I wanted to run this by people before I attempted to pull it off. I've been reading several stories of how others found ways to save at least $100 dollars on new phones.
Costco is offering the G2 for $49.99 on a 2 year contract. Apparently, the Wireless Advocates don't implement their own ETF correct? So the only ETF is T-Mobile's $200! and since I'm in California, I'd hafta wait 30 days to surpass the "Buyer's Remorse" period, supposedly right?
I have one question first. Is it really mandatory to exercise "Buyer's Remorse" if you terminated your contract before the 30 day time period? You couldn't refuse to exercise that (for lack of a better word) "right"? So I can try to avoid paying the first month's bill...
Either way, here is my plan. I order the phone (with texting service removed lol)
Once it arrives, I call to ask the phone unlocked because I plan on visiting Mexico a week for thanksgiving (that's my story). I return with phone stolen or lost. Now, at this point, 30 days will have not passed. So I call T-mo n tell them my sad story. I'll "try" to plead for a replacement but I obviously expect them to say that I'll need to pay full price to replace the phone. I'll furiously refuse n have the plan and everything else cancelled, of course leaving me to pay the ETF
What does anyone think or have to say about this? If I can avoid paying the first month's bill, awesome. That'll be $250 for a brand new, unlocked G2! if not, that's $104 more. Still cheaper. Opinions please?
...or you could just be an honest customer and, you know, pay for the phone like us non-scammers do. Seriously. It's people like you that cause businesses to be so restrictive in their policies. If you were selling a product and people were scamming you out of said products, would you just shrug it off?

Perhaps a plan for an even cheaper g2?
1) Buy Mercedes, with insurance.
2) Have friend "borrow" Mercedes.
3) Report Mercedes stolen.
4) With insurance money, buy g2.
Net cost = $-49500, plus a free Mercedes for your friend.
Also options: buy house for heavily inflated price, burn down house, collect money.
Well, if the phone were only offered to buy for about... let's say... $250, and able to be used on at&t, I'd have nothing to complain about... but thanks for your input...
Really, i mean REALLY??? Agree with the "why not be honest". Many of us work for what we have and if we cant afford it.... well, we DON'T get it. Why is it so easy for people to steal nowadays?

Okay. So if I want an iPhone 4, instead of paying full price for the phone, I'll just commit illegal(?) acts and scam AT&T out of one and get it unlocked.
That's the point of exclusivity; not everyone has access to it. And that's also the point of... you know... unsubsidized costs. So manufacturers can profit.

That a boy! Plus I don't think you can unlock the phone for the first 30-some days anyhow. Tried unlocking a new blackberry through T-Mobile once and instead of getting the unlock code I got an email saying I have to wait x amount of days first.

The only dishonest thing the OP wanted to do was avoid paying for the first month's service. Otherwise he is just canceling a contract while adhering to the terms of that contract.
The reason this allows him to get the phone cheaper is because he can get it at a deeply discounted price and that price + penalties don't add up to the cost of buying the phone unlocked. Can't blame him for finding a chink in their armor.
You don't have to lie about anything, just get the phone then cancel the contract after a month.

Unfortunately when you cancel from buyers remorse you have to return the device.... he said he would lie and say it got stolen which is stealing..... sorry try again....

After the buyer's remorse period, he doesn't have to return the device, he just pays the early termination fee. He wanted to trick them out of getting the device back during that period so that he could avoid paying for one month service and still keep the device, which is precisely what I said was dishonest about the whole scenario.
I have two questions.
I have been eyeing either this phone or the GN for a while now, and I am about ready to just shut up and grab the SGS2 already.
Looking online, the only thing that should be coming out anytime too soon is the Blaze which I am still assuming is not an upgraded SGS2 (I don't know if people are just paranoid, or ready for another Vibrant 4g situation). So it seems like I won't be kicking myself in a few months about the SGS2 (minus, MAYBE, a GN release).
So long story short.
Question 1: Have I missed evidence on why I should wait 1 or 2 months to grab a new phone?
Question 2: What would be the smartest way to get one?
Short story long again:
Ebay has new in box phones starting at 499 with shipping, but one has no returns and the other has 3 days. Will ebay/paypal protection save me if I find out there are problems with the phone outside those few days?
I hate asking this, but what problems would I want to look for? Unless they develop over time I don't want to know about the screen issues I have heard mentioned vaguely, but others seem to imply it's not a big deal so if I never notice it then it's not hurting me.
I am wanting to use Ebay because it is 100 bucks cheaper than Amazon but Tmobile would only be like 598 or something. Should I stop being so paranoid and just grab it from ebay?
Sorry, I stayed up way too late with my finger over the mouse button and I am now just about ready to start pacing but I am not getting google search results to do anything to calm or warn me yet. Is it worth the 100 bucks to buy it from Ebay instead of straight from Tmobile?

