Hi fellow XDA roamers,
As promised, I'll be doing a quick review of the Ringke - Fusion (Smoke Black) for Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone.
Here's the Amazon page : Fusion (Smoke Black)
And here's the official website (thanks to @sh4d0wf0x) : Rearth - Ringke Fusion
For some reason, I can't find any official website, not that I need one but sometimes it can help to make sure the product isn't coming from some cheap company.
After my desastrous experience with the CaseMate - Tough Case I was quite impatient to get this case, I even ordered it the morning I got the CaseMate.
I got it for a whopping 13 euros (there was a nice sale on it) instead of 30 and I received it in less than 4 days, another end of the year miracle !
Unboxing
When you receive this case, you know that your cash didn't went to the packaging, a simple translucent plastic bag with a pre-cut opening
The little bag contains the most basic accessories :
The case
A screen protector
A case template for cutting your own back image for the case
Yup, that's it... But who needs extras nowadays ?
At least everything is looking sharp and durable, this time the case fits perfectly the smartphone and doesn't leave any gaps.
It feels secure and looks nice altogether, I must say that this case is quite simple but does its job perfectly.
I haven't dropped my phone since then but I do think it will come unscathed.
A nice addition are little bumps on the back side of the case at each corners, so when the phone is placed on the back, the whole case isn't touching the surface and they're about 1 mm tall so they won't interfere with your hand.
As for the users who are wondering about the little USB hatch, it's still very easy to open (I don't have long nails) it and plug the power cord.
The only things that are going the wrong way are the back of the case that "stick" to the phone, sometimes you can see small succion marks but they can be removed with a simple pressure on the side of the case, and the other thing is that it attracts a lot of fingerprints... like a lot of cases...
The screen protections is like any other, nothing particulars about it, it's cut out for the speakers and led and it's mostly an expected thing from a phone case package.
Let's do a roundup !
The pros
Simple but still looks tough
Bumper protection has a nice rubber feel
Covers all the buttons and offer a little rubber cover for the headphone jack
Small bumps on the back
The cons
Small succion marks from the back of the case, the back of the case tends to suck to the back of the phone
Attracts fingerprints, grease marks & dust
Verdict
All in all, this case is living up to my expectations, looks simple but you can feel that the phone is protected and every little additions are welcome and useful.
This case clearly wipe away the bad taste that CaseMate left in my mouth, can't wait to receive the Orzly tempered glass to check if it all works together
Another review for you guys
Q&A
Anyone with the same case feeling the same as I do or I am missing something ?
is this the best case to get for the z3?
good review bro... can you take some pics of the case?
i think this is the official page www.rearthusa.com
thanks!

I don't know if it's the best case, for now I've only tried 2 of the available ones. There are a lot of other cases out there and it's quite possible that there's a better one.
I haven't found it yet

It looks like it's the official website, I'll update my review to add it. Thanks for that too
As for the pictures, I'll try to get some with a colleague's phone, won't be perfect but should be plenty enough for such a quick review.
The casemate tough has a much larger cutout on the magnetic charger side.
Do you think this case will be compatible with the OEM docks? (http://www.sony.com.au/product/dk-48)

I think it should be compatible but as I don't own one myself, I can't give you a clear confirmation
Maybe one of the other XDA users does have this combo and can confirm it works well ?
Quick poke around on the internet suggests it probably won't. Shttp://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/2n3seu/z3c_ringke_fusion_case_and_dk48_dock/)
I'm considering getting a z3c, but the community looks very sparse, and there's no actual usable roms. Is it even worth buying? :\

