[Q] Effects on pushing phone to its limits. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Will pushing my phone to its limits via playing 3D intensive cause the phone to slow down. I notice it gets rather hot and it leaves me to wonder if its causing wear and tear faster than just normal usage. I intend to keep this phone for another year and ahalf and would like it to maintain its snappiness. I understand theres no moving parts but that heat cant be beneficial to the hardware.

While prolonged overheating can be bad for things in there, if it happens in short terms, I wouldn't worry TOO much. Perhaos find an app that will let you know internal temperatures, and if you think it's getting too hot, shut it down for a while. In other threads I've read, clearing the dalvik-cache seems to temporarily help as well, if you're rooted.
My phone generally heats up while on a long cjarge with its case on (I remove the case to let it breathe now), during long periods of playing graphic-intensive games or running programs that use a lot of my processor (I underclock things at times now, helps a bit), and in the car when using GPS (I'm in Texas, though...gonna happen.)
None of these things have gotten the phone as hot as I had to when I replaced the glass lens. Lacking a heat gun, I used my hair dryer on full blast to melt the adhesive. By the way...leave it to professionals. It worked out, but shattered glass stabbed me a few times. But during the process, I had to get it so hot it hurt a little to touch. Of course, the focal point if the heat was the glass, but I digress. I'm running the Jedi Master ROM, and the only tines the phone lags is when I start typing to fast for it to keep up. System, ui, all that still works pretty well. Well, except when I break it.
As long as it's not TOO hot, heat is going to happen. This is a fairly power-heavy device, so when it gets going, heat is a by-product. Just keeo a weather eye out and judge it by your situations. Youbshould be alrigyt.

[Q] Evo in the freezer!

Ok so half or over half of most my days are spent in a subzero freezer unloading freight ect.. My question is this, am I doing any harm to my EVO by keeping it in my pocket while im in the freezer the phone does get rather cold while im in there im just wondering how much if any damage im inflicting on my EVO and should i try to find another place to keep it while im working?
no i believe you do not your body heat should provide some heat to protect it ..just remember if it gets under 32f your phone might get permanent freeze damage thats if you leave it in there. lol just keep it in your pocket
I would only worry about moisture intrusion. It may not affect the phone but it may cause your water damage tape to react thus voiding your warranty for water damage.
i wouldn't bring it in the freezer with you. keep it locked up somewhere.
As long as your phone is kept in your undermost layer of clothes. I can't see any reason why it would be damaged by the cold. I would imagine your body heat would keep it around forty or fifty degrees, which is perfectly safe.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I don't think the cold itself will hurt it, I would just be carefull of condensation that could form when it warms up.
Like was said earlier, it will probably be ok if you keep it in your pocket.
Most electronics dont mind the cold (those that use some kind of bulb are the eception normally). As others have said the problem is more likely the condensation or moisture that could occur from the rapid cooling or heating.
if it is under layers of clothing it should be fine but it is probably best not to take it in the freezer.

You should be just fine while in the cold. Lower temperatures, even freezing temperatures, will not impede the Evo operation; they may in fact prolong the battery life.
The problem is going to be taking a cold Evo outside, and having moisture condense on the phone. I would get a plastic bag, and put the evo inside just before walking out of the freezer.
I know the Evo is one cool phone but no reason to freeze it. Do you use it while in the freezer? What are you doing in the freezer?
I would recommend keeping it somewhere else if at all possible.
left mine on a box while lumping a reefer, -15°f for an hour, no ill effects, but if you do something like that make sure you warm it back up slowly and don't breathe near it, condensation will make you cry

Getting hot

Anyone else's getting very hot. I already returned two rezounds for getting up to 150now my nex is up to 111 right now and all I was doing was playing around on Facebook. Most of the heat feels like it is on the top half of the phone and the screen gets extremely hot

