Need advice - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Two days ago I plug my phone in to charge the phone started to make a buzzing/hizzing sound around the charging port area. I plug the phone out because its smelled like it was burning. I assume its the flex piece for the usb so I ordered one off ebay and shut the phone down only to used for emergencies because I currently have 49%.
Today I decided to use another wire and to my surprise it charges off my old usb wires but not my wifes htc evo lte wire.
I am running the latest saberkernel thats the only software I can think of that would affect the battery since I have no new apps

What's up with these microUSB cables?

I'm about fed up with microUSB. Since I got my Evo a year ago I have gone through five microUSB cables. My last one just stopped charging so I ordered four more..
The one that came with my Evo lasted almost two weeks before the end came loose and charging became spotty (had to be sitting just right or it would disconnect). So I started using the one that came with my Logitec mouse to charge the phone and I ordered three more online. The Logitec one lasted about five days before it became loose. One of the three that I ordered lasted two days, another one lasted about three months, and the third one carried me over until it stopped working a couple of days ago.
What is the deal with these things? It's not like I'm rough with my device, it hardly has a scratch on it. It's just the charging cables keep falling apart.
Ya know, now that I think about it.You are right. It has to be the cables. I, like you have been very good to my phone but have gone thru quite a few cables. 6 to be exact. My only saving grace is www.monoprice.com.

I don't have any problems. I had one car charger come apart but it's because i was off roading and the phone was getting tossed around. I still have my original cable.

That's where I keep ordering mine.. I would think it was their cables that are shotty, except for the fact that my HTC and Logitec cables didn't fare any better.
I've had one Motorola car charger the entire time and it's worked perfectly.
My phone charges on like any micro usb cable... Though they all have to be slightly tilted downwards. I had to solder and hot glue a new microusb port since my old one fell off completely.
They all remain pretty tight in there, using blackberry ones I got on amazon for $1.30
I have not had any problems with my microUSB cable
Between me and my wife, both of our HTC cables have gone bad, so we started using the ones for our old phones (palm and dare), both of those went bad. We now use the one for our Xoom, and the one for my old blackberry. It has to be something with our phones messing them up cause I have never had an issue with micro-usb until I got the EVO a year ago.
Stock cable with no issues here. Perhaps it's how you insert/ remove? Just like with the ladies... nice and gentle.

Stock cable here for 6 months no issues.

I had the same issue. If I didn't keep my HTC cable in juuust the right spot it wouldn't charge. Well a few cables later and a desperate trip to radioshack after work one day I got the slightly expensive gigaware cable.
I feel like I have been rougher on this than most and it has heldup great. I would recommend giving it a try.

I still use my stock HTC cable (just for charging my phone overnight.) I've never had any problems with it. I use it along with 3 other 6 foot cables that I keep in various places when I need them.
Thought it was just me.... on my fourth cable. Am gentle with my baby - never dropped or talked to it meanly (even when the b*tch threw a tantrum) but still can't keep a.cord working for more than 3 months .

Haha, I have 3 micro usb cables and all of them charge my phone, but do not pop up as a drive on any computer. I have to hold it a certain way and not move for it to finally come up on my computers, once I move though it's over. I'm not sure if that's a cable issue or it could be the pins of my phone that are messed up. I take real good care of my phone, haven't dropped it, charge it and don't mess with the cord while it's charging at all besides removing it gently and putting the charger on gently. I dunno, for now I'm using a card reader to transfer my media and things.

Duly noted. I work in electronics retail, so I get the higher end cables fairly cheap, and had a ton laying around from my old BlackBerry Bold, so I have never used the stock cable, but I will be sure to switch the girlfriends over.

Glad it's not just me.
Couldn't help but chuckle at this thread. Ive gone through at least 5 cables in less than a year. They only last a couple of months before they get loose and stop charging. I just make sure to keep spares laying around.
I feel your pain ! Ive gone through 6-9 Cables. I have chargers everywhere and have to improvise with different positions every time. Its sucks ass. Ive noticed the MicroUSB jack is kinda chipped on the left bottom corner.
Real Question : Why is the HTC cable the only cable that lets me transfer data ? The others just charge the cellphone.
I've gone thru several myself. It drives me crazy.

