Root crew... - Verizon HTC One (M7)

OK so I switched to Verizon because of service issues in my area... I couldn't turn down a serious device like this so I just went head first...
A little background...
I have an atrix 2 which has been on serious lock down since day one... We have safestrap and kexec to enable us to essentially freeze the bootloader, and boot our own kernels and recovery... I've done a lot of work on this device (not safestrap or kexec, that's all thanks to @Hashcode and his team...)
I also regularly build mokee for the gtab2, a cm10.2 based Chinese variant... A very nice ROM... So I have a dedicated build station set up...
So a little more in depth...
I'm in a rather lucky situation:
I have a stock Verizon HTC one
I also have my previous phone for the next three weeks
Kicker: my gf has a stock HTC one as well....
So here's what I'm thinking...
I can send my phone to get s-off and use my other phone till I get it back
I can use gf phone for testing
My goals:
First and foremost, root for non s-off one owners
Second, root access to the cid, allowing HTC dev unlock
Third, and only if we can't find a workaround for the cid, try and port safestrap to our device so we can hijack the boot process, therefore allowing us to do whatever we want...
What I'm looking for:
A group of people to help me, I've only had rooted devices to work with in the past, but code is code... We work together, and heck, if we manage to crack this, you guys can keep the bounty, I just want everyone to be able to mod this bad bad phone as they see fit....
Time to get cracking...

Ask devs you know, search for possible 4.2.2 holes, post it on your Twitter and such.... %$ck the money, this phone is baddass and deserves mokee or cm or pa or whatever other crap we wanna do with it. So... When is it going to be done?

Not to rain on this, but I was offering to ship my One to devs for the purpose of achieving s-off/ bootloader unlock and I didnt get any responses from interested devs. I posted in vzw one and general htc one forums offering it and no one contacted me. It seems like there isnt really interest from devs. I dont know if its because of the anticipation of a looming update and not wanting to risk it getting patched but there doesnt seem to be interest.
I do with you the best of luck with this, Just warning you not to get your hopes up.

Pretty certain that it won't unlock. It isn't GB, but it'll be nice to have some bug fixes.

No, I know. I'm just saying that the OTA isn't an update to GB. It'll still be 2.2.
Maybe its a preperation patch for a future bootloader patch. Or just a bug fix patch yea.. either way anything is better than nothing!
This maybe still just rumor but some one in fascinate forum posted they looked earlier in Twitter postings and said it maybe GB. Honestly don't think it is either but we'll see when it come.

please let it be a GB/unlocked bootloader combo~ PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE~
but back to reality, it's likely going to be a froyo with an unlocked bootloader, that would be my guess

Why doesn't the Inc2 just jump on GB? Will this just be 2.2.2? Hopefully, the extra .1 will be more than just bugfixes.

It could still be Android 2.2.1 with HTC software bug fixes (ie: for sense/rosie).
This already reminds me of the old Eris forums and rumors of 2.1 for the longest time

[IDEA] Port international firmware/ROM's to Sprint Note 2?

Considering the similarities between the domestic variants of the Note 2 and their international counterparts, would anyone be willing to test some of the success that the folks over in the AT&T forum have had with porting the international N7100/N7105 firmware/ROM's over to the Sprint Note 2
Check out these two threads over in the AT&T forum and see what you all think:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
The basic gist of the procedure is to use a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP to flash a stock N7100/N7105 firmware, and then flash your carrier specific modem/kernel.
Why would anyone want to do this? Well, for starters, you would benefit from built-in stock-supported tethering, and a few other features that carriers disable (YMMV). But mainly this means that the domestic versions of the Note 2 can benefit from the development of the international versions! So, when the latest version of Android comes out for the rest of the world, we aren't stuck here waiting for our carrier to catch up to everyone else...
So what do you all think? Anyone willing to try?
Clarification: Just so everyone is on the same page here, I want to stress that, while this process is successful on both the AT&T and T-Mobile GN2's, this is VERY dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I would NOT recommend anyone try this unless you are confident in your abilities to recover from a brick situation.
Again, if you are even REMOTELY interested in trying this out on your own, don't even think about bothering with it unless you absolutely know what you are doing! I take no responsibility for any bricks that come from someone trying this without the proper experience and know-how. You have been warned!
it works on the ATT variant because it and the international are both GSM. We are CDMA, i doubt that it would be as easy. Using verizon ROMs might be a different story though.

See, I'm not so sure. At least this time around, the radio's are pretty much the only major differences, and those can be governed by the kernel and modem.bin, so if anyone's willing to try it, it could be well worth a try!

