It seems that my power button has died on my Galaxy Nexus, which is a huge pain in the strategical locations. While I know how to turn the phone off should it shut down, I have no idea how to handle anything else. I have my friends CALL ME to be able to unlock the phone and use it.
There are some apps on Android Market that specifically state that they fix power buttons, but none of them work with the latest versions of Android according to the reviews (if there's any I've missed, let me know).
I know that the phone can be turned off using a charger, since plugging it in or out makes the screen turn on. But are there other ways to turn on the screen, since it's a phone and I'm mobile most of the time?
Is there another way to remap the keys on Android? Note that I cannot root my phone, so options like that are not good either.
Is there a way to remotely turn on Android phone with a tablet through some app? Since I'm carrying my Nexus 7 with me and it uses my phones internet connection to stay online. I tried to find an app that does this, but could not find any.
Any help is much appreciated! I do not wish to buy Nexus 4 at the moment because it isn't much of an improvement and sending it back to UK for warranty seems like a huge mess that I would rather avoid for now.
Thanks!

First, try pgm (slide 2 wake).
Secondly, why can't you root the device? Once you have your screen on, you can turn on USB debugging, and use to it reboot to recovery or fastboot.
Third, there's some experience from users that fixed their own device's power button.

Buy a new power button and put it in.

I had a similar problem with my Samsung Captivate a long time ago. I used WidgetLocker and enabled volume wake function. It uses volume buttons to wake the screen. I'm not sure if this feature is still available, but it's worth a try. If it is not, you can ask for a refund. There are also several apps/widgets to put the phone to sleep. I used this combo for a few months before I got a new phone. Hope this helps :fingers-crossed:
I still haven't found a solution and these apps that say they are a solution, do not work on latest versions of Android. Any other options?

download intellicover app from play store. does not require root
i think pgm is the solution, but you have to root the phone
I've managed to fix my power button recently, its a hardware problem. Do this only if you dont have warranty and are comfortable with opening up your Nexus.
Go to iFixit website and follow instructions to dissassemble the Nexus, its quite easy, a few screws and flat cable disconnects. Next, you need to remove your power button flex cable from the motherboard, do this by lifting the cable connector on the motherboard up and pulling it gently out.
Next thing is a bit tricky and you need to have pretty good sight and precision.
On the flex cable the button consists of 2 pieces, the flex cable and the button itself, which is like a black sticker sticked on the flex cable.
I've removed the sticker and the button that is glued to it with a scalpel (careful!!) and I've found actually rust and dirt on contacts (dunno how rust got there, i have expected dirt only), and then with my scalpel I've carefully scratched the dirt and rust of both parts of the button and its contacts on the flex cable. After that I've put the black sticker back on the flex as it was before (if it wont glue tape it with a small piece of tape) and return everything where it was and assemble Nexus back togeather. And voila! It works!
Keep in mind that I didn't have warranty so it was either open up and try to repair or toss a $200 device. Also, I'm not responsible for any damage that you do to your phone, this is just a brief description of my power button fix. Hope there will be more successful repairs :fingers-crossed:
I had to use volume_wake, while waiting for replacement power button. But this feature does not present on stock roms.
I believe i've read about remapping the hardware buttons; if you're interested, search google. I personally prefer and use smart screen on. I just wave over the proximity sensor and the screen turns on.
Try procedure described here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/700265-power-button-not-working.html#post5797688.
I was very skeptical, but it indeed worked on my phone. Power button started to act normally again! I was amazed!

This would be the easiest thing to do if you're already rooted

Glad to be of help :good:
Solved the same problem with dj_chapz suggestion posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41282390&postcount=8
After I split in half the button I found oxidized contacts with green and black scurf. Cleaned it with little amount of ethyl - works perfectly!

