[Q] Help reverting to stock rom - HTC One X

Hello I have HTC One X, which I have bought second hand (unfortunately). Turns out it was rooted, and ran on a custom rom. I wanted to revert to stock rom, but I think I have messed up. Now I am stuck in bootloader. I think I already have all the files I need, but it seems I have no longer access to my phone on the PC, so I can not transfer files to the (non-removable)'SD Card'. When trying to flash using cmd, I get the error FAILED <remote: not allowed>
I have used the factory reset in the bootloader, and have unrooted the phone, and re-locked the bootloader.(at the time I thought I had the right RUU but I only have a CWM backup)
Can anyone help me?

Have you done everything the tutorial says?
At what exact step did you get this error? You have to be more precise.
If you are stuck at bootloader, you should be able to flash recovery (after you re-unlock the bootloader) and then, from recovey, you can mount your internal sd card to be accessed from the PC via USB cable.
You also have to have the required drivers installed to properly run fastboot commands, as explained in the tutorial.

It's quite easy btw,
Download nandroid backup for your CID from here &
Just flash any recovery like CWM or TWRP which will mount ur device's USB Storage to pc.
now, just follow the steps to restore that backup into the phone, u'll be on complete stock!
Also, you can flash the particular RUU for your device, if available can be found here
Installing RUU doesn't require anything to be done on phone, just connect it to pc, it'll take care of the rest.

How exactly do you match the RUU CID? I don't see the cid on the filenames there. Mine is HTC_203

This seems like it should work. How do I re-unlock the bootloader? Because my only problem is, that I can not mount my internal sd card, and I think it is because the phone in re-locked...

Get your unlock token from htcdev,
and use fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_Code.bin command in fastboot.
Then just look at ur phone, use volume up key to move up and power button to select.
Phone will reboot and bootloader will be unlocked, also it will factory reset the phone!

You can unlock your bootloader by using THIS TUTORIAL or with THIS TOOL which does the same thing basically.

