Vibration Motor Gone Bad? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just the other day my phone has started vibrating weird with a buzzing noise. There was no particular thing that could of caused it which is why im like in a state of wtf. Do u guys think the vibration motor may have moved out of place or is loose and I can open and re put it in place or.... Do u guys think its completely broke? It does still vibrate and unless its on the top 2 vibration intensities you cannot feel it.

Try the following test:
*#7353#
After the test, just hit the back button to back out.
Under:
Settings
My device
Vibration intensities
Do any of those work on lower settings?
Are you stock?
Try a Factory reset.
Here are a couple of options if you have a hardware issue:
- Asurion insurance or other type of insurance you may have
- Samsung one year warranty
Below are 2 links.
The first to a website that sells the OEM vibration motor, but verify if you purchase.
The second is an S4 take down video.
S4 OEM vibration motor (verify this if purchasing via part # and other possible suppliers)

Edit:
I reread your post and see that you have a working motor that you can't really feel on the 2 lower settings. I take that to mean the motor is working, but lightly (I originally thought they weren't working, hence my links.) And the 2 other settings have a noise.
Guess all motors are different, or maybe something is 'loose.' I suggest to keep an eye on it, and if the issue gets worse, etc., you can always reference the links above.

Mine has an insanely intense vibration as well. Was like that since the first day. Just bump down vibration in settings (i use KTweaker app personally).

I opened it and the motor looks fine and nothing is lose. I put it all back together and will unroot and go to stock so I can do the warranty. However do u think there is a clear way for T-Mobile to tell I opened it? There wasn't any seals or things unplugged that are seeable and I closed it near perfection. (Bottom is barely not flush and I can say it was like that) plus the people will see everything else is flush and I doubt they will go in depth enough to check it all. No water damage and physical damage. In prestine condition. So I will get a new one for 20$ and 3-4business days the rep told me.

Sounds good to me.
I doubt they will meticulously check the fitment.
I'm not sure if there is anything that would tip them off to screw removal such as any tamper proof markings, etc.
Just check the Bootloader to make sure everything is stock.

I will and I'm gonna make sure its dead stock when I do it and if he asks why I have it reset I'll say I did a completely factory reset. And there was nothing like a marking or a special tape you lift when opening it. U just take off back, take out cards and battery, unscrew the screws, thus causing the edge to be very slightly lifted... where you use a small card and pop it out around the edges (small snaps like the back cover putting on, that popp back into place normally when you put it back together) then its completely off and you see the board... you undo 1 screw on the board and lift like 1-2 plugs such as the thing that leads to the screen and the 4G antenna cable and then you lift up the board and see the motor underneath. The motor was normally placed so I put the board back, plugged everything in normally and snapped it all in place. Came out perfect and bottom I can say is just due to the motor being wrong, or something else messed up causing it. But since I'm doing it through T-Mobile and not Samsung's warranty I'm guessing the store rep will just say its hardware failure and get me a new one and when they go to fix it all they won't care and just swap out the entire board itself.

Lucky you!
Everyone S4 I've seen has a really weak vibration motor that you can barely feel. It's the one real flaw to the S4

I think the S4 has a vibration motor that doesnt have a 'hammer' to it or whatever the part is called that some phones do. Explains why some peoples phone sounds like a vibration "ringtone" then a vibrating phone xD

My S4 wears a Cygnett WorkMate Evolution case, and my S4 vibrates off whatever surface it's on
Jk, but it does have a powerful vibration mode that's easily felt through the case.

Hopefully my refurbished when I get it will act like that. I appreciate all the help guys but I pray that they dont find something wrong with my opening of it and then try to charge me.I hope not but see if all goes well.

I wouldn't worry much.
You'll be going to a Tmo store.
Make small talk with the rep about Kitkat or something, until he makes the swap.
Or are you sending it in?
I gotta read that post again.
You will have to pass a lie detector test though lol!

It's just a tiny little motor with a lopsided weight on the shaft to make it be unblanced when it spins. Spinning it faster makes it vibrate a little more intensly, but putting a more lopsided weight on it is what really makes the magix happen. They are actually REALLY easy to modify once you have access to the motor itself. All you have to do is add a small drop of solder (like REALLY small) to the heavy side of the weight and it will be even heavier on that side so it vibrates more.
It doesn't take much, and adding too much can over do it and cause the motor to vibrate too much and wear out quickly. Remember, every other motor on the planet is specifically engineered to avoid this by making it perfectly balanced. For larger motors any imbalence will lead to the bearings wearing out quickly. Tiny little motors like this can get away with it, but they have their limits.
(If anyone tries this mod and breaks their phone, that's your problem, not mine. I don't actually recomend doing this because Ic an't tell you exactly how much solder to put on. I'm just saying it'll work if you do it right.)

