[Q] HTC Desire - need to know if USB completely broken? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm stuck in a quandary with my HTC desire
I believe i have the USB BRICK issue, i cannot get the phone recognised in any PC, have used official HTC cable and other and another PC, all work with my other android phone but not this one. I cannot get into ADB or FASTBOOT via cable not even if i boot into the bootloader. I get nothing
I can't use fastboot commands or ADB via windows CMD prompt but i can adb via wireless, sadly that does not help with tools like 'revolutionary' or 'fastboot' commands.
I successfully managed to create a goldcard and flash a stock WWE RUU, which went well, and the phone went back to stock but i only get 'USB DEBUGGING' symbol pop up on the phone side when i plug the cable in, nothing in device manager, no option to install any drivers, i checked it wasn't set to charge only in 'settings' and usb dubugging is checked.
Phone will charge on the official HTC cable.
I still a noob so if i have missed something or have quoted any of the above incorrect then i hope you understand.
I think I'm missing something so simple.
Could i kindly ask if anyone could talk me through any terminal emulator methods i could use from within the phone to help solve this problem.
I do not get any change in device manager when the phone is plugged in and have tried front and back ports, there is no yellow triangle etc in device manager indicating a driver issue and i also did a fresh install of windows 7 and new htc install. (Win XP gave the same results)
I even checked the usb port on the pcb and it is in good condition, nothing jammed in there, no broken / damaged pins and the solder points are all good.
Many thanks
Chris

I have tried doing the PM31IMG.zip of both the Gingerbread and Froyo images, I have tried to reload hboot-92 using the same format, all tries have ended up with a message that says "no image or wrong image".
I am now trying to do a RUU, but windows does not recognize the phone. When you plug the phone in, it recognizes it as Android 1.0 but it cannot find a valid driver. I installed HTC sync from HTC's website and I tell it to use windows update, but neither of those finds a valid driver. I have tried the above method on Windows XP SP2, Windows 7 32bit, and Windows 7 64bit with the same outcome.
Any suggestions on either a valid driver or anything else to try to get a working phone?
Thanks.
*edit* I also have tried doing a factory reset from hboot, that does not help either.....

I just went thru this process this morning using ruu from:
http://pvillecomp.com/wp/wp-content...15.10.07.07_NV_1.70_release_210643_signed.exe
you may try power phone on while connected or before connected to computer. I had same recognition problem and one of these options solved issue.

Thanks.
But a new issue arrived today. Shortly after I posted, I decided to try different micro sd cards and I found one that when I put the img file on it, it actually recognized the image. Which I thought made me in the clear, I used the gingerbread image from the pvillecomp.com site. When it loaded the image and installed it the radio failed but everything else passed, then it rebooted when it was done, except it didn't really reboot it shut down and now does nothing. Can't power up, can't go into hboot, and it doesn't even show it is charging or it recognizes the usb when plugged in.

Device not found in ADB

Hope someone can help me
With my HOX I am not able to work with adb. Whatever I try it always says device not found.
I installed en re-intalled and re-installed again and again android sdk, checked and double-checked everything, like java, usb drivers etc with sdk-manager.
Installed it in c:\android-sdk
In cmd I can use fastboot commands but no adb
'fastboot devices' shows me my One X
'ADB devices' shows me nothing
Other ADB commands says: device not found
I cannot get it to work, used different usb-ports, used different usb cables, and yes I am on fastboot USB
I'm in windos 7 x64
Someone can point me in the right direction??
Thanks in advance
Did you check on USB Debugging in Developer options?
If the phone is in fastboot ONLY fastboot commands will work. ADB commands work when the unit is turned on and booted into Android and you have USB Debugging enabled...

The easiest way of getting ADB to work:
Turn your phone OFF (Yes, off)
Connect it to your pc and wait for windows to finish "installing the drivers"
Try ADBing by going to ure fastboot folder (assuming it has the ADB executable inside the folder as well).
You could check if your device was recognized by firing
Code:
adb devices
If it doesn't show anything then do the following:
Grab the appropriate pc drivers from here: http://www.android-advice.com/2012/how-to-root-the-htc-one-x-and-htc-one-s/
Extract the drivers
Now go to Start menu and right click on my computer and then click manage.
Now go to device manager and there you should see your connected One X listed as being without a driver.
Right click on that entry and select 'update driver'
Now tell it that you have the driver on local disk and then browse to the folder you extracted.
Update your driver.
Disconnect and reconnect the device and try ADBing again.
Should work.
Thanks rajitsingh , Ill try this.

