, you need to differentiate among most basic terms.

It can do if you try to fastboot flash connected in hboot or are s-on

I get this error from fastboot
< waiting for device >
sending 'recovery' (3256 KB)... OKAY [ 0.468s]
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 0.952s
I have tried to flash clockworkmod 5 and also tried the touch version, but with no luck.
Maybe the S-OFF is messed up, but only if rom manager did something wrong, because last time when I have upgraded the recovery it was from ROM Manager.
Fail on my part...
That seems like there is no device tho. My money is on broken drivers. There is a guide how to do in development so search for it as it works 100%.
unrevoked connects to phone, sends the file to phone then at the end it fails.
I have tried revolutionary for S-OFF the program connects to phone then displays the phone serial number, asks for the key then after I enter the key, the connection is lost.
So I really don't know what to do anymore, and I need a newer recovery since the one which I have does not have options to partition the SD Card and ICS is eating a lot of memory without SDExt.
The phone is ok, it's not broken, I flash every 2-3 days a newer ICS ROM and it works.
why dont you try a different recovery.i have been using ext4 recovery for a while and imo it is way better than cwm....
I use clockworkmod because I have purchased the ROM manager tool and it works with their recovery.
I finally managed to flash a newer clockworkmod recovery and very strange after reboot it has reverted back to the old 2.5.0.7 version !!! At least I was able to partition my sd-ext...
I have tried the boot CD with alpha-rev it freezes in the final stage, but after that I was able to flash the new recovery using the recovery itself, but as I said after reboot the new recovery has gone !
Now I have tried to flash again a newer recovery from ROM manager it says it finished successful, but the recovery still remains 2.5.0.7

Because all you are doing is a fake flash. You need to flash it from fastboot in order to stick.
Ditch the Rom manager. That pos app is guilty of more usb bricks than most of us can count.
And how can I flash it from HBOOT ?

You need to read ADB for dummies guide to gain knowledge how to set ADB up.
Then you go into hboot by pressing vol- and power button.
Select fastboot.
Download your recovery.img and place it in the same folder your fastboot.exe is, then type in cmd:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache.
Return to hboot and boot in the recovery.

Erklat, thanks for this - I have the same problem.
i have finally got round to get adb, etc, working..and it kinda works, except that when flash a newer version of CWM (v5.0.2) on fastboot it still doesn't work. I tried using the Rom manager, which failed straight away, and I followed your steps above. But still didn't work.
So my story's background:
I rooted my Desire with Unrevoked so I could install ICS (sandvold) - and it has been working beautifully. But now I want to create an ext3 partition and the GParted method is far too complex for me to follow through.
CWM i have installed doens't partition, and so I though I'd update the recovery tool so I could use it to partition.
Any suggestions on what I could do?

Do you get an error when you flash a new recovery via fastboot or does it say it successfully flashed the recovery.img file? If you didn't get an error, do you always go to Rom Manager to access recovery? If yes, I say ditch rom manager. Try vol down + power like on erklat's instruction, this time select Recovery. See if the recovery you flashed is booted.
If you are s-off it's better you flash 4ext recovery. It's by far the best recovery you can use for Desire.

I also tried flashing RA, just to see if it would work (and also heard its better). But nothing. It's quite bizarre.
My phone is not S-OFF - I used the HTC official software and I dont' think it does it - I have no problems in doing it if it will resolve this problem.
I have also tried this flashing using the terminal, Which I found in the Q&A's but i get several error messages, and then finally:
"error writing recovery: No space left on device"
So I uninstalled a couple of apps (freeing some 10mb+) but still the same issue.
As you are not s-off you can't flash recovery, get s-off and flash any you like

RA has not been maintained for quite some time. 4EXT is probably the best and it's developer is very devoted to his project.

Ah that really sucks. Will I be able to gain S-Off by using AlphaRev? Revolution doesn't work because my HBoot is 1.0.3... and thus not supported.
Once I get it to be S-Off I'll switch to 4EXT.