Those people who have unopened boxes of galaxy s 2 are people who are eligible for an upgrade but like their current phone so they decide to make money of their contract. I recently did this.my mom didn't want a new phone so I used her upgrade to buy a new gs2 and sold out on Ebay for $500. These people are legit and Ebay will make sure you don't get scammed.you should just buy it
Question 1: Tmobile is not releasing a new amazing phone for awhile. (unless somehow the galaxy s2 HD comes over). But that is not likely at all.so there is no need to wait.unless you want to wait another year for the galaxy s3. Ice cream sandwich is just around the corner. Right now is the best time to get it.

Thanks for the response, I am just worried I get it and, say, the speaker phone is messed up and I learn about it a day or two after the return window and then I have trouble getting it fixed instead of just returning it or exchanging it.
I have never had to do that though, so 100 bucks is a lot to KNOW I can.

Seriously? You'd advocate risking getting your phone's IMEI number blacklisted to save $30?
The phones are $529 from t-mobile.
Why risk it for $30??? These "new" phones can be reported as lost then the insurance replaces it and they block the IMEI number and the sucker is out $400-$500.
BTW, Getting a "free" phone on a subsidy plan doesn't make the phone free, you're still paying for it over the 2 year term. With T-mobiles Unlimited Talk,Text, Web for $50 + buying the phone outright, over the 2 years a contract would run, you are paying out $1200+$530 for the phone so $1730. For the equivilant plan with a "free" phone you're paying $80 a month over 24 months so $1920.
So $1920 - $1730 = $190 You pay more for the phone than if you bought the phone with cash. And just looking now, you have to pony up $280 to buy the phone when you "upgrade" then a $50 rebate, so you're paying even more.
Heck, with T-mobile you can ge tthe non subsidized plan for $0 a month, pay $200 down, and finance the phone with T-mobile for $20 a month and come out ahead if you are looking for the least amount up front.
BTW, Ebay buyer protection is only good for 30 days after the sale, on day 31 the seller can report the phone "lost" and have it turned off and get their replacement.

You're assuming it's claimed as insurance fraud... and with taxes it's a 100 dollar difference. I do agree there is a risk though.
Edit: so thinking about that possibility I realized its sort of dumb for me to not just call up T-Mobile and see what they say about these sort if things (knowing they'd rather I give them NY money). I am legitimately thanking you for helping me solidify my paranoia to a point.

If you wanna be happy, keep your vibrant and wait a few months. I recommend getting the GN if you have the money because it has a better screen, but if you want you could wait until ICS is offically released and then buy it.
If you have been used to the iphone screen, or any good res LCD screen, youll notice issues with the display on our GS2.
I get the phones for free by price matching at best buy.thus makes them have no mail in rebate and no monthly additional fee.

I appreciate the opinion, although I am banking on "ignorance is bliss" when it comes to higher res screens. The expandable storage and currently only over seas options of the GN are why I am just going with the SGS2, but with sprint releasing one it is making me wonder if waiting would be smart. I would be happy with whatever I get, but I am pretty sick of my poor old vibrant.

Similar situation. I just traded some BMW work for a NIB SGS2 off of craigslist. Upgrade phone he didnt want.
Just contacted CS
I asked about what they said and all they could say is "maybe...". They can't/won't verify that I purchased the phone so if the person were to claim it was stolen I would be SOL (I have read about a guy who got the seller in trouble in a similar situation with Sprint, but I don't want to go off something like that).
I guess I just have to re-budget 600 instead of 500.
why not just print the page ur phone is advertised on ? if its ebay the guy would have to setup an account every time he wantes to scam someone

Pay with paypal. If the seller claims insurance fraud Paypal will get you your money back (may take time while they investigate but they will get it). Ebay is safe to buy from with all the fraud protection especially when you pay with paypal. DON"T DO IT ON CRAIGSLIST!!!