Tmobile HTC One M7 bricked?
So I did something pretty dumb yesterday. Installed the HTC Sense 6 update on my HTC ONE M7, hated it so decided to root my phone to revert back to Sense 5.0 or 5.5 or potentially try a custom ROM. Downloaded a Tmobile 4.3 JB RUU, downloaded android SDK, HTC sync manager, Fastboot. I unlocked boot loader, installed Wheaton recovery by Koush, installed SU, figured phone was rooted but it wasn't. Now I've somehow succeeded in deleting EVERYTHING. Phone continues booting into recovery. Commands using Fastboot aren't recognized because it cannot find any device. When plugged in via USB, PC recognizes that something is plugged in but that's about it.

[Q] wildfire cannot downgrade to create s-off

Hello hoping someone can help, I'm a noob have not had much success in rooting yet...
Have a wildfire (Australian Telstra 3G)
Trying to downgrade firmware from HBOOT 1.01.0002 to 1.010001 so i can get s-off.
I'm following the instructions posted in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
I've downloaded htc drivers (and uninstalled htc sync)as per instructions
Also loaded android drivers via device manager (screen dump attatched)
I can "talk" to my SD card OK with windows explorer but i don't think I am "talking to my phone or card via adb and the command prompt"
Got the full SDK package installed.
All the obvious things.. Andrtoid debugging enabled / Charge only
So When I attempt to run Step 1 bat I get the following error message:adb server is out of date..killing..*daemon server started successfully... error device not found..(screen dump attatched)
also i tried to make a "goldcard" and extract the serial no of the sd card on the phone. . same deal.. as soon as i get into adb ....error. device not found
note i am using windows 7.
my theory is that i'm don't have a propper usb link when i go into the dos cammand prompt/adb but i have loaded the drivers. I think this is happening when i try to root other phones also (eg zte blade)
can anyone help me. be kind to me I'm a noob...I've attatched three relevant screen dumps

Thanks eventcom, but I've followed that link and numrerous others and they all follow the same theme.
here is the problem as I see it...
1/I have installed the android driver when in hboot and it works ok as per attatched image
2/ I have installed htc_sync_setup 3.2.20.exe which is the latest driver availiable from the htc website.I then uninstall HTC sync, which leaves HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver remaining as installed ( as per instructions)
3/ I have uninstalled any other USB programs which might conflict including Itunes and ascociated garbage (no i didn't put it there my kids did!).
USB debugging is turned on & when i plug in USB i go charge only (as per instructions)
Here's a hint...
When I execute an adb commandwithin command prompt eg [adb devices] i get no devices. When I issue a adb copy command I get the result "device not found" I'm know i'm going nowhere on this until I can get device to properly talk via adb and this is the assistance that i am seeking
further info.
I've tried this procedure on another (winxp) machine with same results.
Ive tried this procedure on another wildfire "s" (that is already rooted) same results
I've temporarily disabled the AVG 2012 virus protection & firewall.
As well as being in the directory that the file adb.exe exists I have also installed SDK so adb appears to run in any directory (please explain ?)
If i plug in usb and go "mount sd card" I can access the sd card on the phone viawindows explorer . in my mind this tells me that I have correct usb driver working.
I've tried a different usb cable AND a different phone
before I uninstalled htc sync i tried it out. it doesn't work and the phone won't sync up to this program ( it rarely works this program, tried it on numerous pc with different htc devices and more often than not it doesn't work)
I'm hoping that someone who is experienced in adb can help me get the phone talking with my pc, keeping in mind that I've done almost everything that I can think of to get my phone to "talk: via usb cable and issue commands. If I can't get my phone to communicate via adb then there is no way I can get past step one
please help me

i shall do my very best
ok so what system are you currently running? (win7,vista,xp ect)
are you using the stock usb cable that came with the phone?
when you connect the device to the pc with usb debugging turned on do you get the usb debugging notification in your status bar on the phone?
when you plug your device into the pc with debugging enabled what does your device manager recognize it as? mine shows up as attached...
did your antivirus flag up when you were installing the skd or downloading the adb.exe?
Success with debranding but problems with Revolutionary recovery
Thank you heavy_metal_man.
I finally solved the USB driver issue. I ended up completely uninstalling HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver. I then installed HTCDriver3.00.007.exe as a stand alone only. Finally I got it to recognise in device manager.
Important lesson learned. Installing the latest HTC driver off the website which is htc_sync_setup_3.2.20 (which installs 3 modules HTC Sync, HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver) then uninstalling HTC sync did not work for me...I now just have HTC driver installer only.
I asked to install clockwork mod during the revolutionary process, but I suspect it didn't work
Anyway I have now succesfully debranded and "sort of" have root. my Hboot screen now looks like this...

