I've got a Virgin Mobile Samsung S II.
I followed this guide to root my phone on my macbook. Following it exactly gave me this error message in terminal: ERROR: Partition "kernel" does not exist in the specified PIT.
After thorough reading of the old root guide thread, I thought it was a case sensitivity issue since I was using a newer version of Heimdall. In terminal, I entered: heimdall flash --KERNEL zImage to start the process rather than all lowercase "kernel."
Now my phone won't boot beyond the startup screen that says "Samsung GALAXY S II" with a yellow error triangle. Can anyone please help? I know very little about these things, so the simpler the answers, the better -- any and all would be greatly appreciated.
If it's helpful, here is what the terminal screen displayed:

I can boot to ClockWork Mod Recovery. Which I believe means that something took, because that's not something that would be on the phone otherwise, right? I tried using it to wipe the cache and dalavik cache, but it didn't work.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but how can I flash a ROM? If I can only load the download and CWM screens, is there still a way to get a ROM onto the phone to flash it?
Thanks for the reply!
@monsieurblue .. might be that kernel you flashed isn't compatible with the rom you're running. Try a different kernel that you now is compatible.

OK. Maybe the problem is that I'm not running a ROM right now? I was on the stock 4.1 that came on the phone when I bought it before this process. Now that I'm done this kernel thing, do I need to flash a ROM before the phone will boot up?
I can mount the phone with CWM to add/remove files from my computer. Can I add a .zip of a rom to install that way?

Because you now have a custom recovery ( I think ) you can use adb or something to get a rom on the phone.. I'm not sure as I've never looked into it, but I will.. hang tight. Also I think you can use heimdall to flash a rom.. right.

Yep.. that's what I thought.. just make sure you flash the rom correctly. A lot of the roms require you to flash from el26 or el29 direct boot kernel's. Since you can't boot, el29 is out. But you can put the rom of choice and gapps and el26 kernel on sdcard. Then wipe data, cache, dalvik. Then flash el26.after the flash go to advanced and pick reboot recovery. This will boot you back to recovery but the el26 recovery. Then flash rom.. then flash gapps.. you might want to wipe data, cache, dalvik again to be sure. You can also go to mount and format system.. only system... this will ensure a super clean flash..

This is incredibly helpful; thank you so much.
I'm sorry for the ignorance, but can you explain to me what el26 is, and what ROM I should flash? When I started this process, I wanted to install this one, but there are warnings saying not to install on a Jelly Bean Modem and I don't know what else to use or how to install on a different modem.
And just to make sure I understand, when you say "flash" el26, that means it's a .zip that will be on my sdcard, which I install by using the "install zip from sdcard" option on CWM, right?
Thanks again!

Ok.. I can't find a zip file for el26 or el29..you can go about this by getting one of these recoveries. They are in rwilco's repo..el26 is at the top of the page.. don't get a stock one.. lol. As it will have stock recovery. Get the. Tar version of the file and use heimdall to flash it and then proceed with flashing rom, gapps.. but I don't know how heimdall works, I'm a windows man. Or you could flash a rom with heimdall.. Or yet another way is to try to flash the rom from that recovery you have.. I'm not sure about it.. if I was you I would download the tar el26 kernel and a JB rom based on touchwiz from Android development thread and the gapps.. put the rom and gapps on sdcard. Then figure out a way to flash the tar el26 with heimdall..
Yes.. flash means install... and the modem thing is because CM/AOSP/AOKP roms need an ICS modem to get data working. That why I suggested the JB touchwiz rom.. it will work with the modem you have. I'm assuming it's gb27modem(jb modem)..

Cool! So I download the el26 .zip and put that onto my sdcard, then flashed it. Now, what ROM and Gapps should I put on there as well before following the rest of your plan and booting the whole thing up? My intention was to install something with Jelly Bean 4.2.2, but now that I'm all turned around, I'm not sure what the best ROM for that is.
@monsieurblue ..
After you have the kernel on you sdcard(not in a folder). And you have the rom/gapps you want.... wipe cache and dalvik cache(under advanced). Then click install from sdcard. Pick install from internel.. just thought you might have been able to put it on ext.sdcard.Anyway,go to el26 zip file and install. After install is done. Go to advanced and pick reboot recovery and phone will boot to the el26 recovery(you might have to push volume up.. volume down.. volume up) to get you're power button to work as the select button. It's like that on el29..
Now wipe data, cache, dalvik.. then flash rom. After it's done flash the gapps the rom op thread suggested. If all goes well after this.. you can reboot..
I think this will get ya home.. Let me know.