Is your brightness up high? And also are you charging it while playing on it
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Charging now wasn't then and yeah I keep brightness up otherwise the screen is way too grainy. You should be able to use your screens top levels without scolding your fingers lol just curious if this is a common thing or If I have to yet again get another phone
Rolled out from my Gnex Prime
My phone heats up on the top part like yours but mainly when I use it while it charges or if I keep the screen awake for about 20-30+ min straight.
Edit: just like your laptop or TV or psp or any other electronic device lol

Not seen any issues on mine so far and it doesn't get as hot as my iPhone 4S when that is charging and/or using bluetooth for making calls.
yeh my phone gets quite warm also , crazy thing is when it gets warm im sure it affects the colour temp of the screen.
Mine gets hots quickly when I play Riptide a lot.
I noticed this too, but. I don't feel it since its just the top half and my hands are gripping the bottom half. I do feel it when I stick it in my pocket and my thigh gets really warm.

Mine heats up at the top back only when I'm using mobile data to do stuff. But I can use wifi all day with top brightness with no overheat. Stupid.

Sounds like she's gettin hot for most people in the same spot. This over heating phone **** is pissing me off

like right now. I literally just turned my phone on 5 minutes ago and am on wifi and I can feel the top getting hot

when I got my phone a few weeks ago (GSM 4.0.1) my phone easily warms up especially at the back near the camera area. After manually updating to 4.0.2, I really noticed it was gone. Now even I am watching youtube videos for more than 20-30mins my phone doesn't warm up even a bit unlike before i got it on stock 4.0.1 in which just turning on a wifi connection and gps warms the back of my nexus without running an app.

Define overheating. Because i think the phone does quite well for how much horsepower is under the hood. Mine gets warm doing this, that and the other. The only time i was seriously concerned was watching a netflix movie over mhl and really i was really only concerned about the battery temp than the phone. The phone and its components are a big step up from phones 3 years ago. People used to whine about phones getting warm when 3g heated them up and 3g was becoming the norm. Fast forward to today and there are more powerful components packed into less space, and less ventilated at that. If you dont like your phone warming up get a dumbphone and be done with it. I think the nexus and most other smartphones do quite well. And this was before i undervolted it. I can only imagine how many useless threads will pop up about heat when quad cores come out. Personally when i upgrade next, hopefully two years from now and not the annual phone i am accustomed to, i hope a dual core cpu and gpu at 28nm or less will be sufficient and be well within the thermal windows and limits for how powerful these pocket size devices have become and dramatically changed our social lives.
Crazy world, ay?
mine gets hot up top on my ear when I'm on a call. I found at least by switching to the new 4.0.3 radio and doing a combination of over clocking + under volting it doesn't get nearly as hot anymore.
I'm talking when my battery temp is 111° and the top of it feels much much hotter than that. I'm on 4.0.2 I understand the phones will get warm but they shouldn't from ten minutes of Facebook. If I was watching Netflix using my GPS and doing so over 4G then yeah scold my hand I get that but not frickin Facebook or internet browsing or anything like that. I really like the phone and ill be keeping it but apparently won't be playing many games lol
Rolled out from my Gnex Prime
I use a SetCPU profile to peg back the processor to ~700mhz when the temp gets over 40c

Whoa, it's overheating? You might have a defective phone. Mine gets pretty hot but the heat hasn't led to any stability issues or damage like yours. (Note: It's not overheating if there's no damage, so I'm assuming by your text that your phone got damaged)

I don't think his phone got damaged, I think it's just hot.
Mine gets pretty hot but the operation of the phone has been fine. It sounds like all of the phones operate basically identical to this.
No not damaged. I leave it alone once it gets real hot. I've turn down my brightness to help prevent it a little. Def doesn't look as good lol