Motor looks nothing like that for the S4. The motor is a small little circular thing that almost looks like a small magnet.

Maybe they can:
Pre order a replacement for in store exchange.
When it arrives, swap it out.
Or
Do they need the phone first to check out, then they'll exchange it?
If you don't have insurance, what is the warranty protocol?
The S4 to Tmo to Samsung to Tmo to you?

Well way I assume it will work is when I go there, the guy will check it out and figure its a device that has problems and will order a refurbished replacement. I get the phone in the mail in a few days and of course it comes with a packaging and stuff and a return sticker. I put my phone with all of its contents back in its box with that stamp and give it to UPS. UPS delivers it back to T-Mobile and god knows what they do with it. I'm assuming they will check it and then get Samsung to fix it and then use it themselves as a refurbished device (but I'm hoping that Samsung doesnt receive it from T-Mobile and be like... "this was tampered with" and then T-Mobile has to charge me full price or they mail me that back.

Once Tmo accepts it, that's it. I wouldn't worry to much about it.
They get tons of phones every day, Samsung & Tmo.
They most likely check the obvious:
Bootloader
Device Status
Water damage
If the above, they check at all.
Just tell them you opened it up, and everything looks just fine lmao!
Jk
Don't tell'm that.

Haha I had hard-bricked my GS2 when I first got it because I was a rooting noobie and thought.. (I'll play it safe... instead of the complicated looking XDA stuff (LOL YES AT The time xD) I will just use the Cyanogen website cause its so cleanly shown) and big bad move... I installed the Cyanogen old version of a International S2 and hard-bricked it. They totally replaced it free, next-day
Should be no problem with this I hope.

It's still the same thing...a lopsided weight being spun. It's a visual aid to help people get a mental image of how vibration is made.
But with the kind that the s4 has you can't see the spinny part easily. Hence my picture.

Loose piece.

Hey, um... slightly embarrassing question here. I dropped my EVO off a staircase. It seems fine and runs well, except there seems to be something loose inside, noticeable only when using the haptic keyboard. My question is this: would it do any good at all to open it up and try to fix it, or is the vibrator too deep for me to safely access? Thanks for your time.

Ahahahahaha!!! Sorry, had to say point that out
Anyways, yes, it can be opened, and you may be able to fix it, but if there's no outward damage, take it to Sprint and have it swapped and say it just started making that noise. I don't want to encourage you to take advantage of them, but that's your best option here.
The phone is ridiculously easy to disassemble and reassemble, but there is a sticker over ONE of the the back panel screws (the one on the left middle). If that sticker is broken, your warranty is void. It's too far recessed to peel it off with a razor and stick it back on, so unless you have a tiny black sticker to put back in once you're done, you should just swap it to keep your warranty.
Huh, I guess insurance isn't a bad idea for some people.

Hover feature my a$$

Okay, to make a long story short, for the first time ever I'm getting a full phone replacement within a week of having a phone.
Now for the story, get note 2, jump for joy, use s pen, good to go, use s pen again, random lines, dots, accidental screen presses, go to sprint store(affiliate market), "that's simple the hover feature, don't you know how to use your phone" call Samsung "that's simple the hover feature, don't you know how to use your phone" call sprint (corporate) yea that does sound like a faulty unit, we'll get you swapped out right away" now all I wanted was an s pen swap, but I'll live with a fresh phone, but I ask the community now, am I really in the right here for questioning a brand new phone? Or is it truly just the hover feature and I'm just not use to it?
P.S. I do have a screen protector, but I have taken it off to see if the problem still repeated which it did, thus making me reapply the screen protector

If you are a getting a replacement, why did you post this? If your phone was defective, what is the question?
I ordered my phone directly through Sprint and received either a faulty pen or a faulty phone. Went to Sprint and the customer service representative saw that my pen was registering lines in only certain areas and hitting the keyboard while hovering over in air mode. She knew something was up and went to the "technician" to see what he thought. He didn't even look at the phone and just replied, "it's supposed to do that" repeatedly. She even tried to have him look at how inconsistent this "feature" was as it only made marks or registered hits in certain parts of the phone. It made me rather angry that he didn't even bother to acknowledge the customer rep's concern or mine for that matter. I ended up having Sprint replace the whole phone too which was a pretty smooth process.
I think Samsung has some faulty pens and don't want to acknowledge that fact. Perhaps they know some people either don't use the Spen enough to care or won't simply complain about it. The phone is wonderful and the S-pen, when working correctly, is freaking awesome. Best phone I've ever had and I am not trying to bash sprint or samsung but I think it's in there best interest to acknowledge this issue rather than simply saying it is how the phone is supposed to work.

