Since DooMLoRD has stopped the development of his great DooMKernel for the Xperia ZL, and after his permission, I'm proud to announce
UNOFFICIAL EXPERIMENTAL DooMKernel for the Xperia ZL
This is fully based on his original kernel sources at https://github.com/DooMLoRD/android_kernel_sony_apq8064
So, THANKS @DooMLoRD for his awesome job and for letting me build this unofficial release. Please, DO NOT REPORT BUGS IN THIS RELEASE TO DooMLoRD, since this is an UNOFFICIAL and UNSUPPORTED release.
This is an EXPERIMENTAL BUILD which has the following changes over the original one I posted on the other thread:
Built with Linaro GCC 4.7, custom compiled with optimizations for arm-cortex_a15
Compiled with speed optimizations (gcc -O2)
Removed profiling settings (slightly lighter footprint)
Removed debugging settings (slightly lighter footprint)
And other kernel options tweaks
It feels a little snappier to me, although there are no big changes in benchmark tools like AnTuTu (as you should know, benchmarks are not good for measuring the "real-world" user experience). I've been testing these builds for several days now, and haven't found any issues. But YMMV, report any issues you find with this experimental build that are absent in the original build (so I know it's related to this build).
You can follow the original thread for current DooMKernel at the Xperia Z forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2172888. There you will find all the features of the current release, and discuss specific issues specific to this kernel.
The releases are for STOCK JELLYBEAN 4.2.2 firmwares. Currently tested only on 10.3.1.A.0.244.
>>>>>>>> Download EXP v13r2 for Xperia ZL: ZL-UNOFFICIAL-EXP-DooMKernel-v13r2.zip - 7.33 MB (build date Sep-03-2013)
General instructions and recommendations
As with previous releases, to install this kernel simply flash the zipfile in recovery.
MY RELEASE DOES NOT INCLUDE RECOVERY. You can use XZDualRecovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606 from @[NUT].
I recommend you first BACKUP THE FOLLOWING DIRECTORIES:
Code:
/system/etc/firmware/wlan/prima
/system/lib/modules
Because the kernel includes new WLAN firmware and modules, and in case you want to go back to stock kernel, you can just flash the old kernel and restore your backups.
Been working great for me since release.

2 threads for one kernel? I'm sure if you combinate the experimental and release thread it's much better for orientation. People don't have to grab in 2 threads to find things they want.
Anyway thanks for your work to keep our zl up to date!

Well indeed this is something I considered when posting this experimental build. It has its pros and cons. I went with the option of creating a new thread to avoid cluttering the original one and possibly confusing users with so much information in one place (most users don't fully read a long OP). Since this is a different build which should take much less attention than the original one, I think it's better as a separate thread.
BTW, I'll try to release v15 for you guys today.

Is this kernel includes CWM recovery? I have managed to flash this kernel. But it seems there is no CWM in it. Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

If you read op carefully you will know you have to flash NUT's dualrecovery.
Always the same, people don't want to read a op and ask questions they are already answered in op. Don't find words....

Try first to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405925 this kernel. If sd card won't work, the problem is on sd card side. Format it in exfat. And be sure you are using stock Rom and no other Rom.

I have compiled a list of kernels that work on CM7 base. I used to have these in my signature but looks like this might be worthy of a thread considering the questions people keep asking on what kernels are compatible with the latest cm7 nightly etc etc and I don't see a similar thread.
NOTE: These kernels only work on roms that base on CM7 Nightly 123 and later ( CM7 nightly 123 and higher, Insanity 40 and higher, MIUI 1.9.30 and higher). Make sure you are on these before you try these kernels. I will keep this thread updated but if you see a newer version of any of these kernels posted in IRC, kernel thread or wherever, post it here and i will update this original post.
Glitch:
[2.6.35 base]
GlitchV12B3
Main Thread Here. Read all you want to learn about features but get the latest from the above link.
Neo Platypus:
[2.6.37 base] (NOTE: needs a full wipe due to a different linux base)
NeoXXBeta7
and
[2.6.35 base]
Neo17r18
Main Thread Here. Links above tell you the features included.
FuguMod:
[2.6.39 base] (NOTE: needs a full wipe due to a different linux base)
LatestVersion
Main Thread Here. Read about features, links to sources etc there.
After flashing this, if you are looking for stock CM7 kernel, try the attached Cm7_stock_kernel.zip. I pulled this from nightly 143. Worked fine for me. I flashed neo first, then flashed this and got stock kernel back.
If you screwed up something and lost recovery, try the attached KernelCMW2.tar file. Flash it using odin/heimdall, pull battery and put back, enter cwm and flash a CM7 based rom.
If any of the kernel developers have an issue with this thread contact me by PM.
Thanks to the following kernel developers/maintainers
TKGlitch/Sixstringsg ( current maintainer of glitch)
Zacharias Maladroit ( Neo Platypus)
Nikademus ( FuguMod)
CM7 team/pawitp ( current maintainer for stock CM7)
This pleases me ^^
would be great if you could provide some basic info about those kernels (features included) and/or link to their source. appreciated.

Hey folks,
I've been looking to overclock my Xperia Arc (runnin ICS 4.0.4, build: 4.1.B.0.587) and I'm quite the noob at this so I'm looking for answers and advice. From what I gather, I need to install a kernel and I hear there are many options. One of the most popular one seem to be DooMKernel. I'm thinking about using that and I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520654
Now, my question is, is that the most updated thread? Is there a newer updated DooMKernel lying around (that is newer than v5)? It's fairly difficult to navigate the forums and so I have a hard time finding all the right posts.
My next question is, if I were to install CyanogenMod, does it install a new kernel that allows me to overclock or is OS separate from the kernel?
And also, feel free to recommend me any other kernels. Are they all pretty much the same or do some of them have particular enhancements?
Thanks in advance!