FYI, T-Mobile doesn't make money off handsets. When will people learn this. They make money off the monthly service. They are a SERVICE company, NOT a phone manufacturer. Go ahead and ask any question you want. In fact, T-Mobile prefer you have your own phone so they don't have to subsidize you!

I bought my s2 from craigslist for $550 (white). It came brand new in a box, however headphones were missing. I have bunch of good headphones here and there so i didn't care. But the phone was in original packaging and I got within 3 days. I am happy with my purchase.
The last time i bought my galaxy 4g first series from someone advertising on craigslist, brand new phone but when i brought it home and try to use, the phone mic never worked. I called samsung and they told me to ship it to them and I received my phone back within 5 business days. They fixed it for free and even paid for overnight shipping.
I never had any issue with Samsung or Apple.
You don't wanna know my story with Dell and ATT when I ended up paying almost $2000 for a Dell Streak phone I never received.

I am still pretty sure the blaze will not be an upgrade, probably just a 4" phone...
Any way, doesn't matter, I went to Tmobile and bought myself a new SGS2... having trouble with my new plan though... ugh...
I just bought this white gs2 in the marketplace from another xda member. Bnib as stated, no problems & for around $450

Apple is a menace to the tech world.
What I never understood is how carriers don't make a profit until the 11 month mark. Take two Epic Touches at $499 a pop, Sprint eats $300 of the cost if they offer it at $199. Then factor in the cost of a data plan with TEP and the data charge at around $175 for two phones. That equals $1925 in 11 months, minus the $600 Sprint ate on the devices equals $1325. So how are they losing any money? Unless my math is wrong they're making profits only a few months in to the contract based on the plan price alone. Some one explain this because I don't rightly get it.

Sure, it looks like a profit on the phone, and you can argue that. However the company will not consider it a profit until all other costs are covered. Figure it from a business owner standpoint. You have the cost of your store overhead that sold it, the employees hourly pay and commission from the sale, etc.. on a larger scale you have all the other costs you can imagine. Offices, higher ups wages, network maintenance, the list goes on. The "profit" can only be considered a true profit after a profit/loss analysis on a bigger scale. Many preferred retailers use the profit loss analysis approach to their stores when figuring how to pay employees. You have to determine how much it costs to run the business, and how much money you bring in. The difference is your profit or loss. That's why it takes so long to make a profit.
At the same time Didn't Sprint also say that another part of their loss for this past quarter was part of Network Vision as well? It's not just the iPhone for them right now considering they are building out a brand new LTE network.
So are people really saying that when phones are sold to us at a subsidized rate, that carriers actually spent more than the subsidized rate to acquire them initially & HOPE to make up or exceed the difference in the service plan?
I highly doubt it (though I could be wrong). Even when selling the phone at a subsidized rate there is always some type of markup over the initial investment, even if marginal (again I could be wrong)
How much do you think Sprint actually pays per Epic Touch?
I read that Apples subsidized rate was something like 40 or 60% more than other high end phones.

i guess its kinda like gas... the business can only mark it up so much/state taxes and competitors
but honestly if sprint bought $630 million dollars (if im reading right) on iphones... and didnt get a "bulk" deal from apple (or any manufacturer for that matter) its their own fault....
im not gonna start a business and pay retail on 1000s of products to sell them cheaper in hope that the customer becomes a "regular"
sprint can kiss my ass there is NO way a business would make it in todays economic state if they play the foolish "hope" card
and if all carriers REALLLLLLLLY pay retail for **** plastic devices over seas then looks like i know what im gonna be investing in....
my opinion leave it at that if im wrong im wrong but seriously.... no fortune 500 company (investors/CEO's/ANYONE) would be so careless

Can they say the same thing about Android? I am certain there are supporting numbers that account for loss for every device on the market. With so many makes and models of Android available I can imagine that we cost the carriers just as much if not more than the iPhone does. The difference is they aren’t linked to one specific device. Even though the numbers point towards iPhone as the devil, the consumers and the manufacturers are more to blame

