How warm is your warm display? (colour)

Just got a One X and thankfully all the reported 'defects' don't seem to be there. However the screen colours are far too warm. The biggest problem is with flesh tones looking very reddish. Its best illustrated by taking a picture of my hand with the camera, which shows up very red indeed. However if I import the picture to my PC its acceptable. My screen is Acer which supposedly runs colder than Sharp and Sony, but thats not my case.
Should I exchange my unit? I have 48hours to return the phone with no questions asked. Its perfect otherwise and I heard that the warmness disappears over time. If true, how long does it take for the warmness to normalize. Also is there a software available now or in the near future that would solve this (rom, mod, etc.)?
PS> I'm still on 1.28.415.9 because I haven't received an update yet.

I just tried using "Screen Adjuster" from the Play Store, but the results were horrible. I really need to know whether the warmness subsides overtime because otherwise I have a perfect unit and don't wanna gamble it away for a creaky, ripply, dead pixel unit.

I passed by the store and compared my phone to the two display models and a sealed unit. All three had the excessive red hue warm colors as mine. When I say excessive I mean very excessive. Its best viewed with the Mirror application. It almost makes me look like I'm fluorescent pink Almost the color of this icon.
Someone please chime in. How red do you look in the Mirror app?

I'm begging here, someone please acknowledge my existence and answer my simple question. Does the Mirror app make you look red/pink like your are badly sunburned?

Thanks so much for answering me. Vascularised is a great way of putting it. I can almost see the blood flowing through my capillaries. I hope this is just a software issue. Outside in daylight its much much better.

HTC should have added a light in front panel.
And after "vascularised" it has a litlle "drunk" effect.
After ZombieBooth, HTC just invented DrunkBooth ...

I tested the front camera some more using Skype. It seems that there are two reasons for the red hue. The camera software is messed up, and so is the screen itself. When using Skype the image from the front camera looks very red on the phone, but it doesn't look as bad on the PC (although still red). This leads me to believe that the camera software is not calibrated, and the screen further compounds the problem. I'm hoping 1.29 update will help a bit.

I just ordered this phone as lost my optimistic 3d. If this is a problem with all sets I can't understand its not mentioned in any of the reviews I've seen. Hopefully means forward is a bit messed up

Well as far as I'm concerned I have not seen, or heard of, any One X unit that doesn't have this problem. So far I have personally examined 6 phones that have this problem (all worse than my phone). Also three XDA users have also confirmed this (one on this thread and two in other threads). I have yet to see or hear that a One X exists out there which does not have an extremely red hued front camera.
Until someone confirms otherwise, it seems to me to affect ALL One X's.

In camera settings, put the saturation to -1, this looks far more realistic. However, I don't know if it looks the same on another device as is does for me. For all I know, it could be making my hand white for the pc.

Thanks that helps a bit. I'm sure HTC will have to fix up the camera software in an upcoming update because this is just unacceptable.

Some have said "Change the ISO to 200"
HTC said "Go to settings / apps / camera / delete data" .. it actually seemed to make at least a little difference.
I put a new ROM on there with Android 4.3 and it seemed improved but still had the coloring issue you showed.
It seems like software could fix it, but it's hard to tell. Why are HTC replacing some of these if it can be fixed with software?

I understand people like taking photos of all kinds of stuff but why even bother taking a picture from 200 feet away in a dark room? Even if the colors looked better it seems like such a pointless photo. To each their own I guess.

Took that specifically for this post.
Almost seems that zooming in takes care of the lighting, but obviously then more pixelated.
Why is it a circle pattern too? I'm tempted to pull out the lens cover to see any different.
Was this an issue with original 4.2.1 release on other carriers?
Is this an issue on Google Play Edition?

These were taken at the Volbeat concert last week.
The only adjustment I made to stock camera settings was changed it to nighttime mode.

its too dark and you are too far away. Maybe the lumia 1020 could handle that, but I doubt anything else would get a decent picture.
You could try my olympus OM-1 with manual shutter and telefoto lens... Got some great Northern lights shots with 20second shutter.

My point is that it just shouldn't be that grainy. I'm not looking to mount that shot on the wall. My GS3 AOSP would have done a lot better I feel.
Point is, camera sucks in low light. I'm not the only one having the issue.

This times 1000. People's cell phone camera expectations have gotten ridiculous over the last year or so. Want tremendous shots in any lighting situation? Go buy a DSLR, like Dark Jedi said. Simple as that. Not saying you can't be disappointed by how some shots come out, but let's be realistic. It's a cell phone.

