A moment of silence please... I dropped it... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Yes, I dropped it in the toilet, right after a wee... Happened an hour ago. It doesn't charge anymore, I'm desperate. Guess it's EOL for my bestest friend... Damn this sucks! Just wanted some sympathy, so I decided to share it here.
It's time for bed, hopefully tomorrow I will find a replacement... Nexus 4? Or a second hand G_N? Cyanogen compatibility is crucial. I don't know, I'm out of ideas. Thanks for listening.

You should be able to find a used gnex at a decent price, if that's what you want to do. I personally wouldn't get a n4, I'd wait for the n5

Take out the battery and throw it in a bag of rice for two days... that did the trick for me
Also, if you happen to sell it for parts on eBay, would you please mention where your phone's been? =P

In a bag of rice? Who would want to eat that kind of rice?!
The N5 is what I would like, but I can't be without a phone for that long... I'm going to try that rice thing, but I don't think it's going to save it. Couldn't get the battery out quick enough. It started some weird downloading Andoid target thing, so I guess it shorted one or two things.
And I'm going to cry myself to sleep...

I know how you feel, I overcooked mine on tuesday and just got setup again today.

Just as well it was a gnex an not a brand new nexus 5 down the toilet.

The rice trick pulls water from the phone and dries it out, try to pull the battery as quick as podsible and stick it in a ziplock bag with rice for two days... just something to keep in mind if your phone or other electronic device decides to play bobbin for brown stuff again =X

Blow dryer would be quicker than rice lol

Still no charging... Only when it's off it tries to charge, but I think it's not really charging. When it's on it doesn't charge.
Any suggestions to change to? I can pick up a used white 16GB Gnex for 180 Euros ($200?), but I'm not sure if I should.
-edit- After an hour of heater drying it started charging again... Guess it's coming back to life. Time to try some vitals...

Check a med supply shop that sells hearing aids. They carry desiccant in jars for hearing aids. You could dump it in a zip lock bag and seal it up. Some of the pellets turn blue when the desiccant is saturated. Cook it until it's dry and seal it all up again

Still in the market? I'll sell you my Toro--it's clean, no scratches, it's been rained on but never submerged or dropped on a hard surface. PM me if you're interested!

After checking the vitals all seems okay. I guess I'm one lucky f**k... So this near death experience was another good lesson in keep your phone in your pants when your willy is out!
Thanks to you all for your support!
-edit- Again loading trouble... back on the heater with some salt and rice... Hopefully it'll be the last run. Let them hurry with that Nexus 5!

I'm still trying to figure out why one would need to check their phone while peeing.
This is the second time I've heard that, and the second time it ended in a broken phone.

It was kind of a freak accident. But the short version of the story is: I leaned over to get something on the floor and then it fell out of my chest pocket. Only was submerged for half a second... I ordered a new usb port/flex cable, but it seems all problems disappeared for now. Fingers crossed!

I don't think using heat in order to dry the device is a good idea. First stage I recommend full disassemble and then rice.
Heat can damage the device. Plastic+heat=melt

Full disassembling the device + a alcohol bath will do the trick.
Disconnect the battery before doing the bath though. The higher the concentration of alcohol the better.

Had a full day without problems, so I guess opening up the device isn't necessary anymore. I'd rather keep it closed when there's no need to open it. Keeps the dust out and sealings as sealed as possible. When the charge problems come back I'll take it apart to put in a new usbportflexthingy that's already on it's way.
Perhaps the Nexus 5 isn't even necessary, I really hope so, because I'm pretty fond of my Gnex, except for the battery... almost twice a day it needs juice...

Water damage will not be obvious immediately, I strongly recommend you to open up and take a look/clean the board with a paper towel at the very least.
I have a old Sony Ericsson C902 that was put on a wet bathroom table, long story short, it died on me 1-2 months later.

