[Q] How to get Froyo: T-Mobile unlocked now on o2

My desire was purchased on T-Mobile (has T-Mobile startup screen), I also bought an unlock code from them. I'm now using my o2 contract sim in the phone. I'm interested in updating the software to FROYO but have no idea how to go about it.
I don't want to do anything complicated and am happy to wait for an official release. I've read the network sends an update direct to your phone. In my case would this come from T-Mobile or o2?
When I check for system updates it says none are available. My software number is 1.15.110.11
I've looked around the forum for ages but I still can't get a definite answer to my question.

You can be waiting for a very long time for froyo from a network provider.
It's easy to debrand and upgrade your phone. Create a goldcard & download an official ROM. Then you can simply upgrade OTA. There's loads of guides on this forum.

Understand your situation, since I had almost exactly the same circumstances (mine is running on orange)! I couldnt get a definite answer either, so bit the bullet anyway and did it, here is how:
1-rooted the phone by UnrEVOked method (really couldnt be bothered by the goldcard etc method; this method was easy, just had some driver install problems since the guide isnt too good on this point, but its easy to figure it out)
2-Installed the new radio
3-installed the generic rooted 2.2 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775, just by doing an easy straighforward update from the sdcard by going to the bootloader.
Phone was still UNLOCKED,and all running ok. Just had an issue where the phone would say "sim card changed, do you want ot load settings etc". Say NO, otherwise you lose your wallpapers, scenes, etc settings, and you have to redo the whole shebang.
Hope your experience is same as mine, im a noob too, so dont take anything for granted (your phone may have different firmware from mine etc), and make doubly sure before you go ahead!

I'm in exact the same situation (German T-mobile 2.1 Softnumber: 1.15.110.11). Your guide looks awesome!!! Can you please please please write it in a bit detail?? from a factory branded 2.1 to root, then to froyo?? please??
I read the UnrEVOked guide from rootmydroid.co.uk
but looks like I only need to the first half for your step 1?
does it root the phone ? does it wipe all my settings and apps???
I also don't know what to do with the radio in your step 2??
can you please help??!! THX soooooooooo much !!!!

Does rooting the phone invalidate the warranty?? That's what's putting me off doing it and why I'm happy to wait for an official update.

The step 2 of unrevoked guide is installing the ROM of your choice. Just pick the new ROM you want (from many here and other forums, I just picked a rooted generic 2.2), and install as per part 2 of the unrevoked guide.
2.2 requires a new radio, which is linked and shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775. Installing the radio doesnt wipe the data, but you seem to need to WIPE (from the recovery image) before putting the new ROM. So use TItanium Backup, or MYbackup, to save your apps, and user data on the SD card, then when the new ROM is installed, you reinstall one of those apps (from market) then rewrtie your apps/data!
As per warranty, check the other threads to be sure, but i think, yes it does invalidate your warranty, but im not 100% certain!

[Q] HTC Evo 4g on MetroPCS, Few Questions and help

Tomorrow I am planning on flashing my HTC Evo to MetroPCS.
I have a few questions, as this is my first android phone.
1. What exactly is happening when I "flash" the Evo to MetroPCS?
2. My Evo is running 2.2 right now, when "flashed" to MetroPCS would I be able to update from 2.2 to 2.3 (Gingerbread) later?
3. What exactly are roms and rooting? When I have my phone flashed is someone "rooting" my phone?

P.S. I do understand when I flash my phone to Metro I will lose 3g and 4g functionality.