Any monthly subscription service is the same way. You get people in the door (so to speak) with a loss leader, and then make all your money on the OTHER things the customer buys.
Even if you paid $500 for your ET, Sprint probably wouldn't make a profit straight out on it. Say it cost them $450 to purchase it from Samsung. It also cost something to get it shipped to the store. They have rent and utilities to pay each month. They have a manager and a salesguy to pay. By the time you shell out your $500, they MIGHT be breaking even.
But then you buy a screen protector for $25 and a carrying case for $30. Those two items probably cost them a combined $10. NOW you've made them a profit on the transaction.

i mean how does wirefly/letstalk.com get their phones and sell them cheap... do they buy from sprint? or from the manufacturer? ( i know they have their own ETF if you cancel in before a certain period) but my god i wouldnt put my business in customers hand who dont even get a REAL credit check done
sprint and tmobile are the easiest carriers to get into with horrible/no credit and not pay a HIGH deposit or NONE at all... i mean seriously lets give someone with poor credit a contractual obligation for 2 years with hope that they dont just bail and leave us with the bill (like they have done already) and cry about our profit margins and increase the prices/change policies on our current customers to make up the difference.... horrible business ethics... and that is coming from a person that dropped out of college.... a CEO cant figure this out?
or the investors who put their money into a ticking time bomb? i give zero ****s to sprint and there profit margins.... for all i care they can merge with big red or go bankrupt making a deal with apple to buy 30-35 million iphones in the next 4 years was a bad move.... and if they couldnt see that from AT&T after how many years of struggling with the iphone... then they are as naive as Lance Ito (the judge for OJ simpsons murder case)

higher termination fees, no multiple purchases of world phones on accounts with spending limits, no more sprint premier... you're right, it ISNT fair to those of us who have been customers for years... ONE of the many reasons i hate apple.

i work at a preferred retailer, and i have no idea what the epic touch cost. i CAN tell you though, that the HTC Evo 4G cost my store $375 per phone, with an MSRP of $449.99. we buy ours from a vendor named Brightpoint. i have no idea what brightpoints investment is on these devices, but i believe they are owned by sprint, so it IS possible that they are taking a hit from the manufacturer to me, hoping i sell them. i REALLY hope we arent WAGERING with my employer's future here...

yes, it really is close to retail. the iPhone 4S 16 GB costs my store $645 from our vendor... the MSRP is $650... either apple or brightpoint are bending us over here. in fact, its so bad, that the managers at my store wont sell iphones out of store inventory to upgrades, only to new lines. our franchise gets more commission from sprint for new lines, thus making it more "worth it". i think this is a TERRIBLE idea, you should never treat new customers better than current ones (or am i just too old fashioned? )

loss leaders make more sense than gambling on the prospect of future business. i think this is probably what is happening. ill give you a hint though. my store's cost for a case and screen protector? >$10
and since sprint REQUIRES we go through a certain accessory vendor, i am led to believe they get kick backs from the vendor (or what would it matter?)
as for the 11 month thing with tmobile, i dont know how sprints works, but i have an idea. when a customer cancels their line from sprint within the first 181 days, our commission is charged back (to the franchise, and then in turn to the salesperson). if its beyond that, franchise gets to keep the commission. if sprint is still losing money at this point, why arent they pulling the commission back? idk, i dont run a bazillion dollar (legit amount) corporation.

Went online to buy the Galaxy SIII as Baltimore is not one of the top 30 markets included in T-mobiles launch of the "new Jesus phone".
I was forced to switch to a classic plan , previously had an even more plan for about the same features and cost but them when I looked at the pricing I see that T-mobile sells the phone for $80 more than Sprint, ATT and Verizon are for both the subsidized price and the full retail price.
What gives? Did I just sign up for a 2 new year contract only to be scammed into dishing out more money to T-mobile?
BTW, the Pebble Blue 32GB version is still backordered online.

By the phone outright. Pay full price, and sign up for a $30 a month plan, bring your own device. This, although contrary to popular opinion, is EASILY the most cost effective route. If you can not pay $650 for a phone outright, then you have a tough choice to make if you want instant gratification.
I just bought mine, and it was $300 after mail in rebate. I am annoyed to, but there is nothing I could do about it.
I'm a little annoyed too and will be watching T-Mobile closely. If they they have some super-Sale of July 4th (which is within the 14 day return policy) I hope they don't put up a fight.
In general, all prices should be good for 30 days on any product, with no-hassle price adjustments.