Guys, quit flaming the OP. This is a widespread hardware defect on many Ones and there's a huge thread about it in the international forums here:

If your camera shows a bright purple/pink tint in low light, it's defective. HTC is currently trying to pass this off as a software issue and will roll out an update with 4.3 to lock down the ISO and do some color balance tweaking. It'll sort of mask the problem but probably isn't an actual fix. Wait until after the update, and if it still does this (which is more than likely), complain to HTC customer service and they'll probably let you send it in for repair.

I think one problem with the OP picture is that from what I can tell, the only lights in the place are those on stage. However, all off those are colored lights. No natural, white light. I think that is one of the biggest reasons for the tint.

Have you tried using HDR or Night mode? HDR is supposedly better for low and high light environments.

Go to the camera image adjustments, and try changing the exposure next time. You are taking a photo in a dark room where the lighting is illuminating only part of the photo. The camera's light sensor can't tell what to do for the light source.

I disagree about the GS3. I had it and it was really not that great. At that distance and low light expect grain and probably some strange colors if you are asking it to recognize strange lighting. Not sure if the purple tint is due to the lighting in the room or some other issue though. Photography is all about light whether you use the camera on the phone or a top of the line DSLR....still about the light. At that distance you are just not getting enough light to the sensor. You could try the max iso setting, but not sure if that would make a difference. Otherwise, you would need to leave your shutter open for longer which in turn would cause shake.

well I think we can say this is a software bug at least and not a physical phone problem.

Well I took a couple of photos at night using different settings. I think the photos came out alight and don't see the complaint some has with the camera.
First one was night mode
Second one was hdr mode
So very useable camera at night just have to take the time to set it up. I am sure I could get better photos if I used the manual settings.
I know anyone who are camera nuts will say auto mode never works right like you think it should. it's just made for people who can't use the individual settings

I've also read in a couple of places that HTC is replacing phones with the issue.
Has anyone had theirs replaced? What was the process? I just hit a Verizon store, and they said they were unaware, and therefore weren't going to be replacing them.

Also, spent a half hour on the phone with HTC, of which they took me through the *yawn* rudimentary steps of clear cache and data on the Camera app, wiping cache from recovery, etc.
They said they will NOT be replacing phones, and I'd have to wait for the 4.3 update, of which the guy "knows for a fact that it will be fixed then"
Oh well..

Anybody having problems with the camera using a BofA app. I'm trying to deposit a check into bank of america and the picture keeps getting rejected! I never had the problem on my bolt.

Is there anyway the purple haze issue is caused by heat?

So yesterday I got a replacement one from Verizon and as soon as I opened it I checked the camera and the camera was fine so I was glad about that. But unfortunately I accidentally updated and my phone suddenly had the issue. Again today I tried to use the camera and the camera was fine so I plugged it in to charge and put a case on it when I picked it up it felt a bit warm and I checked the camera and the issue began to creep up again. So to test it I unplugged my phone let it cool down infront of a fan and it was perfect again. Anyone else try this or am I over thinking this.

Every HTC One has the purple hue issue. Whether people want to admit it or not. The low light setting was set too low. Find a white wall or counter top , in a dark room, take a picture point blank, one inch away, two inches away, three inches away, they all have a purple hue. It's not until you back it up a ways so that light passes through that you see the purple hue disappear.

The first picture was when the phone was nice and cool. Second I took after watching a couple of YouTube videos while on the charger while the phone got warm on the same spot. I just think it's weird how that works. Is it possible that the sensors are being messed with by heat?

From the looks of the shadows and the lighting, the first picture, the whites on your bed are bright, the aluminum from your phone tells me you either have a light on or sun passing through a window. if you take a picture in a dark area, like the second picture where the whites in the bed are dark and the reflection from the aluminum on the phone indicate that a light is turned off or the sun has settled down, and your going to see the purple hue.

I think it's a software bug Verizon will fix. (they can't replace all our phones with new ones, or we'd get the shaft and get refurbed unit casuing an uproar)
anyway we will find small thing that help fix it but all phones eract differently and this camera software is prime example.

I do not have a purple hue on black or white. I had a little bit of purple tint when I took a picture of fire, but the camera was so good it captured the fire and the surrounding area as well.

Also, If you could answer a few questions about your phone (you'll find the info on the last few pages of the thread) that would be great. We are trying to find some kind of pattern to this issue.