[Q] Fastboot and recovery problems

Hi,
I tried to flash the standard HTC RUU so that i could send it in for repair.
It said that it couldn't flash and gave me error code 140.
Now whenever i turn on my phone it goes straight to fastboot mode which i think means there is no rom on the phone.
However the RUU overwrote my recovery and i dont have an sd reader to put a recovery update.zip on the sd card.
I want to do this so i can try and flash a rom to allow me to boot and try the RUU again.
Is there any way i can either copy files to the sd card or flash a recovery img from hboot, fastboot or recovery?
i tried using "fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img" but it just hangs the terminal, any idea why?
Thanks
this looks like it could help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531310
can anyone clarify where exactly i enter the commands.
Im in recovery (black screen with red triangle).
thanks
Not sure if that will help but you enter those commands through ABD in the CMD terminal on your PC.
I'm not sure on this but your fastboot flash might be hanging because your file might need to be in your tools folder within your Android SDK folder.
no that didnt help. I think im gonna have to wait until tomorrow and buy a card reader
thanks
With flashing an ruu you are s-on and you cannot use fastboot any more.
Make a goldcard with linux (as far as i understand you cannot boot into your phone's os any more):
http://www.nazriawang.com/2010/04/how-to-create-goldcard-with-ubuntu.html
Then put this in your desire and try to flash ruu again. It should work now.
I know that i can use the RUU because i've used it before. I think it failed because i was S off (im not sure how i was meant to S on first). I think i need to:
1. copy update.zip to sd card with a recovery in it, and a rooted rom
2. boot to recovery via update.zip
3. flash a rooted rom
4. boot into rom and then flash RUU using the exe
Is this correct? as far as i know i have to be in android to use the RUU, is this correct? If i could flash it from recovery it would save me doing step 3.
thanks
Sorry, but i do not understand you...
Please answer these questions first:
Can you boot into clockworkmod or amonra recovery?
Can you start your rom?
Which hboot do you use?
And flashing failed because of cid error i think? So why don't you create goldcard and try to flash ruu again? The programm will tell exactly what to do.
no, i can only get into the blue basic recovery. This is why i need to put update zip onto the sd card so i can access amonra.
I cant start my rom. when i turn it on normally it goes straight to the fastboot screen with 3 androids at the bottom.
HBOOT is 0.80.0000
Flashing didnt fail because of CID error because i brought my phone unlocked and i have used this exact same RUU before (its the standard HTC signed one). i dont understand how a goldcard would help as i need to be booted into a rom before i can flash the RUU. I dont think i can do it from recovery?
Thanks
"I know that i can use the RUU because i've used it before. I think it failed because i was S off (im not sure how i was meant to S on first). I think i need to:"
You don't have to be S-ON to be able to flash a RUU. The actual RUU will override anything you have done to "jailbreak" your phone: ROOT, S-OFF, Custom HBOOT, Custom Recovery (Amon RA or CWM) and restore you to basic (you'll have none of the above). This is why it is used.
If you have tried to flash the RUU and get the error, you are more than probably not ROOT-ed and S-OFF anymore so you can't install a CUSTOM ROM. This is what makes the problems even harder.
The error you got: Error 140 is Bootloader version error.
Read the second post from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880268 and try to extract the PB99IMG.zip from your RUU and try to flash it from card in boot.
EDIT: Also be sure (I don't know how ) if the RUU you got has the same bootloader version as your phone. I read that this is a kind of incompatibility if it is lower than your version.
You should get the latest WWE 2.29.405.5 RUU. I think this should be compatible. Extract the PB99 and put it on root of SD.
LEDIT: if you want to mount your SD card try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531310. Maybe it helps you.
Ive tried it with RUU RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
It gives me an error "Main version is older!"
do you think this means i should try the newer version you recommended or the older version (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe)
Thanks for your help
That has worked perfectly with the RUU you recommended. I will be keeping that image on my SD card to avoid this happening again.
Thanks

[Q] Completely wiped my One X, cannot mount usb, no backups, need backups

Hello everybody,
This is my first post on XDA, although I've visited the site oftne
Anyways:
Yesterday I successfully rooted my One X and unlocked its bootloader. I also installed CWM recovery.
As the day came to a close I tried to install LC_MOD in an attempt to change the multitasking softkey to a menu button.
I did not make a backup, and the phone had no backups.
Needless to say the phone wouldnt boot. I panicked and in blind fear sortof erased everything off of my phone. everything. What I basically did was i went into advanced settings and formatted my /sdcard and all those other folders, hoping that would solve the issue (a simple data/cache wipe didnt work). So much data has been erased from the phone that I cannot even mount usb storage through CWM because im missing a file.
So, I come to you all, you gods of the tech world, with my head bowed, to ask for your help. I have literally tried everything in my power to fix the issue. I tried to install custom roms manually, that didnt work. I tried to install an RUU, and even that didnt work (the software could not detect my device). This was all made even more difficult because I myself have a mac, and much of the software I had to use was windows based, which led me on a journey to create a virtual machine.
I know i messed up, and what I'm really hoping someone out there cn do is upload one of their own backups of their One X's software, and show me how to use that to restore my phone.
Somebody out there please please help me :'(
Hi;
There is a reason all developers here shout out loud:
1- BACKUP YOUR PHONE BEFORE YOU F*** IT UP
2- DO NOT DO ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY KNOW HOW TO
But anyways, you ruined it, you should get it back, Hopefully you did not drain the battery below 30%, in that case keep on reading the next paragraph, but if you dropped the battery below 30, you should go to CWM Recovery, connect your phone to charger, and wait until it's charged properly...
After charging the phone, you need the correct RUU for your phone... As it seems, you don't know what you're doing, so go to fastboot, type this command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
Then post the code here in this topic, so someone can help you find the correct RUU for your phone...
After that go to THIS topic and follow the part where it says "If you DON'T have custom rom or Nandroid backup on internal SD card"
Thanks
Thanks a bunch bro!! And ye i get that it was completely my fault. I normally do backup before i do anything, but i guess i was just a bit too anxious. And I think you've told me everything i need to know, ill get that code out to you asap... And you're right, i seriously have no clue what im doing ^.^, I've never F***ed up this hard on any phone before

