I've been trying to do this myself now for about a week or so, I've searched every possible term I can think off both on this forum and Google, but for the life of me I can NOT figure out how to save the bubbles properly, please tell me I'm doing something wrong...
Alright here were my steps:
Root Phone (duh)
Decompile SecMMS.apk (I'm assuming if you can help me you already know how to get to this point)
Now this is the part that kills me, I take my .pngs and recolor them maticulously in both all 3 bubbles (Sent/Recv, focus and press) and the display bubbles.
I then rezip, replace and restart..
Only to end up with this...

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can save this or what program I should use to edit this so the bubbles don't go crazy on me? I have tried a program called GIMP as well as a program online both did the same thing, I am wondering if it's HOW I saved it... I always saved as PNG retaining transparency and I'm just out of ideas.

These need to be either extracted or compiled. You can edit the png add the black markers for stretching and re-sizable area, then save and recompile with 9.png compiler and pop back in or decompile the entire apk and add it in, recompile once it is done.
I recommend View attachment xUltimate-9Patch.zip. If you need further help feel free to pm me.

Title's pretty on it. I had gotten a black google search from somewhere, but I don't remember where, and now that I'm 2.2, I figured I'd jsut edit it myself.
Can someone tell me the apk that I need to look in to edit the background PNG? Any help would be appreciated.
Have you tried:
GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
or
QuickLookup.apk

Tried Googlequicksearch. Will try the other in a second. Right now I'm tricking out the radio lol.
Nope, not quick search either
Just use the search softly and use the screen space for something else. Hint - tap to open search window. Long press to use voice search. No need to be redundant.

Bugless Beast 0.4 had the translucent black search box, and I thought the mod was part of his launcher2.apk. The previous post seems to prove me wrong.
It also had a translucent version of the power switch, which i think is in settings.apk, but it might be part of the framework.
I'd love to see something like that, it was really slick.
Let me know if you throw something together.
Edit: attached the BB 0.4 Launcher2.apk.
Edit2: Riptide, thats badass.

Got it, but I currently have the latest Google search installed, so theoretically this should overwrite the exiting file right?
The problem is I don't see the existing Google search in the /system/app folder. I pushed the above Google search, but no change. I can't tell if it even overwrote the previous. I also dont know which existing APK file I need to remove to uninstall the existing Google search).
Not sure if all that made sense.
is it possible to install this without root?
Hi guys,
Just as I was saying in the threat with the Modded DialerTabActivity, I modded a bit the phone. I hope you like it.

is it transparent? or does it always have the clouds background? looks pretty sweet to me....
unfortunately it has clouds background. I will make a few more variants.
I don;t know at the moment how could I make it transparent
this app are wonderfull...
To make it transparent you will have to use photoshop or gimp
trust me mate, I tried. But it's not that. If I make it transparent, it will show a black background.... I don;t know how to make it
you can do a version without that dialer image?
Works nice but force closes phone.apk when ending a call. I googled this problem but solution didn't work.still,it works and looks good
Hmmmm... Very nice butt of this Tati... LoL
) this is the default image for contacts without an image allocated.
@RobZarzecki if you have problems, PM me with your phone's original Phone.apk and I will mod it for you

I was trying to modify my stock dialer on my droid x a while back and gave up. I remember seeing a thread about it for the motorola phones though, the color had nothing to do with photoshop. Instead, it was color codes that needed edited in a hex file. I am brand new to samsung, so I'm not sure if that helps you at all. But you got further than I did on the X. Good luck
I am trying to install but no luck, am getting a "not installed" after trying.
Is anyone else experiencing this ?
Cheers, LL-
You use root explorer in market, have copy and paste in system/app

I installed liquid rom v1.1 and that part was different, the icons were, I don't know, less transparent. The icons on the left were all solid colors. Never seen that before. Now, it has changed back on its own, for no reason I can think of and I want to change it back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I can decomplie, edit, and compile apk and framework just fine. Hopefully it's easy tho.
Oh yeah its a breeze. All you have to do is decomopile the systemUI.apk and find those .png's that you want to edit. Finish the changes with Photoshop or whatever you're using and recompile, and push it back into the system. I noticed that one of the icons was from titanium backup. You will have to actually go inti that .apk and edit those as well if you want to make them all uniform-which would probably take a million years haha
Edit:
Actually some of those might be in the framework apk just decompile both haha

I doubt this is the case. Why would ALL the developers use the same ugly greyish color. I'm sure its just a transparency thing.

I've been using Apk_Multi-Tool_Alpha_02 with the github experimental builds addon. Not sure which version of apktool is in the "other" folder though. It has handled everything I throw at (except contacts & phone) without having to play one jar to decompile and another to recompile game.
good day.
I'm running Chicago Remix rom, ICS 4.0.4 and i'm looking for a dark MMS.
I've decompiled the MMS.APK through APKTool but i'm no expert user. I don't know how to change the background color or txt color and such.
If anyone can help me I will take the time to attempt to do it myself... I don't mind some trial and error it can always be fun.
Thank you anyone.
I'm not sure if these will work i dont see why they wouldn't but i'm no dev i just saw these the other day and figured i would share
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23960-bubble-themed-mmsapks-various-styles-updated-5-2/
these won't work, have already tried a few so I just wanted to try and theme one myself... Anyone? I'd like to basically change the background color to black, txt to white, possibly make the bubbles look different if thats not too challenging, and making silly smiles.
this is what i'm trying to do basically:

If you manage to whip all that together would you mind and sharing with me and or the community! It looks absolutely amazing.
That is my plan to share it of course. I just need to figure out how in gods name to do it. I tried decompiling that apk but it's signed and I can't get to it. I was simply going to try and a little copy and paste on certain things.

Here is a great guide I found at rootzwiki that gives a step by step tutorial on how to edit the Mms apk: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/19845-how-to-theme-your-mms-a-step-by-step-guide/. I found that after I had some help and figured it out. My best advice is to decompile my theme and take a look at it. Most of what you're looking for will be in the layout folder.
If you'd like further help and information you can contact me on GTalk. my email address is nbe[email protected]
Thank you NBeebe24 for all your help and continued support. Here is the first release of my MMS for ChicagoRom and should also work on any UCLE2 rom as well... not tested on them though so i'm not sure..

It's actually VERY easy once you do it once.
First, you need to know what file to edit.
The battery .png images are kept in system/app/SystemUI.apk
now, you could just change the battery images, but there are only about 10 of them.
If you want the MOD where the battery actually tells you what number the battery is at, that requires knowledge of decompiling the application.
The best way for someone to do this would be for the ROM developer, or themer, or anyone who knows how, set up the SystemUI.apk with the 1-100% battery MOD already in the SystemUI.apk, then you just edit the .png images (all 200 of them, 1-100 for phone, 1-100 for charging)
VR theme would be the best system for changing batteries.
If you want I can edit your SystemUI.apk to allow the 200 batteries, or if you just want to change the one thats there, they are in res/drawable-xxhdpi folder, you can only edit the images that are there, so basically you could say, change the stock green battery to, res orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, you get it.
Google is your best friend for learning these things.
was for me anyway, and still is, I Google all the time, usually if you have a question, someone before you had the same one and you can find your answer that way.
these are some good threads, tells you where to find images for other apps as well.