Too bad for the dock
As for buying it, I can't give your an objective feedback since it's my first Android phone ever but from my experience and the research I've done before jumping in, it's one of the best phone for this kind of size.
This little monster is compact, fast like it's bigger brother and even better looking than him. As for the Sony bloatwares, there are like 10 apps pre-installed, I'm not using most of them but they're not threatening my experience so it's ok for me.
For the custom ROM scarceness, it's linked with the DRM removal associated with unlocking the bootloader. As developers unlock more and more functionalities, more ROM will become available. If you want more informations about that, feel free to look around the General section of the forums.
I'm not very fond of custom ROM (I'm new to this) so for now I'll stick with the stock one.
Buying this phone is more of a love @ first sight and personal tastes, so it's mainly up to you to decide whether you will throw your cash at the screen or not.
Thanks for the insight.
Yeah it'd be my 6th Android phone, with my first being the very first Android phone (HTC Dream).
I've pretty much always used a custom rom with the exception of using rooted stock on the Nexus 5.
The hardware is what appealed to me as well, but it doesn't seem like the software is going to cut it just yet. S:
Just made friendship with my phone and before I bought it i ordered this case. Hope it will arrive soon so I can hopefully agree with your review.

I have a similar dock and without the insert mine charges fine with this case. I put a thin strip of velcro(the soft side) on the back edge where the phone rest instead of the insert.
I assume you're all using stock 4.4 then?

Sorry I'm still using the USB cable to charge it but I've already made my mind to buy the Magnector X2 magnetic charger when I have the money, maybe later this year.
I bought both the Ringke and the Cruizerlite. I wanted to like the Ringke, but the left side along the charging port and the sd card port is just way to loose. I can't help but think it would even get looser over time and use. My phone wears the Cruizerlite and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I would change about the Cruizerlite is to make a version with a plain back on it.

Thanks for the insight, it's true that the left side is loose, but I'm not really complaining since I only manipulate this side when I need to plug the USB cable.
For now the Ringke is more than enough for me, the Cruzerlite seems a little bit flimsy for me and the way it blocks the USB section is bothering me. Maybe when I'll have a magnetic charger I will try this one.
I probably should have mentioned that I use the magnetic desk charger and I pair my phone with my PC over WiFi for any transfers, therefore I have no need to access the usb port.

Its the best phone I have owned and the ONLY android phone that I haven't rooted. There is no need.
Sony Skin is VERY minimal and I like the Sony Apps including the Walkman and Album. Nova launcher and a Lollipop Theme (Via Sony's own theming engine) has produced a phone I have ZERO complaints with.
Also the battery really is epic, I use stamina mode and have full sync of gmail, exchange, messenger, whatsapp, the lot and easily leave work with 70-75%
My only complaint like others have is the camera, normal lights its fantastic but low light over cameras beat it.
Trust me this is a great phone. And Lollipop is coming next month.
Seriously just buy one.

Well, I can't be objective on this one but hell, I've already tried 3 or 4 devices under Android and not a single one came closer to it than the Samsung flagships but with added bulkiness.
Just click on that damn "Throw my cash at the screen" button
Hey!
Not a fan of cases, skins, or the like?
I have stumbled upon the best thing that fits inside the lump that protrudes from our lovely Nexus 5X's.
Paper Reinforcement Labels.
Those things we used once a long time in middle school now have a awesome purpose!
They fit inside the white lip perfectly and circle the camera module with grace.
When you stack three or more it creates a nice resting place for your phone.
Enjoy this little tip!
Let me know if you works for you!

Somewhere out there, an industrial designer is weeping... (No disrespect, if you're this concerned about protecting that area than there must be others that feel the same way.)
One would hope that it was designed to be durable from its inception, since it's quite clear that this area will likely receive many impacts over the course of the device's life, whenever the phone is put down without caution.
I hope Spigen produce one.

