I am a complete n00b to Android and tablets, been a PC guy for years and that was fine...until now
I just got the Kindle HD Fire 7, 16GB as I don't know if it's 1st or 2nd gen etc. as I said I am a complete n00b.
The firmware is 7.3.6 and any info I find on rooting seems out dated. From what I read I have to install ADB and then some other apps. I don't want to try any until I can verify what the correct steps and files are for this. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
One last question is there anyway to remove the DRM from movies I buy? I have been sticking with DVDs since I can rip them but with HD and all I am thinking of buying them on Kindle but refuse to have DRM crap.
anyone?

Yes I have read some but none mention if it works for 7.4.6, they all just say 6.x. Will it work with my firmware 7.4.6.?
I don't tend to post in this section, but at the risk of you hard bricking, no it will not work, you have a kindle fire HD 7" model, you are looking in the wrong forum, the tools here will hard brick your kindle. Look for the amazon kindle hd 7" forum, I would send u a link but I'm on my kindle, and the xda app apparently doesn't have a copy function for sub-forums URLs.

So again, if your device is NOT running software version 6.3.1 or earlier, you are probably in the wrong place, despite what the title of the forum says. The forums you are looking for are located here. And even though those forums say "Kindle Fire 2 and Kindle Fire HD", they are still the same in regards to rooting and modification. Remember, the box will not say you have a Kindle Fire 2, you have to check the software version.

Q1: How can I tell if I have a 2nd generation Kindle Fire? For HD models the answer should be pretty obvious, but the KF2 has nearly the exact same hardware configuration as the original. Short of opening the device, the only way to tell for sure is by checking the software version. Devices running a software version of 6.3.2 or earlier is a 1st generation Kindle Fire. All other versions belong to 2nd generation Kindle Fires.

Q25: Now that I know all of the important stuff, how do I root my 2nd generation Kindle Fire? While there are several tools and scripts used to root the 2nd generation Kindle Fires, they all rely on the same basic method, the Bin4ry method , which takes advantage of a remount timing issue during an ADB restore. It is very effective and works for nearly all devices natively running Ice Cream Sandwich....

Thank you stunts513 & soupmagnet. I am glad you were around to help as I could have bricked it for sure.
I will read through these links carefully and see how to go about this safely. Thanks again.

I wanted to ask if there is a way to root the Kindle Fire without too much complication on XP. Even if I have to install a virtual PC, I'll do it. I just really want to put Android 4.0 on it but can't because I don't know how. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hi
I have just got a new kindle fire, but when I tried to root it, it could not be rooted with the kf utility tool .
the system frimware version is 10.1.1
please help
Root access means very little on these. No ability for a custom recovery and you cannot flash roms but here`s the tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893838 and more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892002. One thing I know for sure is that you don`t want to mess up with these they make a lousy hockey puck.
ok, I installed the super user using this " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893838 "
and now I have google apps.
can I install custom recovery like TWRP ?
Look at my above post bud no custom recovery, no roms could be this way for awhile, could be this way forever.
ok thanks
If you're rooting a Kindle Fire with the 10.1.1 firmware, you are in the wrong forums. Only the 2nd generation Kindles are running that software version.
Try the KFHD forums.

Well, this is "officially" the right place because 10.1.x is the software version for the Kindle Fire 2 and the post is in the "Amazon Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire 2" forum. However, it's "technically" the wrong forum because the Kindle Fire 2 is much more in line with the KFHD (with respect to the software) than the original KF.
I think this might be a good source of confusion to all involved, so I'll get a note to the higher-ups to see if a change can be made.
I was just thinking what a bad idea this merger is because now new users will get convoluted information. Everything here applies to the original Kindle fire and will brick a Kindle fire 2.
hi folks. I just bought a used Kindle Fire and want to get ICS or JB on it. It has had nothing done yet. Can someone give me a link to the best/latest walkthrough to do this? There are so many out there it seems and I dont know which to use or where to start. thanks.

Not much of a walkthrough there but you can find one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923010 oh and your kindle must be first gen. If its not you will have a permanent brick!!

Yes it is first gen with 6.3 on it. I was told that indicates that it is a first gen. Thanks though.
Then I guess your in luck.
I am looking a obtaining a Kindle Fire 2, (none HD)
I am asking if procedures exist to:
Root
FFF
TWRP
Clock Work Mod rom
Dual boot nice, but no a priority for me.
There's no fff for kf2, it has a locked bootloader so we use 2nd bootloader. Not sure what clockwork mod ROM is, I know of cwm recovery but as far as I know that's not ported to kf2. Just thought I'd warn you before you go flashing fff and hardbricking it.

You REALLY SHOULD read this before doing anything:

Honestly- if you haven't bought one yet I recommend saving your money for something more easily hackable.
We have some great roms for this device but it has cost many bricks.
We have no dual boot. Buy a 2012 nexus tablet instead. That's what I would do if u could go back in time.

Is that a question? Is it a first generation Kindle fire? Or a first generation Kindle fire 2?
Unless it's the original Kindle fire- is gonna be a PITA unless you're willing to do lots of research and read every word of every thread around here.

Sorry for the double post....posted this earlier today with no hits.
Hello all. Glad to have found this forum. Been here for a short time and from the looks of it, I am in the right place.
Have a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen and was looking to flip it to Android OS.
Problem - My Kindle did an OTA software update and from reading the forum doesn't look like I will be able to go back to an older version which means I am stuck with the simple Android 2.(something).
As this forum has a wealth of information I know I have not read every tread......
Any advice on converting to Android 4.(something)?
My Kindle Fire has SW Version 10.4.8
Thanks in advance for any help.
wrong forum, you have a Kindle Fire 2, I have requested that this thread be moved to

but you should read [REF]All Things About Kindle Fire 2
edit: thread was moved from Kindle Fire General

Thanks for the direction and help. Will keep searching.
You need to root, and install Twrp recovery, then you can install custom roms.

I was reading on a different part of the forum that if I root it the way it stands (w/ SW 10.4.8) I would brick it. The warning was pretty certain because with this SW build it closes all the "holes" - so to speak.
Unless there has been some new development.
Read question 5 from this thread......

You misunderstand q5. You can root 10.4.8
If you want to install the second bootloader and twrp you'll have to downgrade the bootloader. .. But root is fine

I guess the next question would be has anyone successfully converted 10.4.8 to Android?
If so, what are the steps. I can find steps for an older SW version but not 10.4.8.

Yes. I have. Follow these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963
You'll see that part of the instructions will downgrade the bootloader. I greatly recommends that you have a fastboot cable available since this is a notoriously tricky device. Hit me up on Pm if you need more detailed assistance.
You only! Lol. Every time I say that I get 1000 pms from other people.