Your phone is from Voda Germany, and most probabely your correct RUU is this:
Code:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/t7qugfd3ey9/n/RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_Vodafone_CH-DE_1.26.166.2_Radio_1.1204.90.13_release_251279_signed.exe
Download it. Hopefully it would be the correct RUU for your phone.
1- Now open the exe file you just downloaded and make sure that it fully started.
2- Don't click anything, just open "Computer" (formerly known as my computer) in windows and enter %temp% in your address bar.
3- You will now see some folders, just search through these folders for the ROM.zip (using windows search function)
4- When you found it, copy it to your desktop.
5- Extract it with WinRar,7-zip or something like that and take the boot_signed.img and system.img.
6- Now copy the two files into the folder where the fastboot.exe is placed (if you have installed the Android SDK, it should be in platform-tools)
7- Go to your One X, go into the bootloader and go into fastboot mode. then connect your phone to computer.
8- Open CMD and navigate to the folder in which you have the two images and the fastboot file. (using cd command and after that the address you want to go to)
9- Now type in that
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot_signed.img
10- Now this one
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
if all this is successful, you can just reboot your phone and everything is OK.
If you can't do any of these, let us now, we will help you through it...
Good lock

In other note, RUUs are build to do an stand alone recovery of your phone. So you can first try, just running the RUU application and following the instruction given in the RUU. it may work correctly
This is good
Alright so i got everything going after downloading the RUU and it was in the process of restoring my phone, but then it said my battery went below 30% so i needed to recharge. At that point i had to leave, and so I noticed that if i left my phone in the booting animation (HTC logo) the LED light indicated that the phone was charging. Since I wasnt entirely convinced that my CWM recovery was actually charging the phone, i left it on booting while connected to my pc and hopefully itll be fully charged and ready to be restored tomorrow..... I really appreciate all the help you've given me man you've practically saved my life here , and I'd like to say that you've made my first cry for help a simple and smooth one.... Thank you very much my friend :victory: :highfive:
Problem
Ok so we have a new problem, the system.img file didnt flash. I tried and it said "FAILED"
What now??
& is the boot image supposed to only be around 4300 kb?
Could the sending of "system" failed because my phone had less than 30% batterylife???? & if its in Clockworkmod recovery5.8.4 while connected to an outlet will it be charging???
Edit: I've searched around and I saw this one guy who extracted the "boot_signed.img" and the "recovery_signed.img" (NOT the system.img), flashed them onto his phone, locked the bootloader with "fastboot oem lock", and then RAN the RUU..... He said he bricked his phone, and the situation he described is similar to mine. Any thoughts on which method of the two (yours and his) i should use?
Thanks again :3

That's another method you can try, boot_signed is the stock kernel (and yes it's that small) and the recovery_signed is the stock recovery...
Since my previously mentioned method didn't work, do this:
1- flash the boot_signed.img into your device (fastboot flash boot boot_signed.img)
2- flash the recovery_signed.img in the device (fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img)
3- erase cache (fastboot erase cache)
4- lock your phone (fastboot oem lock)
5- now try again to flash the system image (fastboot flash system system.img)
And also, try having around 40% battery to do all this, don't let the battery drops under 30%
ALRIGHT!!!!
alright man!!!! that sounds like a plan... First thing tomorrow I'm going to try this method out.... and btw the RUU you linked me wasnt exactly working right (the software kept saying i had the wrong ruu), so i searched around and found someone with the same CID (VODAP102) and apperantly the uk RUU works fine on it, so i guess ill use that one ye? And btw does the bootloader have to be unlocked before i can flash these items? because i do believe its locked atm....