[Q] GNex charge cable failure

Hey guys, I have a question regarding your Samsun GNex charging cable. I woke up this morning after plugging my phone in last night to find that it was at 20% battery and the cable was not being recognized. After I jiggle the charger, the phone occasionally and fleetingly recognizes the cable but quickly loses the contact. When I tried to charge the phone with a different cable (my Kindle Fire charger), it worked without any issue.
Has anyone experienced similar failures of their cable in this manner? It worked the night before without any issue but now it is giving me problems. The cable is not visibly damaged, and I am careful with my devices/accessories so I do not believe that the problem is from my carelessness.
Finally, I got this phone from the Verizon store, would I take the cable to them or to Samsung to get it replaced? I hesitate to go to VZW because I don't want them to see that my phone is rooted (in case they ask to plug it in in front of them).
Thanks!
Yes I have the same problem I don't know if its just that they (Samsung) shipped out the wrong charger cables or what but I Use my Brothers cord for his Droid 3 and it works flawlessly snug and all..

Yeah, it worked fine until today, so I don't know if it was because they sent the wrong cord. Oh well, I will get in touch with Samsung about it.
*******Update******************************
My original cable has not suddenly started working again. it now charges and transfers files which is good because my Chinese knockoff cable had a loose fit on my phone.

Same problem here. I bought my phone around Dec 21st and just 2 weeks ago the original cable refuses to charge the phone. It also didn't allow me to transfer files to my phone. I currently have 2 new cables. One cable is from www.monoprice.com and one is from www.cellphoneshop.net (China). Both of the "backup" cables work fine as well as one of them being 8 feet long. (makes it that much easier to plug in at the library sometimes.)
FYI - my original Droid Eris cable crapped out after about 4 months so it does not surprise me. What I would like is a good backup wallwart to use at my office. The phone charges so much faster with the ac adapter.
Solid USB cables are cheap (also recommend monoprice.com) so its not a huge deal, but wish they'd last longer.
Mine's still going strong at this point.
I'm still using my Blackberry cable.
I love monoprice, why spend 150 on HDMI when you can get it for 5. I got in touch with Samsung and after some discussion they had me send my old one in (they paid for shipping) and they will send a new one. I was a bit annoyed that I had to send the old one since it was a hassle, but oh well.

[Q] Soo I learned this about my car charger.........

I drive a 08 F-150 and I put my phone in my cupholder and it bends my charger putting the weight of the phone on it and recently it started to bend the contact port that receives electricity and I would connect my phone but it would say connected but would drain my battery so I have to bend charger cables to charge my phone( ive tried many) and one day I put my phone connected to my car charger and it was powered off and than I looked and my phone was in download mode and something got downloaded I then rebooted my phone and my triangle was gone!!!!!!! Is it possible my charger turned into a usb jig? And anybody have an ideas on maybe moving the contact to its original position? Also when plugged intoi a computer itll charge but needs to bent up on the port of my phone to be usb recognized.
Or a car charger that bends around the phone? like at a 90 angle?

sounds like out of no where it turned into a jig by being at a 90• angle. im not sure but it may sound like that. just charge it with the headphone side down, charger port up!

Its possible, but not probable. It would be a combination of only certain pins transferring current, and the resistance only being like 300k ohms. Totally possible over time i suppose with a faulty connection.

I've been using a simple $6.00 vent mounted holder from Walmart ever since my HTC Mogul days. It sure beats breaking your charging port.
This is why I hate having the charger port on the BOTTOM of the phone... Its stupid design because that's the part of the phone that is going to be bumping up against something most of the time. It really should be next to the headphone jack.
I purchased a right-angle USB cable about a month after I got my phone, and I love it. I can actually set my phone in a cup holder in the car with it charging and NOT feel like I'm going to break the USB port.