Galaxy Nexus Overheating

So I just got the Galaxy Nexus (upgraded from the Nexus S) and just after the first day of use (no heavy workload, wifi or GPS) this thing became painfully hot. We're talking touch it to your skin and *ouch* hot. Strangely the massive heat output seems to be limited to just the top quarter of the device. Also note that it takes only about 10min until it reaches 'unusable' status.
Does anyone else have experience with this problem? Admittedly I was warned by the provider I got it from that they had had feedback from customers about it's excessive heat output and other people I know have also commented to the same affect. But I never thought it would be quite this bad. I could fry an egg on this thing. Considering my Nexus S never had this issue - this is disappointing. Are we talking hardware design fail? Or perhaps a bad batch in my country?
If this was an iPhone they'd be headlines going on about 'heat-gate' and Larry Page coming out saying that we're 'cooling it wrong' lol
the nexus does get abit hot around the camera area, but it shouldnt be THAT hot lol.. what are the ambient tempreatures around where you're using the phone?

Not that hot - maybe 20-25c
Perhaps monitor battery temp with an app, it won't give you a precise indication of your processor temp, but there should be a correlation. The phone does get warm around the camera area, but never painfully so (for me). Was your AOS usage abnormally high?
I think the OP is overreacting just a little, if it burned you then the phone would have melted
Anyways, its perfectly normal. the OMAP4 chipset runs really hot, I read somewhere that it operates normally between 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here it says that the OMAP4 platform has a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. I think thats overstating it, but its all there

Well let me put it this way. It's hot enough for me to consider claiming on warranty. No phone should generate that much heat right next to your head/ear. That's unusable in real terms (at least with this particular one). And i've had my fair share of android phones in the past to compare...

The Tegra2 chipset runs VERY hot when overclocked as well, I've had hot experiences on both my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my G2x, and I can also say that the OMAP4 runs hotter than that! Just offering opinion is all, it's perfectly normal for it to be running extra hot, and it happens fairly quickly.
I completely agree with you that the phone does get abnormally hot, but then again, from my experience, so does the RAZR with a sister chip in it.

Android 4.0.1, stock Nexus Galaxy, going on 2 weeks. It's in an otterbox defender case, after 1.5 hours of running video it's warm in my hands, but that's under constant workload that nearly drained the whole battery. In other words during normal operation I am not finding the serious problem you are describing. Empathy out to you.
What temps we're talking about? Mine stays at +36C +38C while browsing web/watching youtube and gets a bit (around +41C) hotter when playing games. And these temps are far from hot-to-touch.

Sometimes my GN becomes really hot too. It also happens when i'm watching hd video for a half an hour or more. Then it turns terribly hot.
mine goes to 48C and then it starts lagging like hell
Mine gets warm around the camera and earpiece. It's pretty normal, I'd say.

There are multiple threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before: it's a dual core device, it runs hot, it's not "overheating" unless your phone is crashing, shutting down, or otherwise obviously malfunctioning in some way other than getting hot.
What do you mean by "it reaches 'unusable' status" though? Are you just afraid of using it because it seems hot? Mine gets quite hot when I use it heavily...have kept it going for several hours in this state (while plugged in) with no other issues.
Mine gets hot in the same area, but it has never been that hot, just warm. My OG Droid was OCd to 1.3ghz and that literally reached 150+ degrees F quite a few times and is still fine to this day. The OMAP SoCs seem to run a bit hotter than others, but they can definitely handle the heat.

Basically out of the many smart phones i've had in the past. This is the first that I would say I would refuse to hold it up next to my ear due to the excessive heat. It's bad enough just holding it landscape to type on let alone sticking next to my head. It's really annoying considering how otherwise the interface and physical design of the device is better then anything else i've seen on the market.
I think i'm going to get one of those laser thermometers to find just what the temp on the surface of this thing actually is.