This thread is dangerous, dont normally say that, but PLEASE dont encourage (or even put the idea in peoples heads) that they should flash something for a different phone. What you described is NOT porting. Your asking for a brick flashing different firmware. And why dont YOU try it then get back to us....on your computer, cus your phone will be a paperweight

There has to be, at least, a dev developed tool that will convert 1 notes rom to another. That way a dev can create a rom, then easily spread it to all devices.
I can't imagine making a script or modifying a kitchen to output for the slight differences between phone would be that difficult.

You know, I'm not even a Sprint subscriber. I don't own the Sprint GN2. I have absolutely nothing to gain by sharing an idea with all of you. If you think it's a stupid idea, fine, but there's no reason to be an @$$hole about it either.
Now this could turn out one of two ways. Either you're right, and it was a stupid idea, for not working on CDMA GN2's, but at least we tried and now we know for sure -OR- my idea works, maybe with a little finagling, but still possible, and now (with some help) I've just opened up the door for domestic users to take advantage of the development being done around the world; something you've rarely, if ever, been able to do... You're welcome.
So yeah, don't be an @$$hole.

Should he lie and say your idea is good? would that make you feel better? It won't work. The partitions between the Note variants are different. It not the same as the S3's. Just because you don't understand that doesn't make him an asshole. Also if you are going to curse people out, have the balls to actually spell it correctly

Ask anyone that has ever flashed a rom from a different carrier how it worked out for them... Only result I have ever heard of is brick. So forgive me for not kissing your ass because of your stupid idea. The people that are capable of porting roms have either already thought of it and it's not that easy, or its out of the realm of possibility at this point. So all your doing is putting useless thoughts into the heads of people who won't know any better and end up effing their phones. So go suck a boner

This is posible but is not like flashing att rom and putting sprint modem. You got to configure the rom to make it cdma, I remember back in the htc evo days they made t mobile my touch compatible and others htc European with sense 2.1 compatible, only issue was no 4G

Anyone still on the OG?

hey XDA is anyone still on a contract with the evo 4g?
the section seems dead.
No contract for me I am a flashed phone user. The Og section is still very much alive and kicking with new roms and updates coming out on a regular basis. If you think this is you should look at some of the others. While the 3vo is my daily phone I still have service on my Og sort of. It is harder to test my builds on a phone with no service since you cant check the major things like voice/data/mms without it. Keep your eye out cause I am working on several source builds. Rootbox, baked 9, and sourcery for the Og.

I passed my OG on to my son when I upgraded to the EVO LTE back in the fall. He hasn't managed to lose it or break it...yet

Need to know your hboot info. If you don't know how to get it. Power down. Once off. Hold power and volume down buttons together. You should go into hboot. Read back all the info and we could help you from there.

Kinda funny you should say that, that's the same day my contract is up. I'm also probably going to the HTC One, but I might go to AT&T, we'll see what happens.
What I am going to miss the most is smelkus recovery, not gonna find a better and more reliable recovery...period.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
4ext recovery is a great one. Full touch and everything works every time. On the 3vo we have twrp (aroma will not work correctly), cwm (well its cwm what else to say), then 4ext which is the best for everything. So while you say you will miss smelkus you will find something just as good if not better. Don't get me wrong nothing is better for the Og but each device is different therefore each one has its "best" recovery.

Can a Verizon HTC One with 4.4.2 OTA be rooted yet?

The 25th of February was the last time I asked this, and it's been a week and a day since then, so I figured that its an appropriate time to ask.
Can a stock Verizon HTC One (the standard One, not Max, not Mini, not dual-SIM) running stock Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA be rooted yet?
Thanks,
Andrew

Nope. You'll see a thread pop up when its possible. Just scan around the Verizon HTC One forums. When an update happens there's usually chatter in the Rumrunner thread.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
It'll happen when it happens. I want to root my phone as much as the next guy, particularly so that the titanium backup app I paid good money for will have a purpose, but having previously come from a sprint gs II, the "stock" version of this phone is leagues ahead of others I've seen. Root is almost unnecessary.

I agree with you 99%. In fact the only reason I want to root this phone is so I can install adaway.
Tethering
I need root to tether as the 4.4.2 update killed Foxfi. There is no way in HELL I am paying $30 to Verizon just to tether my phone to my computer (I have unlimited data)

Not to mention you would also lose you unlimited data if you did go with Verizon's service. I'm in the same boat, my Foxfi got killed with the update and I considered paying for the mobile hotspot feature but said hell no to giving up my unlim data.

