Hey guys I had a curious thought. I downloaded an NFC tag reader and was able to read some basic info from my Boston MBTA CharlieCard. I know it's a mifare classic chip. I was wondering how hard/legal it would be to somehow clone the card info so I could use my phone to pay the fare. Already dabbled with google wallet so I love the idea of getting rid of crap in my pocket. My door locks are next

Sweet, I used NFC Classic which can ave it and use it as a new profile..it read my bus pass, and even my chase visa credit card! I'll have to test it next week on the bus.
It pulls two profiles off the card, I'm not sure which to use.

I JUST moved to Boston and am taking the red line into work every day. If you can get this working or find someone who can let me know. This would be the ideal solution.
Anyone know of a way to do this? Seems like Farebot in the market does what I'm asking in other markets. My knowledge of this stuff gets weak beyond flashing roms and troubleshooting phones

It's not disabled insomuch as it's not even in the public API.
If it uses NDEF as a messaging container you can use NDEF push (you'll likely need to write your own app for this, but it wouldn't be terribly difficult) - otherwise emulation of other card types / protocols just isn't present currently.
AFAIK Farebot only reads the data as well.
Anyone willing to accept that as a challenge?

Another user on XDA, m0rtadelo, created a patch for the Nexus S 2.4.1_r1:

Maybe we can see his changes and port them to the GN ICS?
Any news on this front?
it would be wonderful to have the ability to open the doors at school with my phone rather than picking up my wallet
I too am interested. I'm in Montreal and we use the same tech with our BUS cards, so does my gym and work card. It would be awesome if my phone could completely replace my wallet.
please, if anyone knows of someone working on this let me know. I'm willing to donate for the cause.
i think everyone is pretty keen for nfc emulation! just have to find someone with the skills and motivation to do it. with NFC becoming more widespread, im sure that someone will pick up the task, especially with the nexus.
This would be awesome!
So since my OP the MBTA has mobile payment options for the commuter rail. Anyone know any other ways?
I have been trying to find out if it has nfc. Some sites say yes others say no and some say it has the hardware but sprint disabled it because they want us to use their mobile payment instead. So can anyone clarify this for me...

I read something about nfc being in the battery or something?

The other US versions of the SGS2 have NFC, not our E4GT.
On those phones the NFC antenna is in the battery. The rest of the hardware is in the phone itself, so we can't get NFC by simply swapping batteries.
I was pretty disappointed by this since Sprint is a Google Wallet partner and all.

I don't really care to much about the mobile payment aspecT of nfc.
I'm more worried that android beam uses nfc and its a huge part of ics. If you guys aren't sure what I'm talking about I believe there is a youtube video. With nfc and android beam you can seamlessly send maps and directions, website links and a bunch of other cool stuff between two different phones

I think NFC will be nice in one regard - electronic receipts. I hate dealing with paper receipts. When I use Wells Fargo ATMs I can have the receipt emailed to me, which is awesome.
Having electronic receipts tied to NFC payments will be great.
I look forward to progress with NFC in 2012.
Too bad the Epic Touch 4G doesn't have it built in, but perhaps there will be an add-on solution like the microSD card as someone mentioned.
If they were smart they'd create a system where you can pay via NFC and have the receipt emailed to you.

Yeah, I would like to have NFC just as much as the next guy, but it'll have to be in my next phone. And let's face it, until the iphone adds NFC, retailers won't pick it up nationwide.
NFC everywhere?
Even if it is everywhere it isn't used much yet. The store employees probably don't know how to use it. Give it time. I am sure when it get more common every smart phone will have NFC. The better question isn't when is our phone getting it, it is when will vending machines get it? No more scratching up change at work for a pop would be awesome.
So, like many,I'm locked out of google Wallet. Would it be worth it to file an insurance claim and get a different nexus (new or refurb) or should I just hold off and continue to wait for a fix?

