Can't seem to flash any room - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm fairly new to flashing on this phone. Had it rooted and running PA 4.2 for a while then wanted to try something else. I can get into recovery and restore back to what appears to be stock with recovery access. From there I've tried flashing CM 10.2, PA 4.2 & 4.3 and slimbean, I get to their animated splash logo boot screen and it just hangs there. Any tips?
Current Stats:
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: T989UVMC6
Kernel: 2.6.35.11
Build: Gingerbread.UVKL1
ClockworkMod Recovery: v5.0.2.7
Thanks much!

Lost Root
I found that I somehow lost my root. I have several root zip files on my device, so I went in to recovery and attempted to flash one of them to gain root. two of the three failed (flash aborted). The third was successful, and I now have superuser in the app drawer. When I open Titanium backup it displays the text "asking for root rights" but it just hangs there.
Here's what I'm wanting to do... perform a complete wipe of the phone and start over, do I odin back to stock and re-root? I want to be able to flash SlimBean 4.3 with minimal slim gapps. So my question is what method do I use to get there, which recovery do I use?
Thanks ahead for any help you can offer.

Use Odin to flash to stock 4.1.2 UVMC6.
To flash a 4.3 ROM you will need the newest CWM or TWRP 2.6.1.0 and newer.
Odin flashable TWRP can be found here
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules
2.6.1.0 is the version I recommend.

Thanks meekrawb!
Okay that makes sense. I wasn't getting anywhere so I rest the phone back to bone stock using the instructions in this thread.
So now I'm totally stock & un-rooted; Android: 2.3.6 Baseband: T989UVKL1 Kernel: 2.6.35.11 Build: Gingerbread.UVKL1
What's the proper way to get to
stock 4.1.2 UVMC6

I'm no longer rooted at the moment. I've looked around and found this thread but I would need to be rooted first.
Once I get there I should be able to get TWRP 2.6.1.0 using the link provided in the previous post (thank you).

Odin flash this file that mikeyman made to make sure you have the newest firmware:
https://db.tt/sgyIphAD
Then Odin the TWRP tar.
After that, you can flash your ROM and gapps. No need to root first.

I forgot you probably need to delete the mikeyman77_ from the front of the file. If that still doesn't work you can download the whole firmware from here

Excellent that worked perfect! I'm working on getting the ROM flashed.
thanks so much for all your help

Success!
Thank you so much for your help. I am now enjoying my first 4.3 rom (SlimBean)!

your firmware is really really old. try upgrading to latest jellybean. and if you cant flash through your phone try flashing through odin:good:

I've been enjoying my device running slim bean 4.3. However I don't have root access which is required for using titanium back up or the like. Can I get root access now without wiping all my data, would I have to re-flash the ROM? And what's the best way to go about it?

There is a way to switch it on in settings somewhere but I'm not sure where because I use SuperSU. Just flash this in recovery

Going back to rooted stock jellybean ROM from CM10.1

I wish to return to a rooted stock JB ROM from CM10.1 . CM10.1 is too buggy for me, and CM10 had one bluetooth bug in the final release that was kind of a game killer for me. I'd like to go back to stock JB but keep my custom recovery. The only files I've found for stock jellybean are full stock in that they'll flash over my recovery as well as my system. Does anyone know where I can find a root stock image that will let me flash just the system and keep my recovery like any other rom, so that I can flash back to CM10.1 when it is more stable. PS I am also on Linux and do not regularly have access to a windows machine so I do not have access to Odin, or Kies.
after you flash to stock just flash a recovery, that's what i've done.
also, this is the wrong section and you should search first.

I searched and found only "One click" stock roms, and the "Fully Stock" roms. Neither of which solve my problem. Did you even read the portion of my post where I say I don't have access to Odin, or Kies or any of that? My only option for flashing is CWM. And I'm not sure how well overwritting CWM while CWM is flashing would work, but I don't think it would go well.

find a cwm flashable zip of a stock rom. it doesn't need to be a current version. flash that. then find the cwm flashable ota zips and flash those. you've retained root, and cwm. i have done this process as well.
i'd link you to the threads you need but i'm on my phone and it's difficult to find this way.
edit: one of the otas is here. i haven't found anything about updating to jelly bean, though. i know there's a tutorial somewhere about making cwm flashable zips, i might try making one for you after i get my sister to sleep.

find the appropriate version for your carrier and flash via your recovery. its pre-rooted and cwm/twrp flashable, no odin or PC needed.

[Q] update of stock rom led to recovery failure

Hi,
I just got my Galaxy S III and decided to root it. I had done it before. I made a mistake and it wouldn't reboot, so, I had to put the stock rom on the device again. I found the stock rom, which was a 4.0.4 version and flashed it with no problem. But, then, the automatic update installed the 4.1.1 version. Here is when the problem starts: after installation, when I try to go into the recovery mode to clear the cache, the android is dead with a read triangle above it. I don't know what to do since I want to flash a custom rom.
Oh, a small detail that might be important. The stock rom is flashed using ODIN, but the reboot process is so lengthy, I have to remove the battery and then clear the cache before it fully reboots. At this stage (still 4.0.4) there is no problem with recovery mode and everything is fine. It is only after the update to 4.1.1 that the problem starts.
Your helps are much appreciated.

