So criticism of our mod-overlords will not be tolerated?

This is in reference to the NilsP/Joelz petition threads that were closed by willverduzco, and the resulting lashing that he posted here. While there were a VERY small minority of posts that might have crossed a line of respect, an overwhelming number of the posts in there were simply people showing support for the developers that deserve that recognition.
I find it disturbing that the moderation team can't seem to take some criticism here. This is a community, and if the mod/admin team can't at least listen to the members of that community without mocking them or belittling them as was done in this thread, then this place is truly lost. Which is sad because it was (and in a lot of regards still is) a great place for android users/devs to get together.
I'm sure this thread will too be locked, and I'll take my whipping of the cat-o-nine-tails for daring to challenge the overlords, but this is really a sad state of affairs.
"iron fist" lol.
yeah, i'm sure this will be locked too.

i understand you are upset that nilsp did not get his badge for "reconized developer" and im not trying to say he does not deserve it (because is one of the great devs still on here).
but the way you decided to handle it was not good. posting it in the development thread to get it seen more is not the way to go. if you feel like he deserves the badge, then voice your opinion by pming Developer Committee please dont try to start a war on here. it will only end badly. we are already have enough wrong posting going on by people mistaking this as an INC 2 thread. please dont add to it.
if you dont like the rules then go to a different site. there are some of us on here that still want to keep order and help others and not make this a flame site.
*i am ready to be flamed now*
Dudes he gave us a proper way to appeal, which I personally didn't know about. Its not as epic as "challenging overlords", they just want us to follow the rules.
This "iron fist" thing has been talked about for weeks. There was a huge article on it in the portal about the sense of entitlement, people thinking for some reason that donations = labor contracts, the devs being frustrated by users *****ing, among other things. The easiest way for them to circumvent it is to have a zero tolerance policy, so they're not exactly gonna be nice about a whole lot right now. My advice to yall is to just let it go and be cool.
They run this place, we don't, period. Lets just enjoy what it does for our gadgets guys... They obviously are going through a rough time, the least we can do is make it easy on them.
Everyone needs to remember this is only a website... mods I respect you but seriously IT'S A WEBSITE... I'm 20 and have more sense than most people on here this is all childlike and uncalled for... this is a community not a hierarchy...

I wasn't all bent until I read their responses. That is where I had a problem. The way that they dealt with this was disconcerting. All we wanted to do was to show some support for a couple of peeps, and if we did it wrong then educate us without being jerks about it.
Your thread is gone.

3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.

*READS RULES*
Ok, so that makes sense for the one that was in the development forum, but what about the petition thread? I don't see anywhere in those rules that say that we aren't allowed to show support for another member/dev or question the decisions of the mods.
Sure there was probably a couple of members that might have pushed it a little far, but I don't think any of it was really over the line (but admittedly I didn't read every single post and I'm not going to) - just voicing displeasure about it, and showing support.

im all for keeping the devs here, but posting a flame thread is not the way. (im also not stopping you from voicing you opinion if you do it the correct way.) it just adds fuel to the fire. that's something we don't need.
"If they disagree with a moderator's actions, users CAN complain (not in the forums, only via Private Message). We are putting systems in place to ensure that mods ask for advice from the team in complex situations. Senior mods and administrators will do everything we can to ensure that moderators wield their power for good, not evil. Fair but firm. Firm but fair. It's a balance we strive for daily, and this is a responsibility we all take seriously."
if you feel that he was wronged the do the right thing by pming the mods or the committee. then threatening the mods after you thread was closed is still not the way to get your voice out.
(thank you by the way for serving our country.)

About 6 moderators to handle it, and really only 2 keep up with it (me being one of them), the others log on about once a month. First of all, I don't like closing threads, it's just ruining freedom of speech, which is kind of the whole point of a forum, if I have to I'll edit every single post, but I like to let people speak their mind. I also never mention anything somebody did, even if a name isn't mentioned, anything someone in particular did. In the mods post he said about the member who is threatening to leave, well, I'll admit it, that was me, and anyone could have found that out. BTW, I'm not the first one to do that. I would never do that to one of my members. I hope this doesn't get edited or removed. I'm not whining, I'm just saying my opinion. Nothing wrong, nothing bad. Just saying it. Also, I never come back at my members in a mean or insulting way unless they come at me on a personal level. Not a moderating job level, but an actual personal level. I think it's wrong to go to your members and tell them they are just whiny little crybabies who need to grow up.