I have the purple hue issue as well. I think there may be something to the whole "caused by heat" argument. If I power off my One and leave it sitting for say 10 mins and do a cold boot there's no purple/red/blue hue. Once I use the phone for 10 minutes or so it pops back in. I actually had it remedied for over a week and a half after doing a factory reset and cache wipe. Then all of a sudden it came back. THAT makes it seem like a software issue. So idk. Seems both are viable arguments based on my personal experience. I hope it's software bc it's annoying as all hell.
I wanted to add that changing the ISO to 100 that some people have had success with doesn't do anything for me except change it from solid purple to a light purple haze. A little better but still very noticeable. HTC addressed the issue and said it was going to be fixed with the 4.3 update so I'm curious if the Sprint users actually have seen the issue resolved or not.
UPDATE: I added a thread on the Sprint HTC board asking if the issue has been resolved or not. So we'll see what they say

I hate when non-Apple products fail in quality assurance! I'm running nightlies of CM and I get the purple tint.

My wife and I both got the HTC one on the same day. Mine has the purple hue in low light and hers does not. To test this I would open the camera and lay it down on my couch so the camera gets nothing but black. Mine will slowly turn almost completely purple and my wifes will remain completely black. She also does not have the tint in low light conditions. I also think heat may play a role. One of the first things I did when I got my phone was run multiple 3dmark tests to see how hot it gets and also test the performance of the graphics chip. I had taken pictures before this and noticed no hue until after my phone heated up really hot. Since then it has had the issue. I think the OP is on to something as I was thinking the heat damaged the camera myself. I also think HTC probably knows this and just wants us to think its a software thing that can be fixed. Even if you adjust the low light settings the hue can still be seen, just not as bad. I bet the update to fix this will probably be something that disables that portion of the hardware so we all just think its been fixed.

It not heat and was you and your wife's settings the exact same? I can get rid of the haze if I lower the iso setting and if I use HDR or night it goes away.

Camera Purple tint fix?

Aside from waiting on an update, would flashing a rom or kernal help at all with the HTC one camera issues?? I really want to avoid getting my phone replaced for a warranty replacement. I am passed the 14 days, i just rooted my phone and got S-Off. Someone please help!!

I am running cm10.2 and I get the purple haze. 10/11 seemed better that 10/9 build... Might just be wishful thinking tho.

If you are having issues with the camera then you really need to have it replaced under warranty. The issues we are having is from a bad image sensor, not software. The bad sensor will have more issues with purple tinting in the edges, generally turn out darker and more grainy even at the same exposure and ISO. I have a few sample pics on Google Plus. Also below is my HTC One with a bad image sensor issue (left) next to a CLNR from Verizon (right) that does not have this issue. They are running the same software and have the same default settings applied before I recorded this. You can see the camera software on the bad one cycling through various levels trying to optimize the image.

So bottom line - Don't wait on an OTA to fix this. If you have an HTC One with a bad sensor then get it back to stock and replace it under warranty.

Mine seems to be ok. Mine actually when put camera down will stay black for a bit, then the purple will creep in. But it definitely doesn't change around a lot like the video shows. Sounds like I got a good one. Mines also the blue one from best buy so, idk if that makes a difference.

The good sensors still have a bit of issue with tinting in very dim photos, right at the cut off where the automatic flash would otherwise kick in. That can be fixed with software. What I had on the first one was no consistent across the entire image. For lack of a better term it just wasn't as sensitive as the replacement or my T-Mobile HTC One's sensor.

Uh, sorry to break it to you but both are equally defective. If it shows anything other than pitch black (maybe with a tiny bit of noise) when you set it down, your sensor's bad. Both of yours are going bright pink in total darkness and have severe tinting in low light shots.

If I lock the bad one to ISO 200 still pure pink. The replacement is black center with pick edges. Did you check the pics on my G+ album? There is definitely a difference. Could be this new one is bad too, I don't have my T-Mobile HTC One any longer to compare side by side. I'll mess around with them both and grab some screen shots so you can see what I am talking about with the ISO setting.

It's definitely better but it's not good. A working sensor should not be showing discolored edges on any ISO setting, especially the lower ones like 200.

Agreed, better but not good. Poor choice of words on my part. In any event, there is a wide variety of image quality even with the same software which was my point to begin with.
Received replacement #2 yesterday. Still notice a maroon (this time) noise at ISO800 and can definitely see it at ISO1600. ISO 400 is dark starting out and just barely gets a tint in the corners when the camera is left sitting on. No issues at ISO 200 and lower. Left to right in the attachment is original, replacement #1 and replacement #2. Screenshots are from #2. Guessing this is as good as it's going to get.