Hello guys. I've been looking arround for a solution before posting my situation, but I didin't find any help, so I hope you can help me over.
The fact is that my phone is stuck in the bootloader mode. No matter what I do, anytime I turn it on, it goes directly to the bootloader mode and gives me a message that says "fastboot mode-no boot or recovery img" in red. Beside that, my bootloader is locked, and if I try to unlock it, it goes to the unlock screen, it ask me if I want to unlock it, but even if I say "YES", it doesn't unlock. I can't get into recovery mode, so it is impossible to restore any previous backup i've made.
I can get into download mode, but as soon as the odin starts to flash the ROM, the program crashes.
I tried to erase the boot image and the recovery image, but it just says "unknown partition".
Now, why all this did happen?, well I was trying to install the stock firmware that I downloaded from sammobile, and it never installed, the program crashed and my phone got... bricked????
If I could only unlock the bootloader it would be easier, i think.
Any help, please????
not sure if it will work on locked boot loader.... also don't use any tool, plain adb/fast boot
Errors you are getting doesn't say boot loader, but boot and recovery so try it.
Start phone in boot loader mode
Fastboot erase boot
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase recovery
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You can get both files from Google images.
Thanks for responding. I tried to erase the boot and recovery partition but...
This is what i get if i try to erase the boot partition
C:\Users\Casa\Desktop\Android\ADB for NEXUS S>fastboot erase boot
erasing 'boot'...
FAILED (remote: Unknown Partition)
finished. total time: 0.000s
Same thing if I try to erase the recovery image.
And if i try to flash the boot without deleting it, this is what i get:
C:\Users\Casa\Desktop\Android\ADB for NEXUS S>fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (4148 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.406s]
writing 'boot'...
FAILED (remote: Bootloader Locked - Use "fastboot oem unlock" to Unlock)
finished. total time: 0.406s
This is really weird, i can't unlock the bootloader using "fastboot oem unlock". As I said before, it takes me to the unlocking screen, asks me if i'm sure, but even if I agree, the boot loeader is still locked. I really don't understand too much thisfar, but I think there's a problem with the partitions.
Any sugestion? I really need some help please...
Well if you're sure fastboot isn't working...
Have you tried ODIN? I think officially signed Odin.tar files can be flashed with a locked bootloader.
As much as Odin freaks me out (too damn finicky)...it can have it's uses.
Well i have already tried Odin, but the flashing process fails, as a fact it doesn't even flash the kernel.
Man, this is really weird. I can't unlock the bootloader, can't erase the boot nor the recovery image because partitions seems to be broken, damaged, lost, or I dunno; I can't flash a rom using Odin...
What can I do? I flashed an md5 file that I downloaded from sammobile (I9250XXKK1 ROM), and tried to flash it, and then my nightmare begun.
I really need some help, guys... I have posted the same problem in three different pages, and I have only gotten two answers, yours.

Hi guys... I think I should explain this ... first of all thanks for trying to help
The fact is that I can't use fastboot (I think). Let me explain: If I try to unlock the bootloader it takes me to the unlock screen, and if I choose yes, the bootloader doesn't unlock.
So, if we consider the fact that I need to unlock the bootloader to use the fastboot, I think there's no chance to use the fastboot command.
I really, really, reaaaaaaally apretiate your help guys, your knowledge will be allways wellcome.
I understand that booth have your point of view, and try to help.
This is the first tmioe I see a prolem like this, I have reading arround and there are no similiar posts, I mean, that the bootloeader can't be unlocked... I found this ------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067815&page=2 and as saycnahd said "...I feel like I need A to do B, and B to do A....".
Thanls in advice you guys...
the error message that you get from ODIN will be very helpful. we dont need it to fully write a rom, just a couple things so that you can use fastboot to flash anything you need.
Ok, Zep... I get it :good: as soon as I can, I'll post the error... right now i'm seated at work, front of my computer, using my mama's phone right now I just remember that the Odin showed me a Fail message on a big red square on the upper left corner, where it is supposed to appear the progres dialog. I know it sounds pretty basic and useless for now.

Is your bootloader unlocked?? Because you are S-ON and that is why you won't be able to flash a partition image. Or you are S-OFF or you have an unlocked bootloader. That has nothing to do with not using windows.

Hi. I flashed clockwork mod and now when my phone reboots it gets stuck on htc boot screen. I tried re-flashing a backup rom I had from SD card and still no go. Any suggestions to at least get this phone so it will boot? argh and I am going out of town this weekend so a usable phone would REALLY be good.