I just did this repair and I have large clumbsy fingers. thank you! I just had to remove corrosion between the button contacts and around. i dabbed nail polish remover (i'm not sure if that is a bad idea or not, but it got my phone working!) and did a little bit of scraping. on my sch-i515 there was a some clear plastic folded over the back sticker part that i had to get up, then i was able to get the black part up without having to fully remove it.
Ok, so I got stuck in the dreaded stuck power boot loop. After mashing the button for a bazillion times, blowing on it, spraying it, hitting it with various objects, it worked! And so far it has been working. But I don't want anything like that to happen again, where it will just shut off on its own due to its own crappieness.
Can you disable the power button, so that the only way to turn off the phone is by using power tools or some other widget?
I want nothing to ever happen when I press it, or when it decides to magically make contact with the inside of my phone.
I can't get inside the phone to deattach the connectors, because here is me -----> (O.O) here is my screwdriver ------> [=====+ and here is the screwdriver tip when I tried to open the phone ------> *snap*
So I now have a screwdriver tip stuck in one of the screws, and I am locked out of its innards, which may be a good thing
Any way to modify the code to disable the power button?
Please help! My phone went bananas again and after shaking it around I got it working again. This is an urgent matter, I can't use my phone like this.
It sounds like you tried most of the stuff in this thread already:

If nothing there works you may have to send it off for repair.
Ach! Do I have to unroot PA and reset the flash counter if I give it to T-Mobile? My phone is a refurb, it's replacing a broken, really old HTC that no one makes anymore. What a hassle! All for one tiny defect with HUGE consequences! I am still under warranty. I don't know of any good local phone repair shops here in Hawaii, may have to mail it in.
FML, today's my birthday, and I may have to pay for another phone.

Well, at least you are still under warranty. I am not sure what happens when you send it to T-Mobile. Hopefully someone with experience with that can chime in.
Good luck and happy birthday.

Heh, been eyeing the nexus 4, even with its flimsy back. I can always get a case.
Yeah, hopefully it doesn't decide to go bonkers on me again. So far it has not been turning itself off and on or getting itself stuck down, but you never know...I'll see what my options are from here on out.

I can tell u from a friend that works for tmobile service department that when u send it back for repair they most likely won't even turn it on, especially with your issue all they'll do is their it in the refurb pile and send ua new "refurbished" phone so no it won't matter if u leave it rooted, your going to get a different phone back anyway unless u personally bring it to a 3rd party repair place

The power button's function is hardware based. No way to disable via software.
I broke the screen on my Note 3. I am considering replacing the screen/digitizer myself, however I am afraid there could be other hardware damage. I don't want to gamble on the screen being the only thing broken working, I'm thinking it might be better to take it into a shop and ask them to fix whatever is broken. Maybe I could replace the screen and then do that, I don't know... I'm sure there have been a million threads about poor saps breaking their phones and looking for solutions, sorry.
Anyway, is there any software available that would let me hook the phone up to my computer and run some general hardware diagnostics? I know the vibration, LEDs, and physical buttons work. I can't think of any way to test the other hardware though. The phone is rooted if it makes any difference.
I'm also just considering selling the thing on ebay and purchasing a new one, with insurance this time.
Give this a try... https://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
sent from my ??????? note 3?
Also you could mirror the screen, but in both cases the same problem comes up: how to install the program or change settings in menu without seeing the screen, assuming the touch pad works. Now, do you remember if there was a beep or some type of sound when opening programs before the damage? I think it's a factory setting, but I'm not sure. I would start the phone and see if there is any sound feedback when pressing screen, taking out the pen and walking away etc, anything to confirm the phone is actually booting up and responding. How about hooking up USB to computer and see if you can access it's internal storage?
I think T-mobile can run the sort of diagnostic you're looking for. My first Note 3 had a defective power button. When I brought it in for replacement, they took it into the back and hooked it up to some sort of diagnostic system to confirm the problem. Dunno if it will work without a screen, but when at another store, I watched them hook up and diag an iPhone with what I presume was the same system. They seemed to be working via the PC, not the phone, so it might work for you. Can't hurt to drop in and ask.