1. When you "flash" your phone, it refers to replacing the ROM on your phone. The ROM on your phone is basically a copy of your phone's OS (in this case, Android). Don't be too confused over the ROM part, as even though ROM stands for "Read Only Memory," you can still make changes to it (weird eh?)
2. That will depend on if someone actually makes a MetroPCS 2.3 update. The thing with flashing is that you can put on any ROM you want, by just overwriting the old one. It just requires someone to make the ROM. Most developers package updates for their ROMs so you can sometimes just put on the newer ROM, flash that and be up and running quickly.
3. As I mentioned before, ROMs are basically a copy of your phone's OS that someone might have customized. (Feel free to correct me guys,) In the Android OS way, you flash your ROM onto your phone. An unmodified copy is maintained on the phone, while another copy is made where your phone actually modifies it and changes it as you use the phone and store data. If something goes bad, no problem. Phone takes a copy of the unmodified ROM and copies that over the "put OS to be used here" chunk of your memory.
TL;DR? ROMs are the software on your phone, but can be modified.
3a. Rooting is different then flashing though, although it's commonly associated with each other. Rooting is when you modify your Android OS so you can have write access to other parts of the OS. All those apps that were stuck on your phone and you never liked? With rooting, you can pull those right out. Rooting allows you to pretty much do more things with your phone that you couldn't do before. It doesn't sound like too much, having write access to everything. But there are plenty of things you can do to your phone with write access. One of those things actually is flashing other ROMs to your phone. You actually need to root your phone as it is, so you can install what's called a custom recovery and a developer bootloader. Anyways, I'm not going to go through too much. Just check out the Evo Development area and there will be plenty to read through.

Although one more question, when I have my phone "flashed" to install another ROM; do I require root access?
P.S. Rooting sounds like a great idea, I wanted to get rid of all those useless sprint apps.
EDIT: Just realized you did answer my question in 3a, so when someone is flashing my phone to MetroPCS tomorrow that means someone is rooting my phone and installing a ROM that is compatible with MetroPCS? Is my phone more than likely going to remain rooted?

Afterwards, you can flash whatever you want on it. I remember it used to be a problem too, for people wanting to switch to MetroPCS. Developers had the software and everything, but the only way to activate it is to convince a service rep to add your ESN into the MetroPCS device database. Now that it's official, it's much easier.
I'm mentioning all of this because if they are officially flashing Evos now, I would think they would have a special in-house ROM that has already been tested and vetted. The issue here is that it's probably a locked (non-rooted) ROM. From the point of view of a service carrier, distributing rooted ROMs might cause higher complaints from users who screw up or from reliability issues. Anyways, good luck getting it flash. Let me know how it goes...

I'd imagine that to activate a phone with MetroPCS they'd need your ESN, I'll be asking the REP tomorrow. Chances are they are not using an In-House rom, because simply flashing the phone through Houdini gives the phone Talk and Text. But for a little more money under the table they add everything else, not that I can't do it myself. But I'd prefer someone who's done it before do it before I do. Either way I'll be asking quite a bit of questions tomorrow to the REP and I will let you know how it goes.

I have to give a little clarity here.
1.) "Flashing" your phone is not replacing a rom. Or anything to do with a rom. Flashing your phone is changing the service your phone uses to make phone calls. e.g. Flashing to metro. When you flash your phone you are essentially telling your phone to use MetroPCS's towers instead of sprints.
2.) If you flash your phone you DO lose the data functionality. BUT there is a solution. If you take your flashed evo to the right person they can unlock the data on the phone and it will work just like it would on Sprint. (craigslist is full of ppl who can do it for a price.)
3.) "Rooting". Rooting your phone makes you the "SuperUser". Basically its like "Jailbreaking" if you know what that means. Either way it makes you like an administrator for your phone. Rooting gives you full control over the phones inner workings. Therefore you can install what we call "ROMS". On the flip side this means you can easily BRICK your phone if your not careful. Rooting is only for those who know what they are doing. So do your homework before attempting.
4.) As far as if the phone can receive updates like Gingerbread after you flash it? I don't know. I would like to find out myself. The question is hard to call for me because you still have access to the android marketplace after you flash it. But you are not on Sprints network any longer. So hopefully someone here can answer that for us both.