So you can esily flash 4.0.4 with no hiccup but then you get the update (kies I assume) and it fails ?
Do you want to be rooted ?
if not just flash the stock 4.1.1 from Sammobile in Odin and update that way to avoid that Kies garbage

So you can't flash anything 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 ? That's odd that only 4.0.4 works. Does it fail with Kies too ?
What about just rooting using CF-auto root or casual and then flashing a rom ?

So, I finally figured it out. I used the samsung galaxy s3 toolkit to install the stock firmware and then I updated it on the phone. Next, I went back to the toolkit and installed the most recent version of CWM on it and everything just worked beautifully. I have LiquidSmooth installed and it works just great.

[Q] Beginner - Help!! Error Status 7

Android Verson: 4.3

If you already have a custom recovery CWM then just find the most up to date version of it. You obviously installed once already. Also are you referring to stock 4.3?

Also getting Status 7 error
I had TWRP installed (whatever ver comes with toolbox app)
Read reply, and installed latest version of CWM Touch from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2152769
Still getting Status 7 on two different ROMs.
Now, I had been on 4.1.1, rooted and flashed a custom ROM no problem
Had some problems with my TMO service (I have another thread in this forum) and ended up doing an ODIN flash back to stock (4.0.4)
Which I have now sitting at stock, rooted. Is it possible that I'm getting the status 7 because both of the ROM's I'm attempting to flash are 4.4.2 and that is too big of a leap from 4.0.4? I'm going to grab a 4.1.x rom now to see if any different, but wanted to share history and that I was getting same error
The easiest way for me to get 4.4.2 onto an s3 was this:
1) copy a custom rom to your sd card (internal or external)
2) use Odin to flash back to any stock rom for your phone;
3) use Odin to install the latest version of Philz Touch Recovery from here (get the tar version and flash in PDA): http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att;
4) update to the most recent non-4.3 bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
5) do a full wipe in recovery;
6) flash a custom 4.4.2-based ROM from recovery.

Your main problem is that you need an updated bootloader. Please read up on this as it has been covered in great and very extensive detail throughout these forums. One bootloader will cause you to no longer to be capable of using ODIN to flash back to any stock based ROM without bricking your phone so you need to be careful.

Read more and you will see that cwm recovery is highly recommended for flashing 4.4.2 roms. Some roms dont flash good with twrp.

Help with reverting back to stock

so i have a rooted at&T galaxy s3 on the latest stock firmware which i guess is 4.3. i tried flashing resurrection rom which was kit kat and it failed. so i restored my back up and the phone would get stuck on the splash screen. so i formated the whole phone and forgot to save my backup to my sdcard. twrp now says that i have no OS installed and also says i am not rooted anymore. im scared and need a little assistance. i just want to get it going.
Just flash the latest TWRP, copy a custom ROM to your phone, boot into TWRP, and flash it.

no its not based on kitkat. i flashed an older version of cwm via odin. i figured i could just update it with rom manager. i tried to update cwm to the latest verion and it fails everytime. so...i downloaded root checker from the play store and it says im not rooted. i need to fix this lol

[Q] Questions about going back to stock.

Hey guys,
I was running Cyanogenmod 11 for a while which I installed using the automatic tool online. During the summer I flashed Dirty Unicorns but I have issues with the camera and random rebooting. I just got a Galaxy Gear for Christmas and I've read that its only compatible with touchwiz roms.
I'm trying to go back to stock and I am ok with losing my root access.
I have an SGH-1747m on Baseband I747MVLUEMK5 and my service provider is Bell. The android version is 4.4.4 currently. Whats the easiest method to do this? I've read some concerning information that going back to an earlier version of android will soft brick your phone, but I believe the most current Bell firmware is still in Jelly Bean.
Is it as easy as downloading the correct firmware and flashing it using Clockworkmod Recovery?
Thanks

Thanks. So if I'm understanding correctly I just flash the latest firmware released by my carrier (4.4.2)? Is there anything else to watch out for when choosing the firmware?
Also, before flashing should I make a backup with Clockwork Recovery or any other program? Will Clockwork Recovery still be present after flashing with ODIN?

Yes, flash the latest firmware for your phone. Be sure it's firmware for the i747m and not anything else. Always make a backup if you ever screw up or want to go back to where you are now. You will lose everything by flashing the stock firmware with ODIN, even clockwork mod recovery.
Thanks. When I made a backup before going to Dirty Unicorns I used Clockwork Recovery. If Clockwork will be deleted by flashing with ODIN, how would I utilize that backup if I needed it? Should I use another program to back up?
EDIT: I flashed it and everything went smoothly. Sincere thanks to everyone who gave me help!
