How come nandroid backup misses so much?

I was under the impression a nandroid backup was like a full clone that you'd do on a computer. But after restoring with a nand backup there's always a ton of little settings I need to change

what kind of little things.. whenever i do a nandroid restore.. everything that was there before is still there

+1...are you performing the backup from the recovery screen or using the adb commands? What recovery are you using, CWM or RA? I know CWM was missing things when performing a wipe so maybe the same holds true for performing a NAND backup? I am using RA and I have not run into this problem.

Off the top of my head.. I always have to reset my Handcent message ringtones and Exchange account information.
Maybe I was a bit frustrated when I typed 'SO MUCH'. But it definitely misses some stuff.

Again, are you sure CWM was missing things during wipe, or are you just repeating what you've heard? I assume you're talking about dalvik-cache, and my testing shows that this is NOT true.

Oh, and I always lose my custom dictionary too.

It backs up absolutely everything. You must have used an old backup.

Well from my experiments cwm doesn't wipe dalvik. When I did a wipe and flashed fresh 0.5.3 I was stuck in loop

Yep. It's the very last thing I do before flashing a new rom

so proper nandroid backing up is..
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
THEN do nandoid backup?
or is it.. do nandroid backup first THEN do all the butt wiping?

no no no, backup first then wipe. Otherwise you are backing up a blank phone pretty much
...For OP, not sure but is it possible the application data like handcent is not stored on the phone but in the cloud? Or maybe on the sd card and it does not link the old settings file? Are you using app2sd?

Nope. Haven't tried app2sd yet

Well, then the only thing else I can offer is using titanium backup or the like. What rom are you using when you did the backup?

Did you check to see if the dalvik cache was still there after the wipe? Because it resides within the data folder, so doing a data wipe automatically wipes the dalvik-cache folder anyway.
Unless there is something else related to dalvik that is outside of the /data directory.
Are/were you using a current version of CWM?

Whay exactly does a full wipe consist of? Using RA 2.3 recovery.

I usually wipe system, cache, and dalvik that way I keep all my dl app but some wipe data also. U can wipe boot as well.

A full wipe, in preparation to flash a new rom would consist of wiping:
data/factory reset
cache
dalvik cache
boot
system
I always wipe everything 2 or 3 times. I also flash Calkulin's Format All after wiping all of the above. That might be overkill, but it makes me feel better before I flash a rom, lol. You get a completely clean start.

What would happen if i wiped everything and rebooted? not that i wanna try it or anything just curious

My definition of a full wipe using amon RA is EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except the SD card and when I flash a different rom, I wipe everything on that list with the exception of the card itself. Technically speaking, however, the list that k2buckley posted is correct.

If you tried to boot after wiping what I mentioned, you will either hang at the splash screen or it will boot you right to fastboot (not sure really though, as I've never tried, but it wouldn't boot, for sure). Since it wipes system and boot image, there would be nothing installed for you to boot into. Btw, I would avoid trying that lol.

That's crazy. Wiping everything like that is over kill. No need to wipe data as its all the apps that uve downloaded from the market. The only ones really needed are dalvik, cache, boot, and system. And I've only ever had to do it one time then flash a rom and it works everytime plus I have all my data and apps there still

He asked what a FULL wipe was. Not if it was necessary or required. And not wiping data when going from one rom to a different one (not an update of the same rom, but to a totally different rom) has ALWAYS left me with weird issues, such as wake locks, cm Widgets on salvage mod, reboots etc.
Oh well, we all have our own methods and rituals for flashing, lol. I will stick to my methods, and everyone else can use theirs.

It may very well be overkill, however, that is my method and it has served me well and has saved me a great deal of unnecessary troubleshooting. But hey, to each his or her own, right? Take care and enjoy the rest of your night....

I agree as well; I only restore my apps with data and my launcher settings, [person preference].

I'm guessing u know this but have u ever looked at ur data folder with root exployer or what ever. The app folder might have 5-6 apps in it and the app-private folder holds the apps u dl from market. So wiping it in recovery makes little sense. I've flashed plenty of different roms without wiping data and never had a problem. Plus on an upnote all ihave to do is flash the roms and gapps if needed and restart and that's it. No need to sit there for an hour restoring apps or settings

Not with my current setup. My data/apps/ folder contains ALL of my 3rd party apps except Anfry Birds Rio and my app-private folder is empty.
So wiping it in recovery makes little sense.

I believe you and don't have a problem with you doing it that way, however, like you, I, too, have flashed a great deal of roms and my method has also served me well. It is not wrong for me to use my method. It's just a matter of preference and nothing more.
Plus on an upnote all ihave to do is flash the roms and gapps if needed and restart and that's it. No need to sit there for an hour restoring apps or settings

You've tried literally everything? First and foremost you Wiped Data/Cache/Dalvik and then also Formatted System and Data manually before flashing? Formatting system and data is under "Mounts and Storage." I know a lot of people wouldn't get past the boot screen because they didn't do that...

Ok so I wipe all 3 then I should go to mounts and mount and unmount what? Then install JB v3 ones it's done what should be mounted or unmount ?then after that just reboot system?
I'm pretty sure my problem has to do with mounting and unmount ing

Don't unmount anything.. just format /system under "Mounts and Storage"

I only format /system or /data (if need be) before flashing a rom, never cache or dalvik, which are hash signed. A new rom, a new flash, a new /system, has different hash, which leads to cache and dalvik being rebuilt on first boot after a flash.

