I converted my backup Galaxy Nexus to Ting and am traveling tomorrow. I sat down today to try to make tethering work for my laptop and my nexus 7 (2013).
I'm rooted with stock JB 4.2.1. No native tethering app, so I downloaded wifi tether for root users. It launches but with errors, and no network is visible. I know ting allows tether, and it's checked on in my control panel. How can I make this work?
I opened a ticket with Ting customer support, but they say it's 5 days for a response. I leave tomorrow on a two day trip... that won't help.
So, how do I do this?

Took the leap 2 days ago and rooted my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch using Odin and the Zedomax v3 kernel. Root went fine and after a short minute I was rooted and installing Titanium Backup Pro, ROM Manager Pro and Wireless Tether For Root Users.
Having (free) wifi tethering is a must for me as I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (wifi version 32GB Grey) and need network access when out abroad and in the car. After installing the app from the market, I promptly opened it up and started tethering with all of the default settings (no encryption, ssid = AndroidTether, access control is disabled). The app shows that tethering is activated with no errors and broadcasting the signal. Now I switch to my SGT10.1 and open up network settings but there is no AndroidTether network seen. I refreshed multiple times and still nothing. So I grabbed a few other wifi devices (laptop, blackberry) and still, no AndroidTether network is seen.
I have checked the in-app Wireless Tether Log and there are no errors or failures. I have tried rebooting the SGSIIE4GT and still have same issues. I flashed back to stock kernel (rooted) and still have the same issues. Then removed root, rooted agin with Odin to Zedomax v3 and still same issues. Went to the distribution page for Wireless Tether and downloaded other beta and prior stable versions of the app and still same issues.
Soooo.... then I thought, maybe the hardware that broadcasts the wifi signal is busted. So I flash back to stock, unroot and go to sprint today. They activated my Sprint Hotspot service and BOOM! Pull out my SGT10.1 and the network is right there. Connect to it and it works just fine.
What is frustrating is my brother bought an SGSIIE4GT as well, we have the same hardware versions and running the same ROM and kernel and he can tether with no problems.
Not sure what could be causing the problems but hope I can get it sorted soon. Would very much appreciate any insight from anyone on new things to try. Anyone even having the same problems?

My guess it is because the Galaxy Tab doesn't support ad-hoc wifi tethering, which is what the wifi tethering app you're using broadcasts in. Had the same problem when I was trying to use it with my Touchpad. You will need a tethering app that supports infrastructure mode to be able to tether to your tablet.
Fortunately, Necrosan has been able to hack the built in Sprint Hotspot app (that uses infrastructure mode) to get free 3g tethering. That thread is here [HACK] [EG30] Hotspot Hack (3G Only for now)
You will need to be rooted and be using a deodexed EG30 rom, but there a quite a few of those around. I'm using [ACS][Odin]Stock EG30 Deodexed with Root 3.0/Busybox 1.18.4 and it is working great for me. Haven't even had LOS yet.
After you get all this done you should be able to use the Sprint Hotspot app and tether to your Galaxy Tab. Mine has been working great with my Touchpad so far. Hope this helps!
:-\
My brother (as stated above with the same hardware and software) tethers just fine to his SGT10.1 and his iMac....

To make sure its really broadcasting you should use a laptop or another computer with wifi to look for the SSID. If you see your device then the problem is probably the one stated above. If not, then there is definitely something else wrong
EDIT: just read that you already tried this. Sorry man, don't know what to tell you :/ If the Sprint Hotspot worked then I would just used the hacked version I mentioned previously to avoid paying monthly for it
Thanks for the responses, will give this a go sometime this week. Thanks for your help mate.

I've found that "Wireless Tether for Root Users" does not work for me on the ET. It acts like it is, but I can never see the SSID.
Try Barnacle Wifi Tether, it is working great for me.
Try this hopefully it works. I am getting my SGII today and this is main reason for rooting...
Does 4g work when you tether?