How did you get locked out?
Well if you're using a VZW Nexus it's blocked/locked form usage. Did you get the apk or? I have wallet on my VZW Nexus and I can use it freely.
Cant you "break in" into Google Wallet by deleting the data so it asks you for you to set your pin?
I don't even think the galaxy nexus is officially supported by google wallet and the application is blocked in the market by verizon. It may have been the wallet security measures which locked your account and you could try calling google wallet support to reset your account.
Try ODIN Flashing and Fastboot Flashing yourself to stock. I don't think it could actually fix it, but it's worth a shot I guess. There will probably be a fix in the future, either from Google or XDA (my money is on XDA), but it will definitely be a while. I sold my Nexus One before it ever got a custom HBOOT, which many thought no one would take up. I would ask for a refurb personally, as I like using GWallet and it's one of the reasons I bought the phone.

Secure Element is a hardware component. Verizon cannot deny a claim on a hardware issue. That said...how do you explain to those peons to know the difference? I assume that if/when the ISIS app comes out, it will use SE as well. Then it will be easier to show them that its hardware (maybe).
Google Wallet may be blocked from the market, but Verizon allows sideloading of apps. Nowhere in their warranty terms do they say, "You are explicitly not allowed to install Google Wallet."
From what I've read, your secure element has shut itself down. If this is true, you'll probably never get a fix from either Google or XDA.
The OP could print out some Google support posts showing that phones need to be replaced when this happens. Verizon cannot void a warranty based on Google Wallet. The phone has the capability. It is of no fault that the user has a corrupted SE.
Better be stock and locked though.
@OP, if you're within your returns period then you should be able to just take the phone back.
However, though morally questionable, other people on these forums have had success by intentionally placing their phone into a bootloop to get a replacement device.

Google Wallet on GNex
My GNex is about 2 mo. old and when I first got it, one of the first things I wanted to do with it was put Google Wallet on it. Unfortunately, that was during the time when there were so many issues with it. After much research on XDA,(thanks so much by the way!), I installed the .apk from Google Wallet website. I have the "Unsupported Device" banner at the top of the screen but for me it's not a big deal. I have used it at several businesses and it worked flawlessly. I have even added funds to the Google Prepaid card from my bank's VISA debit card. An added bonus is peoples amazement when I pay for something with my phone. Google Wallets "Cool Factor" is off the scale.

you could keep it, but I am quite certain you are entitled to a replacement. a refurb is one thing, but a broken one is unacceptable, imho.
a broken secure element is a broken phone, that is an issue they replace phones for. get thee to a corp sprint store, tell them that you received a broken phone as a refurb. they will likely replace it.

I don't know that it's "only" for Wallet, but the underlying principle of mobile payments is the main reason. In other words, Wallet may be one of the main payment services, however more banks and financial institutions will probably be horning in on this as well for additional revenue streams.
http://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/applications/chip-card-and-security/nfc/index.html
This article does point out some other things as well, which Wallet does offer in it's app too (loyalty cards).
Based on Radio Frequency technology, NFC provides new wireless capabilities to mobile devices. Applied onto existing contactless infrastructures, NFC enabled devices are able to support convenient services such as:
Purchase goods
Gain access to transport systems
Get access to buildings or event
Cumulate points through loyalty programs
Applications such as NFC Mobile Payment utilize information that users want to keep private. Personal data and financial transactions must than be protected by the usage of NFC Secure Elements utilizing robust security concept similar to the security levels provided by certified credit cards.

Secure element is used for anything that requires a secure NFC connection, not just wallet. It is essentially an encrypted password protection for the NFC. For example I use TecTiles with a secure connection to store passwords on and only my phone can access them because of the secure element. Some companies with NFC door keycards have written apps so you can replace your keycard with your phone, requires the secure element. There are even some hotels that have the option to use the NFC in your phone for your hotel room keycard, also requiring the secure element. Without the secure element any of those things would be easily accessible from any phone with the same app setup on it. Not to mention broken secure element reduces the resale value of the device in the end since technically the device is broken.