This was resolved in the international forums. I was having similar issues and five minutes later the pen was as it should have been. The trick to removing the button cover is to lift from the end opposite the tip. A small clockwise turn and I was all set.

The screen isn't pressure sensitive either...it's all the s pen.I tried the hovered cardboard trick as well....and the pressure was all the pen. Disappointed Samsung.everyone reviews the phone as having a "pressure input screen", it should read sensor pics up pen data as how hard is being pressed.

How did things get this far without mentioning duct tape, WD40, and "30 grade oil and ball bearings"? It's all ball bearings these, everybody knows this.
For (S) pen n00bs like me, I like it so far. Luckily, (knock on wood) I seem to have a good one out of the box. I've used the notepad feature for my last trip to Home Depot. Sorta difficult at first to write on it. Kinda gotta "figure it out" for yourself, I think.
One feature I had to get used to was hovering the pen over buttons. Mine seemed "click-happy" anytime I hovered over a button. Again, practice.
So far, I am VERY pleased with the Note 2. (Rooted stock w/ TWRP recovery)

[Q] Adjusting Trigger Buttons?

I had my new xperia play delivered yesterday, and while I'm really pleased with it overall, there's one thing that's slightly offputting. The right trigger button feels far looser than the left, and requires much more force to register when playing a game etc. It also seems to be sitting slightly higher up than the left.
Is there any way to adjust the 'tightness' of the trigger? It's not the end of the world obviously, but it is quite annoying for a new phone, particularly as it's a button that is going to be used regularly.
Apologies if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find anything about it on the forum.
The screw on the inside adjacent to the button can influence it, but do not screw it too much because might will cause it to become lose. You will need a size T5 torque bit.

Do you mean the screw directly behind the trigger, underneath the battery cover? I thought that could be related, but the screw appears as if it is already as tightly screwed as possible?

I haven't look at it very much, but if you unscrew them all and pry the back off, you will be exposed to the entire mechanism and see if you can adjust it.

Well in that case maybe you should get an exchange, but really they would hardly notice if you just unscrew it and put it back and its quite easy to do. If you bought it new and the factory sticker on the box was not removed, then it wouldn't be acceptable to have this issue. If you didn't have a factory sticker then its wasn't new.
Unfortunately this is not uncommon, my R trigger is *slightly* more sensitive than my L trigger, anyone playing on my phone would never notice it unless they were purposely looking for something to complain about. My suggestion to you is to hold down the R button and insert the edge of a trading card and run it thru gently taking any dust or dirt with it, then get a damp microfiber, take off the battery cover and wipe down the R button. I do this every couple of months to keep my triggers clean

Sprint store says there is water damage to my phone, I don't see it

I went to the Sprint Store today to ask that they look into the GPS issues I have been having, after trying multiple supposed fixes here, I haven't been able to get GPS to work well.
When I initially went in, the lady that handled me was just odd, telling me that it could be a software problem from me downloading music online, etc. Honestly, I was taken a back by this, first off, I don't see how that is any way related. Then when I told her that these phones have GPS problems she started claiming "I have dealt with this phone for months, and I have never heard of any GPS problems". Now, I have been in this store every three months, because I have a friend that works there, and for one reason or another things get broken (Chargers specifically). She literally kept blaming the software and was ready to instantly wipe the phone because it was rooted. I told her to have at it, but I don't think the issue was with the device being root'ed or any form of software problem.
Anyways, I come back an hour later, she has the phone disassembled, and points to water damage being the indicating cause of all of my problems. So here is where I need some help with this because I am damn sure this phone doesn't have water damage.
1) Does this phone have indicator strips?
2) Where is the GPS chip located - I was looking through two pictures: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Epic+4G+Touch+Teardown/6481/2#s28010 and couldn't pinpoint the GPS chip from the descriptions.
3) She stated that there was a toothpaste like coloring, but when she handed me the PCB, I couldn't locate this. I infact couldn't locate anything about discoloring on the PCB so I am not sure how she came to that conclusion. This was located on the Step 12 image in the above link, which from the looks of it, everything on that side of the PCB would be storage or cellular issues (not saying that it couldn't be related, but I would have noticed a more immediate problem with the storage capacity on the phone if there was in fact water damage on that side which there is not).
4) Immediately, without almost any other word, she brought up insurance and wanted me to pay the hundred dollars to get it fixed. I declined obviously
I was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue with going to the Sprint store and talking about this. I may text my friend that works there and have her look at it this next time, but, I was wondering if they keep notes about water damage on the backend on things like this.
I just don't see any parts of where water damage might have occured.
EDIT: I should have probably mentioned where she said this occured, this is in the picture in step 12, right above the outlined orange, and to the right of the black chip.
Take it apart yourself. Clean it. Bring it to another store. I have brought my phone in before. I babied the heck out of that thing. Thet said water damaged. I called bs. They couldnt show me a sticker because when I checked it myself it hadnt went off. I looked at the board and no corrosion.