I am very new with Android phones and I have some questions if someone can answer me please.
I have done hard reset my Galaxy S3 couple days ago and I was trying to run "Video Hub".
"Video Hub" was giving me an error message that is "Device authorisation is failed"
Honestly, I do not mind that this app does not work but it really challenge me that the "Hard Reset" does not really clear all the information on my phone.
Here is my question.
1. Is there a way to re-format or re-install android OS on my phone? (something like returning to the beginnig of my phone when I bought it)
2. I have two ROMs (one is the Bell Jelly Bean ORIGINAL rom and Bell Jelly Bean ROOTED rom), using these ROM, can I re-install android OS without voiding warranty?
3. if my phone get "Bricked", using the Bell Jelly Bean ORIGINAL rom, can I unbrick my phone? (I saw some post that I need CWM? do I need to get additional file to download?)
Could please someone explain me? I am ready to learn new things but I need some basic knowledge. please help me...

If you have flash costom binary or rooted use triangle away to reset it .warrenty will not be void

Come on man this is simple. you shouldn't be flashing if you don't have a failsafe anyways. Look up the correct image/country/carrier for your phone and that is your backup. If you can get to Odin you can always get back to square zero

Hi, I need help please, here is question:
I bught my i747m a week ago, im from mexico and Telcel is the local carrier, Can something go wrong if a Install any official stock rom from another country?

I am using a Bell Galaxy S3 SGH i747M with baseband MVLUFNH2 looking to unlock this phone. I am currently under the impression I have to revert to jellybean to do this. Is this correct and if not can someone please point me in a definitive direction?

Once the phone is on 4.3 or newer bootloader, the only way to unlock the phone would be to purchase an unlock code.
I know that the regionlockaway app can be used for Bell/Rogers/Telus s4 but I haven't seen any method for the s3.

Ok Your post is confusing me in that it sounds like the second sentence hints that the regionlockapp can unlock a bell/rogers/telus phones for free even if on 4.3 for S4?

For the s4 from Bell/Telus/Rogers (sgh-i337m), you need to downgrade to stock 4.4.2, flash the stock 4.2.2 modem, root, run regionlockaway app, reflash stock 4.4.2 or 5.01 ROM. The s4 should now be permanently sim unlocked.
With the s3, certain modem/bootloader combinations can brick the phone so I don't know if regionlockaway will work on the s3 sgh-i747m.

God this is a nightmare i figured such an old phone would be easy to root and unlock and every damn lead I follow leads to a dead end.

I searched high and low for a free unlock method. I finally gave up because I did not want to take a chance and brick my phone by trying to downgrade the modem, rooting, and installing regionlockaway. Unlock code was $15.

I'm not too great with this stuff anymore but why can't a good coder edit the files within and unlock it simply by flashing the edited file? In the end its all code right?

I'm on 4.4.2 running an old cyanogen nightly. I purchased an unlock code and when I type it in it says Network Unlock Request Unsuccessful. Any Ideas?

You need to be running a stock dialler in order to enter the unlock code which means you need to flash back to stock or flash a custom rom built from a stock rom.

I did manage to sim-unlock an I747M with 4.3 version of Android (build JSS15J.I747MVLUEMK5) -- or, at least, it doesn't show the "enter network unlock code" anymore... via ServiceMenu, perso SHA off, and NV rebuild/restore; procedure is described elsewhere on the forum. No such luck with 4.4.2 (tried downgrading -- no go)
Now -- an assumption: since there are various remote USB unlocking services on-line, claiming success remotely unlocking the I747M with 4.4.2, someone -- and likely more than one -- here on XDA knows how this is done. I've been trying to piece together the procedure for it, going through pages and pages of discussions, not finding much.
I'd like to appeal to those who know -- please share the knowledge, or at least point in the right direction those of us who want the DIY solution...

You sim unlocked the i747m that was running stock 4.3 using a hidden menu? That would be great news. Did you try inserting a sim card from another carrier and connect to their network?

