Phone app requesting superuser - Verizon HTC One (M7)

This just started today. Anyone else having the Phone app request superuser?

I just had "reset notify" request superuser, and I'm at work so I haven't had a chance to figure out what it exactly is yet.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Phone asked again today. Only one it seems. Tempted to let it go haha.

I have it also.

At least I'm not going crazy. I managed to catch the command and it's trying to chmod 666 a modem file. I'm going to turn on full logging in su to see exactly what file.

If the stock phone app is being granted root, might there be a possible root exploit somewhere depending on the command?

I doubt it. I would be more interested to see if it's checking for root to change or disable something.
It only does it about once every other day though.

It happens to me too. Running BoneStock 1a. I have it set to deny and not prompt me and haven't noticed any difference whatsoever.
The phone app asking for root randomly seems like a dirty hack someone made and those tend to be sloppy. What if you could symlink the chmod target, or adjust the path variable to have it execute something else?
I am now pretty interested to see the command it's trying to run, lets turn on logging and see if it happens.

I have gotten it a few times, not since v1.0f but nothing I changed would make it stop, not sure what the hell it wants permission for and wy it's asking for it, but I also denied it.

I've also been getting it several times in the last few days.

I get it on my stock rom just after unlocking bootloader and installing supersu on launch day. Like others I just denied it. Haven't seen any side effects yet since then.

HTC Service Accessory or something similar to that requests root every few days on mine. Is that what you guys are asking about? Haven't had the phone app request access yet.

No... the Phone app. I haven't had any other system app request root access on any of my devices, it completely undermines the security platform.
If the Phone app is being granted root on a stock phone, that means that app is whitelisted for root access somehow. And wasn't there a recent Android vulnerability that allows you to alter the code of a signed APK without affecting the signature?
---------- Post added at 04:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:54 AM ----------
This is the command it is trying to run: chmod 666 /sys/devices/platform/mdm2_modem/msr_info
The mdm2_modem is public rx only, but would it be possible to change the app's PATH variable maybe and have it execute a different chmod since I can't tell if it is using the full file path to execute it.

Well my little newb investigation turned up nothing.
The Phone app is run as user "radio" uid 1001 which, unlike root, does have a PATH set to outside /system. Write access to /data/local/ would almost certainly give root but I'm sure that's probably known already.
Android bug 8219321 would have given root to original versions of The One running 4.1, but the Verizon version runs 4.2.2.
Oh well, obviously couldn't have been that easy.

Wouldn't chmod 666 make it writeable? That would be a sneaky trick is they put that request in there to check for root and change something. I feel like root = free tethering to Verizon lol.
I would think that there is a root exploit available for the one, but there is no point in using it right now because system is protected and the phone resets whenever you try to change system.

Yeah it makes it world writable which could be relevant depending on how that file is used by other processes. I'm sure there are others who have been at this longer so I won't waste my time looking for a unicorn.
And I think people would still like root even if they lose it on restart.

I'm getting this issue on a stock Rogers HTC One with root. Has anybody been able to gather the SU logs?

As was posted, it's trying to make a modem file writable. Fixing permissions might make sense. It also probably means that this is no big deal.

Need Xoom WiFi boot.img

Looks like the boot.img on the WiFi only model is slightly different. Flashed the rooted boot.img file and now I'm stuck at the Dual Core technology screen. Anyone have this available. All help greatly appreciated!
UPDATE
See thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12432218
Can someone post the stock xoom wifi dump of the boot.img, recovery.img, system.img, and userdata.img in case something happens?
Apparently it looks like its slightly different than the wifi+3g version. Also is the overclocked kernel file working posted by coolbho3000?
i need the answer too... i m comfused.
Alright I have a stock Xoom tablet now Just gotta figure out how to pull the boot.img file off. Any ideas and I'll do it ASAP.
No clue mate. From my knowledge you have to be rooted, or have the SDK on your pc. I think. Neither which are available as of now
So is the wifi only version able to be rooted as of now?
currently, yes. We need a new root method. Well I would not say a new "method" but their need to be some modifications done to the original rootboot img file. Shouldnt be hard for devs

Think for the Xoom it would be from a windows command prompt:
adb shell cat /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/boot > c:\boot.img
I could be wrong but try it and see.