Well, if you need a data plan however and you're paying for it anyway I think it's better to get the device subsidized.
My last phone was the Galaxy S and I paid $500 with a $30 plan at the time. A year later, I realized I needed more talk time, mobile email I added a data plan as well. Now it doesn't make sense to pay full retail for the phone.
My biggest issue is even the full retail price from T-mobile is $80 more than other carriers. Is that the premium we have to pay for getting the phone from the carrier who had the device on the market before the other? (even though they were the last to make an announcements).
that part still doesn't make sense... 3 other carriers are selling the exact same phone for substantially cheaper. Why are TMo's prices hiked up?

The T-Mob version should be roughly the same as the ATT version. Unless the radio for the 42 MBps data is significantly more costly than whatever radio ATT uses, I don't see where the difference should be.
Even so, if I had $700, I'd be buying one outright today. My Vibrant would become a dev/backup device with no looking back.
Although I want one VERY badly, I am kinda glad that I am going to have to wait a bit more before I can afford it. This way I can monitor the S III topic here and see if there are any lurking issues before I buy.

I would talk to rententions if you want to see if you can get a better deal. Depending on how long you've been with them, how long you've been out of contract, etc, they may be able to get you a better deal. The key is to be nice to them.

I've waited a long time to upgrade and I'm disappointed with the pricing. That's it. I wasn't rude or anything, just laid it out there.
The rep apologized for my disappointment and then she offered the following with no hesitation:
1. $200 credit to offset the cost of the phone. The credit has been applied to my account.
2. She said she could give me 500 more minutes on my plan AND reduce my monthly bill by $15.
3. She said I could pick it up in any store for $279.99 or call back on the 27th when they get them in their system at Customer Care.
4. I had overage on my bill for the first time. $100 worth. She took care of that too!
Bottom line, she gave me the phone for $79.99, saved me money on my monthly bill, AND wiped off overage.
Can't wait to get my S III once it's readily available. I won't mind the wait.

I have a question to ask you, what type of plan are you on and is T-Mobile reducing your plan by $15.00 a month by giving you a $15.00 a month credit for two years, for example? Thanks!
What I think everyone fails to realize is T-Mobile has the best rates out of all carriers and you still end up saving even with the extra your spending on the device. T-Mobile takes that into account when pricing devices. So overall its not really all bad. Just seems like it when your dropping all that money up front.

for those of you who did call retentions, did you do so before or after ordering the phone? I ordered the 32gb pebble blue online, and after taxes and fees and whatnot, it came out to a little under 450... that seems quite high to me fore some reason.

Doesn't sound high for 32gb they start at 379 before taxes, shipping and upgrade/activison fees.

Think they could still waive my activation if I was an angel to them? I'm just a student, lol. 450 stings a bit, but its looking like it'll definitely be worth it.
That's the same amount you would pay at amazon and on the go solutions but you get a bonus when buying from on the go solutions it will come rooted if I was to spend $700 on a phone that would be the choice I would make the international version are way better

for some reason, I was given a 6 months full upgrade without any notification. Would really love to get this but, the price on this is insane. Anyone walking into a target, bestbuy or any local chain will see 4 galaxy s3. who in their right mind would pick the tmobile at 90$ more? Hey guys, me, my mom and dad just switched to t mobile. i Have some money, so i bought the gnote 2 with EIP (we're on the value plan) but my parents came over with their att gs2's.
My dad really wants the gs3 so i'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to do it. If he does the EIP, he'll pay 170ish down, and then 20 dollars a month for two years, so thats 170 +400. but he wouldnt have to put so much down now, it would come out to like 220 with tax.
I could try and get it on craigslist for like 350... I mean technically tmobile would let him add insurance to it as long as its a tmobile phone even if its used, i think. I'm considering this.
My real question is this, Could i buy it on contract, under my name (my actual phone is under my moms family plan) for like 50 dollars in best buy now, and i dont think thats with a rebate, and then cancel the contract and keep the phone? If i add that up, Its 50, plus 50 for the tax i think, 35 for the activation fee if i cant get that waived, and the 200 early termination fee. thats about 3-335. of course i'll have to pay for some service, so, will that be prorated? then it can be as low as 30-40 extra dollars which brings the total to like 370, or even if i have to pay the full month of service, thats like 400... thats much better than 550 plus tax.... even if there is a rebate which i wouldnt get back because ill be cancelling, maybe it would come to 500 total....