I can see both sides of the argument. Nils is a great dev and should be recognized as a dev. The mods have a site to run andm unfortunatly, there are quite a few immature people that visit these forums and flame away, are disrespectful, and flat out rude. I would like to think that the mods realize that not giving him his dev title after all he has done for the community, was a mistake. I dont know if the will acknowledge that, but it is a mistake. On the other hand, and I have even been guilty at times, there is way too much flaming, rudeness, people demanding of devs, and moronic behavior all over this site, it has become really pathetic. If the mods actual felt that they needed to bring down the hammer, they should have started a long time ago and not let it get as bad as it is. I appreciate this site, but I am also thankful that there are other places I can get quality roms for my phone. Xda just isnt what it used to be when I joined several years ago.

Yeah, and for a mod to put this text when moving a thread is not going to help:
"Moved: I'm incapable of posting or filing an appeal properly, so my thread was moved."
Members are going to cross the line, and honestly act childish at times - sure. But the moderation team shouldn't address that with even more childish behavior.

First off as a fellow veteran I thank you for your service. However from what I've read about this site it was started in Europe so our American sense of 2nd amendment rites is kind of a mute point. This was and is a site created by devs for devs, us users are just here for the ride without much say in the matter as it isn't a democracy.
This fued some have going with Hacre I think is pointeless. To tell you the truth I think he is some type of enforcer on here. From what I can tell from googling him he's been asked before by mods to respond to posts in the exact same manner he is now. Hasn't anyone noticed not one mod in that main section is from America nor has said anything about Hacre's posts?
I think all the drama here is getting out of hand and its teime to just let it go. Yes I think they should have left the petition threads alone, but the op of the Nils thread asked for it to be locked. Yours I think was a mistake but you pissed someone off by reopening it on your own, maybe should have asked first? In my opinion this has done more harm than good to both Joel and Nils but I guess it wouldn't be xda if it didn't get all blown out of portion in a hurry and quickly go to ****.

Zero Tolerance (IN EFFECT)

Consider this the beginning of the end.
TROLLS/FLAMERS/FANBOYS
As of this moment Zero Tolerance is in effect. What does that mean for you?
It means...
1. Trolls - you are not wanted/needed
2. Flamers - you will not be tolerated
3. Fan boys - I'm glad you are a fan of a certain developer. That gives you no right to bash/flame/troll anyone
You will be infracted quickly and without warning. Do it again after that and you will be banned no questions asked.
A lot of the trolls/flamers/fanboys here think they are cool, just floating under the radar to avoid repercussions. Well, we have been watching you, and its ending.
So in short.
Consider this your final warning
I don't care who you are, this applies to everyone.
Thanks.
Edit from the Archangel: if you see problems arising, pm us mods or report it, we will jump on it ASAP. This won't work unless yall help us out to help the community.
I see no problems. I actually encourage this. Good luck

It goes both ways, some of the developers are just as bad and one of them is out of control. Not going to say who but I'm sure we all can figure it out. We are all here to learn, and have fun messing with our phones. It shouldn't be so much drama with one another. I do appreciate all the developers but they also need to follow the no drama rules. If someone has an issue take it to a pm or just go straight to a moderator to handle it.
Also if someone can't read and posts something in the wrong area, instead of ripping him a new one just ignore it. Then report it to a mod and have him deal with it, that would keep all the drama down to a minimum.

This goes for everyone...but in a thread the originator especially in a dev thread has control of how much offtopic chat and if the have a general and/or q&a thread for their rom they hsve control of questions being redirected to the appropriate thread. That being said trolling and flaming will not be tolerated. We are all expected to act civilized and like adults. The childish back and forth is over. And please don't call others out in public. Report the issue and we will deal with them directly. Calling them out in public will gey u infracted.

Wikipedia definitions, which I think nail it:
Troll - Someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
Flaming - Hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity.