I tried inserting a few non-registered/old SIMs from a variety of carriers (incl. european); the phone did not produce "Network lock code" prompt, and just reported "unregistered SIM", just like a _known_ (i.e., tested in the field) SIM-unlocked phone I have.

If you are able to get a sim to try connecting to a network, other than the original carrier, let us know. Thanks.

Hey guys, sorry for posting this, but im desperate and have read until my eyes are falling out of my skull. I am willing to work with any dev if they need specific work/software ran/info to make this happen. Is there, or is there not clear concise directions on rooting SGH-T889v (wind mobile variant of note 2)?
remember we use AWS for our signal, the modem stuff is all different. this is were my expertise kinda falls short. BUT I AM WILLING TO HELP TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. As far as iv'e seen there are no current methods of rooting this phone which is a damn shame considering its horsepower. i saw the all in one toolkit for note 2's, and i simply cannot afford to donate to unlock the functionality of the update that supports wind. So only ONE guy knows how? I believe dev's should get paid and should accept donations, they are the real workers and smart guys. I don't work for free either, However this kinda defeats the purpose of the ecosystem we fought so hard to have.... open and accessible platforms were we the users are in control. By with holding the method, its no longer donating, it's close sourcing ala apple,microsoft, etc. Zero offence to that guy, id just really love to "own" MY phone. Can someone PLEASE help? pass the word? anything? a peep?

If you don't mind the flash counter, you could simply use an Odin flashable (N7100) CWM tar, push the superuser zip of your choosing to /data/media/ (linked to /sdcard/) and install that from CWM.

What I know is that the rooting part is all fine and dandy, sure its a little harder than the rest, but its okay, it not too hard. The problem I keep reading is that the ROMS aren't truly compatible with the device, as data become atrociously slow. A method one, respected fellow, recommended we take was to flash a modem that is "for" our device variant. I say that because people reported bootloops due to it. Also there's a greater chance for our device to lose its IMEI number...not sure if these problems have been resolved. But yeah your problem really isn't rooting its the whole deal afterwards, again I am going by what I've read, I myself do not wish to take the chance of it becoming unusable, so i stay far until I got time to research more and some brilliant helpful mind comes along and solves all problems.

i think thats the issue, we just generally need someone more brilliant xD as per the "gentleman" that again, suggested using the donating kit, please re-read my post. whats this business about a flash counter????

I used the toolkit to root my N2 (Videotron T889v) without any problems. Just used the T-Mobile option since they are the same phone, just different software. The only difference is the modem from what I've read. Rooting does not change the modem that you currently have right now. If you decide you want to install a custom rom, then you may have to flash your modem back. I am currently using Jedi X rom without any problems and I can honestly say that it's faster than stock. He also provides a link with our modem so we can flash it after the install. All the T-Mobile software has been taken out, so you won't have to deal with any of it. There are 2 Jedi Roms available. Jedi X has the multi-window function working but no wifi calling. I believe the other is called Jedi Master and that one has wifi calling but no multi-window. I'm not sure if the wifi calling is a T-Mobile thing but I never installed that rom and can't really give much more info on it. In the end, you can always go back to stock if you're not satisfied. You can find a copy of your stock rom at sammobile. I would suggest making sure it's still available before doing anything.
As for the OP, this is my first time dealing with a flash counter although not my first time rooting. The flash counter is some type of software that Samsung puts in their phones to be able to tell if you have "tampered" with the phone's software. From what I've noticed, when you put your phone in the "download" state and install anything, that triggers the counter to rise. If you send your phone to Samsung for service and the counter is not 0, they will deny service since you would have broken your warranty. There is a program called Triangle Away that will return your counter back to 0, should you need to return the phone to Samsung. Although in my case it would only take it back down to 1 using their instructions. I finally got it back to 0 by adding an extra step. From what I've read, I think it depends on the kernel that you're using. Here is the link for the program.

