[Q] PA Help + NEAK kernel - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have PA (paranoid android) 3.99 and I flashed NEAK kernel, the problem is I'm not getting the "promised" battery life even though I undervolted and chose the battery mode in the uNeak engine app. Battery doesn't last long, and I'm sure that my battery is good because when I'm running Sammy, it's working fine. I don't know whether the problem is with PA or with NEAK

Check wakelocks and whether phone is deep sleeping properly. Over the first cycle on 4.2.2 Pacman ROM with NEAK, I managed to get 5.5 hrs of screen on time over a total of 2 days 5 hours. And I had not UV'ed until that point.

I also hav problems with aosp roms battery life , screen on time is good about 5:30 but standby time horrible I get about 5% drain an hour.
Wakelocks are audioout2 , l2hsic and secrilfdinterface.

How can I measure wakelocks, and do you recommend a different kernel? Other than neak that is? (Not like I can find any that supports aosp)

I'm dedicated to PA there's no way i'll change this ROM, it's just so good, the problem is I have to compensate with battery /:

You can use Wakelock Detector and BetterBatteryStats. And till now I'm satisfied with Neak.

Neak Smart Response: Normal mode
NEAK Options: Sched MultiCore, AFTR+LPA Idle Mode, Ext4 Boost
CPU Voltage Control: I undervolted all frequencies by 75 mV (Edit: Now at -50 mV as I got a random crash at one point)
GPU Control: 900 mV, 925 mV, 975 mV, 1025 mV, 1100 mV
FSync Control: Enabled
The few other controls do not relate to battery life / performance.

[Q] Better battery life (Kernel Confusion)

Recently i've ventured into kernel threads wondering how i can get better battery life on my G2. I consider myself pretty well versed in roms but Kernels are a whole new animal for me.
I have read so many threads im becoming dizzy. If i have to flash a kernel for better battery, which one? I dont have demands for a faster phone. Most of the threads about kernels i have read are all about getting a faster clock. Im fine with the speed of my G2. I just want better battery.
Can some one provide me with some literature on the subject, point me in the right direction, or even better, answer some questions for a noob in this particular subject??
What Kernel to use?
Can i flash over CM 6.1 Stable?
Do i need to wipe before flash?
Any assistance will surely allow me to sleep better at night.
Thank you in advance.
I can tell you im running virtuous 7.2 i find pershoots kernel the best for battery.

If you want great battery life, don't use a sense rom. They're battery hogs as it is. Stay on CM 6.1 and flash pershoots latest kernel. Get setcpu and set a profile to 245/245 when the screen is off.
With these settings I get awesome battery life and I'm overclocked to 1497.

Oh ya i learned through trial and error to stay away from sense roms.
Can i ask you why you overclock? I dont find myself in any moments where i think the phone should be going faster.
I can flash pershoots over cm with no problems?
Can i get a link?
thanks for the response.
Well i lpike sense but only when its ocd sense too sluggish on stock g2 speeds. Also even with ocing and runing sense my bat last just about all day. It sometimes needs a shot a juice if im useing gps or playing a lot of games but thats it.

Decent battery life on my G2.
I'm running htc sence on mine with the pershoot kernal and cpu tuner.I have tweaked profiles and my battery life is better than b4.Example, i took it off the charger(ac) yesterday morning @ about 9:20am & today Thur, i checked the [email protected] 11:50am and my battery is only @ 40%.(1 day,3hrs & 31min's later)not bad. That's WITH moderate use.