I can confirm Skip will be given as a free bonus with all motomaker orders for a "limited time," I just don't know how long (first few days? weeks?).
Thanks. I imagine it probably just depends on how the phone sells? Google/Moto is probably providing at&t with some stock to get Skip visible in the public and get people interested in using it. Just a thought.
How do you guys see it being useful? I don't mean that in a snide way, just curious. Maybe I don't know enough about it but seems to just replace swiping to open? I have group administrative policies through work so I'd probably not be able to benefit much from it since we are forced to use a pin or password unlock. Kinda kills all the lock screen options out there. Damn government work. Anyway, seems like there could potentially be some cool Dev to expand the Skip functionality in the future? Call waiting/music and volume controls/etc. Not sure if any of that is compatible though.

It's kind of hard to understand exactly how useful it is until I actually get it later this week and test it out myself. Not even the press has given a review on it despite getting their motomaker phones yesterday, which I find it somewhat annoying because I'm curious exactly how useful it is. The basic usage is meant to work with a moto app that will allow your screen to disable the security lock pin/pattern if you had it enabled and it requires you to tap the phone to the clip on your clothing/belt or one of the "dots" that you can put in your car, desk, or other safe zone you want. Beyond that, the details are limited. Just have to wait at this point.

I don't think nfc tags inside it are propriety, so it should work any app that can control nfc. But that's the catch, you still need an app to control the actions and recognize the tags, which may still probably require root to do so depending on what app you use. You could try installing the moto skip app if you can find the apk and then see if it works. No guarantee though.

Well, it looks like the Moto Skip functionality doesn't work with any run-of-the-mill NFC tags. I installed their app, but I think it only listens for NFCs with a particular data header.
Anyone with a Skip tag willing to post an NFC dump?

According to Motorola's own support pages:
Can Moto X support the use of other NFC tags, or only Motorola Skip?
Once you have setup Motorola Skip, consumers can buy alternative aftermarket NFC tags (supported by the NXP chipset) and link it to Moto X for use alongside Motorola Skip.
Not bad.

I saw that, but they're leaving something out. I tried a half-dozen different tags that work perfectly with other NFC programs on my Moto X, but none of them trigger Motorola Skip setup. There's no way to manually run the Skip setup, so it must listen for some kind of preprogrammed code on the official Skip NFC tags.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with Motorola (thought I'd give it a shot). The support rep I talked with said Motorola Skip was only compatible with the official Skip clip and stickers. I mentioned the support page online saying it'd work with other tags, and she said that conflicted with her documentation. Boo.

Do you have an original Skip tag? I thought you needed to set up a real Moto tag first. Then you can setup 3rd party tags - at least that's how I read it.

Received my T-Mobile Moto X today. (Ordered it yesterday, they apparently decided to ship Priority Overnight, Saturday Delivery). It came with an official Motorola Skip. Configured it and the dots without an issue. Then went to Security > Manage NFC Unlock and tried to associate an NFC-based loyalty card I happened to have around. (Five Stars card, fwiw). It recognized the tag and indicated it needed to make additional room on it. I was prompted to "erase the data" on the card. Given that I really didn't want to render the card useless, I passed. But it sure seemed to me as if I had a blank tag of some kind that I could have written to it and started using it.

But it sure seemed to me as if I had a blank tag of some kind that I could have written to it and started using it.

Good. This is consistent with what's in the online documentation.
BTW does anyone know if original Skip tags can be purchased at retail stores, or is it only orderable from Motorola?
The skip was a horrible idea. I received mine 2 days ago after waiting the full 10 days. Then yesterday I went to the mall wearing it on my cargo pocket for my shorts and lost it somewhere..... Big ass waste of $20.
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Anybody willing to sell me theirs?
I can't get it in canada.
I'll do an NFC dump if I can get my hands on one.
At first I thought it was ridiculous to pay $20 for a simple NFC tag, but I can't get anything to activate the motorola skip software on my moto x.
I can unlock my screen with tasker if I could just get an NFC tag to be read with screen off or locked, but I cant get the motorola to read any of my NFC tags with my screen off or locked.... Anyone know how to do this? I know its possible because the skip is detected when the screen is off