[Q] Water Damage HTC G2

What's up guys, I recently dropped my G2 in a puddle of water,
I was wondering if it was a good idea to get it fixed by HTC or if you guys have any other recommendations of G2 repair companies?
You should have taken the battery out ASAP and then just leave it out and unplugged overnight. It will be fine.
I did take the battery out, but the LCD has a greenish hue, the wifi is unresponsive, and the haptic feedback is off. Does this mean I need to get all of these components in order for it to work?
Take the battery out and put it in a tub of rice.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
If it was already submerged completely and the tub of rice doesn't work, one more last ditch thing you can try is to submerge and rinse it out in a bucket of CLEAN (ideally distilled, at a minimum filtered) water.
If there were minerals (or other contaminants) in the water/liquid it was submerged in they could still be on the circuit board, the clean water might just clean it off.
Of course after you try this you need to let it dry for at least 24 hours then submerge it in rice for another 24 hours.
(The rice will absorb the water)
My boss once dropped his blackberry in a toilet and used this method, he did not use rice though, tried it after a day of drying and it didn't work, tried it again 24 hours later and it still didn't work but on the 3rd day the device came back to life so he called it the "JesusBerry" for the next ~year until he upgraded.
BTW you are probably screwed, so don't get your hopes up.
Yeah, ideally you should let that thing dry out for more than 3 days. I know we all "need" our phones, but if you want it to work properly, you're just going to have to wait. I dropped my BB in the toilet, took the battery out, rinsed it, and let it sit. I was impatient and tried to use it the next day - it was all messed up. Three days later, it started to function, but there were a lot of glitches - and I mean a lot. Not until a couple of weeks was it functioning as it should. If you are under warrantee from HTC or have phone insurance, I suggest you just send it in.
You should have left the bb in the toilet where it belongs.

Hey now, that was a low blow =P Former Berry Addict myself turned Android Addict =D
Like others have said, patience is key. The last thing you want to do with a wet device is try to run power through it. Take the battery out, let it sit in a warm, dry place for a day or two, then transfer into some rice and see what happens on day 3 or 4. You may still be out of luck, but worth a try.
I had an old Sony Ericcson dumb-phone years ago that I took on a long bike ride on a hot summer day in my rear jersey pocket. After 4 hours of riding and soaking in my sweat it was toast. Used that method and in 3 days it was alive and kicking again =D
Good luck! Maybe you'll end up with a Jesus-Z =P

I'm also coming from a bb phone. That thing was a pain in my balls. Constantly freezing up,not enough memory, took centuries for the thing to boot up & the list goes on & on. Not that I'm bitter about it or anything, just saying. It had it's problems. Sorry if I offended anyone.
Everyone can hate on blackberries but one thing is for sure: they have kick ass battery life.
And that's the only reason why I would get a blackberry. Especially for those camping trips without electricity..

Well this was ~10 years ago and at the time a BlackBerry (957) was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
this is a horrible day for g2 users....R.I.P lmao
Yeah, the BB was a pain in my ass too, but whoever said the battery life was awesome is right. I didnt have a data plan with it, so I never used it to its capacity. Also, If you'd like your personal info synced to your computer only and not Google, then the BB is where it's at. But anyways, did this guy ever ay what he did with the phone?
I resently had my phone dropped in water. My screen seemed a bit off in color. I removed the battery and placed the phone on top if my cable box for a day and it was fine after that.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Ugh, sorry to resurrect this thread, but did that fix it for you? My g2 decided to take a bath in the toilet and the very first thing I did was take the battery out, dry it off with toilet paper as thoroughly as possible (including the sim card, memory and headphone jack slots) prop it with with the keyboard apart and on its side to maximize airflow in front of a fan. I'm going to go to sleep with it like this and hopefully it will turn on tomorrow....
Aha... After my first phone fell in some water, I never ever brought it near anything that could be damaged by water. Lol an advice, don't ever bring your phone when your using the bathroom... leave it on the bed. So yea I paid a lot for my G2 and don't want it f**ked up you know.

Tips for drying a htc one x?