Considering I have never taken the device apart before, is it all that difficult?
I mean, even reading ifixit's guide doesn't tell me how much of a chore it may or may not be.
EDIT: also, what would be the best way to clean it off/up?
Its not hard. But you have to be careful with the ribbons for your buttons. Follow a guide or a youtube video it will make it easier. To clean it get a small brush and IPA aka isopropyl alcohol.

Also make sure there is damage first. Look for a white almost powdered looking substance on the board. Make sure your dont get alcohol on the litmus paper. I am pretty sure the alcohol would set it off (if its not set off already)

Would the litmus paper be the paper with X's going all over it, or would it be something else (perhaps a sticker on one of the chips)? I don't see anything that would give away there is water damage. I see what looks like the material they use when they want to attach a chip to a PCB ( I have seen it on refurbished motherboards before).
I am trying to get a decent picture, but unfortunately, I don't really have a good camera to do this with, and my only other cameras battery is dead so I am waiting on that to charge.

If you look at 3rd picture(toward the top right) there's a red stain I don't think that supposed to be there.

I think I see what you are talking about, I believe that is lighting, I didn't see it when it isn't underneath the desk lamp I was using to take the pictures.
EDIT, i modified the sentence, because i don't have the phone in front of me i changed the wording, i can look at it again when i have it dismantled
EDIT2: Yeah, just took it apart again, I don't see the red spot that you are talking about (http://i.imgur.com/bWgTNGk.jpg) in that picture. It was lighting.
I will also say, this is a refurb phone as my first phone was giving me all sorts of problems as well, then I got this as a replacement.

If it's clean just put it back together and take it to a different store.

Looks clean from here other than the lighting showing that red spot. The litmus paper looks good. Only other question is how is the litmus on the battery itself? If that one has triggered I could see them trying to say it was water damaged. Take the phone to another store. If they too come back and say its water damaged ask them to show you where the corrosion is. Because I dont see it.

Well, I tried taking it to another store to have it looked at. Apparently the woman flagged it as water corrosion/ dnr they said something about dstb (some code, can't remember it). So I am basically SOL which is dumb. The stickers aren't tripped, they have blue X's on them, which according to squshy 7 means that they haven't been tripped yet.
So... basically looks like I am going to have to wait for an upgrade, because I am not willing to pay insurance for something like this when I know it isn't an issue.

The original store, or the new store? They literally wouldn't touch it.
The first store did, when I was up there, but like I said, I didn't see it at all.
This second one just didn't touch it. I think I have one other repair store in my area, but after that I am just going to wait it out till an upgrade.

When you take it demand to see were the water damage is. If they don't show you then imho there really is no water damage. The second store didn't inspect it but said water damage. How is that possible.

The second store wouldn't inspect it because their ticket tracker says that there is water corrosion on the device, which means they aren't able to touch the phone.
I called up a CS Rep and spoke to one of the supervisors, she told me the notes say that there is corrosion on the bottom left of the device (if the phone is screen down), which is highly improbably since that part of the phone is purely plastic, there is no PCB/metal that it could occur on, and then on the top right, which again, from the pictures, I don't see anything in the top right corner. I see the re-flux (I believe that is what it is called) which as I posted earlier, I see that on motherboards too, so that can't be it.
She told me to just keep trying at stores, so, I really don't have any other option, I will try the other repair store in my area and then after that. I guess a BBB report might work, but that is way over the top to just get the mark taken off the phone.

How can there be water damage on plastic I think they just don't want anything to do with it. Do you see any water damage? Try the last store don't tell them you've taken the phone to other stores. If they also say water damage ask to see were the water damage is.

(Reflow is what I was thinking of, not reflux)
There can't be water damage on plastic, it isn't a corrosive surface. Even the CS Supervisor I talked to understood that basic fact.
Unfortunately, I just don't have it in me to go to another store right now, so I will probably go tomorrow. I mean, I have spent the last 5 hours trying to figure this thing out.