Can't agree with you. Verizon installs a bunch of unneeded software which just drains your battery. Also you can't create a hot-spot. That's ridiculous - they're taking money for a built-in android feature. So having root gives you a real advantage of re-flashing your device with custom firmware and getting rid of all the limitations Verizon put on you.

You can disable most of the bloat software. Just go into your settings, go to app manager, go to all and tap on whatever you want to disable. It will make it like the app was never there.

That doesn't exactly fix the problem of the apps taking up valuable space. I kinda agree with both of you. I think that without root this phone, unlike the S4 and others, is mostly enjoyable and still smooth. However, with root it just adds a nice amount of gravy. I like being able to perform nandroids/flash firmwares/etc, use Titanium Backup, flash any rom I please with useful features (like double tap to wake so I don't have to use the poorly placed power button), use Xposed modules, use Adaway, use emulators with a PS3 controller, etc etc.
Root vs not rooted is irrelevant to the OP. The OP wants root.
I highly recommend checking with sonic or checking with mobile tech videos.
It is probably possible to downgrade the firmware to make the phone vulnerable to S-off
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2
Disagree with those who say rooting is unnecessary. It is like opening a window to endless opportunities on your phone , sort of like Alice through the Looking Glass. It is very worth it. I have been rooted since version 4.2 and to me defines the very concept of Android being open source. Verizon tries to limit the Android like Apple does to the iPhone.

It's not possible to downgrade firmware..unless, of course, you're s-off. If there's a way to achieve s-off for the VZW HTC One on 4.4.2, it will be seen here in the VZW HTC One forums. There's a new thread everyday asking the same question.

I'm 100% positive you can't downgrade firmware. Sonics java card is the only other possibility. Don't think anyone has had any luck contacting him, though (check out the java card s-off thread). I know I tried before 4.3 was exploited. If mobile tech videos had a method, you would have seen a thread somewhere in this forum.
Basically all I was getting at is that if there's a way to achieve s-off on 4.4.2, there would be chatter here.

No offense, but you are saying neither Sonic nor Mobile Tech Videos have been contacted...
Therefore, your conclusion that it is not possible to downgrade firmware is based on nothing.
Like I said, until I see it from the horses mouth, it is still a possibility. Sonic has achieved S-off for many people and I haven't seen anything to tarnish his good reputation. The Java card will likely work on the latest update.
I do not speak for Sonic nor Mobile Tech Videos. Until either party provides a confirmation themselves, I WILL NOT FALSLEY CONCLUDE IT IS AN IMPOSSIBILITY.
People said the exact and thing about the VZW Note 2. AS IT TURNS OUT, Mobile Tech Videos can downgrade the firmware on the VZW Note 2 with JTag. They confirmed when they were emailed. They charge 75$ for the valuable service.
You may be correct in that there is currently no cost free method to downgrade the firmware on the VZW HTC One on the latest OTA.

I'm s-off so I don't really care what you come up with. But I'm not just BS'ing. It would be great if people had the option to downgrade firmware so hopefully you can prove me wrong (since you're calling BS on the ability to downgrade...the java card gets you s-off, it doesn't downgrade your firmware. You're only hope is mobile tech to prove me wrong).
Anyways, bickering is even more useless than calling BS with nothing to back it up. I really do wish you luck...it would make a lot of people happy.

Mobile Tech Videos confirmed that they can indeed S-off any, including Kitkat 4.4.2 OTA, VZW HTC One units.
They are charging $75.
No response from the PayPal email address that was used for the transaction with Sonic's S-off procedure. Not yet, anyway.
Mobile Tech Videos has a good reputation and I'm confident they will be true to their word.
Also, there is a new thread unveiling Jcases's root method for 4.4.2 to be unveiled in August.
Certainly not definitive, but I tried numerous times without success to contact Sonic about the java card S-off... I tried PM, text message, tweet, and email with no response. As, I am one of the unlucky ones with the 4.4.2 OTA, I may try the Mobile Tech Videos... anyone ever used them for an HTC Verizon device?

Just when i was losing faith. . .
Quick Question:
If I'm currently on 98.18.78 (rooted & gsm unlocked) and cannot take the ota (i think because of the root method i used?) would it be better to rsd to the 98.30.1 stock rom and wait for the kk ota? or should i just wait for an sbf of the new kk?
Thanks

The latest soak test mails for some minor bugfixes on the Droid 4 were sent on Jan 3, the update was already available on Jan 8.
So, five days in this case.