HT139T202307 fastboot
I do not have access to windows system and think I should have all of the tool necessary since I can use adblinux and fastboot and see the device ok
Thanks guys. I really want to get off of this ATT image!

It looks like your problem was a wrong command. The command is 'fastboot flash boot boot.img'. You wrote 'fastboot boot boot.img'. :silly:
SO I have been messing with this HTC inspire 4g and I was having some software issues on the factory ROM. So I decided to flash a custom rom to it, but I forgot that I relocked the boot loader. Now I can't seem to flash the boot.img since the bootloader is locked, and I forgot to backup the factory rom before messing with this, so now it will only boot into hboot, fastboot, and recovery. How do I proceed?
Thank you.

Unlock the bootloader again with the same token. Then flash the custom rom and the boot.img.

Sorry. I am rather newb to this. How do I proceed to unlock the bootloader with the token. Since the ace hack kit is so automated, I didn't learn a darn thing from it.

If you used the Hack Kit then you should be S-OFF. If you are S-OFF, then flash a custom recovery from fastboot and then a custom rom.

I am currently "S-ON". How do I proceed?
BTW, What does S-OFF and S-ON even mean? I've never come across it in all of my previous android hacks?
ok. I figured it out. Thank you.
how did you solve your problem?
I got the same problem. After unlocked the hboot, installed recovery, then installed a custom rom, now my phone is softbrick.
I can boot to hboot, fastboot, and recovery only. I cannot install any custom rom, reboot after install custom rom from recovery, the phone stuck at the white HTC screen.
The phone is S-ON.
I also have another problem with ADB devices, when I am in the fastboot, the fastboot devices shows the device, but when I am in either hboot or fastboot, the ADB does not show any devices.
Help!!!

1 take the boot.img from the inside of your custom rom.zip
2 put it in the same folder/ drive or herever you have adb
3 go into fastboot with your phone
4 open cmd and type fastboot flash boot boot.img[/B
go out of fastboot and start your phone up
because you still s-on the boot image can't be installed trough recovery.
no warranties here but i had the same problem and it worked fine
good luck
Lexuz,
Thanks for your help. I tried the fastboot flash boot boot.img
I got the following error:
sending 'boot' (2932 KB)... OKAY [ 0.496s]
writing 'boot'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
Help!!!
Edited:
The error "Signature verify fail" only appear when there is "*** RELOCKED ***" shown. I put the hboot back to "*** UNLOCKED***" then when I tried the "fastboot flash boot boot.img", it succeed. However, when I reboot, instead of stucked at the white htc screen, it shows different boot screen (instead of the white HTC screen), but the phone did not go further after an hour.
I also tried "fastboot flash boot ..." in combination of recovery flashing but none works.

i also got that same problem by using the wrong boot.img.
make sure you use the boot.img that is in your custom rom folder and then flash it (the rom) via recovery (i also think you have to reflash recovery to do this but i'm not sure, for me it has been a learn by your mistakes project).
Unlock bootloader again ..then flash boot image at bootloader then reboot normally ..

No worries on Me!
Hello to all developers,
Since I go throw this discussion I found out you people need some information regarding unlock boot loader.
I have literally no idea when I rooted my phone and install custom ROM and what is CWM. You guys at least knows it more than me,I'm sure but what i noticed is to unlock bootloader doesn't really require token code to unlock using htcdev.
As i mention above you may unlock bootloader via some program like i used it when these all words are completely new for me. I went through kingroot(dot)net, that site is in chinese so using translator i tried to understand the meaning out of it. Underneath that site once you scroll it down you'll find some various different icons for other site. From there I found to go through mgyun(dot)com download and install software. Don't worry its in Chinese but once you connect your phone it will display HTC G10(a9191) in other words desire HD/inspire 4g.
Kindly look throw all app you'll find "LOCK" kind of a icon. Click on it and check your phone it will display yes/no option choose yes and press power button to unlock BOOT LOADER.
NO NEED ANY SORT OF HTCDEV. As I said these words are couple of weeks ago totally new for me.I did that 20-30 times but I didn't have any idea what so ever that why its needed and what for.
Few things for S-OFF and S-ON
S-OFF you have all access because security is OFF
NO BOOT.IMG require here.
S-ON you have security ON
Always flash boot IMG using adb or using fast boot drivers.
Thanks.