Ha, it's no problem! I'm just glad for the help. I think I've got the hang of what to do once I've got the ROM/Gapps picked out, I just don't know which one to pick out. Which do you mean when you say the ones OP thread suggested? The "Liquid Smooth" one I linked to in my thread starter is what I want, but since I haven't changed my modem, I think it will harm the phone (it says in the instructions not to install on a Jelly Bean modem, which is what I believe I have right now).
Just saw your recommendation for project X and paradoX -- I'll check them out now, thanks!
If you dead set on 4.2.2...I love slimbean4.2...4.3 has no 4g. Also you will need slimgapps for slimbean as it boots at 182 dpi for the screen size. You can also use the lz kernel in the slimbean thread.. But I would stick to touchwiz until you get you're feet wet,, lol..Because flashing slim or other cm/aosp/aokp roms will require the ICS modem flash and then a temp boot flash to update you prl and profile.. You can boot a tw rom tonight then tomorrow get mobile Odin and flash an ICS modem(FL24 is the newest)then update prl and profile. After this you could use el29 direct boot kernel to flash any cm/aosp/aokp rom you want.. and have data.. wheww.. lol. Let me know if you need a guide for mobile Odin. I wrote a little one up here in q and a.. awhile back.

That's cool.. flash it tomorrow. After we get ya back up.. and about the op.. sometimes rom Devs will suggest you flash a certain gapps pkg.
FYI.. it won't hurt you're phone.. you just won't have data.. also you know you will have to change you're APN settings to get mms working.. unless you're on sprint.. I'm a boost boy.
You could flash the one you want. Then get an ICS modem and flash it in recovery.. wipe cache/dalvik..flash modem.. reboot. But you're signal might be buggy without the prl update.. and you can't update prl's from cm/aosp/aokp roms.. as of yet..

This is incredible, it worked! Thank you so much!
My concern now is getting to a ROM that I like -- this Project X one is good as a temporary measure, but I really want something that's 4.2.2 and highly customizable (and, most importantly, able to be installed from a mac).
@Gil81
Last question, I promise! To install Slimbean 4.2, which you recommended, it looks like I can follow this guide. Only problem is the Odin One-Click ICS Root: I can't follow those instructions because they're exclusive to Windows and I'm on a Mac. Any idea on how to install Slimbean 4.2 onto my device from where I am now? And do I need to change the modem, like you mentioned earlier?

alright...youre back up...good job man...:good:
ALWAYS...I MEAN...ALWAYS FOLLOW THE INSTALL DIRECTIONS IN THE ROM'S THREAD...:fingers-crossed:..
That being said..now that youre up and running follow the guide i linked to in the above post...its a mobile odin guide for flashing roms on our phone..it will work will almost all roms. it is how i have flashed every rom but a couple one-clicks..
BUT BEFORE YOU GO TO THAT LINK....download fl24 or another ics modem and flash it in recovery on the rom you have now..after the flash and you reboot back to the rom..update the prl and profile. just remember after you do this you wont have data....but it is the right modem for slimbean or the rom you really wanted..FYI..the mobile odin guide will work for that rom you first wanted...just follow the links in it and the directions to the letter...it is a proven way to flash...
Dont worry about the ics one-click...i never have any problems..if you do. you can always go back and just completely wipe youre phone and sdcard. then use heimdall to flash the rom.. the one click just clean slates youre phone and changes the partitions...i believe heimdall would do the same if you where to use it to flash..but i think youll be fine..
@Gil81
Awesome, I'm going to follow this exactly later tonight! Thanks again for all of the help!
In the guide you linked to, you say:
First...you will need to get all the needed files( ROM, Gapps( for the rom you pick ),EL29 direct boot kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1662295 ..this is the link to rwilcos repo..scroll down to gb-touch wiz based kernels. Then look for EL 29 direct boot/tar.. You will need the tar.md5 format. Place this tar and the ROM and Gapps on the root of you're internal sdcard( not in a folder ).

when you follow thw link...it will take you to rwilco's repo.. Scroll down the page (almost to the bottom of the kernel listings)and you will see a link for the el29 direct boot kernel..get the tar version because you will be using mobile odin..The el29 direct boot kernel is a safe gingerbread kernel we use to flash roms(it will not boot up on the rom youre flashing)..
you see..we just use that kernel and recovery to flash...once you flash the rom it will install the kernel made to run with that rom. Our recovery is funny on this phone...it is part of the kernel, thats why we use that kernel to flash..it is safe and has a safe recovery..
I just prefer el29 direct boot ( instead of el26 ) because when you flash it with mobile odin it will boot straight to recovery for you...no pulling the battery and then putting it back in and holding power button and volume up to get to recovery....
remember to get the slim gapps for 4.2...and after you get slim bean booted up and let it settle in for a few hours...you can flash the lighning kernel for slimbean linked in the slimbean thread...to flash it you just boot to recovery...wipe cache and dalvik and install it..then reboot..:good:...it is really the only tweak i run with slimbean..great battery life..
if you need any help...dont hesitate to ask...thats what xda is all about...Good Luck.

