Well this is the desire (bravo) section, and the method to root is a bit different. Try posting in the desire HD for more help, although I'd advise that you read the many existing guides before asking questions in order to reduce your chances of getting flamed

If your using a newer software version, you may have to downgrade before you can root.

If you have stock rom 1.7x you have to downgrade it. There are some guides on how to do that in the developer part of the desire hd forum

Ok. Thanks again....much appreciated. Sorry for all the questions. Is there a Rom available with a workable version of 2.3 available? Or will the DHD be getting the upgrade. Find the phone has a lot of stuff in it I don't need and I think its creating a lag. Thanks again

If you have S-OFF you can use GingerBreak - GINGERBREAK LINK
If not, you need to downgrade! ... DOWNGRADE LINK
after downgrading, you can then upgrade to 2.3.3

You should do some reading before you commit to anything. Try and search before hand as your question gets answered daily.

If you downgrade to froyo and your phone is running gingerbread, you will mess the bootloader. If you way to achieve root use the Hack Kit...there's no other player in town for your device.

read this and follow it to a T. If you mess up your phone it's because you didn't read it and skipped instructions or assumed with things. Remember, you are altering your phone, it is not OUR problem when things go wrong

are you sure it's good for build 2.37?

You will lose the data in the phone...the sdcard is not touched at all.
When i first rooted mine over a year ago, i used the Ultimate Multi Tool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180639
For backing up my contacts and sms messages and transferring from one rom to another, I use MyPhoneExplorer (found on the market), so far not had any issues using this.

Hey there, i'm on the same "level" as the topic creator and yes, i've been reading around + reading the AAHK manual a couple of times now and well, i think im ready to use it. There is just one thing that bugs me, and that is the downgrading. I understand the downgrading itself, but im just unsure about the whole; "Was my DHD shipped with Froyo or Gingerbread and what does this mean and how do i check it etc etc" :/
I really hope someone can help me with this
Thanks in advance!

HTC Desire HD Success root using One Click Root
I want to share that if anyone wants to root HTC Desire (DHD) A9191 Gingerbread 2.3.5 ---> One Click Root 3.7 works well.
1. Used Windows 7 32 bit (because HTC drivers did not work in Windows 10)
2. I unlocked the bootloader as intructed in htcdev.com/bootloader/
3. Downloaded one click root from sendspace.com/file/ylqkve
