Power and volume buttons - should I exchange? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I recently purchased a 32GB N7 and I love it.... but.... the buttons have me wondering if I should exchange it. The problem: power button requires a couple of pushes to actually trigger the function, and the volume down is nearly flush with the frame. Volume up is perfect.
Thoughts?

I would take back.

I don't have those issues with mine. So you should return it since it isn't normal.

Loose volume rocker - can I return

I got my replacement Defy today and I've noticed the volume rocker seems looser than on my first device. It can be heard rattling when the phone is shook even just lightly and also when the phone vibrates and when I tap on the area of the screen closest to the rocker. The question is will Amazon.co.uk accept this as a valid reason for another replacement? I have to say they were a delight to return to originally however the original problem wasn't as trivial.
Thanks
I would return it if it were mine. The reasons is, I'd be concerned about whatever kind of a seal is supposed to be in the rocker to keep water out may not be tight or may be missing. Just my two cents.
Mine does the same noise, but until now no leaking problems. And I must say that on mine even the power button is a bit loosy.

power button issue

Is it just my a100 or can everybody else turn there unit on and off by pushing above the power button. Try and press just below the headphone jack.
tried it. Didn't work for me.
Could it be that the plate is mounted wrong? Mine doesn't turn off, either.
something must be screwed up in there but everything looks normal round the power button and the heaephone jack.

Weirdly it does on mine also! Only noticed it after you mentioned it so I'm not too worried about it. I am curious about why it happens though

I'm not to worried about it either just wondering if there were more out there. Must be a manufacturing defect.

I've had my Acer a 100 for 7 months and the casing between the power button and the head phone socket behaves as if it's the power button including the, click. I'm worried there's a problem since upgrading to ICS the device will sometimes not waken from sleep with the power button nor the casing and I have to press the reset button

HOW TO: Repairing Galaxy Nexus Power Button (Video up now)

I was recently faced with a dead power button on my beloved Galaxy Nexus and was forced to repair it myself due to the fact that my phone wasn't covered by warranty here and Samsung was charging a butt load to do it themselves.
I went on iFixit and saw how easy it was to repair the phone and scoured the internet for parts.
The website I used for all the parts and tools seen in this video is https://www.tvc-mall.com/
You can get everything from there.
Sorry for the shoddy camera work and poor lighting (the video was shot by my friend using his Galaxy S3).
Also, I forgot to mention the reason why my power button looks different from everyone else's and I will do that in another video hopefully. If I never get around to it; here is the explanation.
I actually repaired the original power button by taking it apart. Let me tell you, it wasn't an easy task as it requires a delicate hand and a lot of patience.
What I did was, I used a razor blade to cut open the plastic tape covering the power button membrane. After that, I used some WD40 on a small ball of cotton and scrubbed both the membrane and the circuit out. Then I wrapped it back up with electrical tape and used it until I got the parts ordered in.
I hope this video serves its purpose and that all of you who faced this problem were able to fix it.
Here is the video:
Is the power button failure becoming common? I remember on my nexus one everybody used trackball wake and widgets to shut the screen off to prevent wear of the power button. I thankfully didn't experience any issues with my power button.

Samsung's power button are not so good. My Nexus S failed 1 day after warranty, normal use.
I'm afraid my Galaxy nexus will fail too so i'm going to install that volume wake mod to save a little power button.
For what i read, it is a common issue with Nexus S, and Galaxys.
On My HTC HD2, it never failed (2yrs), iphone is OK(3yrs) , no problem on my Motorola Defy either (2yrs). only the Samsung had problems

Works for wake fine. But with a totally dead/unresponsive power button I can only shut down via battery pull, and it reboots as soon as I reinstall battery. I have downloaded Quick Boot app and could use it to shut down, but if it works then I don't know how to turn device back on. Any ideas much appreciated. I've ordered a new power button flex cable and will probably attempt the replacement when it arrives if I can't find an acceptable solution.
I bought a replacement flex cable and attempted replacement on my Verizon LTE Gnex. Feedback below:
1) This video is an excellent aid. The instructions are clear, precise, and easy to follow. I was able to disassemble my phone without any problems following this.
2) The power button flex cable for the Verizon LTE version of the Gnex is not the same as the GSM (?) version in the video. It appears to be permanently attached. See photo below.
3) After I reassembled my phone, I took it to the local Verizon store to inquire about the cost of a replacement. I do not ever purchase insurance. I purchased my Gnex on launch day (mid December, 2011) so it is nearly 9 months old. Very nice customer sales associate told me that replacement would be shipped out for free since it's still covered under Samsung's warranty. Only thing I had to pay for was overnight shipping, $12. And yes, it's unlocked and rooted running CM10. But one can not turn it on.

That looks like it can be removed? Since if it was soldered on it should be closer to the board.

I am not sure if it could be removed, but I couldn't see any obvious disconnect. And I could not find a replacement flex cable for the LTE version from any vendors.

You CAN Remove it, its just a Clipflexcable. Push it Gently UP And it should come off easily.

Thanks, now is very easy replace the power button
is this common amongst ...
A specific batch like the Verizon version or the sprint version or everybody? I literally just got mine a month ago had I known this was a common problem I wouldn't have gotten the phone. Is it overtly presumptuous to assume that they would have addressed this by now?
Bump for info I'm sure someone else has the same question
I use volume rocker to wake, and software power button on aokp.

Thank you for the post. I managed to repear button the same way, now it works great.
Thanks for the guide.
I managed to fix my phone with it. For me this wasn't a problem until after I put a screen protector on my phone. My thoughts are that water gets inside the membrane and starts to rust the contact. If you look at the phone, the seam between the glass and the body can easily allow this to happen.