I also seen a new kernel thread in the original development thread...blasphamy kernel..i think.. You could also try it..Just remember to make a backup before going flashy crazy..so if things go side ways, you can get back to where you sarted...

I've hit a roadblock! I was following this list I made based on your instructions:
MODEM
1. Add FL24.zip to sdcard and flash in recovery.
2. Reboot.
3. Update the PRL and profile.
ROM
1. Place ROM, Gapps, and EL29 boot kernel on the sdcard.
2. Open mobile odin > kernel > internal sdcard > EL29 direct boot kernel > flash firmware > check md5 > flash
3. Once in recovery, push volume up, volume down, volume up (this will make the power button the enter button)
4. Wipe data
5. Wipe cache
6. Wipe dalvik cache
7. Mounts/storage > format system (only system)
8. Install from internal sdcard > ROM zip file
9. Install from internal sdcard > Gapps
10. Reboot
I finished step 2 on ROM, then the system restarted and the phone didn't boot past the "Samsung GALAXY SII" screen. When I hold the power and volume up buttons to get into recovery, it goes into a recovery screen that says "Android system recover <3e>" at the top. I have four options:
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
I wiped the data and cache based on your instructions, but there's no option to wipe the davlik cache, and when I go to "apply update from sdcard" it says: E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)

That's because you got the el29 kernel...not the el29 direct boot kernel....you just flashed a stock kernel that will not boot with anything but a gingerbread rom...
i think i warned you about that...now you will need to heimdall a recovery back on to the phone...

Having the same issue
epic touch (loading starburst rom) shows the galaxy S boot like it should, then the screen seems to just go blakc, doesnt go into a boot cycle. I formatted the system , wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik , in that order.
My procedure. Load odin, wipe the current zedomax kernal.tar with the root.
Root works great. Then flash the 6.1 zedo max ( for CM5 ). After that, i try to flash the staburst rom and it wont boot back up. i tried using the Lost kernal too.
I'm familiar with recovering it, so i'm able to get back to my backup and unroot the device no problem, just need help fixing the root. On my old EPIC, i had to do the one click root my self, then roms would load fine. please help!

Im having the same issue... i tried the starburst rom and once past the boot animation it goes black so i booted into recovery and tried to restore my nand and it isnt there like it was wiped during rom install... ok so after that i stayed in recorery downloaded the latest viper rom, flashed and the same thing happened.. i wiped\factory reset wiped dcache and cache every time i try a new rom... PLEASE HELP i just bought this phone from a freind and decided to root and now i cant even make my first call on it...
1. Boot into CWM recovery and make a Nandroid backup.
2. Format system under mounts and storage.
3. Wipe data/factory reset.
4. Wipe cache partition.
5. Wipe Dalvik cache under advanced.
6. Install StarburstROM. IF COMING FROM 1.8 YOU MUST FOLLOW THE ABOVE STEPS EACH TIME THEN INSTALL 1.9. THEN DO THE SAME AND INSTALL 1.9.5.
7. Wiping data may not be necessary but I would do it anyways then reboot, let it run for a few minutes, boot back into CWM and from the advanced restore menu restore just your data from the Nandriod backup you made.

Your Nandroid is still there it's just on your internal SD card. If you were using a kernel with an early version of CWM it backed up to the internal SD card. The latest version the dev's are incorporating into their ROMs now backs up to the external SD card. Just Odin back to whatever previous ROM/kernel you were on then boot up and copy the Clockwork folder to your external SD card. Then follow the directions I posted above for flashing StarburstROM.

Edit... I just check my external and it has a clock work folder on it.. The only thing in it is a file named ".salted_hash" and that's it..