[Q] Standard Car charger vs USB car charger

I recently sold my old Toyota Rav4 which only had a standard cigarette lighter car charger. I used a cheap charger I've had since my old Blackberry Tour to charge my ET4G. I work on the road a lot and used the car charger a lot for about the last 10 months til my phone started dying on me. Sprint store tested the phone and said the battery was slightly swollen and definitely showed signs of being damaged which in turn damaged the terminals on the phone causing constant reboots. I paid $35 to have Sprint/Samsung replace the phone as it was less than a yr old and under warranty.
I now have a new car and new ET4G. New car has USB port under the radio as well as 2 standard car charging ports. I've done several searches and read several threads about different voltages and which ones actually charge phones and tablets etc but none have answered my question. The question is is USB charging any safer than standard car charger? I've been told by a friend that fluctuations in the cars battery can send different amounts of charge to the phone and damage it over time. Both methods charge my phone so I don't care which one I use though I'd rather use USB as my USB cord is just 1.5 feet long (perfect length to reach my phone mount).
For some reason they actually gave me a new ET4G not a refurb and it works great. I don't want to damage the battery on this one and would like to keep it alive and sell it when I upgrade phones around December. That's only a few months away but I'd like to know I'm not damaging the battery in the mean time. Any input would be great. Thanks in advance and sorry for the lengthy write up.
Anyone with any input? Anyone use USB to micro USB in their cars?
Don't know if the new car is also a Toyota but here goes...
04 and 10 Toyotas - tried a cheapo MicroUSB charger and the voltage actually drained the battery! So I bought a $10 lighter to USB port charger, plugged in the cable and charges like a champ!
It really depends on how much power they're pushing through the USB port and whether the E4GT can regulate it. I'm finding it to work great - and MTP mode should give you access to the music on the head unit. (Again, *if* it's a newer Toyota...)
Most radios and internal usb ports will be 500ma (same as a standard computer usb port). That is only enough to charge the phone when it is sleeping. Just snag a $10 adapter that puts out 1a.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Thank you both. I just drove 2 hours with Bluetooth on and GPS running while connected to USB. Battery drained 8% which isn't much so it wasn't strong enough to charge it but slowed down drain.
The new car is a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT (It's a new model to Hyundai). The cigarette charger doesn't seem to over heat the phone like my Toyota did. I'll ask Hyundai how much charge the cigarette lighter port puts out I guess.

I highly recommend the OEM Motorola car charger. Got mine on Amazon for $6. It was the only charger that would work on my old phone because it had voltage control. Any generic charger would only drain my battery while still displaying the charging animation.
Plus it has a cool blue glow to it.

Sweet, I'll take a look at it. I heard back from Hyundai and the guy said he has no documentation on it yet since its a new model but if I wanted to swing by he could test it real quick and let me know. Today was hot as hell. I got in the car and blasted the AC. Put the phone on the USB charger and after about 10 minutes I got a warning on my screen saying phone is too hot and charging has stopped. I didn't even have GPS on or anything. I quickly unplugged the phone and it was fine after that. How can the USB overheat the phone when it can't even charge it while I run GPS and Bluetooth? I wasn't too happy. I used a brand new USB to micro USB cord from Monoprice (5 pin if that makes a difference).

Charging slow???

Out of the blue I noticed my S3 was charging very slowly, it even was losing a charge while it was plugged in while I was using it. I figure it had something to do with my custom ROM so I reflash, still same outcome. The battery was still holding a good charge, so I figured it was something else. I then went out and bought a new charger, which came with a micro usb cord to see if that helped. Plugged in the new charger while using my old micro usb cord, still same outcome. Then used the new micro usb cord and old charger, charging went back to normal, problem solved! I would of never thought that the cord would malfunction from day to day use after such a short lifespan. Moral of the story, check your cords if you experience the same problem, it could save you some time and money!
Cables do go bad. Also, check for gunk in either end of the cable or even the phone's socket. I've seen all kinds of odd problems caused by lint and gunk in cables or plugs.
Same problem here waiting for my new cables to come to see if that's it

True story; My wife has an S3. Over the Memorial Day weekend my wife had charged her phone with a EVO charger overnight. Next morning as we were leaving for the beach her phone was DEAD. I TOLD HER TO PUT IT ON THE CAR CHARGER, NOTHING. I asked if the phone was plugged in anyway long story short phone would not charge until I took the battery out and used the factory charger two hours all was well. Careful what you use to charge your handset.
I was having this problem, but the battery is over a year old and I live in a hot part of the world. Swapped the battery for a new one and everythings back to new. Fast chargimg and 9 hours of use. So glad I didn't go ti an HTC with a sealed battery compartment.

I would replace the battery and charger.
I've got the same problem. But my phone sits in a hot work truck most of the day. I suspect the battery is worn out now. I've tried new cables.
You could always try a new oem battery, they're pretty cheap on eBay. Make sure you get an oem though and stay away from the cheap knock offs.
