Is anyone able to get a ps3 controller to work when it is directly wired to the phone? I just bought a gameklip and can't seem to get the controller to work. I just get a notification in the status bar about usb host mode.
Need the six axis app. Try that first.

I also need root once there's an exploit. I don't think my parents would allow me to send to a dev for the java card thing.

I feel you. I don't have the funds to do anything like that right now. I gotta pay for gas and such lol. Kinda waiting to see if the exploit will come with 4.3, especially if it's anytime soon.

I have rooted a ton of devices from tablets to phones and I don't specifically recall ever needing to flash an entirely different kernel to do so.
My question is, is a new kernel an understood for root access? I was under the impression root was, well...access, to system files and the like.
I'm actually pretty sure devices have been rooted PRE kernel source being released, and that source is more conducive to custom ROMs than anything else.
If someone who knows could clarify, I would be grateful and I also think it may begin to explain why some folks are *LOSING* functionality with root.

The kernel is the heart of the OS. when the kernel is rooted, so is everything else
People are losing functions because the source code from Samsung is jacked up, and the devs are trying to pull it together

Another way to achieve root without replacing the kernel is with an exploit that takes advantage of a bug i.e. in the bluetooth stack to temporarily gain elevated (SU) privileges and use it to install permanent root, flash a new recovery, etc. That's probably the kind of root method that you are more familiar with.

Ahh, that makes sense. See, a few devices I've rooted have been pretty straight forward. But the the OG rooting process on the Nook Color was odd as hell, and then the choice of booting SD or eMMC was another consideration to take. The process of rooting Tablets seems to be somewhat similar to this one floating around for the ET right now.
Do any of the ICS leaks/releases thus far support USBOTG or USB host mode?
Our phone is supposed to be capable of it, but according to the threads I have read so far it is not working (at least prior to ICS).
The combination of working USB host and running Ubuntu / BackTrack5 would be awesome!
bumpidy bumpidy
It worked for a while in international sgs2 but they disabled it for some reason.... E4gt has never had it as it's not in the kernel... Maybe cm9 will have it but they haven't said yet ...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
i used to do it all of the time on the gingerbread roms but from what i can tell on mine running the FB17 leak, it will work if you pay for through sprint so we may just have to wait for the update to come out an some devs to make a rom.
What exactly do you mean that we may have to pay for it through Sprint?

since this is just the leaked stock its the same concept as the stock o/s when you got the phone, sprint wont let you use it without paying for the hotspot plan but when the devs get to work on the official release they change it so the you dont have to pay for USB hotspot.
I believe our ninja friend here had miss understood the question.
Mr Ninja, usbotg/USB host is a utility that allows the ability to use an adapter cable to connect things like a flash drive, USB keyboard/mouse, external hard drives, ect.. This was a feature that Samsung advertised that many of us (including myself) were extremely excited for, only to find out that Samsung/sprint had removed the ability from the Kernal. he waswondering if they had added it back with Ics.

was talking to jamcar who was trying to incorporate USB hosting with his DARKSTAR rom. he said that the files are included in ics kernels but there must be some specific drivers for our phone that need to be coded to get it working. he may or may not be working on it but i offered to test for him if he gets something going

I remember seeing the references to the USB OTG files back in the GB releases, but as most people found out, references doesn't mean the whole setup is working.
So are we basically at the mercy of Samsung to release the needed drivers then? If anyone is currently developing them, I would be more than happy to test... Although I need to aquire/solder the cable first
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Just saw that Darkstar v1.0.1 has Usb host listed in the features! Anyone get a chance to give it a go yet?
EDIT: As far as I can tell, references exist but it still isn't working...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
yup. i jumped on it as soon as i saw it in the list. its present in the ics kernels, but as for the necessary drivers/etc they are yet to be coded. its nice to see the demand for USB OTG growing. if it was this strong when zedomax was devving for us we might have gotten something (he started on a kernel for Tmo GS2 that supported it)
Tried Calk's E4GT 2 v1.0 Beta 3 last night, and it doesn't support USBOTG yet....