Hi!
I dropped my phone a bucket of water today. Got it up quite quickly and dryed it with compressed air. It turned it self on and off during a period, but now it seems to work fine. But now I have moist behind the camera lens. Any tips for removing moist there?
Leave the phone (Switched off) in a container full of uncooked rice in a warm area. Should do the trick.

Turn the phone off completely from fastboot and put it in a bag of rice, sealed up for 3 days. Do not turn it back on until 3 days have past or you will further damage your phone.
Hello
I have the same problem, but worse. I dropped my OneX in a stream of heavy rain water by the road and its been in the water for about 10 minutes while i was searching for it all over. I was glad I found it and in the haste and panic because its just a couple of weeks old,i pressed the power button,to find it working alright, then the signal reception cut off,i unlocked the screen, turned the airplane mode on. I could do all this and then it went off. I took the Sim out, rushed home, immersed it in a bowl of rice. Would that do? Please help

The most important thing is to NOT power it on again, not for atleast 3-5 days, i'd let it be off for 5 days, in a bag of rice standing on an element(the heat stuff you have in every room). If you turn on the phone before it's all dryed, you will probably damage the internal hardware, you know electric stuff doesn't like water that much.

All i can hope now is that they dont reject for service on my face
The problem esp. with the HOX is that since the battery is sealed in the unit, its not easy to disconnect when needed. So by the time one realises that its been under water, damage might have already been done as the circuits still get a charge from the battery. So like others said, its better to leave it alone in a bowl of rice for a day or so and pray.
Lets hope HTC do the needful and fix your phone...

Hello! I went to the HTC service center after having the OneX in rice for 36hrs. The guy said they cant open it here and so it has to go to the headquarters of India for service and said he'll get back to me in a week or so. Upon asking he told me that a smiliar water damage issue came up to them and when they sent it to the Headquarters, the Head sent a new phone altogether to the guy. Now I have a bit of hope. My missus dropped her iPhone in a bucket of bleach, so it was found 3 hrs later, had to rinse it with water, strip it down, get a tub of rice and put the parts stripped down into tub, the rice draws all the moisture out of the parts. Put it back together after 48 hours and after 1 week everything on screen was A okay, good as new. Always worth doing this yourself to save Money, and insurance claim rise.

Putting my phone in the frigde

I put my nexus in the fridge/frezzer sometimes. That bad??? You know cool it off. Would that damage it???
Gets to hot that my ass would start to burn.
Lol, glad to hear I'm not the only one! Sometimes I do toss it in the fridge for 5-15 minutes after heavy usage. It gets pretty hot and my hands start to sweat.

Tried that. It's get hot again in seconds once it boots. I just shove it in the fridge/freezer while it's on and it cools way faster.
If you let the battery cool by taking it out and it instantly gets hot there is something wrong with your phone.
Putting it in the freezer when it is very hot is also probably a bad idea.

Moisture content.
From a cold place to a warmer place would introduce moisture via condensation. Zap, zap, zap. Wheee!
Depending on duration and durability of course.
Yo could always seal it in a plastic bag and lock out everything else to prevent any moisture from entering.

I wouldn't suggest this, I do inventory for a fast food restaurant and I obviously walk in and out of the freezer in the process
I pulled out my thunderbolt to check something and it was acting laggy so I rebooted
After that it would not boot past the splash screen, but it would boot to the boot loader. If you haven't used a HTC phone before it has an option in the boot loader that displays hardware failures, and wouldnt you know it shorted out something that caused it not to boot
So now I leave my phone outside of the freezer
Also it shouldn't matter if the phone gets hot, it will shut off if its going to harm itself
Unless you are running a kernel with this safety feature disabled

Condensation -> water -> you know what will happen..
Edit:
Condensation -> Water -> Electricity from your battery -> Not pretty.
Aside from condensation...
Hot CPU components that are rapidly cooled and visa-versa = weakening of the solder...
Also going from high heat to very cold could cause rapid contraction of the case and maybe break the screen or something. Taking the battery out seems like a much better solution.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
If the phone is getting so hot you feel that you have to put it in the freezer, then something is wrong with the phone. Try to have it replaced.
The only phone part I ever put in the freezer was my old EVO 4g battery because I accidentally let it run out completely and it would.not charge.