Wow. I certainly hope you're right and this was just a freak accident. According to the thread on reddit, it only dropped about 1m, from a table onto the floor...
This is just one report (albeit a concerning one) - and it's still far too early to gauge if there is an issue here. At this time all we can do is wait and see (and try not to drop our phones).
On the subject of cases, bumpers, etc. I'm with the minority of those who go without - I like to use the device as it was designed. While I can appreciate the protective benefits a casing may offer, it's always visually apparent when there's a case on, (even the clearest/thinnest ones), and there is always some increase in size when it comes to handling, no matter how minimal. With the elephantine devices we have today, the 'bare' phones are big enough already. The 5X should have had much smaller top & bottom bezels, there's no need for it to be this tall. I wouldn't resent the large phones so much, but there are very few, if any, decent options for those of us who prefer smaller (around 5.2") phones.
I do use pouches/sleeves, but of course the phones are exposed when I'm actually using them, or if they're sitting on a table outside of their pouch. Over the course of a few years, I have accidentally dropped my phones a few times (Galaxy Nexus & Oneplus One, not the 5X thus far), and they have never received anything more than a few scuffs & minor scratches, of course their camera housings didn't protrude as far as that of the 5X.
Personally, I won't be concerned about the durability of the camera or the device in general until it's clear that there's an issue.

I got my phone for 200 bucks so what i'm saying next is with the price in mind:
To be honest, with the included cover the scratch issue is not that big of a deal
The bend test is an over kill. just don't sit on your phone.
This phone rocks for the price. (I'll say better than my galaxy s7) The only thing i miss is the faster lens on the s7.
The people who take JerryRigEverything's "durability tests" seriously are simply put, dumb. The videos he make are for pure entertainment purpose. Who lights up their phone's screen with a lighter? Are there still people who wouldn't protect their screen with a protector anyway? And seriously who the heck tries to bend their phone in half even if you're a rough user. Dumbness is taking over the people.
I own Honor 6X from about a month, I have about 10 hours SoT daily on my phone. With that kinda usage, I have 0 scratches so on my screen or back so far. And of course no freakin "bends" like it's a metal ruler lol.

There's no excuse for the s-h-i-tty glass used on the Honor 6x. None of the 50 phones he tested had the glass scratch at level 3 or 4. While I somewhat agree with the bending thing, the glass they used on this phone is pure crap.

It's not really about buying a screen protector or not. It's about the inferior quality of the glass Huawei chose to use on this device. It's the worst ever tested out of 50 phones and it's worse than last years 5x. I literally have a drawer full of phones and this is the first test that actually persuaded me to go out and buy a tempered glass screen protector. I never have felt the need before and the screens on all of my devices are still pristine.

AGREE I DON'T TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY TOO.
But, you need to admit the fact that what ever be the day to day use of a device
there is that one day where things are not in your favor and S#!t Happens.
So, understanding the worst case scenario is not a crime but a reminder what you should expect rather.
CONSIDER:
In my **** day i accidentally drop my phone on the street while getting of a bus in INDIA and a car runs over it
now since JERRY DOES A BEND TEST BOTH THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE PHONE you will have an idea of what kind of damage you should be expecting and
if you should dive in to push your phone away
or
let it be it can handle a car running over it
and
i can get it back with no problem

Why argue and waste time rather lets just ask "jerry rigs everything" to throw a google pixel and an Honor 6x under a car. Or lets do it by ourselves but someone will will need to sponsor you to get a free phone to break so yeah we cant pretty much do that can we. HONOR aint sending us a free phone anytime soon so lets see what people do when they get a free one like jerry who practically breaks the phone.
THEN WHY DO I WANT THIS ARGUMENT TO CONTINUE ?
Because my SAMSUNG E500H could manage drops like i dropped it while trying to get a clear snapchat post in a DJ snake concert it practically was being run over by people but it survived with a crack on the digitizer and leaving the LCD un harmed.
Now my HTC 526g+ that had a crappy but decent tempered glass on broke in a simple fall when i missed my pockets and drooped the phone in the METRO.
I have been a person with slippery hands when it comes to phones so it helps me know
like if i got an IPHONE 4s ill cover it in a pillow
if its an OBI WORLDPHONE i will first recollect when was Android 4.4.4 awesome and re-evaluate life's decisions.
if its an honor 6x ill buy a higher quality TEMPERED GLASS and a decent quality PROTECTIVE CASE.
( METAL BODY ALLOWS FOR SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE INTAKE ).
if it is an GOOGLE PIXEL then i can call F U C K IT and throw it screen side down under a car phones internal will be safe but screen might break.