Hopefully someone comes out with a ROM that supports OTG. I really miss using my keyboard an mouse, lol.... Also would the HDMI to Mini fail to work as well because of the lack of OTG support?
I heard there is a new build today (fc13). Hopefully that will have otg. If not, maybe in cm9 soon or we beg zedomax to return.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
agree
I wish this subject would get more attention then maybe we could use our expensive devices' full potential.
Yes, it would be nice to have OTG support. I really would like to use my phone for open accessory development. Guess I will have to use my Xoom for now.
Will that interfere with any updates from at&t? Dare I say I might not root for now and leave as is.
i'm not rooting til there is a reason too... so far, there isn't

Same here, I just wanted to freeze out the att ****ware.
I'm going to hold off until tar hits.
hopefully that comes soon like it did on Sprints
I also would want to freeze the bloatware but does rooting the device interfere with updates from at&t for the multiview update? I usually immediately root/unlock bootloader and custom rom my new device. Never actually wanted to run stock like I do now due to the sgn2 features, including the s-pen.
I would assume that as long as you're using the stock rom then ota should still be available; but once you run ota you will probably have to re-root and also hope they don't patch whatever root methods we have currently.
I think I'm going to root soon so that I can play my NOVA3 with my PS3 controller... HDMI on the big screen using my Note 2 as a gaming system... You got to love it.

I was just about to ask the same thing.
Hey guys..
Straight forward question..
Is it possible to password protect our Download and Recovery modes?
And i mean when you press and hold vol dwn+home+power method. Not through the android software reboot menu.
I want/like this idea because if someone were to steal my phone. They would NEVER be able to flash a custom ROM or even flash a stock ROM img. They would be completely locked out making the device useless to them.
The only way i think they could get past it is by using JTAG to overwrite the download partition with a stock one. But hardly anyone has a JTAG device.
Well this would be awesome. lol
Have at it
Im guessing it would require a modified bootloader. Not really sure though. Ive wondered about this myself. Never seen it done though.

I think it would be the ultimate level of security. And i agree a modified bootloader would be necessary. How one would go abouts creating one i am clueless.

As am I lol! This ones a bit above my skill level!
Problem is, itd have to be redone for each model. Unless there was a way to have sonething that could sit on top of or intercept power on and run before the bootloader....I really have no idea though, just tossing ideas!

that is a great idea indeed.:good:
Very interesting topic, but I think it is impossible to do (Recovery & download) are design to prevent forgotten password issues.
What a pity
Guys i thnk if it can be done
It will be easy to install it on our devices if rooted (stock android)
As companies like sammy ,htc have diff kernals
I thnk we can successfully do this fr nexus ,micromax ,karbonn etc.....
Lets have a try
Ny one tried this before
If so plz gimme a guide of it so that it will b easy fr me
Lemmi try my best fr us to have ultimate theft protection on our android devices
I hope if it wrks google may add it on its future devices
The "ultimative" protection would be:
When a phone is stolen, you can remotely trigger "the suicide button" xD
When it is triggered and the phone receives the command (Even if the phone is running other ROM) it reboots the phone and erases the Bootloader and some other things that are important for the phone to work.
Best. Protection. Ever.
Second thing I could imagine is that phone companies could protect the download mode with a password (12 digits or so).
That password will come printed on one of the manuals when you buy the phone.
If you attempt to flash an image in download mode, you will be prompted for the password.
And, optionally, if you put the password 10 times wrong, it will erase bootloader and etc.
Third idea: The download mode only will prompt for a password (printed on the manual), if you atempt to flash another ROM on it... Because this will change the confidential signature that the old ROM has passed to the download mode.
(I am not sure if this could be done. I'm just saying ideas...)
I'm just having a look through some of the kernel source for 8.4 (T700) and noticed in the config :
Code:
# CONFIG_SEC_RESTRICT_ROOTING is not set
I just wonder if this has been set by Samsung to :
Code:
CONFIG_SEC_RESTRICT_ROOTING=y
in official compile kernel an thus prevent rooting?
I have managed to compile a zImage, but I can't test due to not yet having any sort of SGT-S device yet, still waiting in Thailand...........
Maybe some dev out there wishes to test for themselves?
I'm guessing within the next two weeks some boffin somewhere will figure out root on this.