Thanks for the replies.
I think I'll use the screencast to test as much as possible. Not sure if T-mobile would do that for me, considering I don't have their insurance plan and they wouldn't be replacing it. Not a bad idea though.
Ended up purchasing a new screen/digitizer, so that'll be replaced. Just got to see if anything else needs fixing.
I circled the switch in this picture (I posted this on reddit with the source, i can't post outside links here. Sorry for broken link, i don't have enough posts for proper links) imgur . com/JWUOnVc
Anyway, the switch gets stuck down and if I accidentally press it then the phone will just turn itself off and I can't use it until i get a pen/something small and put it in the little slot to pull it out, press it again, then pull it back out. It gets stuck all the way down, and my warranty is void due to it being over a year old, disassembling it, and unlocking the bootloader. I really like this phone, however this stuck power button is driving me crazy. Is there anything I can do to fix it? I really don't want to disassemble it to the point of removing the battery, but if I have to i will. Any way I can fix this?

That picture is useless , cannot make anything out.
Can you describe where you press ?
Is it the white rectangular piece at the top?
If it is and this sticks in when pressed ?
Then it's a collapsed switch internally.
You would just be bodging it for a short period if it is ,send it in for repair
Can you send better pictures, so can get a better picture of its legs which take pressure on the pcb..and its actual circuit?
If you know someone good with electronics, you could get them to put a minute tiny reed switch to its circuit and place it somewhere with a bit of space..then you could use a magnet to switch on outside the device.
Depends how much your phone matters to you
Same problem here, my power button is stuck, I have to use the phone without the back cover. I use the double-tap for screen off/on but I can not switch off the phone.
It seems the button is a small SMD and not easy to replace on the motherboard, button looks like this: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/For-...wer-on-off-button-flex-cable/32804672233.html
Really had high hope for this phone, but don't think they got it figured out. When I first got the phone, the camera housing already rattled a little, but it didn't bother me. You can also hear the motor moving when you press the power button. Now the camera won't extend fully no matter how many times I recalibrated it. No even had this phone for 6 weeks...Be aware if you're getting it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHRqrYYyr3o&feature=youtu.be
Have you used the calibration tool?
Go to Settings > Advanced > Flip camera features > Camera retraction (Or just long press the camera retraction tile) and use the "Calibrate camera angle" tool.

I have recalibrated it multiple times, as well as setting the default value.
I missed the part where you said that you had recalibrated it. My bad.
Let us know if you're able to warranty it without too much trouble.
Asus will repair it under warranty, but will ask you to pay shipping to send it back. It's been in their repair center for a week now waiting on parts.
I wanted this phone to succeed, and I waited over 5 months for it. But I already bought oneplus 7 pro and the pop up camera is much better IMO. Not gonna gamble on Asus products again, no matter how cool they look.
Try this:
Click for selfie, then use volume up button to turn flip camera all way to 90 degree. Do the same when camera is retracted.
I have the same issue, calibrated many times as well. Seems just decide sometimes to not do the full rotation.
Personally I just live with it and manually rotate it further with the on screen helper.
Well, after 5 months, this has happened to me, too. Camera won't fully extend, and kind of flops around. Not sure what happened. I don't use the selfie mode often, so I'm not even sure how long it's been like this. Guess I'll try sending it in to Asus? Sucks that this is the second time I'll be sending it in, in the short time I've had it (power button was loose when I first got it).
(Tried calibration, did not help)
I went searching to see if someone knows how to fix the camera motor. I sent my phone for warranty and they're claiming I damaged my phone which is interesting because my phone has never been dropped, hasn't even seen rain. I take better care of my phone than my own health tbh (I know that's nothing to be proud of lol). I disputed it but I'm sure they won't budge.
I bought my phone from B&H Photos because it was near impossible to find it in Canada at the time. When I received it, the flash was barely working (once in a while it'll work) so it was definitely manufacture defect, I didn't want to send it back and wait weeks for another one as I desperately needed a phone (pixel XL no longer held a charge) plus I didn't care much for flash. Forward 6 months later, camera motor stops working and I get that annoying error message that somethings wrong with the camera.
Attached is the quote from Asus...might as well buy another phone. I wish Google had expandable storage so I could get the "premium care" with it.