It's hot on the back of the phone like other uses have said, not the front where your ear would be (unless it is which is an entirely different problem). Plus, when your phone reaches those temps through extraneous use (videos, games), you normally wouldn't be putting it near your ear anyways. I don't see this as a huge issue. If you do something taxing, much like a computer, expect the phone to work a little bit harder and hotter.
Oh and I doubt it's hot enough to fry an egg. You would smell the plastic melt first.
I've had once when my GNex was really hot. It was when I try factory reset many times since there was a bug that factory reset does nothing in a custom rom. But I didn't know at that time. I tried reset, flash rom, reset, etc. My GNes ended up really hot.
The only time my galaxy nexus got really hot was when I was switching kernels every 2-3 days, and one kernel (I think it was one of Franco's earlier builds) made it run hot even when I wasn't using the phone that intensely. Changed the kernel, and it's never been hot since (I play games, listen to music, browse web, push notifications, etc.) I don't do much video/HD streaming though...
I have been getting that too. Around the earpiece gets warm when only slightly used. Also, I can hear a faint buzzing humming sound from there. Open the back cover..can hear it from the camera too. Is something wrong with my phone

Extremely high phone temp!

Does anyone have issues with your SGSII T989 phones having extremely high temps?
I get it when using the GPS, charging the phone while i'm talking on the phone, and doing a few other activities. It did not do this on my first purchase of the phone and i'm a bit weary of the temps as sometiems it gets quite warm!
Currently I'm on O.E. SGS II Rom w/ root, that's about it! No OC no mods or anything of that sort. (Just CWM and Root).
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as this heat as caused me from using my phone each day more and more.
P.S. I WAS on Juggernaut Rom and then flashed back to Stock, and it was having this heating issue then, should i try to do a complete 100% wipe like on one of the development threads and start from scratch like I just got the phone from the factory again? I wiped my system using Odin and it seems to of kept my old programs, no information like games and etc. was kept however, does anyone think that might be the problem? Once again thanks!

If you are rooted you might want to try a different kernel and maybe SetCPU. I had some overheating/temp issues a while back and after I lowered my CPU a bit and set it to an Ondemand state with a profile for screen off running CPU very low when not actively in use it seemed to fix the problem.. Btw SetCPU is free for XDA users, there is a thread somewhere in the Android Hacking Apps forum..
GL
Edit: I thought it was free to xda users, I checked and cant find the thread, maybe I was wrong or they changed it..

I'm on the stock kernal, I was on the modified 1.7ghz kernal before i believe, as I could overclock over that, but i just recently stopped that and went back to stock. I was and still am expecting the phone to malfunction on me sometime soon lol. It's been a really reliable phone so far! My G1 and Mytouch 3G slide (gf's phone) took soo many dumps on me while I used it. Each of those phones were probably sent back 5-8 times and they were kept completely stock for a while!
Back on subject though. Any kernals that go well with the factory rom? I don't favor any aftermarket roms right now as they're not stable enough for my usage IMO.
I have heat problems but I've always had the stock kernel...

Undervolt at the stock clock if you want to lower temps. However, charging will always increase heat especially if you are using the phone at the same time, and depending on ambient temps.
Dude my moms sgsII literally got fried because it heated up once. She was using her phone normally and all of a sudden it started heating up. She kept using it and the next day the phone won't turn on, charge or get into download mode. It looked like what a hard brick would look like. So I just returned it for a HTC one S.
Btw she was on full stock.
My phone heats up a lot because I'm down south with 90-95 degree temps and I keep phone in the car dock by the windshield but it never failed on me.

I thought it was a well fixable issue. Guess not? lol... Either way, everytime my batt temps rise, i notice i get 40-45C and i start to get worried. So if i'm in a car, i'd just put it next to the AC vent while the car's running and temps get down to about 25C and i'm good again. I just don't feel comfortable with the phone anymore like I use to. It never did this before, why now??
I have an app that warns when it goes over 40 and it happens daily. I was downloading torrents one time and it keeps the screen active while downloading and the thing got like 62 celsius before I realized what happened. It almost burnt my hand lol. if your ever in sunlight or palming the phone while using gps on 4g.
overheating is very common with this phone I wouldn't worrie about it to much it is uncomfortable though if in your pocket

Also remember, any app that uses hardware acceleration for graphics or video (games, browser, etc.) or gps will cause the phone to heat up if used for a prolonged period of time.
Playing Osmos was like setting my phone on fire.