Bummer man. Not sure how that happened unless you formatted your SD card accidentally.

well i finally got my starburst rom working... but why does the media not. i cant play music, veiw pictures, or play videos.
Is that v1.9.5? If so what version did you upgrade from? People are having some problems when upgrading to 1.9.5.
Same issue. Tried multiple times, followed instructions to a T. Phone just goes black after flashing Starburst. Now I can only go to recovery or download mode. I couldn't install my nandroid backup (don't know why, based on filename it seemed like an old one from a different phone, not the one I did today).
Trying to go back to stock following
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1274337
but I'm on a MAC, and can't figure out how to heimdall a ROM. I can flash a kernel using heimdall, but don't know the commands and flashing order for the stockEG30.tar in terminal using heimdall. I also downloaded the frontend suites for heimdall, but can't figure out where to place stockeg30.tar files.
Any help? I have no windows machines.
in order to install starburst v1.9.5 you must have v1.9 installed first (recommended w/ flashing zedomax kernal or lost kernal in CWM after reboot), make sure phone is rooted properly and CWM is installed if not already (can be done via download mode w/ odin)
download v1.9 here:
http://dev-host.org/z1jsf3k9lh44/stable_epic_starburst_10.27.11_v1.9_.zip
to get this on your sdcard you will have to mount through usb on cwm via mounts and storage and connect to your pc
follow rom flash instructions as usual in cwm:
format system through mounts and storage
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik through advanced
install zip from sdcard
reboot
wait a few minutes booted
then set up your phone
next flash/install either zedomax kernal or LOSt kernal via CWM
forums and downloads found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1284
wipe cache and dalvik before for flashing through cwm
reboot
next download v1.9.5 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276320
make sure it is saved to the root of your sdcard from which you want to install
next all you have to do is flash v1.9.5 over v1.9
do not format system
do not wipe data
do not wipe cache
do not wipe dalvik
install from sdcard
reboot
video to flash v1.9.5 found here found here:

So I got a little too excited when I heard the CM9 nightly went up, and the fact some sources were saying ICS wasn't going to come out until July didn't help.
I followed the instructions in the thread, but due to a failure with the stock SD card. It didn't work. Now my phone is stuck on the LG logo.
Except when I got a new card, I was able to go into CWM recovery and flash CM9 again. (other ROMs won't seem to flash, the screen is blank. I didn't disable any apps)
But the flash is very corrupted. Everything is sluggish/non-responsive. (no matter what I do, changing the performance, new launcher, etc.)
I just want to go back to a stock ROM. I regret getting involved without spending a little more time and now my work is affected due to my phone not working.
What do I do to go back? Nothing else will flash properly. I just want to get rid of CWM, CM9, root, everything. I need my phone back. Sorry for sounding whiny, I've been trying to figure it out without having to clutter the board but I'm at my wits end.
Thanks for reading my wall of text, and your time. Please help.

Before installing stock based roms in CWM you must return stock boot partition ( http://www.fileserve.com/file/85qrGE9 ).
For now you must:
1) intstall CM9 again with all possible wipes.
2) boot into CM9
3) copy boot.img downloaded by link above to sdcard
4) in terminal emulator type:
su
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8
Click to collapse
5) reboot in CWM and install custom firmware (kernelpanic or hono) with all wipes (cache\system\data\dalwik cache)
6) profit
---------- Post added at 05:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:47 PM ----------
If you want to return to full at&t stock you need to do few more steps... But I think you wouldn't
Hey, thanks for the easy instructions, I got everything to work but the ROMs are still unstable. Although the kernalpanic ROM has less issues. I really think it's a corrupted CWM recovery flash, and the OS has just gone to **** from all the flashing, reflash, hard factory reset, etc. Not sure, just a naive theory.
To be honest, I'm more than willing to take the extra steps to bring this back to stock. Been crawling the forums for a stock ROM but the links are broken and even if I do obtain it. I wouldn't know what to do with it.
Recently I just download a 1GB file called Unbrick from a forum member's dropbox, seems to have all the stock files but I'm lost from there.
EDIT:
Good news, I was able to revert everything and it seems everythings back to normal. I basically took your terminal instructions and did it to all the other stock .img and hoped for the best.

Yep, it's the only way back to fully stock right now. Don't forget to do factory reset by pressing volup+power while switching on if you flashed default recovery.img too.