Hello everyone!!
It has been 3 months since I bought my Samsung Galaxy Wonder. With CM9, I enjoy my phone a lot! And it is simply awesome :good: :good:
But because of the same reason. Overuse of my phone. My dad is gonna keep my phone when the next school year starts!! And I may either get back Galaxy Wonder. OR buy a new one in the second term. I still have about a month before school year starts. I know I am quite useless in XDA cause I don't know how to develop things. But I love the XDA Galaxy Wonder thread!!
Now I have a few questions to ask. In case if I really only get my wonder back but not a new phone..:
1) My phone is gonna be kept in a normal room in the Mainland China, Where my dad stays all weekdays. The normal room is with Air-conditioner. And it is not gonna be too wet or somthing. I mean the condition of the room. So after 4 months, second term. when i get it back, will i be able to use it back as normal? Like. Will I be able to normally turn on, and boot normally? cause i am gonna leave it alone for 4 months... really 4 months without turning on
2) For leaving it here 4 months. Will the buttons be functional when i get it back on again? Cause my previous phone was HTC Wildfire S. I dropped it into a big bowl of water and the power button and the volume up button is not working properly after leaving it alone for 3 months. Will the same thing happen to my wonder when i turn it on again? (I have never dropped the wonder into water. Of course I hope I won't drop it into water.. LOL keep it away from my toilet) Please answer I am really worried about it..
Okay. I have one month to go before I really say goodbye to XDA Galaxy Wonder!! And hope somebody can answer my question!! Of course. I am still gonna stick to XDA Galaxy Wonder in term 2 no matter I have W back as daily use, OR a new one. I will miss the XDA Galaxy W thread in these 4 months!
Happy ROM-Flashing.
You mean not usage in 4 months? Thats a long period a time. Im curious too. >=D

Brian, if the room isn't too wet, it will resist the 4 months period. And the buttons will work too. People in clowdy/rainy places use their cellphones and nothing happens. Why shoud your phone damage itself by being still in a normal room?
I'm guessing that after 4 months of inactivity, it will not turn on, because the battery charge is 0%. After you plug it to a charger, the phone should work normally. Why not?

Recommendation from the battery fabrication: charge your battery about 40% - 50% before you store it for long period.
I read it somewhere on internet

Yes, I've read it too. Brian, follow opexblues's advice.
"For long-term storage, manufacturers recommend a 40 percent charge. This allows for some self-discharge while still retaining sufficient charge to keep the protection circuit active. Finding the ideal state-of-charge is not easy; this would require a discharge with appropriate cut-off. Do not worry too much about the state-of-charge; a cool and dry place is more important than SoC. "

Hey
I got two Samsung Star S5230 layin' in a normal Room.
They are layin' there for about 6 Months...
I just turned both on, and they work great.
But I had to charge it before, of course.
It works without a Problem.
I don't think it will "destroy" itself in a normal Room
Good luck tho

Only 40-50? What if I charge it to 100? Is it okay? Cause it is difficult to see if it is 40 while charging

If the experts advise 40-50%, it's better to do that way. Just unplug the charger and see how much battery is available. Or go to battery info or something similar.

If you are worried about water comming to your phone you can always put a small layer of rice under it. so the water won't reach the phone.
Just something i heard though
Gratz
Charge the battery to 40-50%, and remove from the phone.
Put the phone and the battery into two resealable plastic bags.
Put the two plastic bags into a big plastic bag, fill the big bag with Silica Gel *or* other desiccant.
Seal the big bag until it's waterproof, airproof if possible.

My Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded last night while I was sleeping

well not mine actually, but check the link. this is the first im hearing of anything like this...discuss
This is my first time posting so cut me some slack! Also not sure if this is the best place to post this.
Last night at about 3:15am EST (about 1 hour after i plugged it in and went to sleep) I was awoken by a loud noise and a weird squeaking sound. (I charge my phone while I'm sleeping on my bed right next to me)
So, I woke up, and saw a ton of smoke coming out of my phone -- it also smelled REALLY bad. Half asleep, I jumped out of bed and turned the light on, only to see that my phone was just beginning to go on fire. I dumped a glass of water I had in the room on it to stop it from burning...then woke up my brother to come help. The smoke smelled so bad and wafted through the entire second floor of my house. I had a foam mattress pillow top that had a hole burned through it too--which we later threw out because it was still burning throughout. Also, some of the plastic on my phone was melting and kind of shooting out of it, and some landed on my pinky finger and burned some skin off (very small burn though).
Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? Call Verizon? Samsung? Have a lawyer call them? I'd also like to get some type of replacement phone in the meantime...
Here are the pictures
EDIT: People keep requesting pictures of the battery. Here they are
ALSO: To answer many questions: EVERYTHING was stock/Samsung that I had received when I purchased my phone. Stock battery, charger, etc. Additionally, my phone was NOT rooted.
Edit 2: Thanks so much for all of your comments and insight. The real big question here is -- Do you think I have an actual legal case? As in, a product liability case. Or, do you think I'm better off taking what the PR team will give me? (Perhaps, a new phone, new mattress, etc)? I did not suffer any TRULY substantial damages to myself or personal property. I am really tossed up on this...Any advice would be appreciated.

The comments people are leaving are hilarious lol, doesn't surprise me too much with how hot I've felt some devices getting. He probably installed a fart app or something lol. Sucks but Samsung should pay for everything the guy states like mattress and phone and such.

He should sue the hell out of them because they can afford it, the burn to his hand alone will easily net him a 4 figure cheque.
Kinda makes me hope my phone catches on fire now lol

If there's even a case. Sounds like he just wants to be reimbursed for the phone and damage done to his bed. It also sounds like he doesn't even care about the burn to his finger.
If he does file a lawsuit, I sure hope his phone was stock (I have no idea how they would check now) and that he was using the stock battery. I'm sure samsung is going to bring up the wall charger and micro usb cable as well.

Im sorry, but in my opinion, things like this shouldnt always warrant a lawsuit. Does anybody really think that Samsung is guilty of wrongdoing here? Yeah it sucks and is scary that it happened, but just file an insurance claim to replace the bed and phone and move on with life.
How many GS3s have been sold now, plus all the extra batteries and only one has done this? Pretty good if you ask me.
Sounds like it was probably just a faulty battery or something like that.
Anyway, like I said its just my opinion and thought id share it.

I couldn't even tell that was still the battery since it had warped and expanded so much due to the explosion....now I'm not going to charge my S3 right next to my head when I sleep.
Reimbursement I vote in the least, I mean what's a "600$" phone gonna be for them lol, I assume it was a faulty battery I've read that before about it melting a case

I'm scared of my phone now.. Won't be charging it on my bed anymore...

Seems like in both cases of exploding iPod Touches, a lawsuit against Apple followed:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/digitalmusic/apple-sued-after-ipod-touch-exploded-in-boys-trousers-49301555/
http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/02/apple-sued-for-exploding-ipod-touch.html
This actually happened to me also so I know what he is going through. I set my phone down to charge. I woke up about an hour later to a plastic burning smell. I grabbed my phone and it was literally melting. Not on fire, just extremely hot and I ended up burning my fingers. I immediately pulled the battery out. Let it cool off (the smell didn't go away) and then it powered back on and has been charging normally ever since. It's kinda scary to think what would happen if I didn't wake up and notice my phone almost blowing up.

What firmware and ROM are you running?
I don't think he has an S3. All of his other posts are for the Note2.

Wasn't aware they got the 4.1.2 update. That's a bmer though on all accounts. I live in Phoenix AZ and we see nothing but triple digits from may til august and I've never felt burnt by my phone, I'm lucky to have resistant skin I guess.

Oh yes they got it months ago. But this happened while charging, in the air conditioning. So there was no reason for it to be that hot. When I turned it on there was no program in the battery list which was eating up the battery so it is very strange.