[mini guide] xda

This thread has been compiled to offer my advice to users (especially new ones) about using the XDA site. Although there are other longer guides telling users how to use the site, I think it is valid that I give tips based on my experience on the site. This is a Mini guide which means that I will only highlight key information about XDA which may or may not have been explored in different threads.
As I say in all my guides, suggestions are like gold to me and I just want to make my service better. All reasonable comments are welcome. Please PM me if you have any urgent problems. I am sorry if my service is uninvited.
So Enjoy
1) Post in the right place! Although it is obvious, it seems many users do not know this. XDA is split up into topics which are then (i like to think) split into 7 key areas.
-General= for all those general comments relating to a topic
-QandA = For any questions you have
- Modifying/Hacking/Unlocking = For more advanced discussion.
- Software Development = Think of it as Discussion about ROMs. Usually only advanced users are allowed here too.
- Themes = As you've probably guessed - for themes.
- Apps & Games = Again pretty self explanatory.
- Another development Place = This is basically another development forum.
Post in your device specific area and your questions will be answered quickly.
2) Is it necessary? Your question has probably been answered before so search for it. If you find nothing go ahead and post your question making sure it is in the right place. If you are clumsy and post in the wrong place or post a duplicate, there is a higher chance you will get trolled and your thread will be closed. This leads onto my next tip.
3) Getting trolled can be part of XDA. It is usually just funny and causes no harm. However when it crosses the line it becomes flaming. This is against the rules and should be reported immediately regardless of who does the flaming. And when you do get trolled, don't feel disheartened. Everyone will get the opportunity when a thread is screaming out asking for a joke to be made. Some users will also get the opportunity to feel the troll.
4) The hierarchy. On XDA as you can see, people have different titles.
- Everyone starts as a junior member. With fewer than 10 posts you will be locked into a CAPTCHA system to stop post spamming and try to teach users the value of a post. You will get the signature ability at 8 posts.
- After 30 posts a junior member evolves into a member.
- After 100 posts a member becomes all powerful and evolves into a senior member.
There is no additional benefit to the post/title change system apart from additional respect from other users.
You then have Recognized Contributors, Recognized Themers and Recognized Developers who are members nominated for their contribution to XDA or the theming section. You will receive development tools, an ad free template of XDA and the development forums when you get this title.
You then Have Elite Recognized Developers who receive gadgets as part of their title.
Next is the Forum Moderators title. These are the kings/queens of the forums. They manage them and keep them squeeky clean.
Then you have senior moderators. They ususally look after the Marketplace.
Then you have Administrators. Each one has their own area.
At the top of it all, Mike Channon the Forum Administrator. He is the 'Bourne Ultimatum' if you like :laugh:5) The thanks system. Give thanks when somebody helps you or when you find a post 'interesting.' Contrary to popular belief, the thanks system holds no actual value on XDA apart from maybe status. Maybe this will be an improvement into XDA; implement the thanks system deeper. To bar up on the thanks meter:
1st bar - 26
2nd bar - 51
3rd Bar - 101
4th bar - 201
5th Bar - 501
6th bar - 1001
7th bar - 2001
8th bar - 5001
9th Bar - 8001
MAX - 10,000
6) Tech Support in the Dev Thread. Many devs do not appreciate PMs for tech support nor posts for tech support. There is a dedicated Q&A forum for that. Put it there.
7) Write clearly and use good english. As someone who speaks 3 languages I know illiteracy is a big problem. Not just for the speakers but for the readers. It is also against the rules. You will get quicker responses and more respect with good english. Posting in other languages is OK as long as the correct english translation is presented. Google Translate will aid you with this. Although this isn't the Rosetta Stone helpline, I am always keen to help. PM me for help if you want to post something and don't know how to articulate it. And with this I move onto my next tip.
8) Give basic info when asking for help. Do not just leave your question without basic background like phone, software, problem etc. Maybe you should consider putting this information in your signature once you gain access to it.
9) Help others too! By helping others you will gain thanks and again: respect.
Thankyou for reading my guide. For a similar guide by the all seeing owl mf2112 check here.
Special Thanks to deedii for all her support.
I have spent quite some time typing this review, please do not troll. All suggestions on the other hand are more than welcome. Please hit 'thanks' if you appreciate my massive effort. Sorry if this is not something you wanted. Even though the guide is long, I call it mini because it does not cover everything.
NOTE: Sometimes I find myself on XDA in the early hours of the morning providing the best possible. I sometimes do not pay attention and will get angry quickly. I never mean any disrespect to anyone. If I do cross the line I am sorry in advance. Please PM me and bring my comment to my attention. I will issue an apology ASAP. Even though many advanced XDA users have disappointed me I will always offer XDA the best. I am always trying to be as nice as possible regardless of what people do to anger me so feel free to ask for help with anything.
You need to change the bit about making a signature. You've said that when you hit 30 posts you can make one, but it's when a user gets 8 posts. But can be done right from the start if using the xda app
Velcro. What a rip off!
This is good, I think it will be useful especially for people using the app and not the website. I use XDA mostly on the pc so I don't think about how things look from the XDA app viewpoint as much.
I will review it again over coffee in a bit and then edit this post with any suggestions. Thanks! :good:
OK. Thanks again. I want to offer some ideas but not write them out so you can write them without altering the character of it too much. I am also trying to consider the length to avoid the Too Long;Didn't Read issue.
For part 1, your area list is correct for the XDA General Discussion forums, but not for the device forums. You might consider incorporating the device specific forums such as General, Q&A, Accessories, Themes and Apps, Development, and Original Development. Not all devices will have all sections depending on how new the device is and how well supported.
For part 4, you might also include "and Recognized Developers" in the first line and "or the development forums." at the end of the line.
For part 7, posting in other languages is ok but an English translation must also be provided. Best effort or a Google Translate is ok.