Okay let me simplify everything for you and you will not need to pay anyone for assistance. All you have to do is initially erase all data and factory reset, then install the new JellyBean ROM using clockworkmod recovery and after that wipe cache and dalvik cache..you can run fix permissions (i did but not sure if it matters.) If it still is stuck on the boot screen then wipe data again, reinstall JB rom, wipe cache and dalvik cache and wipe anything else you can wipe. After all that mine started working normally. If you are still stuck sent me a PM and I can assist you from Atlanta GA and for free!

Go into ClockworkMod Recovery, then Advanced, then Fix Permissions

I had a very hard time doing it too. The first time I did it I, when I setup the phone, it kept having every app crash, one after another. Managed to get back into CWM and try to restore my ICS and it kept giving me errors. I finally read something about a super wipe, but it didn't say it worked for the GNex, so I just did a cache wipe, and did the data wipe 4 times, and then installed JB one more time, and it finally worked. I never had to fix permissions or anything like that. Perhaps your phone just needs some extra wipes like mine.

Ok so I did everything u said I'm passed the Google screen and now on the X screen crossing my fingers that this works

Attached are three recovery flashable wiping tools I use when doing my work.
I find them to be incredibly useful tools that save some power button & volume rocker mashing, and time.

I use these all the time. There should be no problems.
The only possible issue is that there are additional Sprint specific folders in /data that should be deleted as well to complete the wiping process.
What happened with the other wipe zips?

Um read the post and the part where it says wipe everything except internal sd......does this mean it'll wipe external sd as well or not?
Also does this wipes Sprint specific files and if it does what's the repercussion?

Full Wipe is just like a factory reset, except it does not wipe your internal sd card. And like a factory reset, this will not wipe your external sd card. As shown in the OP it only wipes files in /data.
The repercussions are effectively the same as a factory reset you would perform in recovery.

I added a full wipe with factory reset zip to the OP and updated the post to reflect the changes.

There was a previous mod created by someone who just kind of copied and pasted and the wipe actually wiped some serious items that caused the phone to brick. I don't remember what it actually wiped (partition I think) but it was very important to the phone, it was eventually fixed but there were a lot of angry people with shiny new paperweights instead of phones.

I just wanted to confirm that when I was switching from Paranoid Android (CM10 based ROM) to Galaxy S fre3 2.34d (TW based ROM), I was left with about 2.5GB of internal space because the wipe options in recovery were not wiping properly.
I successfully used the factory reset zip and then flashed a new ROM and now have 11.65GB available on internal storage.

Just what i needed, it works flawlessly

I was running a CM M1 nightly and wanted to update I used the wrote and factory reset zip and it wiped my entire internal memory...
I'm not sure why this happened I used this zip before without issue but it sucked getting phone restored and trying to in delete at least pictures on the phone.
I noticed that the least couple of nightlies is creating a folder called 0 and moving all directories there. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
I just wanted to share not complaining. Thanks! :beer:

Sorry you lost your files.
The factory reset zip does perform a factory reset. That is what it is supposed to do.
Are you sure you didn't use the full wipe before?
I always store my important stuff on my external sd card so this can't happen. I also keep the factory reset zip in a separate folder so I can't use it by accident (I've done that before).
And yes, the CM 10.1 ROMs will create the "0" folder (which is for profiles) and will also usually create new (often multiple) sdcard0 folders.

Cannot open gallery

Hey everyone,
I recently flashed jedi invasion 5 rom to my tmobile galaxy s3. For some reason I can't seem to open my gallery, it tells me I don't have enough space, however, I have plenty of space in both my internal memory and my 32gb sd card. Any help would be great, thanks

What were the steps you took in flashing the rom, we need a little more info to help you out.

Go into manage applications setting and clear app data for anything that has to do with media storage & gallery in the system apps list, then reboot. That may or may not help.

Sorry about that. So prior to Jedi invasion rom i was rooted with some stock rom. I basically went into clockwork recovery mode, i wiped user data, wiped cache, wiped dalvik, and then i flashed the jedi invasion rom. I have actually redid this process over a few times already, still however the gallery fails to load telling me that there isn't enough space. I have tried formatting my sd card, cleaning out my internal storage, clearing my gallery cache... all of those didn't help fix the issue either. Although, when i downloaded a different gallery from play store, that worked just fine.

Tried it more than a few times already, thanks for the input.

Strange, only thing I can suggest from there is to wipe system and then re-flash the rom

It is strange... By wiping system do you mean wipe data/factory reset in recovery mode? Or is there another way you're referring to that does a more, for lack of better words, cleaner wipe?

I can't remember where it is under on CWM I'm a TWRP kinda guy. I think Mounts and Storage, and yes is't where all the system files are (the ones that aren't delete-able without Root Access). Like gallery and such. My guess some bad left overs from the other rom/gallery/camera aren't compatible with the rom/gallery/camera you have now.

You were right, I resolved the issue by fully wiping everything, data, cache, system, and even the internal sd. Thanks again for your help!

Fo sho, I hate the option to wipe system is hidden from people.