[Q] Side power button not as responsive.

Anyone had similar issues?
Over three weeks in, I am still blown away by this phone as I am finding new features everyday BUT I am also having difficulties with my power button. As I read in the Sprint forum, some time ago, it was noticed that the power button seemed loose, 'rocky' on a pivot. Other Note II demo phones had some flexibility with the power button as well. I haven't read about any problems with a lagging or unresponsive power (not home) button due to this but NOW it seems I have to press moderately-centered on the button to either wake or ZZZ the phone. Before it seemed I can press this button with as much force as the home button, even at an angle (Note II is wider after all). So my BIG question Have you ever pressed on the power button more than once to just wake up your phone? Or, put it to sleep? Do you have the press the button dead centered for it to work? And, does your power button seemed rocky, even slightly?
I am not rooted...running on good ole factory specs! My phone has never been dropped or damaged either. I would hate to send the phone to Samsung and be without one for 2 weeks, so I figured to troubleshoot with you guys first
Much thanks!

my phone did the samething within 3 days of when i got it. i just took mines back to at&t since it was so quick and the manager gave me a new one. hopefully someone does come up with a way to fix it without you having to send it yo samsung.
mine works flawlessly
Haven't noticed any issues with mine, but I suppose these kinds of issues are why I bought insurance.
My power button is 'rocky'; it seems to pivot from the center. However, I can press it anywhere to wake the phone or turn the screen off. There's a satisfying click when I do press it, so I'm not worried.
Same issue with my power button. Happened only a few days after I received mine as well.

Gathering the input so far, I think I might have to send this to Samsung to get it repaired since I passed my return/exchange period I have insurance but I am also under warranty with Sammy, so that route would be cheapest. Good thing I still have my old flip phone from 2005 that still works but going to dread going back 7 years though!
Lets hope that this doesn't become an eventual problem for most. Thanks for the comments so far.
Definitely take it back to repair it. My power button started off rocky and eventually became worse with use. I had to replace it. Get it fixed ASAP
got my first one replace with a new one due to same reason.
Mine works fine to turn off.
Turn on is a bit more picky.
Does not rock or is not loose.
I use home button to wake

Does anyone know what at&t's return period is offhand? I've got the exact same issue with my handset :/
Also, if I'm past that point, does Sammy charge for fixing the button?

I believe it used to be 30 days for personal accounts, now those terms only apply to corporate accounts. For personal accounts, its now 14 days. From what I understand, this policy covers items bought from a corporate AT&T store, or ordered direct from AT&T. You are allowed to exchange or return at a corporate store, with a possibility of a $35 restocking fee depending on the scenario. Also, you can also send it back to AT&T but you will have to cover shipping. I only suspect if you buy from a re-seller (aka a non-corporate AT&T store but clearly marked 'AT&T') you can exchange or return at a corporate store.
From what I was told by AT&T and a brief conversation with Samsung, the Note II carries a 1 year manufacture's warranty. I don't know the specifics, but assuming there is no abuse or damage of the phone caused by the user, and if the phone does not perform as it should (like mentioned in this thread), Samsung's warranty will cover it with no charge. But realize, unless you have a backup phone, you won't have a phone for 2 weeks! Also, there is a possibility that Samsung may use reconditioned parts, and if they can't fix your phone, you will get a reconditioned model But what if you have insurance? Then there is a deductible. A possibility of a reconditioned phone too?
Oh, what to do?
What is return period for premier accounts? Is it also 14 days?

Mine is the oppsite, it is too sensitive, not very tactile. I hit it accidentally all the time.
my power button just went wonky last night. it used to be somewhat rocky, but it was responsive. now it barely moves. i cant tell if im pressing it or not. it still powers on the phone. but there is no click or comfirming feeling at all. it might as well be capacitive now. about 40 days old.

[Q] Power button is hard to press

Is the power button hard to press for anyone else? I have to press it kind of hard and to get the correct angle at it when compared to my 2012 N7
I'm finding that to be the case as well. I'm thinking we'll get used to it as we start using the devices more.

I find that it helps if you "pinch" the side of the tablet with your thumb and forefinger. Since the button is angled back at 45 degrees, it needs to be pushed both forward (toward you) and left. Bracing your thumb on the front of the device (bezel) will help your index finger pull at this angle. But yeah even then it is finicky. Helps to make sure you push the button in the center exactly. A little too high or low and it doesn't click as well.

The only reliable way I've found to turn it on is to turn it face down and then press the button. I only seem to have problems when starting from a shutdown, not when just waking it up.

Same here. I put my thumb on the side of the display and my index finger on the power button and kinda push them together.
Definitely could have made it easier to press. Hate having to think about turning on my device. Oh well small issue for a great tablet.

If you hold it in landscape mode and turn it on, it seems fine. Maybe google wants people to use it in landcape (the sideways nexus logo). I have this problem too. Once kernels with double tap to wake and slide to wake, I don't think I'll ever use the power button.

Personally, I don't find it hard to press, it's just 5mm back of where i 'expected' it to be on the vertex. More usage will fix that.
I don't have a problem pressing it. Honestly, I think it fixes all the accidental times I pressed it on my first gen.

I feel its positioned at weird angle .
On my s4 you have to press from side at 90 degree ' where as on nexus 7 its kind of at 45 degree may be that's why it little weird . but its not a big deal , it will take few days to get use to it .

I'm surprised there is so little complaints of this design. It is one of my biggest issues with the new N7 - you pretty much have to pickup the tablet to press the volume or power buttons when it is laying on the table.