Im not sure if you are trolling or serious. Let me tell you something, a phone dropped is not similar to a car running it over. Also ive had 4 phones since the last 5 years, first was a blackberry which screen cracked from a simple fall on the street. Second was my galaxy s3 which is still in good condition despite it falling over a million times, and not to mention i still use it from time to time until this day. My newer galaxy s6 which i had a case and a tampered glass protector got its screen fully broken when it fell less than a meter high. Should we now say that samsung flagship device is really good quality (ex s3) or very bad (ex s6)? The truth is its all about how the phone fell, the angle, the type of surface there are too many variables. Now im using my honor 6x without any cover and it is still as brand new. Even though it fell maybe 2 times it still doesnt have a scratch. So chill with these videos they are nothing scientific and only for entertainment

Wouldn't that leave a giant variable for people who want to solve problems related to the exact matter if i consider the angle surface, ETC on which my phone drops and breaks.
I can only test my phone by droping it from a height and then fixing problems right and if we do this process over and over again we get a durable phone right.
SADLY, companies cannot spend that much on just making test models and break them over and over again to make a durable phone that costs more than a kidney
ALSO
Droping an object is not a standardized test and cannot be repeated without minimum human error.

You're right, i wanna get a glass screen protector on top of the plastic one included but I'm too lazy, regardless it's still great for the price range.
Looking to truly make my phone waterproof but usable for the times I'm kayaking or playing near the water. I use off brand cases before with my LG and they worked great. Poetic made one but now the OP7 pro seems to have ZERO support for waterproof cases as of yet. Anyone see one or have anything? No not a plastic zip lock bag.

I looked at those it's the first thing that comes up when you Google waterproof case for this phone but please let me know where it actually shows being completely sealed and "waterproof" cause truly they don't show that at all.
I would love one too, but I think due to the pop up selfie camera it isn't possible to make one fully waterproof. (well I guess they could build out a pop area that is always there and the camera pops up and down. This pop up camera is a nice way to solve the cut out/bezel issue but really prevents case designers from making one that completely seals the phone.

I could care less about the pop up camera while I'm in areas that I would like to use a waterproof case truly. But I do see your point but it's still the users option to use it or not
If Kayaking seal it in a zip lock bag, or one of those special waterproof bags marketed for stuff like waters ports especially scuba diving.
Do they make waterproof fanny packs?
I guess if I was playing near water I probably just wouldn't have my phone on me at all?
Might come across as unhelpful, or bad attitude, but that really isn't my intent. If you gotta have your phone with you in dangerous watery situations, the 7P doesn't seem like the right phone?
There are YouTube videos (or at least one) that show a 7P being dropped in a glass of water and living. I've also read Oneplus put it through to paces for the certification, but didn't pay for the certification. Suggesting it does better than seems logical with that camera.
Maybe you could get a case that otherwise seems right for your activities, and use some waterproof RTV to seal the camera hole in the case? They make it in many colors, including clear, black, and grey, so it might blend in. It would eliminate the selfie cam while in case but you said that doesn't bother you.
Hi everyone,
Long story short I am thinking of yet again giving Samsung another chance by switching from my 12 pro max to the fold 3 but have a few concerns.
can anyone advise on how durable the internal display is in regards to dust getting trapped in between when folded and getting scratched? I’ve been in the whole apple ecosystem for a very long time and built quality is important to me and so wanted to see what everyone’s experience has been with theirs so far.
thanks in advance
Dust per se no. Any sand oh yes.
If you're leaving your happy Apple world, take the whole Android trip and get a Samsung with an SD card* slot. A native spen is also very useful.
The Note 10+ (my top choice still) and the Note 20 Ultra are better, more durable and useful devices in my opinion.
You'll want a pair of Buds+ too. To make full use of the native SCC bluetooth codec.
*use as a dedicated data drive. All critical data and backups go here. Only the loaded apps and the temporary download folder go on internal memory. The DCIM folder files are then backed up to the data drive weekly etc. Do not name that folder DCIM though. You then redundantly backup you SD card to at least 2 hdds.
A V30 rated 1tb card can be had now for $180. Fast enough to playback vids and music with zero issues.
Complete reloads can be done from the SD card too, no need for a PC, cloud or any external sources.
Something no Apple can do... don't sell yourself short!