It's actually a Permission issue.
/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/boot: Permission denied
So someone with root needs to run it. Anyone wanna help out? Im not getting mine till tomorrow but by then I suppose you would have yours exchanged

That's actually the catch-22... can't get root because we don't have the right boot.img file. I think it's going to boil down to Motorola releasing a stock one.
If anyone is up for IRC chat - hop onto Freenode and room #Xoom
I can try if someone tells me what needs to be done. I tried copying it over to another folder in root explorer but no luck.
Update: Ran through the fastboot oem unlock in hopes that it would resolve the Permission Denied. It did not.

You'll end up with a (soft)brick
No luck
I also booted into fast boot, tried and still got no permission sometimes and no such directory some times... If some one will walk me through getting the img file I will gladly do so
how can I remove the softbrick, I saw this AFTER I tried to root and now I cannot even turn it off, just sitting on the Motorola Dual Core Technology screen.
ok I also now need to the stock boot.img from a wifi xoom. Can anyone help? I can flash it if someone can provide it please, if not I guess I will go exchange my xoom in the morning.

different image version

I sent my tablet off to get repaired after it was bricked. My new version is different when it boots than it used to be. the new build version number on my tablet is " Acer_AV041_A100_1.015.00_PA_CUS1 " and it is on kernel 2.6.39.4+. is this what others have? When i boot it now comes up with 2 acer logos one in the upper right and left. than changes to the normal center acer then android .

This is exactly what I've been waiting to see. If you can get adb up can you paste the output of adb shell cat /proc/cmdline ? The boot loader change may hint at Acer doing some work on the cause of the brick.

try:
Code:
adb kill-server; adb root; adb wait-for-device; adb shell cat /proc/cmdline
If you are rooted and adb starts as root you shouldn't get permission denied. If you still do get permission denied give output of :
Code:
adb shell ls -l /proc
This will be quiet large, but we really only need to know the specific line like this:
-r--r----- root radio 0 2012-08-12 02:44 cmdline
And make sure that you aren't getting any messages like "Root isn't available in Production builds"
Thanks.
i got unknown option '-1' aborting. I will have to pick this up tomorrow afternoon.

ZTE (AT&T) Avail 2 [Z992]

Looking for any information anyone may have for rooting this device.
Android 4.1.1 JellyBean. I've tried motochopper, previous avail methods and a few other JB specific attemps. All of which have failed, fortunately, I'm not-yet bricked.

**BUMP** on this. This is an inexpensive decent Android phone. The camera is the only drawback but everything else is fairly decent. I am going to start looking into this, because being able to root and mod a cheap phone to have as a ready back up is essential.

Bought this great little phone as backup to my attic which I will never part with. Have found that it is wonderful for the price. I don't use camera on any phone so that's never an issue. This phone is a quiet little secret. But impaired as more are sold its secrets will be released.

How by using Cydia Impactor helped you root the Z992? I have it as well, but have no idea how to root from start to finish in DOS(?) Then, after that, Is there a basic custom ROM that is easily attainable for use with detailed instructions?
I am fairly new to all this but been trying for about 2 years. I just never knew how to add a custom ROM or have a reliable RECOVERY after rooting, I am still unsure why I try to begin with, I guess to have a cooler phone, but its complicated, I read the threads, and there are so many terms not being throughly put to instruction decriptions. Bare with me, I am very articulate....
Can someone help me understand, even with some links to basic knowledge and full detail on what rooting, roming, and recoverying or maybe even unlocking a phone - Z992 to be in particular at the moment. thanks - helping words help others learn. Peace til next time..

