thats what i thought so i tried a different sim card from a different carrier and same issue. i am wondering if it could be a sim card reader issue?

Probably, since you've tried every possible solution through software. So yeah, might be a hardware issue.

I've tried JB 4.1 and 4.1.1 and both versions give me the same strange phenomenon . Once in a while the pin code screens pops up and disappears immediately.
Sometimes the pin code screens stays up for a while, entering my pin code gives an invalid pin code message.
Inserting my wife's sim card does not solve this problem.
I do not have this problem running ICS.
Here's a video showing the bug (bit shaky):

Anyone knows about this problem?
radio version?
Did you flash the new radio? I'm also on 4.1.1 and am not seeing this issue, but I didn't update the radio firmware...

I did not flash my radio.
I get the exact same issue. How every its only when I'm using my 0044 global sim. My UK orange sim is fine. Also only happens when I try to make a call.
Currently running JB 4.1.0 port.

I have it when i'm working with the phone. I don't know if it could be the sim card since i don't have this issue with 4.04.
flash the radio
I'd suggest trying to flash the radio firmware & see what happens... New radio is supposed to work with both ICS & JB.

Well that is the latest radio available I'm afraid. If it doesn't work for you, you could always try to downgrade to a previous version and see if that helps in your case...
It's early but so far it did not happen. This might just be the solution.

It seems that flashing the radio did the trick. Thanks for the help.

I'm witnessing the same probleme, i still can't find a solution, phone is unlocked, sim card was working for me until i rooted and upgraded to 4.1.2
Any Idea would be apreciated
So my Samsung Galaxy s2 dropped in the toilet, I brought it to the store then they fixed it, they put android version 2.3.5 then I went home and installed ICS (it was originally ICS when I bought it) it worked but the thing is... the phone does not detect the sim card! I use Simple Mobile.
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: Unknown
Kernel version: 3.0.8-perf-T989UVLE1-CL508451

Build number: IML74K.UVLE1
I used odin to install ics. I think is not working because of the water damage at the insert sim area or it might be the baseband
The phone says "searching" still when I insert the sim.
Just call your service provider and register the sim card with them.

Yes. I brought it to the simple Mobile store, then they fixed it, they told me that the phone doesn't detect the sim.
Please refer to the mini bath thread
"I didn't slap you, I high fived your face."
it says
"Baseband version: Unknown"
you installed ics, but not a radio. go install a radio.
Can you give me a link to the radio download? Thank you.
Dang, I was beaten to the minibath line!

That's normal mine says unknown half the time as well. As long as you got a signal it's working.
Lol okayy.
Hi guys, I am helping to fix my lil bro's r800i.
His phone keeps restarting whenever I turn the wifi on and there is no phone signal. I mean visually the signal bar is there but no calling or checking credit balance could be done.
This happened since he did software update from sony's end to R800i_4.0.2.A.0.42.
Upon lurking xda, I found out these problems may be caused by the baseband.
Therefore I used flashtool to flash:
> R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World
>R800i_4_0_2_A_0_69_WORLD_1_8_1247_6176
>R800_4.0.2.A.0.79
>X10_V1_BLRelock
>and one other custom rom called GB something
I also tried to flash new kernel:
>LuPuS_zeus_Stock-gB+iCsv7-full
>PLAY-GSM-Advanced-Stock-vt
>ExtremeKernel_r3-480p
note: I wanted to try doomkernel but I couldnt find working download link
Other than that, I tried to flash only the baseband:
>Baseband -36
However, I couldn't solve the problems with the previous steps. I need advice from experienced users, thank you guys..
Try phone without sim or with different sim card
Do you know what firmware version was before you update it to .42?
You did right thing with flashing different basebands, but maybe it's hardware fault...
Maybe to try with lowest firmware version you can find?

The sim card is working well in other mobile phone.
So the wifi and signal uses the same hardware?
I will try your suggestion on the lowest firmware flashing and update later on. Thank you Bakisha.

As i know, wifi and network hardware is not related in hardware terms (but i'm not sure)
Also, try wifi in airplane mode (to see is it single or two separate problems)

I have two sim cards inserted. when my phone was in stock rom everything works pretty fine. but on a custom rom something went wrong. everytime i switched cellular data to card two, witch is China Unicom by the way, the other card cannot receive signal. and if i disable one of the two slots, the other one cannot receive signal, either.
anyway to fix this problem? like flashing a baseband patch or someting else?