Dose any one know how much it will cost to fix this issue at phone repairer in Australia. Not under warranty and what part of the phone needs fixing. I would like to give them as much info as possible so they don't start trouble shootng with all the stuff I have tried already.

Flash Bleeding: is Sony going to something about it?

Hi guys,
I have this phone for 3 weeks, and I think it's a great phone but simply can't stand the fact that when I shoot in low light condictions I got that flash bleeding simply destroing picture quality.
I've used the marker trick, but after a week or so the coloring has gone away and I had to do it againg.
Guys, so frustrating you need to paint a 400£ phone once a week come on....
Will Sony do something about it, or they consider just enough they've said "You're shooting it wrong" like reportend on Talk Sony Mobile forum?
Will they just tact as if nothing has happened and fix this on Z2 Compact?
Always loved Sony for the way they are different form Samsung, Lg etc. but really disappointed this time...

Ever heard of HTC One purple tint issue on camera? I'm pretty sure it's a hundred fold worse than this camera issue and up to now HTC didn't provide any official recall or fix for this problem. AFAIK this issue only shows up on situations where an image would be worthless. I mean who takes picture of a black sky without any objects? Or takes a picture on a empty dark room without any focused subject nor takes a portrait picture of an object which is on a far distance than normal. All I can say is take it easy... Just use the camera normally and you won't encounter the issue. I've done low light pictures from the compact already from night concerts, Selfies on night, low light shots on some friends and stuff and I haven't encountered the light bleed issue. The only way I can reproduce it is if I take a picture of the sky, taking a picture of something a few meters away from me or taking picture on a empty dark room(ghost hunting? ).

Always loved Sony for the way they are different form Samsung, Lg etc. but really disappointed this time...

My HTC One and also a friend of mine's were replaced because of the purple tint camera issue. That was a hardware issue with the camera itself (or perhaps the assembly process) on the first batch, this unfortunately is 'just' a back problem probably due to the last minute change from glass to plastic and not the camera itself.

we can only speculate. They wont fix it with a fw update. Changing the back panels are the only thing sony could do. are they gona do it? i dont know, and i dont think so
ps: i also had to repaint it, but now its fixed. the paint stays longer on the second or third time that you paint it.

i disagree. yes this bleed is a lot worse when taking a nightsky pic, or in a complete dark room, wich are things that you probably wont do. but you can also reproduce it under situation that you might come in the future where light is low, but not complete dark.

Yeah,i had blue tint in 2m my dark room and on potrait of guitar in dark pub so you can reproduce it quite easy(painting did the job after though)

Ok so I guess the color of the phone does indeed matter. Since I really can't reproduce the light bleed easily without that much effort. Also with HTC One issue. For previous owners we know that it took HTC almost a year before recognizing it as a hardware issue and keep denying it for months right? And yeah they didn't provide any recall. They just simply say that it's a software issue and will be fixed on future updates and is only fixing phones that are sent to their service centre.

on HTC One X we have green tint when using flash , but it can be fix by a software http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36287923&postcount=1

How is that possible that you don't have the light bleed issue? Did you make that photograph as described (i.e. of the sky at night with flash on)? When did you buy your phone (or what is its manufacturing date)?

Actually my HTC didn't have the problem at first, it only started after the 4.3 update. Then I just waited for 4.4 in hope of a fix, obviously nothing happened so I sent it for repairs. My friend's had this issue since the beginning on 4.2.
Anyway, I think we are being a bit off topic here

Yes will post it later but bear in mind I have it in black and also use the included leather case.

I also plan to buy the black one, but all users are reporting flash bleed even with that. Also, I don't think the leather case would change anything, because the light finds its way into the camera through the plastic back, which the leather case can not prevent. Just to be sure, could you try taking those photos without the leather case?
I really hope that Sony fixed this (at least quietly in the background). When did you purchase it?

I was talking with the support about these cam and beelding problems.
The short version is: sony gives a fack about these problems. So dont except any update for that.

Will try........overall am very pleased with this phone and its cam, I do own a 808 and spate of SLRs so this one is competing very well with them. Only thing thats needed is RAW support and more controls in manual mode, truly lacking compared to my 808.

Or they just don't want to make it official/public, so that they don't have to replace all already sold models. (As in case of the earlier mentioned HTC issue)

other forum do said sony has an updated version of this that solve the problem few weeks back. Not sure about credibility