Your phone is "Vodafone Germany" version and the link I gave you is the "Voda DE" which seems right, but you can try that as well, doesn't heart...
No, for original ROM (RUU) you should have a locked boot-loader, unlocking is just for custom ROMs.
ok
ok so this is what ill do tomorrow:
1) make sure bootloader is unlocked
2) fastboot flash boot boot_service.img
3) fastboot flash recovery recovery_service.img
4) fastboot oem lock
5) fastboot flash system system.img
did i get everything?

The two first commands should work on a LOCKED boot-loader, so I think step 1 would not be necessary... If your phone is locked you should be able to do all steps 2, 3, 5 without problem (step 1 and 4 are the exact opposite of each other and if the phone is locked already I think can be skipped)
ok so its still not working.... I managed to flasht he boot_signed.img and the recovery_signed.img, clear cache and lock the bootloader after it, but i still cannot seem to flash the damn system.img... Any thoughts?
what happens is command prompt stays static for a second and then says sending 'system' (1000596 KB)

Any luck in running the RUU itself directly?
i gave up
alright so nothig worked. Not the manual flash, and not the RUU itself. So ive resolved to visit my local help center for HTC devices, and see what they can do, if they cant fix it the least they can do is send it to the german branch for repairs. Thanks for all your help mate, you've really proven to be a great guide, but I guess something just isnt clicking in this case :/.......... i love u man
I'm not sure if this would work.
If you are still htcdev unlocked:
1. Enter bootloader in fastboot usb
2. Fasboot flash recovery -your recovery .img here"
3. Boot into recovery
4. Go to "mounts and storage"
5. Mount SD(I think this is right) and your sd should show up in your pc
6. Copy your rom zips and other zips you need/want
7. Unmount SD
8. By this time you should be able to flash your rom
9. Make sure you flash boot.img again in bootloader.
Hope this helps

You couldn't mount the USB storage / sdcard because you were running CWM from the bootloader. If you connect it to the pc you can put the recovery file you flashed into the fastboot folder and do:
fastboot boot *recoveryfilename*.img
Then you can mount the sdcard etc.
If you have photos and things you don't want an ruu to get ride of, you can fix the ROM. You broke it by trying to install an deodrexed mod for an odexed Rom. If you're interested I can tell you how to fix it.
You could also take this opportunity to install a custom Rom, with which I can also help.

Hi
Take the sdcard out of the phone and check and see if you have access to the volume buttons again. If so does your hoot have a factory reset option? Should be forth one down if it does.
Your hboot is not htcdev unlockable, but you can attain s-off if we can get it to boot. If the factory reset is not an option try booting into recovery, mash all the buttons until the recovery text options come up and factory reset from there, then report back here

That is whole world's of not good. That means that the area in the bootloader holding the information about the phone, and more likely how to boot is corrupted. The only way to try get out of this at this point is going to need another android phone. You will need to make what's called a gold card, which will format your sdcard making it into a special sdcard which commands htc phones to ignore CID. Once you have this we can attempt to flash a ruu update with a bootloader update and hope that it fixes the issue. But if it fails your only other option aside from getting htc to fix it (unlikely for free) will be to pay to use an xtc clip, force the device to become s-off and them flash several bootloaders in the hope that one works. Let me know what you want to do next pal.

But if it fails your only other option aside from getting htc to fix it (unlikely for free) will be to pay to use an xtc clip, force the device to become s-off and them flash several bootloaders in the hope that one works. Let me know what you want to do next pal.