One thing. If you sign up for a plan at best buy or anywhere where you are either signing a contract or getting a new account. You can't just cancel and keep the phone. They will not cancel you unless you return the phone. Id you don't they will charge you for the full price plus who knows what else. If your parents can unlock their phones through art and they can be used on tmobiles service is do that and save some money. Or have them sell their att phones to help with the downpayme t of the sgs3. Just some advice.

hmmm but that doiesnt sound right to me...we all just left att and cancelled our contracts and went to tmobile.. and we all bought our phones at best buy, my father in may of last year, and me and my mom in february, and we just had to pay the cancellation fees, are you saying that tmobile is different? I mean, maybe they wont let me cancel untill after the 14 days... or maybe they wont prorate and make me pay for the full month... but youre saying theyll make me pay for the full retail? AND the cancellation fee??

Sorry. I guess I made you confused. I meant if you were to cancel within the 14 days you'd have to return the phone for a full refund. After the 14 days you can cancel and keep whatever phones you got. Now if you were to choose the value plans and get on the eip for 20 months and then cancelled after 14 days, ypud he billed for the remaining payments that are left on your bill. I hope that helps. T-Mobile may have a random sale and you'll be able to get the GS3 for cheap(er).

When I said cancel I meant to sign up for a regular plan, and cancel and pay the early termination fee, not a value plan. But it doesnt seem like itll work anyway... if you cancel, then you need to pay the early termination fee and the full retail of the phone, each months payment towards your plan pays offsome of it so after like 10 months maybe itll be paid off... but I woukdnt be able to just cancel....

On any carrier, if you cancel your contract, you must pay full retail for your phone if not already paid off. Even on regular plans that aren't value plans. If people could do what you want to do, think about it, nobody would ever buy a phone on Craig's list and would buy the phone and sign the contract then immediately cancel. You pay less for a phone on contact because in your monthly payments you are paying off the phone. Yes even on the classic plan. That's why your monthly bills are more then the value pan.
If he wants the s3 then he well either need to pay full retail for it or you could get it on cl. I know in my area they go for 400+

Even if you could "get away with it" - do you think they're going to want to be your friend any more ? T-Mobile can make notes in your account - and they're going to know where that phone went. They could possibly take legal action against you if they really wanted to be spiteful (which, really, would be pretty fair if they found a way), or they could block the IMEI from their network - very simple for them and fraud seems to be the #1 reason they do so.
Sure, it might work out fine and the phone might continue to work - but is that really how you want to treat a company you want to continue to have a business relationship with ?

Id get angry at you but I guess my op wasn't very clear. I'm nit trying to get away with anything. Im not trying to steal a phone. What I was asking is, just like I am legally entitled to sign up for a contract and then cancel it and pay a 200 etf, or to cancel within 14 days and psy an early re stocking fee, would this be allowed as well. Because normally you wouldnt come out on top because on other carriers, the tef is alot more, most of the time expensive phones are alot even when you sign a contract and they msy make you psy for a month of service. I was just asking if they would allow you to keep the phone. You guys are just way to quick to blow up at me. Seriously. I read that, I was just pointing out the wrongness of it. I'm not trying to defend the carriers but this is supposedly why they pull that sorta stuff and it is easy enough to believe when I see posts like this. Anyways no getting around it really, you can probably find a way to cheat the system but you get burned too. Plus don't they block the IMEI?
Maybe I misunderstood the OP, but if he was asking if he could start a contract, wait 14 days, cancel it, pay the ETF, and keep the phone, I don't see the problem. That's exactly the point of the ETF... so long as he pays it he hasn't done anything wrong as far as I can tell?

Yes it will work. You have to wait til the return grace period is over before you cancel the contract. It's 14 or 30 days depends on where you live and where you get the phone from. Avoid getting phones with mail in rebates.
As long as you pay the ETF you are fulfilling your part of the contract
