I just purchased a 2013 Nexus 7 and was intending to root and install custom recovery today,{TWRP}, I mistakenly applied the JSS15R update last night. Before I proceed is there anything different I need to do to unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP 2.6.0 and install SuperSU JWR66N or V 1.55 ? Please let me know if there would be any alterations to the procedure. Thanks in advance !!
Rooting JSS15R is same as previous versions

Hi, i got my nexus flo a week ago. This is my first nexus device.I have some queries. I have unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp and rooted the device.
Will that prevent me getting OTA?
Also, does having unlocked bootloader and custom recovery cause failure to update the software?
(Not just the JSS15R but future updates to kitkat as well)
Also what is the odex and deodex in this thread? which one should i flash?

Odex vs deodex: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2200349
If I understand well, updates will 'fail' with custom recovery, whereas the update is flashed the firmware version number shows the old version. Explained in the guides somewhere.

Unlocked bootloader has no direct negative effect on ota installs.
With an unlocked bootloader you might do further actions which can affect the ota like modify or delete /system files. You might install an enhancement like apm. Those, among others, would prevent the ota update from completing.
Now normally root by itself would not prevent an ota update, but there was an issue with SuperSU v 1.51 and earlier which did prevent the ota install from completing. This was fixed in SuperSU v1.55 and above.
Installing twrp will not block the ota.
The ota will disable root and overwrite custom recovery by default.
If you would like to prevent that behavior, the easiest way is to
copy the ota update.zip and supersu update.zip to your virtual sdcard
boot into twrp
install ota update.zip
immediately (prior to reboot) re-install supersu

Thank you for the guide, updated to JSS15R. There were no touchscreen problems for me before the update and everything is just like before even after update. Hope someone comes up with a changelog soon.
Hi Guys. I'm having a Nexus 7 2013 (wifi only). It is rooted. (Stock ROM)
I have a question. Is that being rooted doesn't allow you to update your device via integrated system update? Or that doesn't matter. And your device can pe update via(system update) no matter if you are rooted or not. Thank you.
I wondered that all the time.
I also have the same question. On my phone(pantech vega racer 2), rooting doesn't affect OTA. But still not sure about the N7
Rooted or not, unlocked or locked, it shouldn't affect you from downloading or installing OTAs. What matters is if you have stock recovery or a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM). If you're on stock recovery you should be fine and can install the update normally. If you have a custom recovery you'll still receive and be able to download the update but it might fail towards the end of the installation although I've seen that users were able to successfully install OTAs even with a custom recovery.
Hi guys, as tittle say I am new at this, now I have root and recovery but I want to update via ota and because of root and recovery, I think, ota doesn't flash. How can I get latest official android, I believe it is 4.4.4, and, if it possible, don't loose root and recovery? Is there a way? If don't, where and how can I get latest android and root and recovery on latest version?

Hey guys,
I just bought a 2nd hand phone online and the previous owner is not a tech savvy one, he updated the phone's software to 4.4.4 but did not root/unlock bootloader. I currently just managed to unlocked the bootloader, and now im stuck with a phone running 4.4.4 with no root nor recovery. Before you guys advise me to search the forums, i did and the rooting methods are either fixed, requires a bootloader to flash kernels/superuser, or vice versa (requires root to flash recovery)
I have been looking all around the forums to no avail, any help would be appreciate.
Thanks
Since u have a UB try flashing this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2599619.
You have to flash offical 4.2 rom and root and install recovery than flash a custom or kernel 4.4
Can you not revert to previous stock version then use towel root. When I bought my phone it had ICS 4.2, used towel root then let phone update manually. Root was kept and I now have 4.4.4..
I got 2013 nexus 7 WiFi with ,5.1.1 lollipop, I rooted it with chainfire, its rooted now and unlock boot. Working all good, I have not got a custom reocvrry? Is that fine? And also will ota updates work? If I update will my root go ?
You don't need a custom recovery. You will only need it if you want to flash a zip. You will need to do that to for example install s custom Rom og kernel.
Since you have rooted your phone you will no longer be able to get OTA updates. If you want to get them you will need to unroot first. To do that open the SuperSU app. Then choose settings and then full unroot. After you do that and reboot you should be able to get OTA updates again. If you install a custom recovery or ROM tho, you will need to go back to full stock as well to use OTA.
If I unroot then I need to do root again by auto root chain fire? And also the latest update is 5.1.1 so when next update? I mean on the nexus 2013 7 is there no last update?

in less than a week the nexus 7 2013 will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. as long as you have an unlocked boot loader you should have no problem getting root again. you could try cf autoroot but I would either use the Nexus Root Toolkit or fastboot to obtain root again