You need to change the bit about making a signature. You've said that when you hit 30 posts you can make one, but it's when a user gets 8 posts. But can be done right from the start if using the xda app

The signature on the app and the signature on the site are separate. You can set the app signature right away but not the site signature.

Well, given that it is a mini guide, no capitals might be appropriate. :victory: :silly:
I hate to create a somewhat unnecessary post but I have to agree with you. I just thought that capitals attract more attention but maybe lower case seems more appropriate. Wondering if i should change all guides to lower case.

If you created the thread then YOU are the OP (Original Poster) or it can also mean (Original Post) so I do not know what you mean when you say "OP".
Sorry every one I mean admin the person on top of him

Why don't you send him a kind pm to ask the reasons?
Edit: Are you talking about this thread? eagleeyetom already explained in his post why it have been closed.
All I can say is................wow
OP I was part of the Droid X2 community too. To summarize the events that took place over the past few weeks: The mods in their infinite wisdom decided our thread offered nothing to the community. Even though some of our posts were helpful to others and informative regarding android and other technology the fun we had was looked down on. This site is for the developers and those of us who do not create roms, kernels or themes but can answer questions are worth little to nothing. Unfortunate turn of events but there's nothing we can do about it....the decision has been made.
Let me clear up this "stupidity." The rules do not apply to everyone the same. If you had alot more inappropriate content and alot more "thanks" given in your thread, you would have been ok. But since you offered nothing to the community but some wasted space on the forum, your thread must and will continue to be closed. Sorry about your luck.

Look bottom line is threads like that have no real purpose. Now you may or may not like it but that is the way it goes.
Making a thread to complain about it will not do you much good.

I love XDA Forums and here's why

I just wanted to let me know that I really appreciate this website, one of the only REAL communities on the internet, no fights about religions or what is better, everyone helps eachother and well, if you want to know anyhting about your smartphone or add a cool feature, the chance is big it already exists on this site, when I need something for my phone i'll go to XDA 99% of the time. I've been on this site for a little over a year now and I couldn't go without it.
Thanks to everyone!
If you had a look once , you would have found similar thread right here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260915
But
Welcome to xda.. you should have a look at this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949604
And please don't create threads unnecessarily.. you will find some thread as this if you search where you could have posted instead of making a thread

well, I didn't bother to check your profile thinking it must be a new user as the user surely didn't get that such thread exists or one was just created an hour before this thread got created.. so my mistake that I thought people would know if they were 1 year member here already..