You need to create one using an micro sdcard of 2-4 gb. (The one in the phone already should do ) you will need to place the phone into another android phone, or tablet, and download the app goldcard helper. Use it to determine the reverse CID of the sd card. Then go to this website link here and tell it the reverse CID. It will then let you Download a goldcard.img. once you have that you will need to go to this thread (link) and download this package. This will have a program called goldcard helper. Using this program you will combine the goldcard .img with the sdcard and then you will be good to go to run a ruu.

well, so the first step is to put an external sd card in another android phone, and download this app, and get the code needed to put in that link u gave me?
the job in that thread requires:
5. A htcdev unlocked bootloader follow my previous guide here.
6. cwm recovery installed.
7. superuser installed.
and all of these don't exist in my case
the thread works with adb, and i don't have
and does a 8gb card work? 'not 2 or 4)
edit:
can i pass all the steps to GoldCardTool.exe?
and what comes after?

Yes skip all of it until it talks about gold cards. All you need to do is make the gold card and then run the ruu that's in the downgrade package. It's the same hboot that you are on but it should flash without any issue. If you get error 131 then the goldcard has failed. You can certainly try with a 8gb but personally I've found that the bootloader struggles with anything over 4gb.
So to recap.
Use the app to generate the reverse cid of the sdcard.
Then insert the reverse cid number into the website I linked and download the goldcard.IMG
Then follow the goldcard instructions in the guide where it refers to goldcard tool.exe
It is recommended to use an external micro USB card reader and not a phone when writing the goldcard.
Once done place goldcard into phone,
Then connect phone to PC and then double click the ruu.exe
If it runs without error then wait for reboot of the phone, hopefully all will be well.
If the phone is not picked up then issue the fastboot command fastboot OEM rebootRUU And then try again.
Any error codes from any program just post back here, sorry for my late reply
Edit here is a good tut with a more in depth explanation of goldcard tool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035

well,
i got the reversed CID, then i got the goldcard.img from that site
now after i load it to that .exe tool, i get:
An error occured Object reference not set to an instance of an object. tool used: 0.0.5.
i found another version of that toll: 0.0.7, i got that problem:
object reference not set to an instance of an object
i used both files as admin,
and also tried compatibility mode (i'm using win8)

Hmm. ive been re-reading my info on goldcard (its been a while) and it turns out goldcardtool.exe has been know To have issues with cardreaders, so keep the card in the working android phone and mount it to the pc as usb mass storage and try again.
also run it compatability mode windows xp sp3 if possible and if it still fails post your reverse cid to this thread, ask nicely and @matter1 may be able to help you with a new goldcard.img, just incase the one from the website is faulty.
oh and use version 0/0/7 pal
sorry the problem that i didn't enable usb mass storage, it worked now and said that the sd card now is a gold one
now the next step is putting it in the htc-not working phone, and run the ruu.
edit: at last the phone booted up
i used http://revolutionary.io/ to install the recovery and root the phone
thanks for the big assistance

so you mean that your phone still in stock right..?
while you installing that RUU before..is that already finish..?
did you already tried flashing that RUU again...?, maybe you can try it to flashing it that RUU again but now is tried flashing it from your bootloader..
to do that you must go to bootloader and select FASTBOOT..then connecting it your phone to pc until indicator is FASTBOOT-USB..then try open cmd from your adb / sdk folder..then typing "fastboot oem rebootRUU"..then after that..you can try running again RUU.exe from your computer..and wait until finish..then just tell me if that success booting or not..

firstly remove your phone serial number and imei from the attachment picture...avoid someone can cloning your phone...
you can try download this RUU from here..
after that without connecting your phone to pc..firstly you must find the rom.zip file from that RUU.exe..to do that..
just running that RUU.exe until two steps next..then hold there..do not continued and do not closed that..just let it open..then open your explorer..
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Temp\[here you will find a lot folder like this "{5CAD3393-EEC0-44CE-9F93-BCAA365B77FB}"] ..search the latest folder by date..and inside that folder you will find subfolder like that again..open it..here you will see the rom.zip file..just copied the rom.zip file to another location...then after that you can cancel and close it RUU.exe
rename it the rom.zip file to "PD98IMG.zip" then copied to the root directory of your sd card (do not place it in any folder)..you can using card reader to copied that file..
after that...just put it in back your sd card to your phone..then boot up your phone to bootloader..then let the bootloader check it the PD98IMG.zip file..and wait until they ask to updating it..just confirm it with volume up..then wait until finish and ask you to confirm reboot with pressing power button..after that if your phone is already success a booting normal again..you must remove it the PD98IMG.zip file from your sd card..
just let me know if this work or not...