THIS IS FOR WINDOWS AS I ONLY USE WINDOWS.
Cydia impactor works like a charm I have had success in rooting my z992, my fiance's z992 and my alps momo 9 3G tablet (Chinese tablet). Details on how to root using Cudi's impactor:
Download cydia impactor (just google it)
Enable USB debugging and connect to PC as media device
Plug in phone now on and unlocked
Open cydia impactor (it should say "# Drop SU.... ")
Press start or go
Wait for it to go back to where it says "# Drop SU...."
Unplug your phone (no longer need pc)
Then download superuser
Open app and scroll left to right and update su binary by clicking where it says SUPERSU 1.6.1... THEN CLICK update
Download busybox by stericson
Open busybox click install at bottom left
After completion manage apps in your phones settings menu and delete busybox. You now have root access! Enjoy.
Information on rooting, unlocking, roming, and recovering... :
Rooting will give you access to system files and functions that basic users cannot access. Like deleting apps that came preinstalled with the phone and take up a bunch of space.
Unlocking: allows you to use a different carriers service on your phone for example using straight talk in att or T-Mobile phones using their byop program sum card service.
Roming: means you can install a different Android based operating system on your phone. For example Android 2.3.4 of a att Samsung galaxy s2 on your phone instead of Android 4.1.1 or Android 4.1.2 on att avail 2.
Recovery means you have access to install any type of zip file to your phone through clockworkmod, twrp, or cynagen mod recovery to make system changes on your phone.
Did I answer all of your questions or do you need more understanding of the terms? Glad to help you!!!

There is not another rom that works on this phone because ZTE put a block on the system CPU and I recommend not trying to find another rom as you will most likely end up not having a working phone

Does anyone know if there is a way to tether the data to other phones and/or computers? This would be really helpful. I am fully rooted but i do not have a custom recovery installed as it will not allow me to view/edit my files on my pc via data cable and that is something I need. Also if someone has a custom recovery (i.e.: cwm, twrp, cm...) that works flawlessly with this phone (at least allow me to connect to pc) or knows where i can get one it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Its free on the play store
by Müller, Lemons, Buxton Corporation
In WiFi Settings
Set "Change Device-Profile" to Gerneric ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set "Change Setup-Method" to Netd-Ndc(master)
Scroll down to LAN Settings
Enable MSS clamping
and
Enable Routing fix
That will enable tethering to work.

I used frame root and busy box on rails and ... follow this link for an apk for a WiFi for your phone that works perfectly once you put your settings in the app..I used this on a 992 and a 993..use the apk frame root and try each exploit..you cant screw up the phone with this and you'll keep your stock recovery and rom ..I've had no bugs at all doing it this way.I also needed no unlock codes..

I have needed nothing from ATT to do the WiFi tether..I run my laptop off my phone all the time..I never needed any network codes from ATT..you should only need a code if you wish to trade carriers..

need help from someone who is s-off and not *TAMPERED*

ive got a dump from andy, whom is tampered.
now id like a dump from someone who is s-off,rooted,and NOT showing tampered in the bootloader, please
in the booted os,plug in,open a cmd window:
adb shell
su (if needed)
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 of=/sdcard/mmcblk0p7
exit (exit again if needed)
adb pull /sdcard/mmcblk0p7
youll find a file named mmcblk0p7 in your adb folder. please upload somewhere and pm me a link. i have successfully changed my t mobile one from tamper free, back to *tampered*,and then back to tamper free again. i just need to make sure you vzw guys are the same
dont worry, this is harmless- just dumping a partition, not making any changes.

Is that something I can do from terminal emulator Andy? If so I can do it that way. If not it'll have to wait til I get home

um the title is asking for someone who is S-Off. Unless you're S-off and havent rooted yet...
Happy to help, but not real familiar with adb... I may need a little hand holding, this is what I got and it doesn't seem right. What mode should my phone be in? I've got about 25 minutes before I have to leave for a few hours... but if anyone's around, I can help until then.
Ah my fault. I took the "lemme change the title real quick" to mean straight stock.

I can confirm that you need root to read mmcblk0p7. Permission denied otherwise. With a stock device, someone would have to be "in the know" with a root exploit thats being withheld to get at that partition.

You've done everything correctly. There is no need for adb pull, simply plug in your phone and mount it as a storage device like you would if you were going to add music to it or get pictures off. You will see the file in the root of the mounted volume.
Or, use a file manager on the phone to email the file to you, or upload to dropbox, ect.