What is the last Samsung device you owned?
As far as the Fold2 and 3, great devices. The inner display is soft and you have to plan accordingly. In my experience, the Fold2's display was more prone to the micro scratches and finger nail gouges. The screen also collected lots of finger oils and almost felt like a resistive touch screen. The Fold3's screen feels more like glass and I am very pleased with it. I don't baby my phones. They've lived in my jean pocket, suit jackets, etc. Dust will definitely find its way on the phone and like any other device, easily wipes off.
I got bored with the Note line after owning every model since its third iteration and went with the Fold. Never going back especially now with S pen compatibility. It is the perfect size for multitasking, web browsing, YT, etc. When closed, perfect for quick phone interactions.

It sounds like your question may assume the two sides of the screen lay flat on top of one another, which would indeed be a good case for dust to cause scratches. Luckily, the two screens have a level of separation through the whole span and the only points of contact are very small rubber stand-off's at the top and bottom of the right hand side. Unless there are very large pieces of debris, you should not be concerned with things scratching the screen while closed.

Buds+ are great and what I use at the gym. But if you want better audio go with wireless buds with LDAC or use a USB DAC or bluetooth headphone amp with LDAC like the ES100 or BTR5.
The screen halves don't touch when folded. The only way it will scratch when folded is if a large piece of debris gets stuck between. Also, you can add a case which further increases the space between screens when folded.

The last Samsung phone I owned was the note 9 I think for about a month then pre ordered the 10+ and then I just went back to Apple. I walked away from apple back then and unfortunately they did cost me a lot of money in the long run but I feel like the fold is calling my name. Just need to figure out what to do with the two sets of AirPods I have and the Apple Watch which I use on a daily basis.

I'm still not seeing any LDAC buds near that price range. It's always a crap shoot on how well they will fit/seal.
What the exact clearance gap? Can you compress it beyond that? Real bad things can happen in pocket.
I always wear bdu pants and keep my 10+ in a cargo pocket. This has worked very well in conjunction with a robust case. You can protect a 10+ extremely well with a little effort. Mine has survived in the desert with no scratches for almost 2 years.

There are a few LDAC buds out there like the Soundcore Liberty Pro 2, Hiby WH2, many Sonys. Check drop.com. There are more options with aptx.
I use the Samsung silicone case and it adds maybe 1mm when closed. Only the edges of the case touch when closed. The case is pretty stiff, you have to press hard to make it compress.

I loved my 9 and 10 Plus. Both were unlocked, both were blue. My 9 had 512 of storage. Such a great phone... You'll be back at home with the Fold3 + spen. As far as the iPhone add ons, I'm sure you'll find a buyer for them and replace them from what Samsung has to offer. Apples ecosystem is very robust. I feel Samsung's is a close second.
All of my children have i devices and corresponding accessories. My wife and I have been Samsung users for quite some time. We only have earbuds. I use to have a watch but hated having to charge my work laptop, work phone, personal phone and my watch. I also prefer the heft and look of my actual watches, so. My wife has the buds, I have the beans aka live. I like how they sit in my ear, dislike anything lodged in (despite the better noise cancelation and sound). Good luck with your decision either way.
Lastly, folding and unfolding never gets old. I still feel the same way today as I did as when I folded my Fold2 last year for the very first time. Love my Fold3, never going back to anything prior.

Only LDAC is equal or better than SSC from the available bt codecs. So there's that.
This phone is durable, especially the inner screen.