1. The Doomkernel you linked have problem with some battery drainage, thanks to not using newest kernel sources (if I remember correctly?) and also that Doomlord haven't updated it at a long time so. Look for some other kernels before that one becomes stable enough!
2. The Cyanogenmod ROM requires it own specially developed kernel which can be found in the zip package of each initial release (CM7 - CM9 - CM10) and it have to be flashed through Fastboot before you are flashing the ROM in recovery. Follow instructions on Cyanogenmod homepage for each installation on your prefered device for more info!
3. If you're on Gingerbread, use Doomlord v22, for some amazing performance / battery and a lot of functions (underclocking, undervolting and some other stuff).
If you're on ICS, use latest Lupus kernel (version 8) - that kernel is a beast in every way and you'll definitely like it, it's stable enough to satisfy even you!
It's some difference between the kernels in speed, stability and performance / smoothness / battery life / functions, yes. You have to check them out yourself to find your own favourite.
Hope my answers helped you!

Yup, CM kernels was created with overclocking and extended performance in mind, hence why Cyanogenmod ROMs are known with expanding the possibilities to some crazy ass performance and level boost (I have only tried CM7 and using it was like driving an Ferrari at 220 km/hour, later versions should be equal in their own specific ways).
Hope you got some useful answer on your question, dude!

I can recommend Sega Rush v3 kernel to use with your currrent or any .587 based custom rom, it can if you so wished be used up to 2ghz,( as could Doomlords V5 ), but be warned and advised to tread carefull with overclocking as you can cause permanent heat damage to, and even kill your phone if you overcook it.
I think the links to Doomlords v5 are down at the moment he is not active with it, so you may struggle to find doomkernel v5 to download, however if you look to the credits in the latest release of Sega v3, you will see him mentioned, take that as a good omen.
PS there are plenty of kernels to choose from, but I would say try to use one that is currently under active development, so that any upgrades / improvements are kept constant.
I can't comment on Cyanogenmods never tried any, but they seem popular enough, and look pretty well supported. You really are spoilt for choice, have fun

Your answer to bootloader unlocking is not exactly correct. Some phones locked to the mobile service provider cannot unlock bootloader by Sony's method. You need to use a third party service to remove the simlock then unlock the bootloader.
As for the answers to some of the questions:
- Supremacy script does improve phone performance although results will vary with different users.
- 3.x kernel does bring some improvement to phone performance. It does not lag like 2.6 kernel. But the kernel still needs a bit of work as not everyone is satisfied with its performance.
You don't have to ask for thanks, anyone would push the thanks button if they found it useful.

Others seem to be having no problems. Perhaps its something to do with gapps. I'm assuming you used full gapps. Try the mini or light version of gapps. So long as u done your full wipes I can't see any other reason. Maybe try flash ROM let it boot then go back to recovery and flash gapps.
Edit - OK so apparently light gapps just causes FC'ing I'll link to other gapps when I'm home.
i flashed this ROM with full Gapps in Xperia Arc S, and it's working really fine, until now had twice random reboots, but that's not really a problem to me.

My first attempt was Lupus/v21, now I'm on Fusion/v22. Both seem to be highly unstable. Just using apps is normally fine, but a few things seem to provoke lockups including unlocking the screen, listening to music and using the camera.
I did a full wipe before installing (system, cache, dalvik cache, data), I even tried the permissions fix.
Otherwise it seems a great rom, perfect feature set and very fast, but the unstability makes it unusable for me

Yes u can post here also. Comparing any 4.2 ROM to STOCK ICS, stock ICS would be the winner in terms of stability. 4.1 is the best if you want JB IMO. But 4.2 and especially PAC 4.2 has a lot more features, customization amongst other things. It doesn't matter on the kernel its going to be the same. This is why FXP stopped developing after CM10 for the XPERIA 2011 line-up. It will never be 100% stable as will any 4.2 ROM for Xperia 2011.
I don't know what calls you stabillity, but 4.1 is very stable, almost as 4.0. 4.2 isn't stable specially with 3.x kernels, but 4.1 is perfect. And FXP stop the development for 2011 line becase they have to develop for a lot of devices, i think.

I said 4.1 is stable. And no they stopped because without a stable 3.x kernel it would be impossible for a stable 4.2 J. There was no 3.x kernel for 2011 device back then, but even still they knew if there was a 3.x kernel it would need a lot of work to get stable, if it even can.

But 3.4 kernel is pretty stable now na?
I think that crapy random reboot is the only problem now.

I know it is against the rule to ask for what THE BEST ROM is but it is urgent so i can't flash dozens of roms to find out which is buggy. My sister is going out of country this week and i need to install a custom stock android rom on her xperia ION, the ion that i'm flashing is currently running on official rom with locked bootloader. So can you guys suggest a rom with minimum bugs and doesn't need any mantainance like wiping dalvik if its stuck on bootloop or whatever.
Thnx in advance

PureION v2
eXistenZ Ultra 1.4.0
These are for locked boot loaders, these are best among others.
PS: I dont mean any disrespect to any Developers, i used both of these ROMS and both served me very well than others which i tried..

Thnx for the rply, will try existenZ
I´ll also suggest PureIon, didnt test existenZ. I had to change back from cm11 to a stock based rom because of studying, and i dont regret it.
Hi @optimumpro,
I was following your post, and I just want to know the best ROM for the Xperia ION Locked bootloader, also I prefer it having CM.
Actually I'm using the CM 10 for Locked B from @MrGezz.
Thanks,
Jorge

My personal preference is Slimbean for LB. It is based on CM10 and fastest and lightest of all. In addition, it offers most options onboard.