Barnacle did not work for 4g on my Evo so it may not work now. I believe it only handled 3g
Hi, I thought this wifi hotspot app may be useful - it doesn't require root or a monthly subscription, and it has a hotspot widget too. It works with ICS Galaxy Nexus.
Search android market for "Wifi Hotspot and USB Tether" by SVTP or use these links:

Thanks, this is a great stop-gap till a good stable rom with fixed wifi tether comes out!
worked Gnex 4.0.2 12/20/11
(mine and my gf's)
Just like all wifi tether it will pop up and say limited connectivity (no IP) but if you give it a few min and dont mess with it, it will refresh and share a valid IP.
Wow...works smoothly with Galaxy Nexus LTE without a single hiccup (not Rooted)!!! Thanks a lot. I think this will be the first App that I want to spend money on

disabled on the Verizon's Galaxy Nexus (CDMA)
Does this app work for 4G connection? It seems to turn off the radio for LTE and only enable 3G.

It works for me. You just need tethering on your account.
Anyone who's hesitating to root their phone should try this app. Works flawlessly for me over the Xmas weekend away from home!!!
I can confirm that Wifi tether 3.1 beta 9 works on kejar's Gummy Nexus 3.0.
And for those wondering - No, I do not subscribe to VZ's Hotspot service.
zman6900 -- thanks for the info!
I had tried a couple versions of wifi tether, including the latest beta (wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11, but each was causing the phone to reboot. The Wifi tether 3.1 beta 9 works on a rooted OTA with no issues so far.
you can do this with buglessbeast for free
and get a solid rom
im on telus in canada and the wifi hotspot feature works fine, and it's included, im currently using AOKP M3..
how does this differ from the paid version?
Downloaded and installed this app, when I went to the phone settings I saw wifi Hotspot was enabled. Does this mean that it enabled a monthly hotspot plan? other tether apps didn't affect the tether settings ?? pleeze pm me, I really don't want to pay for a tether plan....

Thx Akoolive. That app worked like a charm.
This will not work on my Samsung Galaxy Note I717 with ICS 4.0.4
I have a rooted and unlocked Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.1.1 with T-Mobile service. Everthing Plus Plan 1000 mins. I just moved into a new apt and internet wasn't setup this past weekend. I used my phone to wifi tether and everything was all good until around 3GB now when I tether to my Nexus 7 I get a T-Mobile upsell page for WiFi Hotspot. I thought they wouldn't have any control over my devices because they aren't from T-Mobile all unlocked/rooted? Anyone else running into this issue? Any way around this? Thanks!

Well known that they're simply blocking certain browser UAstrings. Use a UAstring switcher in Chrome and you're golden.
Yes. Note: Did not have to pay for tethering as plan is 'grandfathered in' somehow.

Does the GSM Galaxy Nexus come stock with built-in settings for Wifi and USB tethering that allow tethering on networks such as T-Mobile? I know these settings should be a part of the stock android experience, but I haven't been able to find any information definitively saying a stock new nexus includes this out of the box.
My Play Store gNex has settings for WiFi hot spot & bluetooth tethering
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2, never used it though.
The GSM Nexus from the Play Store has options for USB tethering and WiFi hotspotting, and they do work without purchasing the option from T-Mobile, but if you do it and TMo finds out about it they will disable it for a period of time.

Yes the Play Store Nexus has tethering out of the box. WiFi, USB and Bluetooth are all there and not blocked.

Well, T-Mobile can't do anything to disable your tethering because they don't run the software/firmware on your phone. You buy your data and they will let you use it.
What T-Mobile likes to do is detect your browser's UAstring and if they see that it's a desktop one (like Chrome), they will redirect all websites to a tethering up-sell page. If this does happen, it is extremely easy to get around by using a Chrome extension to change your UAstring. It seems pretty sporadic though, as some months they like to do it and others they don't. YMMV.
That's what I meant about disabling, the redirect thing. Up until now I had no idea that you can get around it. I'll have to check out the fix you talked about.

All,
My Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone is rooted and is running Android 4.1.2, build MA7 and I would like to enable WiFI tethering. I know that at some point in the past I was able to do this. Now, no matter what I try, I cannot get it to work. For example, I just downloaded and installed PdaNet (using the link for Sprint customers - aren't we lucky ).
When I ran the program, the following message was displayed:
Hotspot/Tethering Error
Unable to connect to data network; turning off Hotspot/Tethering. You may not be subscribed to the Hotspot service; please contact your phone company.
I have seen this same error message when trying several other similar programs.
What should I do to get WiFi hot-spot functionality working?