I'm not an expert on any of this, just trying to help. I can say that I've rooted, unrooted and reset my flash counter back to 0 along with my stock Videotron rom.

so you flashed the modem that ptmr3 provided for the t889v along with his jedi x rom and all good is good? no signal issues ? you get hspa+?

I'm on Wind Mobile T889v Note 2. And I cant wait for this phone to get rooted so that I can run debian or whatever have you full blow linux desktop experience on my phone.
The current limited version of android on its own is too limiting for the processing beast that this phone is.

That is correct. Never had any issues whatsoever. Always get full signal strength, no disconnections and overall great service. As long as you flash after the rom, you will get your modem back. To be honest, the rom itself has never changed my modem, I always just flash it in case it's just reporting it as an error. In the directions it states that it will change it but I always check it and it has remained the same every time.

you mean by letting bootup and set up first then go back to twrp or cwm? and then flash the modem...my exams are done hoping to do it by tomorrow.

After you flash the rom (if you're flashing Jedi) you need to let it sit for 10 minutes on the first boot up (after the android logo, just use the reboot option after the 10 minutes). Once you've booted up and finished your setup, just go back into cwm or twrp and flash the modem.

how did you reset the flash counter with triangle away? it doesnt seem to work on my 889V

Hi Everyone!
I have an Xperia Arc that I got through Rogers. It had been running Gingerbread 2.3.4 and the ICS update didn't arrive until a year after I got my phone. I read that it wasn't really recommended to do the ICS upgrade even though it had become available (according to Sony). I had been waiting for SO long to check it out that I took my chances on the 50/50 good bad reviews on it and went ahead with the ICS update when Sony/Rogers released it.
BIG MISTAKE.
At first I didn't think it was that bad - but now after having it for a few months- I HATE IT. My phone runs like S***. It's slow laggy.
I had been wanting to root my phone for a long time (I want to get rid of all the bloatware software and be able to use firewalls and tweak CPU speed).
I was all ready to root and use a custom ICS ROM - but I thought about it and I would rather have GIngerbread back on my phone. My phone was awesome when it had Gingerbread and all I ever want to do now is smash my phone - it just can't run ICS properly.
So here is what I want to do:
1. Root phone - I have already downloaded FLASHTOOL, and the DOOMLORD V4 Rooting tool.
2. Flash phone and get RID OF ICS
3. Install a custom ROM
I just need a bit of help.
I need clarification regarding the ADB Drivers.... I have read in numerous places that by just having the up to date Sony PC Companion that you will have the ADB Drivers needed - and I already have the most up to date Sony PC Companion.
I also need some tips regarding ROMS and KERNELS. I understand they are different and they have to be compatible but when I was originally getting all my files for ICS all I found was a kind of 'all in one' - maybe I was confused - and this is why I need some clarification. Do I need to have a separate ROM and KERNEL otherwise then what do I do?

Thank you for your quick reply. I had actually already read it. I DID read it again though... I picked up a bit more knowledge from the 2nd read but it still didn't clear up a few things.
I'm still not clear on the ADB drivers, I saw all the tutorials about ADB for noobs etc but I'm reading on a LOT of places that just having Sony PC Companion installed and up to date will have the ADB drivers...
I should also let everyone one know that my phone is a ROGERS phone, so my bootloader is LOCKED. I have figured out that there are some ROMS that will work on a LOCKED (carrier (rogers) bootloader.
I currently have Android 4.0.4 (I did the update when it came avail to me and I regret it - i really need gingerbread back) I would also like a rom that doesn't have all the Rogers 'bloatware".
All I want to do is undo the stupid ICS update I did and get rid of that HORRID Rogers bloatware!
Through all my reading over the last while I've learned of 'omnius' - I guess it will unlock my bootloader, root, flash and do lots for my phone. Anyone else recommend this for my situation?

Flash a stock GB ftf and go from there, which will debrand your Phone in the process.
