First Night with my Nexus - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Picking up my Nexus after work...what's the first couple of things I should do with it? Backup, Root, and ROM...or Game?...or whatever the rest of you do with your entertainment only devices?!?!?!
My phone is now a dedicated business doer, and is getting put on the charger when I walk through the door!

If you think you're ever going to root, the very first thing you should do is unlock your bootloader, since that will immediately factory reset the entire device. Better as soon as you get it rather than later, once you have lots of data.

Lost phone.

Just lost my phone in taxi I'm rooted also have face unlock and pattern unlock secondary. Is there anything I can do to assure the finder can't use it. Or can I track it. I'm on monthly 4g so no insurance!
That sucks man. As for gps locating your phone I believe that's offered by your insurance, or if you had any type of Norton, kaspersky, trend micro etc security on it. They offer stuff like that. Otherwise you might be SOL. As for them getting in I don't know. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that answer.

Go to the play store from your computer and download "plan b" it will be pushed to your phone and allows you to track it.

A buddy of mine used "Lost Phone" app from Play store
I hate how easy it is for someone to look up how to wipe a phone and easily bypass all security. Usually when someone finds a phone, that person doesn't want to know your stuff.
Where's my Droid can also be pushed, and then you can get it's location

did u ever set up Lookout on you phone? it comes w/it.. if you maybe randomly did one day, you can find it with that
2nd to the Plan B. That works amazingly. Also, check if you have a cab receipt. You might be able to use that to identify which cab specifically had the phone. You can call into their dispatch office and ask for that cab. Lookout is awesome too.
I called the cab said he saw no phone. Another passanger could have gotten it. I'm not even going to bother now what's done is done. Thanks to you and everyone for your help. I wanted a new phone anyway maybe my wife will get me one for fathers day. I'll wait and probably get a note or galaxy nexus I'm sticking with Samsung I have a windows and a iPhone at home but don't feel like it I can't go backwards .

I find that the GS3 is not much of a significant upgrade from the GSII. I would much more suggest a Galaxy Nexus since it will still be relevant for many more months to come. The GN comes with pure stock ICS not that TW crap. The GN is almost certain to receive jellybean directly from Google pretty quick while the S3 will have to suffer through what the SII just went through from GB to ICS

Should've went with nexus style all screen.that was kind of the point of ics

I would recommend setting up a pin lock on your next device, that way whenever the phone is restarted it prompts you for the pin. It doesn't matter if it's been wiped or not, it registers with your carrier. Also, as added security, I use Avast and from there I can remotely wipe my sd card and the phone, thus removing any chance of someone getting any of my personal info.

I totally agree don't know why these manufacturers still making new ics devices with buttons. Besides the nexus the only other device I see with on screen is a new Motorola phone coming out.

[Q] Dumb TWRP backup question.

Quick question:
I'm getting a replacement GN2 on Monday.
Before running Triangle Away and restoring my current phone to stock, if I were to take a TWRP backup, could I simply restore the entire backup to the new phone without any issues considering it's all the same hardware?
I'm assuming that the other one will be an i317 as well, not a i317m. I'll verify though.
Yes, it's dumb, but I've never actually found a need to restore a backup in my life before despite the countless flashing.
Thanks!

its a waste of time bothering to restore to stock, since they wont care if your phone is rooted if its being replaced..
never understand why people bother going through the hassle if they are getting a phone replaced..

My phone is being replaced through Javelin Media, they're a marketing company that sets up Samsung booths. One of their employees damaged my phone, so they're replacing it and they intend on repairing mine and doing idk what with it. I'm not really sure if I should revert to stock or not honestly.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Might as well..it's easy to do
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda premium
or just flash a "stock looking" rom..those fools wont bother looking at it too closely
I was thinking of just flashing a stock rom all together. Because they intend on getting it repaired, I don't really want to leave any chance for them to say something about it.
Looks like reverting to stock is easy enough though, may as well do it I guess.

Even though I agree with wase4711.. I wouldn't give these guys any chance to screw you over.
I remember your problem from the other thread.. And if your phone gets back modified to some guy like the one who did the damage, then they would definitely find any reason to say something.
You never know, there may be some people from xda working there. If they are paying for the replacement, one would think that they would go through the trouble to make sure that it hasn't been tampered with.
Good luck!
Just got the replacement today!
No creaks!
The issue is, I restored my old backup after having to rename the TWRP folder to match my old phones ID, but now it wasn't a "full" restore? My s-notes, ringtones, etc are missing?
I definitely don't want them to screw me over, so I'll make sure they get a phone in the same state as they sent me.

What will T-Mobile do if they find out if I'm rooted?

I need to take my phone up there because the phone is having problems with the battery and I've done everything I can. I have insurance on the phone and also have Android JB 4.1.2 and I'm rooted. Is there anyway to hide it or should I even care?

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

I most likely just try to extract some info from them so maybe I could fix it myself. I really don't want to pay them money for something not my fault.

Oh, simple enough then! Just go to SuperSU and unroot.
You could even try to temp unroot if you think that's all you'd need to do to hide it.
Befire you unroot though, do you have a custom recovery or kernel installed? If not, then run triangle away, then unroot. If you do, reflash root66, then use TA and unroot.

What's the problem with the battery?
I like the features I get with my stock build, but I'm considering a root for better control over my apps, (Greenify, permission control) so this thread seems like a relevant question.
Is Triangle Away and unrooting all it takes to make it appear that I haven't done anything?
The warranty issue is the only thing stopping me, it's saved me a bunch in the past...

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.

Basically, made an idiot move by unlocking early and then exchanging my phone for reasons too complicated and boring to explain. Now, no more unlock. I guess my unlock.bin file from first phone is useless?

Yes, basically. You are now, unfortunately, locked until someone finds us a way to unlock. Or you could pay to have your phone s-off, via Sonic's thread. He purchased a javacard and is charging a fee, which I find to be very decently priced, to s-off peoples phone. You will have to send your phone to him, though, so unless you have a backup phone, you'll be without a phone for a few days.
Wow. Hope you had a good reason to lose an unlocked device.

let me guess, OCD and that little gap up top was too much, or that one little scratch in the trim, or 1 dead pixel...

I had to make an exchange due to bad radios and lost my unlock also. A functional phone comes before unlock.
If your unlock token worked on your new phone it would work for all phones.
sorry you lost unlock.

[Q] Switching ROMS

Hello I Have a Nexus 6 and the Moto360 (Obviously).
I understand that every time you change phones (or Roms) you have to factory reset the Moto360.
Is theres any way to avoid that so I don't have to start over with the Moto360 everytime?
I change between Roms a lot, I love testing and new features, etc.
Thanks in Advance
+1 would love to know if it's at all possible to restore moto body data after a reset