Problem is when I go into recovery I get the "revolutionary CWM V4.0.1.4" Menu... So far so good.however When I select any item EG bacup & restore, intead of going to the next level menu it just goes to a revolutionary screen with no menu and just hangs. pressing the power button takes me back a level but the vol+ vol- buttons do nothing as there is no menu to select from.
So i can't flash with this current screen. the only way I can get out of it is to remove the battery as the reboot & power off menu items do not work.
.
I have tried re-running the revolutionary Exe file again. It prompts me if i would liketo install CWM and I say yes . It says it's done and takes me into Fastboot USB where I can reboot. but CWM ( The wierd revolutionary model) DOES not work like the CWM that i am accustomed to...
So i STILL can't flash CM7...but I'm getting closer...

That's ok , power is meant to do that, its the back button you need to use the trackball to select stuff also if I remember correctly that recovery has an issue where it will not charge the phone when it is turned off, so I would update that asap I shall give you a link when I'm out of bed, but for the mean time, backup, wipe everything and install cm7+ gapps
ok here is the most up tp date cwm recovery for the buzz as far as i know. and here is the thread it came from something to note, when you jump up tp gingerbread the type of recovery changes as well, so, the new one will not flash sense roms unless the rom has been designed for the new edify type recovery. not sure how many support this though. also the new recovery will NOT flash radios. it does not play well with others but you can always downgrade your recovery temporarily if you need to, or use the rom manager app (which ic an app interface for the recovery) to flash what you need

Thanks Heavy_metal_man
Success I now have CM 7.2.0- buzz. I also installed google apps ok.
I guess I shouldv'e read the instructions on flashing a bit closer. I've also got a wildfire "s" as well and it uses the power button to enter so I suppose I just assumed...Truth is that I've only just got this phone last week and I didn't even realise that it had a trackball button ...
This is my first ever root/flash that I have done and I have learned alot from the experience. I specifically got this phone ($10 on ebay) so I coul;d learn to do this without the risk of damaging my own phone. This phone had "issues" when I bought it which is why i got it so cheap. now I have upgraded to CM7 it the issues (eg wireless hotspot would not remain on) have gone.
Soon I hope to have the experience and courage to flash my own phone and my kids phones.
Thanks to H_M_M and all of the XDA forum for helping me out.

[Q] Complicated USB brick

Hi everyone.
A week ago, I tried to install this new rom.
Now, my HTC desire cannot read my sdcard, even from recovery. I also cannot use adb to debug it (revovery or not).
I therefore assumed that I was in an USB brick, even if my phone charged when booted, and that I can get signal.
I followed this guide.
BUT, my terminal emulator isn' t working at all. I get a blank screen and then a 'not responding app'. No matter which terminal app I am using.
My device is S-ON, which doesn't allow me to make a restore through fastboot, and I cannot get it S-OFF because of the phone not being recognized by my computer.
I am searching the web since one week, trying to resolve this problem.
I can use Windows or Linux as you prefer.

Unable to Root - USB?

Hi All,
I need help to root and S-OFF my phone. The issue is that my USB charging post does not work (PC and other laptops do not detect it). I have read the Welcome to the HTC Desire (Bravo) Troubleshooting Guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632) and followed Section 11, at step number 7, I am unable to boot into recovery - all i get is a black screen with a red triangle /!\?
My phone is not recognized by the PC when selecting "Disc Drive", "HTC Sync". Have tried fastboot and I also tried Unrevoked, does not detect phone, have made sure usb debugging is on, any ideas - help and guidance will be appreciated.

so your micro usb port on your phone is damaged and cannot transfer data?
that method won't work
"#NOTES: MUST BE BOOTED INTO ROM, ONLY TESTED ON FROYO AND S-OFF"
you can't do step 7, because step 6 will fail. it can't flash a recovery because you are not s-off yet.
have you installed all the relevant drivers for the phone to be detected? install htc sync, then uninstall it but leave the htc drivers.
at a minimum you will need your phone to be recognised by PC. then use revolutionary to s-off. follow the guides.
Hi
Thanks for the reply's. It may be that the USB port is damaged.
I have installed HTC Sync and uninstalled it,not removing the drivers.
Is there a way to root without USB, say using the micro SD card?

not sure to be honest. so when you connect, computer can't see it or connect at all, you can't browse your sd card? it still charges though, so usb port is not completely broken.
have you tried another micro usb cable / laptop with drivers installed / sd card just to be sure?
you will almost certainly need it to be detected by pc to s-off/root etc. the software needs to communicate with the phone. have another look at the guides to see if they have another workaround.
Hi
Used another cable to check computer connection, still no joy, phone not recognized and does not charge phone anymore
I have read the guides, they all want PC access, do just asking if anyone knew of a different solution?

well if your phone doesn't charge anymore you need to look at the bigger picture. you need a working usb port regardless, at a minimum to charge the device! even if you s-off / root etc if it's not going to last one charge!
send for repair if it's under warranty, or find out how much it would cost for someone to repair it. there are probably guides out there to change it yourself if you're adventurous.
once it's repaired and working, you can s-off root etc properly
