[Q] Ram shortage? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running a 4.2.1 JB rom with a 2.6.38.8 evervolv-dives-jellybean kernal and I'm having problems with what acts like RAM shortage problems where a game or program will just close as if its overloading the ram. Is there a way to reallocate more of the stock memory to be used as system RAM or should I try a different kernal?

Use less apps. Android kills apps when it's low on memory. You can't magically allocate more memory than the device has.

[Q] What depends on how much RAM your device have free?

Hi,
i have used sevaral ROM, with difrent storage mods and all different roms have difrent size of free RAM - (after app killing), all betwen 200 - 260, now i use a data++ rom and i have only ~200ram avilable and 95% of apps are on SDcard, my prewios rom was a D2SD and it had ~250 RAM free after killing.
From what depends on how much free RAM your ROM have?
It depends on the apps and services running in the background.
Sure, but in both roms i killed all runig apps with task killer and end up proces under Running services, i only left (obex, touch input and killer service), but the result was different in different roms.. (250 vs 200 free), whats the reason for the difference?

How much space did you have on both ROMS after the first initial boot?
By their nature, Data++ ROMS require modifying the system partition to allow for more internal memory (so you are relatively limited in how much you can assign- upto about 330MB using the Oxygen Hboot table), whereas DataSD ROM's available space is largely determined by how much space you allocate on your SD card to it (anything upto 1.5GB with some ROMs).
Generally you will have less internal memory available on a Data++ ROM than a Data2SD. But on the Data++, performance is far better than D2SD.
I dont know the space after the first boot, but the internal memory in the data++ rom is larger because of the costom MTD, than the stock MTD.
But i still dont understand what depends on the RAM mamery size avilable after killing and stooped process?
For exemple:
AraxTsenseHD had ~250 free memory after killing
RCMIX HD data ++ has ~200 free memory a. k.
LeDroid had about ~200 free and also RCMX S had ~200 free
Depends the free ram on the setings of each ROM or what makes the difference?
It depends on the services running and the ram needed by the system.

[Q] Save RAM

Hey Guys,
is there a way to save RAM ?
I'm using this Rom & I have only 79Mb free of RAM.
I tried zeppelinrox V6 SuperCharger
But it doesn't work.
so does anybody know an other way ?
Hmm and a question,is tehre a way to disable Sense 3.0 Task-manager ? cause maybe V6 SuperCharger doesn't work,cause of task-manager(maybe he kills it)
JuLiian
no need to think about the ram handling. when its going to be full (mean few MB), android will free some ram
One thing you should know about Android is that it takes care of itself when it comes to freeing RAM and all that. Using task killers and RAM optimizers can do more harm than be helpful. I wouldn't worry about not having much RAM available since Android frees RAM for you when it gets a little low. Maybe check for apps running in the background.
Two excellent guides which support meaples opinion:

Thanks for your awnser.
I never looked about Ram,but with this rom i have only 70MB free and sometimes the rom feels very slow. And a friend of mine had the same problem and he used this script and it works very well for him,so I thought I could trie this ,too

[Q] Which custom ROM offers the best ram management?

Is there a particular rom which offers better ram management to allow for apps to stay in the memory longer, and cached apps get less priority?
I'm getting annoyed of apps that are suppose to be running all the time in the notification bar, but they are constantly restarting because the ram gets too low, but in fact, there is enough ram, but it's being taken up by cached apps instead!
Maybe I'm asking too much. Are there ROMS which:
1) offer more ram by being "trim"
2) manage memory better for multitasking
I really wanted to keep this phone stock, but this is pathetic! I feel that my old phone, with a "huge" 256mb ram chip was able to run more software in the background than my GN is! I've stripped all the useful apps off this phone and memory management is still an issue.
isn't the kernel responsible for that and not the rom?

Good question. I figured some roms are made lighter by removing stuff on it you don't need, and when it's done on a system level, I assumed that less ram would be needed for the os to operate.
Maybe someone can explain this?

I mean yeah, to a extent.. I'd believe that ROM and Kernel both contributes to it but kernel is the bigger player when it comes to optimizing "RAM."
I use AOKP + Franco Kernel if that helps. No lag problems, never even had it when it came to stock ICS. You'd might want to check your apps and see if there's a bad app causing memory leaks.

AOKP and a few other roms have the option to change the minimum ram before android os starts killing background apps. The default is about 80MB I believe. You can decrease it (do not forget to check set on boot), but I do not think it is recommended to go too low.
If you are having low memory issues its probably because of a rogue app. Install System Tuner and check for background apps that use more than ~10-20MB of memory.

The stock ram management and how to change minfree

Hi there. I have read a lot about android ram management, and that free ram is wasted ram. And I agree with that. My question is - why is my stock ics arc killing apps to constantly keep at least 140MB of ram free? The result is that multitasking is pretty much nonexistent on this device.
A follow up question is, how to change this behaviour and stay on stock rom? Minfree apps from play store don't do a thing.
Thanks!

Have you tried running the V6 Supercharger script? I've heard it works on all ROMs.

i use stock 2.3.4 rom. I would not change rom because of my SE liveview that is not fully compatible with a non-stock rom
Besides, in Android, unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Yes but i can't play a game because when i start the app, the free ram becomes about 80 mb that is absolutely not enough to play a game smoothly
for getting good gaming experience in xperia play you shoul download light roms and you need to install lupus gb kernel and overclock to 1.4-1.6
there is no other way

I'm already running lupus gb kernel and already overcklocked to 1.4. What do you mean with "light roms"?
the roms that dont have many ram eating apps
for example gin2jellybean 1.9.8 is one of them
aurora play is great in gaming too and it too nice
but there are some problem with gb roms so i recommend krissdee hybrid rom
im using it now
for now i stayed on it for some hours its very good record for me(i cant use stock based ics roms more than 1 hour)

just saw your profile..indeed you are nice to know im not alone in the xda universe
80mb of free ram means there's 80mb that the game could be using, while it isn't.

No, android will kill apps starting with the oldest to give the game more RAM.

Hi, i have this problem too before. Which class of sd card your using?
If you have sd card class 4 then dont move the game to sd or just install it to internal memory.
I dont know if this help but you should try it. Now i have no lag when playing games like mc4,asphalt7,hoc,real racing3,etc.
Im on aurora play, smartass2 1.2 ghz+sio.