So whats CPU Tuner? Do you have some suggestions for how to tweak the profile? Can i get a link to the pershoots thread? Is this the right thread? --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847672
Do I have to wipe before flashing and then reinstall cm over it?
When I went into SetCPU, it always kinda confused me. That could be why I was never interested in overclocking.
I realize I have a lot of questions. Im just a careful and thorough person.
Simple.
@dangabob13...Don't worry about all the questions i'd want to b super carefull as well.First, cpu tuner is a free app in the market much like set cpu except u get more options as far as customizing your profiles.Second you can find the pershoot kernel right with in rom manager.Just go to the download rom section & its the 3rd one down.I didn't wipe and i haven't had any problems. The reason i switched to the pershoot kernel was because i was having problems waking up the screen with HTC sense and the kernel it came with. This fixed the issue for me.No need to b confused it's actually pretty simple. My profiles for cpu tuner are as follows:
Under the "Current" tab: i have the governor set to "conservative" i have the cpu o.c to 1094 MHZ.No need to go crazy over clocking i find this to b fast enough for now. The rest of my profiles:under the "profiles"tab,
Performance:Ondemand-Max:1094 Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Good:Conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Normal:Conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Power save:Conservative-Max:1094mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Screen off:Conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Extreme Power save:Conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Keep in mind i also have wifi, blutooth, sync all disabled as well.I'm not saying this is guaranteed to work for you, I'm simply stating what works for me. Good luck i hope this helps.
Quick question....doesn't CM6.1 Stable have the pershoot kernel already? Also does the Pershoot kernel the one that goes to 1.8Mhz?
Not that I'm interested in going that high, but just wondering.
I OC for games mainly, but also to watch tv and movies, the extra umph really helps. My setup on SetCPU are:
Temp>40.2*C 368 / 245 Powersave Priority 100
Screen Off 245 / 245 Powersave Priority 90
Charging/full 1497 / 245 Interactive Priority 85
Battery<10% 268 / 245 Conservative Priority 80
Battery<30% 806 / 245 Conservative Priority 70
Hope this helps.

I dont have a conservative option under the Governor dropdown. is that important. Otherwise i duplicated your settings. Boasting 27 hours of up time and 40% left is bound to make me jealous ill test it out. Thanks again.
That's strange is your cpu tuner app up to date? I also wanted to mention that my screen brightness is set to 20%,heptic feed back is turned off and so is vibration. Along with a few other battery saving options you should see a difference in battery life.Obviously results will vary.

Ha its so funny. I have the same exact settings. i took a look around and turned off all that stuff. I keep my GPS on because it only uses battery when its being used. But i turn off wireless locations so that its not always trying to centralize my location.

What are your overclock settings?

What do you guys overclock your processor to on this phone? Back on my Galaxy S 4G I used SetCPU, so if that works on this phone too, what do you guys set it to, and why?
Cheers!
I think System Tuner is more popular now than SetCPU. I keep mine at 1.02Ghz to save battery life. If I really need major processing power I turn it up to 1.72Ghz using the Trinity Kernel.
With the new Trinity Kernel for the GS3 rooted running ICS UVALH2 I see Quadrant scores of 5800 and AnTuTu scores of 7800 - 8000.
Don't forget you need a custom kernel to overclock.
I set mine to 11.

You set what to "11"? What does that even mean? Pretty vague statement.
stock
I used setcpu to change clock speed & system tuner to control voltage, running at 810mhz with interactive+Cfq on SGS3 Rom+Faux kernel, with these settings my phone last over 10hrs with about 20-30% battery to spare & that's with heavy data usage

Am i suffering from battery drain ? schedulers?

Hi all
i just changed my rom from PA 2.22 to xylon 006 and i think i am suffering from some battery drain issue but i am not very sure ...
first off when i was using PA i am able to get about 18 hours of battery with 3 hours of screen time ( about 100% - 10% ) on stock PA kernel by the way , while on xylon my battery life is11 hours and 30 minutes with 2 hours of screen time ( 100% - 0% ) on Trinity kernel 1420 - 384
( stock/ franco kernel creates a yellowish screen on my phone whereas trinity kernel fixes it ) i heard 4.2 have some issues with battery and i am not really complaining just trying to make sure , oh i just bough setcpu from playstore and i realized i can change the scheduler ( noop , deadline etc ) and some weird stuff called interactive , ondemand etc ..so should i meddle with it ? how should i tweak it to get maximum battery life?
While i am on Trinity on dark PA 4.1.2, I know the kernel has some problems for now with 4.2 so i suggest you try Franco and install Trickster MOD app from the play store. Its free.
When installed, just apply the Trinity colors in screen section. Voilà!
Or reflash Xylon twice then the kernel. This might not be the kernel fault. Could be one gapp sucking all the juice... have you installed spyCPU and better battery stats to see which app was running?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
kays thanks for the great advice downloading the app now! still what is the difference between franco and trinity kernel?