that's so weird things...
what if you try too installing that RUU.exe like normal way...i mean just connecting your phone with pc (select FASTBOOT mode from your bootloder) then running that RUU.exe until finish..
if that still fail too...then another way is you can try it to unlocking your bootloader via htcdev.com first..then after that you can continued installing custom recovery like 4ext, twrp or cwm..and then installing custom rom..
to unlock your bootloader via htcdev.com...firstly you must update your hboot version to 2.00.0029...that hboot update file is already in there site..just follow instruction from site it self..

M8 stuck in bootloader?

Hi,
my son's m8 just stopped working, came up with a screen saying something like "illegal use of software....."
It only boots to bootloader. Won't go into recovery, Factory recovery, I've tried a few things but things but fastboot commands won't recognize the phone. The phone does show "fast boot USB" but my PC doesn't seem to recognize the connection.
Phone is original software, locked, S-on, no mods. It does say on the screen "software modified"
Any way around this? I'll upload some screen pics.
Thanks for any advice

Run your device specific RUU via sd card method .
Hit THANKS if somebody help you
hi,
I have "Run your device specific RUU via sd card method . "
I have tried multiple RUU files for my device from a couple of different sources. none worked
see attached pics. fastboot, adb and htc_fastboot won't communicate with my phone either.
any other sources that anyone could recommend that may get this M8 booting again?

It's not easy to fix this kind of problem when the correct RUU version is not available and the bootloader is LOCKED
I suggest :
a) Not sure whether this will work as 6.24.841.1 firmware is partial update from 6.12.841.4 but worth a try.
Get the fw_6.24.841.1.zip from my thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60218734&postcount=5
Since you said your PC is not communicating with your device (which I believe due to lack of HTC USB drivers - you can check in PC Device Manager to make sure), you can install it with microsd method
Rename the fw_6.24.841.1.zip to 0P6BIMG.zip (make sure your PC doesn't have windows extension hidden, it not it may read as 0P6BIMG.zip.zip and won't install)
Put in microsd and go to hboot to update, reboot and see whether it can boot now.
b) if the above fails, you need to try to unlock bootloader thru http://www.htcdev.com/
if it can be unlocked, install TWRP then restore the 6.24.841.1 backup that you can get from my thread linked in my signature.

Hi I am back.... doh.
After numerous attempts the above did finally work BUT the phone could not connect to internet or google playstore.
So, I tried the above FW method again, now it just keeps rebooting => HTC screen, optimizing apps then reboots
any other suggestions / links for me to try.
question..... what are the ****diag.zip & ****diag.nbh that HBOOT also looks for when booting to SDcard? Would one of these files be worth a try?
Thanks

I believe you do have hardware issue. Maybe corrupted data/emmc.
When it was working but no internet .. why didn't you try to unlock bootloader ? It's already out of warranty .. with bootloader unlock, you can try other thing like formatting data partition and restore a non-rooted stock nandroid.
Until now .. I never see a RUU been released for device version.

Hi, I did try to unlock bootloader, when I got the m8 working. yes it is out of warranty
I re-downloaded all files to my PC as HTC Dev asked but the fastbboot service could not recognize the phone. HTC sync was connecting and the phone was showing in my PC but the USB fastboot still would not let me :crying:
so..... without unlocking the bootloader, how do I "try formatting data partition and restore a non-rooted stock nandroid"
thank you