Also, to the OP, did you have LTE after you went back to stock from CM9?
i'm restoring my original at&t rom to see if i still have lte with it. brb.........
Ok I looked all over the place and I could find anything about this issue. I have the telus s2x t989d and I went on rom manager and downloaded cyanogenmod 9 for my phone( only one available). Then I went in to install it and when it finished it just stayed on the really cool cyanogen boot screen and I had to power off and restore. Ive tried it a few times and nothing changed. I wiped the cache and stuff too. what should I do?
Are you trying to lead it directly from the app or are you trying to flash from recovery? Rom manager is buggy on the t989/t989D series. Flashing from an app is not recommended AT ALL due to potential of bricking the device
I guess my question is, what's your exact process you took...(i.e. steps taken)

its recommended to simply download the rom zip the boot into recovery and install there. I use cm9 stable with tdj Darkside kernel 6 and flash everything through twrp recovery never had a single boot loop in any room I've flashed. What rom are you running currently?
1.Download rom and place in external sd card.
2. Reboot into recovery
(You may want to wipe data/factory reset depending on what rom you are running and clean install are typically recommended unless coming from a previous version from same developer (i.e. cm, aokp, etc)
3. Flash darkside super wipe and cache wipe if using cwm non touch
4. Flash rom, gapps and kernel (if so desired on the gapps and kernel)
5. Reboot and wait 10mins
6. Reboot again and have fun!
Let me know if that helps

So I should just find the rom on my computer instead then?
Im downloading cyamogenmod 9 now from their website. I guess rom manager is pretty much useless for me then? I liked it because it would only show me roms that work for my phone so I dont make any mistakes.

You need to have a recovery flashed to your phone to even start the root process. Cwm, cwm touch, or twrp. All are available in the sticky section as well as development section. If you are running stock recovery then that's your primary issue.

Yes, the only difference between T-Mobile and Telus versions is cosmetic. Telus is the T989D, T-Mobile is the T989. There is a reason why they are so closely named.

oh ya I have CWM recovery flashed so im good in that department. Im going to try out darkside superwipe now and see if that helps.
well I used darkside and then flashed my rom. Now it wont even go past the telus loading screen... Ive restored back again. I made it alot farther than this with rom manager haha. I actually saw the cyanogenmod opening cinematic... Ill try the darkside cache wipe this time and see if that helps. I downloaded the rom right from the cyanogen website...
Well neither is working. It just stays in the Telus loading screen. Not even the Samsung screen will load. I don't know what else to do...

So I've followed all the steps from QBKing77. I:
1) rooted my phone
2) put FI03 on it
3) put agat on it
4) put both files (the rom itself and the caulkin file)
but every time I install the rom, my phone boots up normally, then goes into Kuban (I think thats how you spell it) recovery. What could be the problem?!
If anyone knows the answer, I would greatly appreciate an answer
Why don't you just root, download clockwork mod from play store, go to a gingerbread rom. Make sure you have a clean download (downloaded through pc or wifi) of the rom you want to use and follow the op instruction which is usually, going into recovery, formatting cache, dalvik, and factory reset then flash desired ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Kuban recovery is what is built into that ROM.
Flash ROM
Then reboot
make sure all is OK.
boot to recovery then install Agat's kernel if you wish.
Both Agat's 5.4 andd rujelus22's kernels are built from source.
Seriously, take some time and read through the forum's for ROMs, Q&A etc. You will find the answers you are looking for and quite possibly save yourself from making an expensive paper weight.

OH and DON"T download clockworkmod from the Play store! [ROM Manager]
If you use it you will likely BRICK your phone!
I flashed a new ROM after an annoying bug from the previous ROM,then I installed some applications (including busybox),restarted it without problems, but after the next restart it was bootlooping (I don't know why,I didn't installed any other application after the first restart).I did a factory reset,I wiped the data, cache, dalvik cache, but it was still bootlooping.I wiped it again and I tried to flash another ROM (and yes, they were all compatible with my phone, and I respected the instructions,I flashed a lot of ROMs before),but, again,it was bootlooping.I wiped it one more time, and I performed a nandroid restore (from another ROM),but it was still bootlooping.WTF?I have never experienced a thing like this.Should I try to flash a ROM (stock,GioPro) with Odin? What if it would still bootloop? What should I do?
BTW:I don't know if this is important, but before I preformed the nandroid restore,I accidentally made a backup (it was made very fast),and I noticed that the date was messed up(showing year 1970).It says that it has only 16mb and the only folder existing in /system is lost+found. However,I can see my boot animation

I didn't.I installed the same apps that I had before it was bricked.I will try again without installing any app.
EDIT:I followed the same instructions more than once (tried to wipe everything),tried 3-4 different ROMs but it's still bootlooping. Also,I noticed the following error in CWM "can't format unknown volume /emmc".I think I should buy a new phone,lol...
There's Still Hope!!!