Share, what rom and kernel are you using? Why?

I am a fairly new xda user, but not too new about flashing and using tweaks.
I created Thread to share what I use and why and might help others as well.
Beforehand, My priority in a rom and kernel is smoothness and battery life. I'm a light gamer(kairosoft lol)

hadi! I was wondering, I tried your kernel once... twice... Wasn't sure if there was too much tweaks in my phone or whatever the problem might be, when I used 1.2, my phone goes into sleep state when I locked device, and when I wake it, it took quite a few seconds for the device screen to show up... Actually I'm a mass kernel flasher so I'd really wanna try your kernel too. Is your lulzactive 245-1024MHz settings battery friendly?

ERM... Actually, no. PMR has some very very nice tweaks and mods that just reduces lag.[Not significantly but quite nice]
*[Smooth]|[Powerful]|[WONDERFUL]*
ROM: SlimBean 3.1.0 by camcory
Kernel: forfivo's v2 (smartassv2 - sio - 245MHz/1401MHz)
Tweaks/Mods: JellyBOOM V2, Seeders APK, Disable CPU Rendering, Disable Surface Dithering
For the ROM, I prefer SlimBean because of its size, with JellyBOOM, Seeders and forfivo's maybe it only takes 80-90 MB's compared to any other ROM. So for a stable, slow connection (around 20-30kB/s) it's fairly fast enough to download.

I used SlimBean once, the fluidity is actually better than Arco's CM10 by default. But I'm not sure if its my device or any other reasons, it consumes battery quite quickly when I underclock it. Nothing much to be said about forfivo's kernel. Been loving it since ICS v1.

Certain Tweaks when used together tends to clash and gives negative effect.
And if those apps you installed will run on background it tends to get laggy.
I use only Seeders and Disable CPU rendering.
I use forfivo's kernel because hadi's version have problem running on my device.
Until hadi fix the bigmem bug on external sd. I'd stick to forfivo.

Screenshot from Monday AM. Please ignore the mobile network signal bar, every version of Cyanogenmod 10 I've used has the same problem where it stops logging data after about 10 - 15 hours, but my phone does pretty much always have at least 2 bars of signal where I live and work (split about 60/40 between 2G & 3G/HSDPA)
If it helps, here are the cpu states for the last 55 hours useage:

The best battery saving rom is CM9 with the older 2.6.35 kernel. So for example Arcos CM9 RC2 or RC3, the older Slimbeam ROM or this mentioned SmoothieICS. (The other two ones are just modified and themed CM9 RC2 or RC3) For even better results you need an undervolting 2.6.35 Kernel.
My battery for example lasts 3-5 days with CM9 RC2 and Arcos stock kernel. With my personal uv kernel it lasts even more.

But smoothieics claims it has deep sleep implemented xD. Any way I can get a hold if your custom kernel?

Sure. Just drop me your e-mail via PM and I will compile one with stock voltages you then can adjust with incredicontrol to your needs. It´s because my kernel is preset to extreme undervolting voltages and that might be to much undervolting for your cpu.
Btw Arcos kernel has also deep sleep implemented and all custom kernels are basing on arcos kernel, so not only SmoothieICS is going into deepsleep but all custom roms are doing it as well.

If it helps, here are the cpu states for the last 55 hours useage:

your awake time to screen on ratio suggests to me that your battery life could be far better than it currently is! download WLD or wakelock detector and see what is keeping your phone awake so frequently =). Then u can get greenify to hibernate the app when u r not actually using it =D

Unfortunately the two main culprits are K9 email and ebay, both of which are pretty important for me to have running and not in a hibernated state.
However, from the last charge on my phone I have got 2 days, 4 hours, 29 mins with 12% battery remaining - so could be worse I suppose
Thanks for the suggestion though :good:
New rom!