Are you sure I shouldn't worry? I mean, I don't want solder points falling off due to too high of a temp. Then again these temps don't even reach 100C yet. I've got the same app too probably, it's a battery monitor that tells u when the phone gets too hot. mine's goes off everytime i'm around 40+

Yep, I use GPS and often. It's just so much easier than guessing your way off a piece of paper. But yeah, like you the phone gets soo hottttttt. I have to always put the phone to my AC vent.
It's normal to a point.
These are serious computers we have.
Think of the old P486's back in the day, those things needed huge heat sinks and some even had fans
our phones which is what, 4x the cpu power and not only no heat sink but everything is squished together inbetween a hot screen and a hot battery
That being said, I use a program called A-see, which is to watch my security cameras while out.
And if I forget to close it out (Actually exit the program) It will keep running and running and eventually probably fry my phone
lets put it this way, I will actually start to feel it in my jeans pocket, it gets that hot.
Also I have a program which will alert me if my phone gets to 130 degrees F
And will automatically shut the phone down if it gets to 140
overheat protection or something
I had this issue where whenever I try to charge my phone it would overheat to the point unbearable to touch I went back to stock flash different roms in the end i exchanged it it was still under warranty

Phone crashing and audio skipping

Hi everyone,
So a couple of weeks ago I decided to jump into the pool with my S6 in my trunks pocket. It was submerged for over 5min. Of course I thought it was curtains for my device, but I figured there was no harm in spending a few days trying to revive it before officially writing it off. After two days in rice, and two more days of sitting out in the sun with a fan blowing directly on it - IT...IS.....ALIIIIVE.
The phone has been in operation, and functional, for about a week now. However the first issue I noticed was that my audio now skips when the screen is off. It doesn't matter which app I'm using, or if I'm streaming or playing locally - when the screen is off, all audio skips to the point where it is unlistenable. So I Googled this issue and found a few people saying that switching to the ONDEMAND cpu governor will fix this. I tried this, and sure enough, the skipping audio is immediately gone...however my phone crashes/restarts like crazy on the ONDEMAND governor (the only governor it seems to agree with is INTERACTIVE). FYI - I'm running BigDaddy Nougat and SkyHigh Kernel 5.01. I tried reflashing Big Daddy to get rid of SkyHigh, but the skipping audio persisted.
So I have a double-edged sword on my hands - I either have to live with crashing, or skipping audio. I don't want either. I do believe there are plenty of things i have not tried, given the kernel customization options available to me through Synapse - however it's been a very long time since Android was a hobby of mine, and I just have not kept up with all of the technology - the Synapse app is pretty intimidating to me, I don't want to just start messing with sliders.
Any suggestions? TIA
BTW I should probably add that the crashing restarting only happens when the device is idle, or when I go to wake it up.
Please. Please. Please.. DO NOT USE RICE -.-
I do not understand how this has spread so badly. If rice randomly absorbed moisture from the air, then theoretically, based off that fact, I could place rice in a dish on my counter in humid weather and the rice would get soft. But that doesn't happen. In addition, placing rice in salt shakers only dries out the rice, because the salt has a higher affinity to the water than rice! Rice will not absorb moisture without heat!!
The trick to recovering a water logged phone is ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL of 90% or greater that is..
My personal method for any electronic device I accidentally submerge is this:
I have vacuum seal containers. I place phone into container and fill to about half way with IPA. Then I use the suction pump to remove the air from the container, thus forcing the air out of the device and allowing IPA to enter.
Leave it like that for about 10 minutes while shaking.
IPA dissolves in water and thus greatly lowers its heat of vaporization (the temp at which water evaporates) and I also believe its not conductive, but the water (with stuff dissolved) is. That is why 90% or greater is required.
Doing my steps followed by a hair dryer to evaporate everything has saved my phone, my brother's phone, my GPS, and other electronics. Trust me on this, it works. It may even help get rid of your issue too, however it may be too late and corrosion already set in. Most times though, its what the water leaves behind that causes shorts/issues. But I'd still try it if I were in your situation.