Sorry, I guess I missed this post somehow.
The litmus paper on the battery (as far as I can tell) is fine. When I called the CS Rep, they said that if the phone had been triggered with water damage on the battery, it wouldn't be white. My battery itself is fine. I have two, they look identical in every way.
Just wanted to make sure. I have many batteries for my s2. Some have the paper triggered. Not from being in the phone. Probably from being in my pocket or something. But was given a hard time on that. You are taking them to a corporate store right?

Plastic is only corrosive to salt water. There is a possibility of mineral deposits on plastic, but I personally think they are full of sh*t. They are trained to lie to you about anything they can. What you can do is tell them you will cancel your contract if they do not have that flag removed and have a few more looks at it. They will normally try to do anything they can to keep a customer. You will have to be stern with them.

Unfortunately, I am not the account holder, it is a family plan account. So I don't have a lot of runway with that. The worst thinig I can do is talk to a store manager, or file a BBB complaint, or deal with the phone lines.
If it fails tomorrow as in they won't at least take the note off the account, it will be a BBB complaint, and I will be sure that they at least open it up, search for water damage, and if they can't find any, I am going to bring a camera along with me.
EDIT:
At this point, I am just trying to figure out what I am going to say. If I tell them straight up the whole story and fib a bit by saying that they wouldn't show me where the water damage was, or I just want a second opinion of another stores claim, or if I just don't mention it at all, and when it is brought up then I start talking about.

[Q] Does your device creak?

I got my note 4 days ago. At first everything was ok, but yesterday I noticed my device is terribly creaking. Almost every time I touch the back it sounds like the plastic would break a little bit (Although I don't think it would actually break).
Do you have the same issues? Or should I sent it back and get a new one, since it's really annoying me...?
Thank you )

Mine creaks a little in the bottom right corner. Everything else is fine. I think it's the plastic back giving a bit. I had this on the Nexus 10 as well.
Creaking is for Hollween not for my Tablet!

Yes, When I held the tablet with my left hand to touch the screen with my right it creaked like a rock band with bad music! Geeish.....the silver chrome or whatever the material is wasn't tight and it just bend. I returned it right away. I really didn't want to return it. However, I paid full price and not second hand money so I expect the performance to be right, that means no noise. When listening to music or watching a movie it seems as if someone was moving around and that can be pretty annoying. I tried holding it different ways with no change. So back it went. Let Samsung sell. This I know imagine you trying to sell it to the next person, what do you think they might say and how much will the value go down?

Yes, As soon as I opened the package, I noticed the bottom right hand corner was creaking an popping. It is not like I was looking for it. That made me investigate if the rest of the trim was doing the same. If you put your mind into into it, you can get some creaking from other ends of the trim but nothing like the bottom right hand corner. Every time I pick it up, it is annoying me so much that I feel I should take it back. I am not sure the guys at PCWorld would accept this as a reason for full money back or replacement claim. I do like the tablet, but do not want a noisy plastic in my hands.
Is this enough of a reason to ask for a replacement?

Sadly I dont think it is (pure guess so dont take my word for it) BUT I can 100% say that your Tablet will have a little bit of lightbleed along the bottom and sides....this alone is a good enough reason for them to accept and exchange - Good luck.

Hi,
Could you please elaborate on the light bleed issue. How do you determine if you have a light bleed and what is the significance of it.

Put screen britghness to 100% and open this http://www.net-tracker.net/android/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/black_bg_1024x768.png, make sure it covers the entire screen inc notifications part and then switch off your lights in your room and you will then see light bleed, Its nothing major and common on LCD'S but it is a valid reason for a return/exchange.
I had lightbleeding on my first note but I found it to be acceptable however on my 2nd tablet I found the bleeding to be excessive and off putting so I got a refund from John Lewis,
Anyways this thread should give you an idea too - best of luck :good: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554094

Got mine 2 weeks ago, and it sounds like a bowl of snap, crackel, and pop, sitting on bubble wrap.
If i look at it wrong, it makes noises. I might take it back and have them look at it... see if that warrants an exchange.

If your one is not creaking then this definitely should be a rightful exchange claim for all those unfortunate to pick up badly put together tablets.
I am even considering getting my money back and going the Apple way. Excellent build quality, and I know that because I got some for the kids.
yeah maybe idk. Sammy is also known for build issues lately so you have to really inspect before you take home. The Note 3 home button is all wonky and wobbly on a lot of units.

Sorry for the question, but what is "idk" in your post?
Having a creaking case, would that get worse in terms of speading all around the tablet's trim?
Any experiences but no guesses please!

"IDK" means "I Dont Know".
I guess if the creaking was coming from say a loose glass to the digitizer i think it could be something that spreads. Since if the glass isn't glued down well enough i could see slight dust getting in there and causing more separation over time. I doubt this is the case as you'd see bubbling at the edges if that was happening.