Oh, that wasn't directed at you. I had just tried it as well!
Just sent to scotty... sorry guys, be back in a few hours.
thanks dspcap,i saw exactly what i expected.
since the revone tool no longer works on hboot 1.54+ im not sure if this will work or not,as i asume it is doing something very similar.
but if you want to try it,im pretty sure the worse that will happen is that tampered wont go away. ive flipped back and forth a few times on my phone(hboot 1.44) and i dont *think* anything bad would happen except for the failure to work. but at any rate, try at your own risk.
in the booted OS,in a shell,enter:
echo -ne '\x00' | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 bs=1 seek=4265988
then back out,and boot to bootloader. hopefully tampered is gone. give beaups a high five for telling me the command so yall didnt have to dump, hex edit, and dd the partition back.
anxious to hear if it works for you or not

I really want to try this, but without any warranty if something goes wrong, I'm screwed.
Seems pretty safe to try though, so if no one else steps up I most likely will.
-- @scotty1223 would it be easier to flash the 1.44 revone htboot remove tampered then flash back to our stock 1.54 hboot?
EDIT: CONFIRMED WORKING!

just copy and paste so you dont mis-type the command
if i had a vzw version i wouldnt hesitate to test for you,i wouldnt have posted if i thot there was risk. but you never know,so the usual disclaimers. i have brought my tampered back a couple times now
im thinking of leaving the flag in place and hex editing what the tampered banner reads, lol

Now that would be an awesome idea!!!
I really like that!
would it matter if I am stock CID?
also you don't think the hboot matters?
trying to code above?
also are you able to make us a RegawMOD Bootloader Customizer
that some brave sole may be willing to test??
EDIT: CONFIRMED WORKING! Thank you so much Scotty!
SOO nice to finally get rid of that Tampered flag!
Code:
C:\apktool>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
[email protected]:/ # echo -ne '\x00' | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 bs=1 seek=4265988
ock/mmcblk0p7 bs=1 seek=4265988 <
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
1 bytes transferred in 0.007 secs (142 bytes/sec)
exit
C:\apktool>adb reboot bootloader

IMO its not safe at all to flash an hboot that wsant really intended for your device, tho sonic has done it with no apparent consequences.
im not 100% sure what revones tool is doing,so its hard to guess what might happen. i dont know if hboot is asserting some write protections, despite being s off,or why exactly their tool does not work with 1.54 maybe some other firmware is preventing the tool from working,im not really sure.
in theory, the adb command is a bit simpler and more probable to work. if 1.54 is in fact asserting some write protections, then it will fail just the same, with no harm done.

[Q] MLB Perfect Inning

MLB Perfect Inning 2015 will not run based on my phone being rooted. I've installed Root Cloak and added the app to the list of apps to hide root, but it still won't run. It seemed to run fine on KK, but I began having the problem when I upgraded to LP.
Any help/advice will be much appreciated.
Have a blessed day!

Wait your rooted on LP? I didn't even know this was possible. Sorry I can't answer your question.

It is if you have a developer edition. Not sure about the retail edition.

Oh right duh. Yeah the retail is a no go as far as root goes.
Hey, old thread, but what worked for me to play this was to rename su and reboot the tablet. After the reboot MLBPI2015 started and played fine. May mess with other apps that are expecting to find su where it should be, but in my case I don't need root very often and I can still gain root just by calling it by its rename.
Cheers
How?
How did you change the SuperSU app's name?

Hi. I just used a terminal program like ConnectBot to get a local terminal, used su to become root, remounted the system partition read/write, renamed the su binary to something like su-saved, remounted the system partition back to read-only and exited the terminal. I recall I may also have needed to reboot the tablet before MLBPI would work but that was it and then it would play. Doing this does make su not work transparently since root applications are looking for the su bin with its original name. So it's not entirely painless, but it did get MLBPI playable. Then when you need su access again just go back into your terminal and, instead of using su to get root, use su-saved and then you can go through the process again but rename su-saved back to su.
I don't play MLBPI anymore, but I recall that once it was past the install that I could put su back in place and it would continue to play, but that was months ago and I'm not sure what updates or changes they've made since. But this worked at the time.
Hope that helps.
